Michael Jackson is back, not from the grave, but as the top-earning dead celebrity!
The King of Pop, who died in 2009, regained his crown on the Forbes’ list of highest-earning dead celebrities.
With estimated earnings of $160 million, he surpassed the King of Rock n’ Roll Elvis Presley with $55 million and cartoonist Charles Schulz with $37 million, who came in second and third spot, respectively.
"He earned the bulk of his bucks from two Cirque du Soleil shows, his Mijac Music catalog, recorded music sales and his half of the Sony/ATV publishing empire - which includes the copyright to hits by the Beatles, Lady Gaga, Eminem and Taylor Swift, among others," according to Forbes. Immortal, a touring show, has grossed over $300 million since opening last year.
Forbes has announced Madonna as the highest-paid celebrity with $125 million. However, the Queen of Pop fell short to Michael’s $160 million, literally making him the highest-paid star of the year.
“It’s the third time in the past five years that the top-earning celebrity in the world has come from the graveyard,” Forbes said. Just in time for Halloween, isn't it?
Forbes has estimated the celebrities’ earnings from October 2012 to 2013 by consulting to estate managers, lawyers and including their posthumous earnings.
