Getting married to the love of your life is one of the most special times of a couple’s relationship, which is why they choose to celebrate their love with a wedding ceremony. Some people prefer to keep things small and intimate, while others opt for a big bash surrounded by hundreds of family and friends. And then there are the celebrity weddings that are so lavish that my wallet starts to cry just thinking about them.
Don’t think it’s possible to fork out millions on a wedding? Well, these 17 celebs are proving that when it comes to love, you can really put a price on it, and that price is upwards of a $1 million. From British royalty like Prince William and Kate Middleton who had to pay out a truly ridiculous sum to ensure they were protected from threats, to reality TV’s princess Kim Kardashian who has had not one, but two insanely expensive weddings, below are some of the celebs who have really splashed out for their wedding day.
Some are still together, and some have already called it quits (imagine wasting all that money when it’s only going to end in divorce?), but the one thing they all have in common is how overboard they went!
17 Justin Timberlake And Jessica Biel Had A Destination Wedding
There were a few female celebs I thought Justin Timberlake would end up with before he met the love of his life Jessica Biel, and when these two decided to take their relationship to the next level and get married, they didn’t hold back. The couple is rumored to have spent $6.5 million on their 2012 wedding which was held in a luxury villa in Puglia, Italy, for themselves and their 100 guests.
It was also a week-long party, and according to MTV News, this included fireworks, folk dancing, and a pre-beach party, so you can imagine that that racked up the cash, but then there were also the designer outfits which cost a pretty penny. According to The Insider, Timberlake wore a Tom Ford tuxedo and Biel wowed in a Giambattista Valli Haute Couture gown.
16 Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Had A $12 Million Wedding To Remember
When Kim Kardashian and Kanye West first got engaged there was some speculation about whether or not the couple was actually going to get married, and if they did, would it last more than a few months -- we all remember how successful her second marriage to Kris Humphries was.
However, Kardashian and West have proved everyone wrong, because several years on and three babies later, and they are still together. But this list isn’t about their marriage, but rather their 2014 wedding, which was a week-long celebration between Paris, France, and Florence, Italy (because obviously, one destination wasn’t enough). Although there are some reports that claim the couple spent $2.8 million on their wedding, there are other reports suggesting that the couple forked out as much as $12 million. According to InStyle, some of the costs include the venue, which was $400,000, and Kardashian’s dress was $500,000.
15 Amal Alamuddin and George Clooney Wedding Cost $4.6 million
For a long time most fans suspected that George Clooney would continue to hold the title of the world’s most eligible bachelor forever, but then he met Amal Alamuddin and his life was changed forever.
The couple decided to get hitched in Venice, Italy, in 2014, and if the photos proved anything then it looked to be one of the most sophisticated and glamorous affairs. However, it was also a very expensive one, because according to E! News, the couple spent $4.6 million on their wedding, with costs including hotel suites for 95 people for three nights, totalling $3 million -- let’s be honest, you would want to get invited to this wedding -- and flowers and decor costing $250,000 and $300,000 respectively.
The good news is that this couple's marriage still appears to be going strong, so their wedding was not for nothing!
14 Kim Kardashian And Kris Humphries' Televised Wedding Cost $10 Million
If this list shows you anything, it’s that Kim Kardashian is a big spender, and although her marriage to Kris Humphries was one of the shortest in celebrity history (it only lasted 72 days), it was also one of the most expensive. According to Buzzfeed, the couple shelled out $10 million on their nuptials, with some of the biggest costs being on Kardashian’s diamond headdress, which is reported to have cost $2.5 million, and her lavish her Vera Wang dress.
They also had 500 guests in attendance and spent over a million on flowers.
The couple probably made most of this money back though, because their wedding was televised on Kardashian's reality TV show in a two-part special -- this is probably also one of the reasons that things never worked out.
13 Catherine Zeta-Jones And Michael Douglas Had A $1.5 million NYC Party
Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas are one couple whose marriage is still going strong, but then again, they started their nuptials off the right way (well, if the right way is to spend millions on a wedding).
In 2000, the couple got married in New York, and although this ceremony was not quite as exotic as some of the others on the list, it was no less lavish, because the star-studded ceremony was held at the Plaza Hotel for 350 guests, including Michael Caine, Meg Ryan, and Sean Connery. According to E! News, some of the $1.5 million they spent was on the hotel package which starts at $375 per person. Zeta-Jones Christian Lacroix gown had a price tag of $140,000, and she finished it off with a very costly $300,000 diamond tiara.
12 Katie Holmes And Tom Cruise’s $3.5 million Italian Wedding Got Everyone Talking
There was a time when Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise were Hollywood’s “IT” couple, and when they got married in 2006 everyone wanted to know all about it, in part because it included Scientology — a religion which Cruise is very passionate about, and his involvement in it is rumored to be what caused his divorce in 2012.
The pair chose a 15th-century Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy, as their wedding venue, and according to E! News they spent $2 million on their celebration, with expenses including $50,000 for Holmes’ Armani wedding dress, and $900,000 for their guest airfare.
Already this sum is insane, but there seems to be some discrepancy about just how much the couple actually spent because Refinery29 reports that they spent $3.5 million!
11 Eddie Murphy And Nicole Mitchell Did Something Beautiful With Their Wedding Flowers
Eddie Murphy thought he had found the love of his life in 1993 when he married Nicole Mitchell, but in the end, it was not to be because the couple divorced in 2006. Still, they didn’t know that their love would end in heartbreak, which is probably why they weren’t concerned about spending a rumored $1.5 million on their ceremony.
According to Livingly, the couple had their 500 guest wedding at the Plaza Hotel in New York City (which seems to be a popular choice among celebrities) and as we mentioned earlier, the starting price per person for a celebration held at this venue definitely does not come cheap. The good news is that this couple chose to do something beautiful after their ceremony was over because they are reported to have donated all the flowers to a local hospital. Awww.
10 Prince Charles And Princess Diana Had The Most Expensive Wedding Of All
Oh, so you thought the latest royal marriage between Prince William and Kate Middleton was expensive? Well, then you’d be surprised by just how much the prince’s parents Prince Charles and Princess Diana spent on their 1981 ceremony.
According to InStyle, the royal couple spent $110 million (a number which has been inflated) on their ceremony, but the only good thing about this sum is that these weddings typically tend to boost the British economy. E! News reported that Prince William and Kate Middleton’s celebrations brought in $690 million for the local economy, including tourism and merchandise.
Now, we will have to wait and see how much money Prince Harry and his fiancée Meghan Markle spend on their upcoming nuptials, but I think it’s a safe bet that it won’t be anywhere near that figure.
9 Wayne and Coleen Rooney’s Four Day Party Cost $7.7 million
Coleen Rooney (née McLoughlin) married football star Wayne Rooney in 2008, and the couple decided to make it a very special occasion by flying to Italy for four days of celebrations surrounded by their family and friends. And according to MTV News, this included drinking it up on a $120 million yacht -- because what’s a wedding without a yacht?
According to Buzzfeed, the couple spent a huge chunk of change to hire Westlife, Coleen's favorite band, to perform at their nuptials, which set them back $660,000, and then her outfit also pushed up the wedding budget. The publication notes that she bought her dress from New York and reportedly spent $140,000 on trips for fittings, and the dress itself reportedly cost $300,000. I have my own wedding coming up this year, and I’m not sure that even if I had that much cash I’d want to spend it on a dress I only plan on wearing once!
8 Liza Minnelli And David Gest Had A $4.2 Million Star-Studded Bash
In 2002, Liza Minnelli married David Gest, and while their marriage ended 16 months later, according to Insider, they are reported to have spent $4.2 million to make their wedding day really memorable -- because money does buy happiness, even if it’s only fleeting.
The reception was reportedly held at the Regent Hotel, where they cut a 12-tier cake costing $40,000. This is pretty extravagant, but then again they did have 850 guests at their bash, including some very special famous faces. Elizabeth Taylor is reported as being the maid of honor, and the prince of pop, Michael Jackson, was the best man.
In addition to a pricey celebration, Minnelli also wanted to ensure that she looked her best and wore an ivory Bob Mackie gown, as well as a long white mink coat.
7 Prince William And Kate Middleton Spent $34 Million On Their Big Day
The British royal family are loved by millions from across the globe, so it’s not surprising that there was a lot of attention surrounding the nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton. The 2011 wedding was televised so that fans from every stretch of the world were able to feel included, but opening up their wedding to the public came with a lot of security risks. Which is why, according to reports, $32 million was used for security alone.
So, what was responsible for the other $2 million expenses? According to E! News, this was spread out between the two receptions at Buckingham Palace which were reported to be around $600,000, plus another $800,000 on flowers (that’s a heck of a lot of flowers). And then there was, of course, Middleton’s amazing dress, which was designed by Sarah Burton, the creative director of Alexander McQueen. The dress is believed to have cost a whopping $434,000!
6 Christina Aguilera And Jordan Bratman’s $2 Million Winter Wonderland
Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman are reported to have spent $2 million on their lavish wedding ceremony in Napa Valley at the beautiful Staglin Family Vineyard. According to Livingly, the couple had a winter-themed reception, and this included a lot of crystals and white roses. InStyle also shared information about this theme, explaining that December is the singer’s favorite month and that she had asked her wedding planner Michael Gapinski to create a winter wonderland, which included birch trees and branches, as well as a lot of white flowers.
This may seem one of the most absurd weddings, and personally, I can’t stand themed celebrations, but hey, if it made Aguilera feel like a princess when she walked down the aisle in her Christian Lacroix gown, which reportedly cost whopping $80,000, then who am I to judge?!
Oh, and they broke up five years later.
5 Chelsea Clinton And Marc Mezvinsky Spent Half A Million On Flowers
When anyone in the public eye gets married, it’s important to get top notch security for the big day, and it should come as no surprise that Chelsea Clinton’s 2010 wedding to Marc Mezvinsky had to budget in $200,000 for security. According to InStyle, the ceremony cost $3 million, and apart from the security cost, other expenses went to flowers which cost half a million, and the rental of tents for $600,000.
Hillary and Bill Clinton’s daughter reportedly chose to not go too overboard with her dress though, because according to Livingly, she spent $25,000 on her gown -- which is a lot of money for most of us, but in comparison to the expense that was spent on the wedding itself, it was actually pretty budget-friendly.
4 Brad Pitt And Jennifer Aniston Had A Ridiculously Expensive Zen Garden
Brad Pitt was married to Jennifer Aniston, long before he met now ex-wife Angelina Jolie (who is rumored to be the reason his marriage to Aniston failed). The couple was married in 2000, and honestly, this was a pairing that everyone thought would be together forever because they looked so darn happy together, except they did end up divorcing just five years later.
They reportedly spent an estimated $1 million on the ceremony which was held at a multimillion-dollar Malibu estate, but since both of them were earning big dollars, this was basically pocket change for them. Some of the biggest costs, as reported by InStyle, was the fireworks, the gospel choir, and the fact that Pitt apparently wanted a zen garden, which needed 50,000 flowers to complete. Um, OK then!
That, and the fact that Aniston reportedly wore a stunning white satin and silk dress from Milan-based dress designer Lawrence Steele.
3 Madonna And Guy Ritchie Had A $1.5 million Scottish Affair
Madonna and Guy Ritchie are reported to have spent $1.5 million on their wedding in 2000, and in comparison to some of these other lavish nuptials this may seem pretty tame, still, they most certainly did not hold back.
According to Livingly, the duo got married in a Scottish castle, and the couple’s young son Rocco wore a kilt (adorable, I know). They were also surrounded by some very famous faces and had a big party to mark their celebration. As for where the money went? Well, apart from hiring out a castle and spending loads feeding and entertaining guests, Madonna also wore a diamond tiara which was reportedly once worn by Princess Grace of Monaco. And Buzzfeed reports that she wore an $80,000 Stella McCartney dress.
2 Salma Hayek And Francois-Henri Pinault Married In An Opera House
Salma Hayek married Francois-Henri Pinault in 2009, and there was never going to be an issue with budgeting because Hayek’s man is a billionaire. According to Refinery29, the couple celebrated their wedding day at La Fenice opera house in Venice, Italy, which sounds as though it must have been an unimaginably beautiful destination.
The celebrations did not take place over the course of a week, like some of the other celebs on this list, but then again they didn’t have too because one weekend was quite enough. The publication claims that their celebrations included a performance by U2 star Bono and that the couple also had a black and gold masked ball for the ceremony at the Punta Della Dogana.
So, how much did all this cost? According to CBS News, the final amount is estimated at being around $3.5 million.
1 Tiger Woods And Elin Nordegren Had A Top Secret $1.5 Million Ceremony
Last but not least is Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren who got married in 2004, and while their wedding is rumored to have cost $1.5 million, it was their divorce that was the really costly procedure, because Nordegren is reported to have received $750 million following Woods cheating scandal (he is rumored to have had a month long affair with Rachel Uchitel, including many other women). Nordegren decided to call time on their marriage and their divorce, which happened in 2010.
However, there was a time when this couple was the picture of wedded bliss, and they had one of the most beautiful and secret ceremonies on this list. According to Livingly, they escaped along with 120 people to the Sandy Lane Resort in Barbados and celebrated with performances from world-class musicians and a fantastic firework ceremony.
