The 90s were great for television and film. It's just too bad that some of the biggest stars ended up doing things that make it very easy to see why someone would label them as a jerk!
We do have to apologize for all the shows and movies we're about to ruin. Whether it was being absolutely brutal to deal with on set, such as Janet Hubert on Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Shannen Doherty on 90210, or despicable off of it like Steven Seagal and Charlie Rose.
But before you get too sad, we're also going to improve many of your favorite 90s movies and stars. They might seem magical on the screen, but they are even more inspirational when you learn about their contributions to the world.
Such as Oprah who's donated over $400 million, or Jennifer Aniston who stepped up in a major way to help with some of the recent disasters. We also include some personal stories, such as Mara Wilson who spoke out about the unforgettable impact that Danny DeVito had on her life.
Let's just hope your favorites fall on the positive side of this list as we look at 8 Stars From The 90s Who Are Jerks (And 7 Who Are Sweethearts).
15 Jerk - Mel Gibson
Mel Gibson is a tremendous action star, but he seems to be much better under pressure when the script is telling him how to act. Gibson's public image took a huge hit after a DUI in 2006 also involved him yelling at the officer saying, "F*cking Jews... the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world. Are you a Jew?"
Gibson also came under fire a few years later for his messy divorce with Oskana Grigorieva, including saying she would deserve to get sexually assaulted by a pack of n*ggers. Hardly something that a "sweetheart" would ever catch themselves saying!
14 Sweetheart - Danny DeVito
Danny DeVito may play a pretty big douche on It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, but in real life, DeVito has always seemed like a delightful person.
Someone who got to know DeVito on a personal level was then-child actress Mara Wilson who worked with DeVito on the film Matilda.
When talking about her experience, Wilson stated how "DeVito and Rhea Perlman let me stay with them when my mom was in the hospital for cancer surgeries."
As someone who lost my mother to cancer, words can't express how important DeVito and Perlman's relationship must have been for Wilson.
13 Jerk - Tom Cruise
There is nothing more important in this life than being a good father. Which means I really cannot ignore the numerous reports over the years of Tom Cruise's distant relationship with Suri, who is now 11.
This includes several sources reporting that it has been upwards of 5 years since he last saw her, something he also seems in no hurry to change. An article for In Touch Weekly saw a family friend of Katie Holmes' open up about the relationship,
"Katie has grown so tired, disappointed and frustrated with Tom's absence as a father. She has made peace with his lifestyle, work, and spiritual choices, and has decided to do her best to parent Suri on her own."
God help us if Tom Cruise ever decides to team up with Holmes' new alleged lover, Jamie Foxx, for a movie again. The two previously have worked together on Collateral.
12 Sweetheart - Tom Hanks
Tom Hanks is often considered to be one of, if not the nicest guys in Hollywood. A statement that Maura Tierney who worked with Hanks on the play Lucky Guy and along with re-affirming that he is that nice said, "Never late, always the first one there. He's an extremely hard worker and he just sets a tone in the room that's really great."
Hanks' accolades include one particular story in which he befriended a cab driver (whom Hanks nicknamed Mr. Ferrari due to his wardrobe) and offered him backstage tickets to his play, which the cab driver quickly accepted.
11 Jerk - Shannen Doherty
Shannen Doherty found success on both Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed in the 90s but for this entry, we'll focus on her behavior during the former. Especially because she was such a huge pain in the ass to work with, that she got herself fired.
Doherty was allegedly constantly late, difficult to work with and also got into a significant fight with fellow co-star Jennie Garth that was instrumental in her firing.
One of Doherty's other co-stars on the show, Tori Spelling opened up about the fight in an interview with ETOnline: "I remember I could hear the door fly open and everyone screaming and crying. That's when I was told the boys just had to break up Jennie and Shannen... it was like a fist fight."
Spelling later made the call to her father (who created the show), to suggest that the cast felt she needed to be fired.
10 Sweetheart - Robin Williams
There aren't many celebrities in the world for whom people took the impact of their death harder than Robin Williams. Despite Williams' struggling with Lewy body dementia, Williams was always known for his incredible passion. This extended not only to his talents on the screen but also in his interactions with fans.
It's with a heavy heart that we no longer get to watch Williams in action, but at least his classic movies – several of which from the 90s – haven't been tarnished. Though we are less optimistic that the upcoming Jumanji 2 won't hurt your childhood!
9 Jerk - Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow may be most recognized for her role as Pepper Potts, but her career had several highlights that took place in the 90s. This includes her Academy Award for Shakespeare In Love back in 1998, as well as appearing in other notable films such as Seven and The Talented Mr. Ripley.
But Paltrow has come under fire in the past for her alleged poor attitude, including being named the most hated celebrity by Star Magazine back in 2013.
Part of the distaste for Paltrow may also come from her lifestyle website Goop.com which in October of this year was named the site with the worst pseudoscience by The Skeptic magazine.
Among the products sold on her website are healing stickers and sex dust.
8 Sweetheart - Dwayne Johnson
If you told Dwayne Johnson in the 90s that he'd be arguably one of the world's biggest actors in 2017, he'd probably think you were crazy. It was then that he was making waves as the most exciting superstar in the WWF, but perhaps even then his charisma made it clear he was destined for big things.
Johnson's used his success to help make the world a better place, including founding the Dwayne Johnson Rock Foundation, whose mission statement is: "The Dwayne Johnson ROCK Foundation creates a platform of hope and possibility for children worldwide by providing programs designed to enrich and empower the lives and self-esteem of children who are hospitalized for medical disabilities, disorders, and illnesses as well as at-risk and under-served youth."
7 Jerk - Steven Seagal
Has Steven Seagal ever formally been charged with a sex crime? No. But the reports we are about to tell you about don't paint a good picture for Seagal who was one of the biggest action stars.
TV reporter Lisa Guerrero has recently come out saying that Seagal attempted to sexually proposition her in 1996 when she arrived at his house for an audition, during which he wore only a silk robe.
It is also reported that "Inside Edition" may be coming out with a story in the near future that includes future allegations, including Seagal attempting to have Jenny McCarthy strip for him.
Kayden Nguyen, a former assistant of Seagal, has also had issues with Seagal in the past including saying she was allegedly kept captive at a house for upwards of 5 days during which she was assaulted on three different occasions.
6 Sweetheart - Oprah
Oprah is arguably the most influential celebrity on our entire list. So it's a damn good thing that she's on here for a positive reason, eh? Born in poverty, Oprah worked hard to amass a fortune that ranked her one of the richest people in the entire world.
But she'd be even richer if she didn't give a large portion of her income away. This includes over $400 million towards educational causes around the world.
Oprah has also used her platform to raise awareness for several charities through her "Oprah's Angel Network" which ran from 1998 until her last show in 2010.
5 Jerk - Michael Richards
Michael Richards was one of the biggest faces on television in the 1990s for his portrayal of Cosmo Kramer on the series Seinfeld. And for all intents and purposes, Richards was a standup guy throughout his time on the series. But when Richards' time on the show ended and he was doing stand up, he definitely had actions that painted him in a poor light.
After an African-American started heckling Richards, Richards responded with an incredibly racist tirade that included multiple uses of the N-Word. While he later apologized for the incident, some cats you can't put back in the bag (so to speak) and his image was forever altered.
We're sure after this incident he had a lot more respect for Seinfeld's stand up career!
4 Sweetheart - George Clooney
George Clooney is one of the most outspoken celebrities about trying to make the world a better place. His most notable efforts coming in moments like his support of gay marriage in America, as well as helping fundraise for events like the Haiti earthquake.
Clooney was a supporter of Clinton, so we're not too sure if he's feeling too warm about the current state of the world. Clooney has also worked with several of the same actors over the years, as well as transitioning into a directing career which indicates at the very least that he's a professional enough guy to work with too.
3 Jerk - Janet Hubert
Now we suppose this one depends on who you side with. Janet Hubert had the role of Aunt Vivian on Fresh Prince of Bel-Air but she was later replaced following unexplained issues behind the set.
When talking about the show, Hubert said, "I will never do anything with an a**hole like Will Smith… He is still an egomaniac and has not grown up. This constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn’t know the word.”
Hubert also explained some of her frustration, saying, "I seem to remember at option time, coming to you and saying … 'With you, maybe we can get a little raise.' [We thought] your influence would help us greatly like they did on Friends."
2 Sweetheart - Jennifer Aniston
When it comes to iconic television shows of the 90s, there aren't many that were bigger than Friends. And one of the biggest reasons for the success was the performance by Jennifer Aniston. Who, to her credit, has also managed to have a pretty successful career up until this point (even with some dud films).
At the end of the day though, Aniston's heart is even bigger than her film career. It was announced in October that Aniston was donating $1 million towards hurricane relief efforts; with $500,000 going towards the Ricky Martin Foundation and another $500,000 going to the American Red Cross.
1 Jerk - Charlie Rose
Charlie Rose started his talk show Charlie Rose in 1991. The show ran on a relatively consistent basis all the way until the news broke on November 20th, 2017 that it would be canceled. Why? 17 women have come out and said Rose acted inappropriately towards them, including appearing nude in front of them without their consent and touching them inappropriately.
Gale King, who worked closely with Rose on the show CBS This Morning spoke out about the allegations saying, "To be honest with you, it still isn't easy. It's still very painful, it's still very hurtful."
