So celebs are normal flesh and blood people only and if nothing else, their weight gains and losses prove just that. The media will report on any and every little change in a celeb’s body. And let’s face it, we all can be a rather critical lot and love to comment and gossip about which celebs look so great with that weight loss, and which celebs are not looking so good that weight gain. We call them beached whales and elephants, yet we also dub them zombies and scary skinny if they lose too much weight. We fat shame them, thin-shame them, and body shame them to the point that many celebs literally end up sobbing into their couches in the dead of the night, with some mint chocolate chip ice cream for company. It may seem like they aren’t real people sometimes, because their lives are so different than ours, but they truly are just like us.
The showbiz is an intense, high-pressure world and every celeb needs to look their part to play their part. We all have our own body issues and fitness battles and somehow, we project our shortcomings and failings onto the celebs. And then there is a certain image consciousness associated with the whole glam world – but we like these celebs for losing weight to be healthier or gaining weight to be happier. Whether they have gained or lost this year, we hope that every celeb on this list is healthy. Here are 8 celebs who let themselves go a little this year, and 7 who worked on their fitness in 2017.
15. Jonah Hill Got In Shape
He went from a very flabby Jonah Hill in Superbad to a slighter thinner version later, to again a fuller-bodied one in War Dogs – well, Jonah Hill is back on the thinner and fitter bandwagon. When asked about his weight loss secrets, the man is honest and rather simple: “I found that Japanese food was very helpful to me as I could eat more but not get much bigger. Then I went to a nutritionist and I said, ‘I’ll lose weight, I’ll eat healthier and whatever, but figure out how I can drink beer.’ It’s so annoying because when I don’t drink beer, I get really thin, then when I drink beer, I get a little bigger.” So ultimately he had to cut down on beer – apparently, the nutritionist refused to work in beer on a weight loss diet. So Hill cut back on those six-packs and concentrated more on his six-packs, indeed – and while we haven’t seen him shirtless (and may not want to), he might just rock that look too.
14. Mariah Carey Let Herself Go
2017 saw Mariah Carey in a glittery bikini – and this picture is one we just cannot unsee, however much we wish too. She went from a starlet who used to be very hot to, well, looking like a cast member from Barney the Dinosaur – albeit, dressed in a diamond leotard. In 2017, however, Carey is pushing 50 years of age and she just doesn’t have the body she used to, a fact everybody seems to be aware of but her. This was the final performance of her Caesar’s Palace residency decked out in very revealing a glittering costume that basically left almost nothing to the imagination. If she had worn this two decades ago, she would have mesmerized the floor. Now she is just being trolled! Oh well, age catches up to the best of them.
13. Bryce Dallas Howard Got In Shape
Sometimes, to be considered a “serious actor” in Hollywood celebs have to transform their bodies. Christian Bale is a shining example of this, as is Charlize Theron and Anne Hathaway. Now it’s Bryce Dallas Howard. She gained over 35 pounds for her role in Black Mirror in which she plays a woman completely besotted with her social image. Howard also starred in Gold around that time, which stars a bloated Matthew McConaughey, who shaved his head and had a bad set of teeth. McConaughey was her inspiration so she decided to transform herself too by gaining as much weight as she could. She has slimmed down, though, but it’s a process. She said, “I’m still losing this weight,” now that she’s trying to “get more athletic” for Jurassic World 2: Fallen Kingdom where she will play the main protagonist.
12. Russell Crowe Let Himself Go
This is Maximus we are talking about here – the guy with the gleaming muscles and the rippling biceps. Sure, he was never Schwarzenegger or even Stallone, but he was the man plenty women dreamt of and lusted after. Now he’s 53 and the father of two grown sons. Crowe’s physique has taken a battering. He was a heavy smoker, and he quit for the sake of his kids but has been known to fall off the bandwagon every now and then. And despite those numerous nominations and wins, he has got a bad rap for his temper. One of his many infamous incidents also included throwing a telephone at the concierge in a hotel – after which he had to undergo a perp walk. About his weight gain, he very honestly says, “The point is that you do have to be prepared to accept that there are stages of life. So I can’t be the Gladiator forever.’
11. Lady Gaga Let Herself Go
Lady Gaga’s 2017 Super Bowl performance was a hit, pulling in the second-most viewers ever for a halftime performance. If you want to talk numbers, well, there were 117.5 million viewers to be exact. Wowza. Now, the thing with being on top is that there is always someone just waiting to pull you down. So some Internet trolls couldn’t resist making negative comments about her figure. GaGa had a perfect response. Her reply was simple, sweet and inspirational: “Go love yourself! I’m proud of my body and you should be proud of yours too. No matter who you are or what you do. I could give a million reasons why you don’t need to cater to anyone or anything to succeed. Be you, and be relentlessly you. That’s the stuff of champions.” Yep, we love Gaga for her straight talk and her zany outfits. Is she heavier? Maybe, but who cares?
10. Amanda Bynes Let Herself Go
Amanda Bynes has had a roller-coaster ride of a life over the past few years. And it all started when she announced her sudden retirement from the glitz and glam of Hollywood, despite being at the top of her game at the time. In 2012, she announced that she would be taking a hiatus from acting to pursue a fashion career. Then came plenty legal issues when she was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after side-swiping a police car in West Hollywood. After being involved with multiple hit-and-run charges later in the year, she was sentenced to three years’ probation. Her physical appearance changed for the worse and she had to undergo a psych evaluation too, considering she also tried to set a fire in some random person’s lawn. Now, she’s got it back together it seems but shows off a far fuller figure than before with a lot of weight gain. As long as she is healthy and sane, we think we can breathe a sigh of relief.
9. Jennifer Hudson Got In Shape
From a girl with a golden voice, 2017 has revealed Jennifer Hudson to be a girl with a golden body as well. While she has maintained her 80-pound weight loss in which she dropped from a size 16 to a size 6 for the last seven years, this year she looks even slimmer than before. Her secret? After giving birth to her son David, Hudson joined Weight Watchers to set a good example. Her weight had ballooned due to her unprecedented success as a singer combined with the personal family tragedy. So she had to learn weight loss and maintenance tools from the start but the process wasn’t easy. “I had to break my diet mentality. I used to deprive myself, thinking that was healthy. I didn’t eat pasta, fried food, red meat. I hadn’t had pizza in 10 years. Today, I know now that I can eat anything I want and still lose or maintain my weight. It’s about portions and balance.”
8. Rihanna Let Herself Go
While RiRi did have a thick summer in 2017, everybody was concerned about her weight gain except for her. And obviously, the Internet did what it did best: trolled her for looking heavier. But this Bajan Goddess had the last laugh for this is what she said about her weight: “Well, I actually have had the pleasure of a fluctuating body type, where one day I can literally fit into something that is bodycon, and then the next day — the next week — I need something oversized; I need a little crop here and a high-waist there to hide that part, you know? I really pay attention every day when I go into the closet about what’s working for my body that morning. I feel like that’s how everyone should go after fashion because it’s an individual thing. And then, if you take it further, it’s like, what week are you having? You having a skinny week? You having a fat week? Are we doing arms this week? We doing legs this week? We doing oversized?” This seems like a healthy attitude to have towards weight gain.
7. Jenna Jameson Let Herself Go
Jenna Jameson was lambasted last Christmas in 2016 for basically looking like a beached whale – all because she was pregnant. The Internet was rife with haters who couldn’t believe that their favorite adult star looked as big as any other pregnant woman. Jenna couldn’t care less. And after having her baby in 2017, she still hasn’t lost all that pregnancy weight. But this is what she had to say on Facebook: “Eight months post-party and I still haven’t gone under 150 lbs. It’s a new reality for me, not being waif thin, and it has taken some getting used to. I fight the feeling of wanting to crash diet like I used to and to be honest… Why should I diet? To be rail thin? To compete in the modelling world? Ummm, no. I’m a full-time mommy now and I’m embracing my round hips and not-so-flat tummy! I kinda like this new reality, especially because I look at a magical little being every day that made me this way!” We can’t fault this logic, and she seems to be embracing herself, which is always good.

When Selena Gomez debuted this year with a slightly curvier body, the Internet trolls were back at it. But basically ever since she graduated from her teens to her twenties, the trolls have been at it calling her fat and whale-like and everything in between: “I’ve been working in therapy. But I’d land at the airport, and people would yell out, ‘You’re fat!’ It was awful.” 2017 dawned and by now Selena seemingly had had enough of it all. So according to her, the best way to fight back was to take control of the story – considering it was her body story in the first place. Speaking to Ellen Degeneres about her famous Instagram post, Selena said, “Look, I didn’t want them to win. It’s so annoying when I see it all over the place, and everybody thinks they can bring me down. So my immediate response was I’m gonna post a picture and be like, ‘I’m happy with me, y’all.’” And that’s cool, Selena. But she did lose plenty pounds this year, and we aren’t just talking about The Weeknd!
5. Kelly Clarkson Let Herself Go
Kelly Clarkson is back with a rotund frame in 2017. And while she has been at shamed and body shamed, she doesn’t care and handles it with characteristic grace: “People think, ‘Oh, there’s something wrong with her. She’s putting on weight.’ I’m like, ‘Oh, no! I’m sorry, but that represents happiness in my emotional world. No one actually cares about your health. They just care about aesthetics. It’s when I’m fat that I’m happy. If you gauge your life on what other people think, you’re going to be in a constant state of panic trying to please everyone. People should just concentrate on their own lives and their own health and their own happiness, and whatever that looks like for you, be happy with it. When I was really skinny, I wanted to kill myself. I was miserable, like inside and out, for four years of my life. But no one cared because aesthetically you make sense. I don’t obsess about my weight, which is probably one of the reasons why other people have such a problem with it. There are just some people who are born skinny and with a great metabolism — that is not me!” If Kelly is happy at this weight, everyone should respect that.
4. Mama June Got In Shape
Well, this goes on to prove that if Mama June can do it, anyone can. The 38-year-old reality star flaunted her slimmed-down physique in sexy red lingerie and knee-high stockings in a new trailer for season two of her series, Mama June: From Not To Hot. This was the woman who once tipped the scales at a whopping 460 pounds. It took $75,000 for Mama June to undergo a gastric sleeve surgery, a chest augmentation, and skin removal surgery and this made her go down to 137 pounds, dropping from a size 18 to a size four. Of course, it wasn’t all nip and tuck. She also worked with a nutritionist and physical trainer to meet her goals and get from flab to fit – and it seems she has managed to keep off all that weight. The second season of her reality show will see her try and be a pageant mom and apparently Alana, who is her newly appointed life coach, is far tougher a coach than Mama June ever was.
3. Christian Bale Let Himself Go
The once-scrawny, and the then muscled and then pot-bellied, and then back to the muscled Christian Bale has let himself go in 2017. With those jowls and flab, he is unrecognizable. Of course it’s for a role again! The actor looks almost unrecognizable at the moment, as he gained weight to play Vice President Dick Cheney in the upcoming biopic Backseat. Asked about how he’d done it at the Toronto International Film Festival, he smiled and said, “I’ve just been eating a lot of pies.” Dick Cheney was a rotund guy and Bale is doing his portliest best. Cheney served as Bush’s VP between 2001 and 2009 and was a key player in US foreign policy during that time, particularly with regards to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He is regarded by many as the most powerful VP in US history. He is probably best remembered, however – at least in pop cultural terms – for accidentally shooting a lawyer during a quail hunt in 2006.
2. Alec Baldwin Got In Shape
Alec Baldwin looked good in his heyday, especially in Beetlejuice and The Hunt for Red October. After his crumbling marriage to Kim Basinger, those brooding good looks got replaced with rolls of fat. His career roll continued with 30 Rock and Baldwin remained the outspoken guy he always was. His ballooning weight didn’t stop him from meeting and falling in love with Hilaria Thomas, a 27-year-old yoga instructor. And this 59-year-old dude now looks better than ever. Diagnosed as pre-diabetic, he gave up sugar, which aided in his weight loss. Sugar, as he said on Twitter, “is truly a battle.” Baldwin also does pilates and spinning and with Hilaria as his wife, we are pretty sure yoga is part of his daily routine as well.

Reality star Lauren Goodger has lost a hell of a lot of weight in the past few years and in 2017, she wants to be “tiny” again. To reach her body goals, she apparently is living off cans of tuna and herself says that she is starving all the time – except that in her social media posts, she calls this natural and healthy. Umm, seriously? How is eating only cans of tuna healthy? So yes, despite the fake lips and chest, she is looking good, but is that really worth the cost to her health? Well, showbiz is a funny world, in any case. And reality showbiz is several steps crazier. She said, “I was 13 stone and I’m 9 stone now. And I lost that 4 stone over a period of six months when unflattering pictures of me running along a beach in a bikini came out. I was called a ‘disgusting beached whale’ and one girl said I looked like I weighed 40 stone. But it was those pictures that made me realize how fat I’d got and that I really had to do something about my weight or I’d be fat for life.”
