An industry that heavily relies on the support of regular people, many famous actors’ main job aside from what happens on set is to come off as likable during interviews or on social media. Despite that, when it comes to one-on-one interactions with individuals, the level of care put into coming off well dissipates for some of them. A bad business move (that is to say nothing about what it means about them as people since treating others poorly) no matter what it means for you is just an all-around crappy thing to do. Realizing all of this is what inspired us to put together this list of twenty famous actors who are jerks to their fans.
In order for someone to be up for possible inclusion on this list, he/she first and foremost needs to have been a star at one point in his/her life. For our purposes, he/she needs to have made his/her name as an actor but it doesn’t matter which medium in which that celeb worked so you could find TV or film stars included here. Next, there has to be credible accounts of that celeb being awful to fans in the past. Whether that comes in the form of blowing people off in an overtly rude way or something like telling their followers off, all that matters is that he/she did something obviously bad to a follower. Finally, we want to make it clear that we have not met any of the people listed here so we can’t attest to any of them being jerks personally but it seems clear that that is the case at least some of the time.
17. Jason Segel
Someone that is a part of several projects that have devoted fanbases, Jason Segel was a part of beloved series like How I Met Your Mother as well as Freaks and Geeks, and those are only two examples. An actor that has always come across as an awesome guy from afar, we want to make it clear that there are some reports out there that point to him being a fun but unruly star for a fan to meet. For instance, in an attempt to have fun with his followers, he revealed on The Tonight Show that when he is asked for a selfie, he goes another way and creates what he calls a walking video for them instead. However, there is at least one notable case where he and another star were reportedly very rude to fans, and as delightful as his fan videos sound, he is unwilling to go along with requests from his followers.
16. Scarlett Johansson
One of the biggest movie stars in the world today, Scarlett Johansson got her first movie role the same year that she turned ten and has worked consistently ever since. First making a name for herself when she starred in films The Horse Whisperer, Ghost World, and Lost in Translation among many others, there was no way to know how much her career would get. A pivotal part of the biggest film franchise in the history of the business, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is hard to overstate how important The Black Widow has been to the series. Someone who has spent most of her life as a public figure, she must be tired of the constant attention as she has spoken about fans being rude, and she is often unwilling to sign autographs for them.
15. Mike Myers
A former star of Saturday Night Live, during his tenure on that show, Mike Myers was able to create several characters that were much beloved in their time. Since then seen in movies like the Wayne’s World and Austin Powers franchise of films, he also starred in the tragically underseen films like So I Married an Axe Murderer and 54. Of course, that is to say nothing about the several times in which he lent his voice to the Shrek movies and how they’ve made him a part of millions of people’s early years. Said to be a total nightmare to deal with on set, his so-called diva behavior reportedly makes the lives of those he works “miserable.” Considering that that is how he treats the regular folks he sees on a regular basis, it is pretty easy to imagine what he would feel free to do when it comes to someone he’s likely to never see again.
14. Jennifer Lopez
An entertainer whose next move is always going to be hard to predict, it seems like we should never underestimate the skills of Jennifer Lopez. Starting out her career as a dancer on the show In Living Color, in the years since then, she started a music career that saw her release several albums that moved millions of units. Also a movie star, she was a major part of films like Selena, Anaconda, Out of Sight, The Cell, and far too many others to list here. She has, in fact, tried her hand at virtually every genre. As open to trying new things as she appears to be when it comes to her career, it seems like the opposite is true when it comes to being willing to be bothered by fans. For instance, evidently, when she was asked for an autograph by a hotel maid, there was such a big deal made about it that the worker lost her job.
13. Christian Bale
An extremely acclaimed performer, Christian Bale has taken an Academy Award home and that is only the most sought-after trophy he has in his collection. Best known for movies like the Dark Knight trilogy, American Psycho, The Prestige, and many other movies that have made a huge impact on people, he has many fans around the world. An actor whose artistic abilities are absolutely beyond reproach, he is fantastic at what he does but he doesn’t come across like he is a very cool person to be around. Someone who often comes across as a jerk and who had audio of him utterly berating a co-worker leaked, despite that, even we were surprised about a claim an ex-assistant of his made. Claiming that he was so nasty to a group of little girls that he made them cry, he may have been biased against his former boss but we have to say that the story seems believable based on his other behavior.
12. Gwyneth Paltrow
A fascinating figure in the celebrity world, Gwyneth Paltrow has found a lot of success as an actor but her image is complicated, to say the very least. Best known for her part in films like Seven, Shakespeare in Love, The Royal Tenenbaums, and the Iron Man movies, she has appeared in blockbuster hits and other movies that were critical darlings. However, ever since she became associated with the pompous brand that she created called Goop and has said a number of ridiculous things, she is also a highly hated figure. Reported to be an out-of-touch, snobbish, and rude person to be around by staffers at awards shows and neighbors alike, it seems quite obvious how she thinks everyday folks should be treated.
11. Shia LaBeouf
It may be hard to believe at this point but at one time not too long ago, Shia LaBeouf was poised to be one of the biggest stars in the entire film industry. Tapped to work with some of the biggest directors around, he has starred in movies that were helmed by the likes of Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone, and David Ayer among others. All of that took place prior to him seemingly having some kind of meltdown and acting in a highly erratic fashion that at times is interesting but, more often than not, is just plain weird. The craziest incident of him disrespecting a follower took place after Shia had fought a fellow bar patron. A guy trying to help him out after the fisticuffs wasn’t enough to calm the actor down as he then threatened to stab him with a knife, which is a crazy response.
10. Chevy Chase
Absolutely a legend of the comedy world, without the efforts of Chevy Chase, Saturday Night Live wouldn’t have been the same and that was just where he first made a major mark. Otherwise best known for films like the Vacation and Fletch film franchises as well as Caddyshack, Three Amigos, and the TV show Community, it seems like he should be nearly universally beloved. However, the man is such a massive tool to be around that the vast majority of his co-workers over the years have extremely negative things to say about him. On top of that, a website that tracks fan experiences doesn’t portray him in the best fashion and actor Rob Huebel approached him prior to being a recognizable face only to be slapped in the face. At least Chevy has since tried to claim that the blow was meant to be a joke.
9. Dan Aykroyd
From one respected comedic actor to another, this time around, we’re looking at Chevy’s peer, Dan Aykroyd, who also got his start on Saturday Night Live. A person that comes across as a regular dude, Dan didn’t seem like he would be a big movie star but with his appearances in Ghostbusters, The Blues Brothers, My Girl, and several others, he was just that. Based on beating the odds, you’d think that he would appreciate his position a bit more and think more of the people that helped make it possible. But apparently, he can be a real jerk. Often reported as a weirdo at best by fans, when taking questions while promoting his film Christmas with the Kranks, he also railed against the way people chose to celebrate the holiday.
8. Cameron Diaz
An actor whose career has been on a downswing over the last several years, we don’t see Cameron Diaz in a lot of notable movies recently, but she used to be a very big deal. Best known for movies like The Mask, There’s Something About Mary, The Holiday, as well as the Shrek and Charlie’s Angels movies, no matter where she goes from here, she has a spot in film history. It also seems as though she will go down in history as crappy to her fans as she has been at the top of articles that track the worst celebrities to ask autographs from. If that wasn’t enough, she was also involved in an aforementioned incident with Jason Segel where they reportedly were awful to fans at the premiere for a movie they made together.
7. Lea Michele
A show that briefly was a sensation, a lot of people forget about it, but at one time, Glee was one of the most talked about series on television. Focused on an ensemble cast, there were a few actors that could be seen as its main star and, at one time, Lea Michele was in the running. Since then seen in shows like Scream Queens and, most recently, the underrated and underseen show The Mayor, she has proven that she is not a one-hit wonder. We also hope that she is dealing with her fame better as even a fellow celebrity spoke poorly about the way she treated fans. In fact, she belongs here due in large part to the time Hailee Steinfeld revealed that she had met Lea in the past and as a big fan, she approached her only to be utterly rebuffed and sent away in tears.
6. Megan Fox
First made into an international superstar when she was cast in the first live-action Transformers film, Megan Fox took the world by storm and landed many high-profile roles at the time. Unfortunately, many of the projects she took on were not met with the success she’d hoped, including the likes of Jonah Hex and How to Lose Friends & Alienate People. However, she would end up getting another kick at the can when she was cast as April O’Neil in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films. Someone that made massive headlines when she insulted director Michael Bay, that brought some heat down on her as well as three crew members that worked with her called her awful. On top of that, she was the focus of an incident in which a fan stood outside waiting to give her a flower only to be ignored, and while she eventually apologized, that only came after an outcry.
5. Will Ferrell
A guy that comes off as awesome and welcoming during interviews in which he isn’t playing a character of some kind, it really bums us out that Will Ferrell is included here. A hilarious dude that was one of the most popular figures on the show Saturday Night Live for years on end, it was the perfect launching ground for his film career that followed. Best known today for flicks like Zoolander, Old School, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, and Step Brothers among others, he has been a part of some of the most quotable movie moments. Sadly, as much as we’ve enjoyed the things he has done in front of cameras, he has been listed as one of the worst celebrity autograph signers in the business which really sucks for fans that wait for hours.
4. Lindsay Lohan
A former child star that turned heads from an early time in her life, when Lindsay Lohan played two roles as twin sisters in The Parent Trap, she was able to create totally different characters for both. Years later returning to the spotlight as a teenager, she played the lead character in movies like Freaky Friday, Herbie: Fully Loaded, and Mean Girls. Unfortunately, since then, her life has become a trainwreck of sorts from the outside looking in, and she has been a consistent part of headlines in tabloids. For instance, she once attacked her fan, Tiffany Ava Mitchell, who offered her a free psychic reading. On top of that, Aubrey O’Day called her out as being rude to fans including claiming that she’d told a follower that she would return to take a picture with her and then blew her off.
3. Tobey Maguire
Someone that seemed to be everywhere in the movie industry for several years, since then, Tobey Maguire has largely disappeared from the scene but it seems like some people would welcome that. Cast as the titular superhero in a trio of Spider-Man movies, he was the originator of the role on the big screen, and he starred in two massively popular films as the character. Also memorable for other films like Pleasantville, The Cider House Rules, Seabiscuit, and a cameo in Tropic Thunder, in his time, he seemed to have a great eye for roles. Unfortunately, he didn’t seem to understand how to treat people, however, as his behavior was so bad that there is even an excerpt from a non-fiction book called Molly’s Game about him being a jerk.
2. Russell Crowe
An actor that will always be associated with being a very passionate guy, if you are a director trying to get a performance out of Russell Crowe, that is great but it isn’t so great for fans of his. An award-winning actor that took home an Academy Award for Gladiator, he was also nominated for his work in The Insider and A Beautiful Mind. Despite all of the good work he has done in front of cameras, however, his reputation also is largely influenced by him fighting people, including incidences with regular working Joes like any of us. If that weren’t enough, one night when he was playing music in front of an audience, he told fans of his to shut up if they couldn’t clap in time with the song.
1. Sandra Bullock
A person that comes off so well in front of cameras and crowds, we always thought Sandra Bullock was a kindhearted and cool person and that may be the case, but her history with fans is not squeaky clean. World-famous due to her part in movies like Speed, A Time to Kill, Miss Congeniality, The Proposal, and Gravity, if she is in a film, there is a pretty good chance that it will come out well. On the other hand, if you meet her in the street, the odds you’ll have a great experience is lower than we would have expected. In fact, she reportedly covered her face and then yelled at a wheelchair veteran simply due to him having the audacity to ask for her autograph. If that isn’t awful, we don’t know what is.
