20 Celebrity Pairings You Think Are Friends (But Actually Dislike Each Other)

It is really silly, but we all know it is true no matter how much we may try to deny it. A lot of people begin to invest in celebrities in a big-enough way that they enjoy finding out about their personal life and especially following their relationships. That may make you think of couples, but the same holds true for famous pals as there is something fun about seeing the sincere fondness between people like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon for instance. However, it is also true that we don’t know what is really going on behind the scenes and in some cases, there have been stories that broke out, making it clear that some so-called friends aren’t as they seem. Realizing all of this is what inspired us to put together this list of twenty celebrity pairings you think are friends but actually dislike one another.

In order for a pair to be up for consideration for possible inclusion on this list, they first off need to both be famous to a certain group of people. It doesn’t matter what they did to earn their following as long as they have one so you may find athletes, actors, musicians, wrestlers, “reality” stars, or other kinds of stars included here. Next, there needs to be a perception among some that the two people are at least friendly, if not close. Finally, there has to be evidence out there that shows that things are not as they seem, and they appear to dislike one another, or at least one of them feels that way.

20. Jay-Z & Kanye West

Via hollywoodlife.com

Two of the biggest rappers in the game, considering that Jay-Z and Kanye West are part of an industry that is largely based on “beefs,” it shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise that they’ve been fighting. However, if you Google their names in any kind of combination and check the image side of things, you will see loads of shots of them with big smiles on their faces together.

Formerly very close friends, Kanye was discovered by Jay who worked with him as a producer before signing him to his label, Rock-A-Fella Records. Working together several times on various tracks over the following years, they made fantastic music together. Then things began to go south, and Jay and his wife, Beyoncé, didn’t attend West’s marriage to Kim Kardashian. Next, when Kim was robbed in Paris, her husband felt that Jay was not very supportive. and he ranted about his former friend on stage more than once which led to them dissing each other in tracks.

19. The Rock & Vin Diesel

Via tweaktown.com

Two massive movie stars, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been called franchise Viagra while Vin Diesel helped build the Fast & Furious franchise as well as being a part of Guardians of the Galaxy. Beginning to work together when The Rock was added to the cast of Fast Five, the pair began working together regularly and at first seemed like quick pals. Something that we expected as both men seem to have a slew of friends that are very loyal to them, it seems that their work has come between them.

Starting with the filming of The Fate of the Furious, it seems that tensions arose on set between them with each calling out perceived unprofessionalism in the other. Things got even worse lately, however, when it was announced that the next film in the series would be pushed back so The Rock can star in a spin-off, which has renewed Vin’s anger at his co-star.

18. Jim Carrey And Tommy Lee Jones

Via cinepremiere.com.mx

Alright, alright we admit it. These two seem like their personalities couldn’t be more different. First off, Jim Carrey is someone with a manic and silly demeanor which he seems to enjoy using to make the masses laugh. On the other hand, you have Tommy Lee Jones, a very serious actor that seems to be very interested in his craft and takes himself and others very seriously.

As such, they may not seem like they would be friends. But if you’ve seen Batman Forever, you may have drawn a very different conclusion. Acting together in many scenes of the film, they play off one another in it quite well, and considering that they are in close proximity to one another a lot, it seems like there is some affection between them. However, Jim revealed in an interview that Tommy told him, “I hate you. I really don’t like you” as well as “I cannot sanction your buffoonery.”

17. Gwyneth Paltrow & Winona Ryder

Via nydailynews.com

Two of the most respected actors of their generation, let alone of all time, at various times, both Winona Ryder and Gwyneth Paltrow have been huge stars in the running for most in-demand roles. At one time seen together enough that observers would refer to them as inseparable, the public quickly got the idea that they were very good friends.

However, if you stopped paying attention to their relationship at this point, then you may not know that they are far from that today. With Winona essentially accusing Gwyneth of stealing her Oscar-winning role in Shakespeare in Love from her, she seems to believe that Paltrow stole her script and snagged the role out from underneath her. In fact, it seems like she has such a distaste for Gwyneth that she wrote about feeling “deep relief and happiness” upon finding out her frenemy, presumed to be Paltrow, suffered a humiliation.

16. Kenny Baker & Anthony Daniels

Via movieweb.com

A pair of actors that will forever be linked in the minds of fans across the world, Kenny Baker died in 2016. But if there is an afterlife, we’re sure he still wishes that that wasn’t the case. The two men inside of the R2-D2 and C-3PO suits during the filming of the original Star Wars trilogy, they both also had a hand in the depiction of the characters in the Prequels and Holiday Special.

A pair of characters that were important to one another on the big screen, behind the scenes, the actors responsible for them hated one another. Consistently insulting one another during interviews, they dislike each other enough that Baker told someone attempting to put together a reunion, “if he comes, I won’t be there,” in reference to Daniels. A feud based on a mutual distaste for one another and a lack of respect, Anthony once even said that “he might as well be a bucket” in reference to Kenny’s work as R2-D2.

15. Jennifer Aniston & Chelsea Handler

Via celebrityinsider.org

A friendship that always seemed a little bit odd to begin with, despite that, there was a time when it seemed like Jennifer Aniston and Chelsea Handler were a very close-knit duo. Still, Chelsea is an outspoken comedian who took no prisoners on her talk show while Jennifer is seen as one of the most elegant put-together figures in Hollywood today.

However, it seems like it isn’t the differences in their personalities that led to their friendship ending. Instead, it seems like trust is at the core of things for both of them as Chelsea was quoted as saying, “If you lie to me or you lie about me, I can’t take that,” in reference to her one-time pal. As for Jennifer’s side of things, it seems like she felt that she needed someone more loyal to her around.

14. Katy Perry & Rihanna

Via lipstickalley.com

Two of the biggest singing stars in the world today, Katy Perry and Rihanna have both released a long list of songs that have inspired the masses to get up off their seats and dance their hearts out. A pair that also tends to show up at a lot of the same events, like award shows or red carpets, they have interacted a great deal over the years.

At one time seen seated beside one another several times and appearing to have a great personal relationship going based on their body language, things have changed for them as of late. In fact, according to sources, they both go to great efforts to avoid each other at showbiz events now, and when Rihanna threw a large charity bash, Katy was notably absent.

13. Julia & Eric Roberts

Via Pinterest.com

There is just something that seems so sad about siblings torn asunder, and for many, many years, Julia and Eric Roberts were one of the most notable examples of that. Both actors that have found a great deal of success in their business of choice, there is no doubt that Julia Roberts is the much larger deal of the two, but Eric has had an impressive and consistent career too.

Evidently extremely close at one point, she even spent time crashing at his home before she became a star. But when Eric’s ex-girlfriend fought him for custody of their child, Julia sided with her. Tearing their relationship apart, as a result, she must have thought that she was doing what was right for the child, but at the time, we can understand how betrayed Eric must have felt. Luckily, things are a little less frosty between them today, but they still have yet to appear in public together even once in the last several decades.

12. Kim Kardashian & Paris Hilton

Via glamour.com

A pair of women that seem like they would be the only ones that could really relate to what each other has been through, the road to fame that each walked is remarkably similar. A pair of socialites that rose to prominence when private and intimate videos of them were spread online, each would go on to star in extremely popular “reality” shows. Both going on to appear in a few films, neither of them has been able to make themselves over into movie stars, however.

Former friends that partied together a lot, it therefore seems like a shame that Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian are no longer pals. It seems that the anger between them stems from a competition for attention and insults that they have leveled at one another in public, and we’re sure it is no coincidence that Kim’s rise to fame came as Hilton’s ended.

11. CM Punk & Colt Cabana

Via Twitter.com

Someone who is well-known for being volatile when he is approached by fans in a way he feels isn’t right, it is clear that CM Punk was more motivated by his craft than fame or money. That is why it seemed so right that his closest friend was Colt Cabana, a wrestler he worked alongside early in his career but was never anywhere close to as big of a star as he was.

That said, Colt had a very devoted fanbase that followed his career and podcast which was the medium that Punk chose to express his grievances with the WWE after he walked away from the company. An episode that resulted in the pair both being sued by a WWE doctor with the support of the company, it caused CM to feel even more anger towards his former bosses. According to reports, it also led to the end of their longstanding friendship after Colt attended a WWE event which Punk saw as a betrayal.

10. Tisha Campbell & Martin Lawrence

Via Twitter.com

There is one thing that we know for sure. If you star with someone on a popular sitcom for a number of years, there will always be a link between you. A perfect example of that, Tisha Campbell-Martin and Martin Lawrence starred in the show Martin together as onscreen husband and wife for a number of years.

Showcasing a great deal of chemistry and comedic timing with one another early on, millions of fans fell for the dynamic between them. But behind the scenes, things got horrible by the end of the show. In fact, Tisha ended up suing her co-star and the producers of the series for alleged s*xual harassment and physical abuse at Martin’s hand before the show came to an end. Refusing to even share a single scene during the last season of the show–very understandably in her case–it is safe to say that they belong on this list.

9. Lady Gaga & Madonna

Via trace.tv

Two singers that seem like they should be kindred spirits of the highest caliber, Madonna and Lady Gaga are both pop stars with nuanced images that come off as very sincere to fans around the world. Both able to find a huge measure of success, they are also very outspoken about their support for the LGBTQ community which has led to their followings being made up of a lot of the same people.

However, despite all the many things they have in common, it seems that mutual respect isn’t one of them. In fact, according to reports, Madonna was annoyed by the fact that she felt that Gaga’s song “Born the Way” ripped off her tune “Express Yourself,” and she has been happy to talk about that. Quoted as saying that Gaga’s song “sounds very similar” and that she feels that “she references me a lot in her work,” it appears that she doesn’t subscribe to the idea that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

8. Demi Lovato & Selena Gomez

Via Time.com

A pair of pop stars that are among the most beloved figures in the industry today, it is pretty neat that Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez have such a long history with one another. Going all the way back to when they were both a part of the kid’s show Barney and Friends, both of them would then go on to be a pivotal part of The Disney Channel. Furthermore, in 2009, they released a song together called “One and the Same.”

It seems like things have not always been so rosy between them, however, as evidenced by Demi’s comments about needing to “ask Taylor” when someone inquired about Selena. Demi also alluded to not being able to trust her former friend, and while they reconciled, Demi then unfollowed Selena on social media. At this point, we’re not clear if they are pals or hate each other this week but it seems clear that a new round of hate is likely around the corner either way.

7. Kevin Smith & Ben Affleck

Via pagesix.com

Two men that, at one time, was seen as one of the best-known examples of directors and actors working together over and over, Ben Affleck has even joked about owing his career to Kevin Smith in the past. Teaming up on movies like Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and Jersey Girl among others, during this period of time, they seemed so inseparable that Kevin appeared in cameos in Ben’s Daredevil movie.

No longer pals today, according to Kevin, it was Ben’s marriage to Jennifer Garner that tore them asunder as she didn’t appreciate his sophomoric sense of humor. Kevin went even further than that as he also said that he thinks Ben “probably don’t care for me at all anymore.” But at least, neither of them badmouth one another in public.

6. Paris Hilton & Nicole Richie

Via zimbio.com

From one set of friends that, once upon a time, were completely associated with each other to another, this time around, we are looking at the “reality” TV friends Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie. Starring in the show The Simple Life for four years together, the series was based on the pair of wealthy socialites going to live with everyday people in “real life.” A one-note concept, at first, the series was a smash hit, and the two of them went everywhere together. But after a while, it was too repetitive, and the show came to an end as did the friendship of its stars.

Reportedly, the reason for their falling out was that Nicole played the infamous private tape that Paris starred in to a party celebrating a big event in the life of Ms. Hilton. If true, we get why Paris was mad. But either way, she went public with her anger when she was quoted as saying, “Nicole and I are no longer friends. Nicole knows what she did.”

5. Jamie Dornan & Dakota Johnson

Via Bustle.com

A pair that have starred in two hit films together at this point and have another on the way next year, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan have spent a lot of time together on set. The main actors in the salacious Fifty Shades films, more than just sharing screen time with one another, they have also shot a long list of intimate scenes with one another.

You would therefore hope that they get along. But, according to many stories, that is actually not the case at all. In fact, when directly questioned about the wall of tension that many perceive to be between them, Dakota opted not to deny the claims. Instead, she commented on the tabloid nature of the public by saying, “We hate each other and we’re having an affair, so everybody’s right.” Referring to the fact that some have reported that the stars had an affair together, that could easily be true, and they grew to dislike one another later, which people have every reason to believe.

4. Liam & Noel Gallagher

Via independent.co.uk

The two men at the epicenter of one of the most successful British bands of all time, Oasis, Noel Gallagher and his brother, Liam, have spent years of their lives recording music and touring together. Something that many brothers would love to experience together when it comes to these two, they have sniped at one another in private and public throughout that entire period.

Also volatile with a long list of other famous folks, it seems obvious that these two are just incapable of getting along with people, but you’d think that brotherly love would break through that. However, as recently as October of 2017, Liam Gallagher was on The Graham Norton Show and was quoted as saying that they “don’t like each other,” in reference to his brother.

3. Leighton Meester & Blake Lively

Via mtv.com.au

The two main actors in the successful show Gossip Girl, Blake Lively and Leighton Meester played a pair of students that would waffle between being enemies and the best friends around. Reportedly, that was a pretty good representation of the relationship the actors had as they began on good terms, broke apart for a few years, became friendly again as the show ended, and don’t speak now.

An up and down that would give most of us whiplash no matter how you look at things, it seems that they mixed together like oil and water a lot over the years. We’re sure that is a huge disappointment to many fans of the series that made them both stars as they seemed so close on their screens.

2. Bea Arthur & Betty White

Via closerweekly.com

Stars of a show whose theme song began with the words “thank you for being a friend,” Betty White and Bea Arthur’s work on The Golden Girls together made millions of fans adore them both. Appearing in many episodes together in a show that would air for seven seasons, at the heart of the show was the bond between the ladies, and it appeared like these two truly cared about one another.

It seems like they should be proud of their acting skills as in real life, it is abundantly clear that they were not close when the cameras stopped rolling. We say that because Bea made several derogatory statements about Betty, the worst of which was when she called her former co-star a “c**t” while attending a lifetime achievement award ceremony.

1. Mick Jagger & Keith Richards

Via globalnews.ca

The two main figures at the heart of The Rolling Stones, Keith Richards and Mick Jagger have spent decades of their lives working closely together. Best known for songs like “Honky Tonk Women,” “Start Me Up,” “Angie,” “Brown Sugar,” and “Paint It Black” among far too many more to list here, nobody can question the musical chemistry that these two share.

However, according to more than one memoir written about their careers, they don’t get along well and would have parted ways long ago if performing with one another wasn’t so financially rewarding. If there was any question about the validity of these stories, Richards himself put many of them to rest with his 2010 autobiography Life. Including passages where he revealed the other band mates nicknamed Jagger “Her Majesty” and “That B*tch Brenda,” it also said that Mick became “unbearable in the 1980’s.” Those are but a few examples of the shots taken, and worse yet, Keith didn’t warn his band mate who was embarrassed, betrayed, and angered by the book.
