16 Stars Who Say ‘No’ To Photoshop

It should be no surprise to anyone here that most celebrities experience some form of Photoshop work in their lives. Hell, any model or even minor celebrity who has ever appeared on a billboard, ad, or magazine cover has definitely experienced the wonder of Photoshop. But not every model or celebrity really enjoys this experience.

Some of them do everything they can to rail against people who think you need to look like a perfect, airbrushed model. But even some of those celebrities are completely ignored when it comes time for a magazine to publish their photos. Magazines will even go so far as to breach their contracts just to have what they think is a prettier picture than the original image.

Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lawrence, Beyonce, and even Brad Pitt are among the higher end of these models and celebrities who have started to wage war against the idea that everyone has to be perfect. They all understand that aging is natural and that there’s no reason to hide who they really are. At least it’s good to know that there’s something to admire in some celebrities – they don’t all have bad coke habits!

16. Brad Pitt

Why not get an A-lister in here? Brad Pitt has often been known as one of the hottest men in Hollywood. But that doesn’t change the fact that he’s human. Which means he’s getting old. Not everyone could handle that fact in that business. But Pitt has embraced it. He went out of his way to do a cover shoot for W Magazine that would have no Photoshop done to it at all! He even booked a photographer who is notoriously well known for capturing flaws in people. Of course, what many people consider flawed, Pitt considers reality. It’s too bad that the advertising industry still has far more sway over people than Brad Pitt. People might start caring less about looking like perfect models…because there is no such thing in reality.

15. Lady Gaga

It’s amazing how different someone can look when they have digital work done to them. I happen to be a photographer myself and I’ve known too many people who really like having the work done to them. It makes them completely other people. What I love about Lady Gaga is that she gave a speech at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards where she spoke out against Glamour‘s use of Photoshop and digital alterations. “It is fair to write about the change in your magazines. But what I want to see is the change on your covers… When the covers change, that’s when culture changes.” What’s awesome about this is that Gaga had just that year done a cover of Glamour where she alleges she looked totally different than her usual self.

14. Kate Winslet

Ok, this really is too much. It’s insane that anyone thinks the right frame of these photos is at all realistic. No one looks like that. At least not in real life. Winslet once did a shoot for GQ and was pretty annoyed at the result. “I actually have a Polaroid that the photographer gave me on the day of the shoot… I can tell you they’ve reduced the size of my legs by about a third. For my money, it looks pretty good the way it was taken.” It’s nice when someone is actually comfortable enough to say that they’re happy with the way a photo has turned out just as is. It’s not a common thing. But she even went on to say “I do not look like that and, more importantly, I don’t desire to look like that. I am proud, you know.”

13. Zendaya

This is pretty incredible. Along with Lorde, Zendaya has also spoken out as a very young woman who is being manipulated by the media. When doing a shoot for the Modeliste Magazine, Zendaya noticed that the final shots had removed quite a bit of her hips, torso, and legs. She’s also made to look more tanned than she is. I think she looks just fine in the original shot, personally. And I have to give it to Modeliste. At least they did go out of their way to pull the images from their site and they even fixed the issue of the magazine that had the heavily edited images. That’s pretty good on them. I think most publications wouldn’t be able to care less, or might apologize but wouldn’t drop the actual cover or article photos.

12. Madonna

Alright, look… Madonna was not one of the women I researched who actually spoke out against Photoshop. But it was a big deal when before and after shots of her were leaked. I figured you might just like to take a look at just how big the difference can be between original and edited shots. Given the platform that Madonna has, I find it pretty said that she hasn’t said an awful lot about Photoshopping and heavy editing. Of course, it does allow her to still look young in photo shoots, much like makeup does when she’s on stage. And hey, that’s not to say that Madonna isn’t still awesome. She is a huge advocate of healthy living and exercise. Otherwise, she really wouldn’t be able to do all of the stuff she does in a day. But I think she should try to squeeze in some support for those who embrace their natural look.

11. Coco Rocha

For those of you who don’t know of Coco Rocha… I feel sad for you. She is a gorgeous model! Some of you might find her a bit strange, and you may not like that she won’t pose nude or in skimpy lingerie, but you cannot deny that she is never boring. Either way, in a shoot for Elle she was posing in a body suit. But the editors decided that they should make her a little more risque than she ever agreed to be. “For my recent Elle Brazil cover shoot I wore a body suit under a sheer dress, but recently discovered that the body suit was Photoshopped out to give the impression that I am showing much more skin than I actually was or am comfortable with. This was specifically against my expressed verbal and written direction.” Daring move to go against a model’s contract.

10. Ashley Benson

For those of you who don’t watch Pretty Little Liars (don’t worry, you’re not alone), Ashley Benson is one of the hot leads. However, she’s not hot in the same way that many people might think based on a poster released as a promo for the show. This is what she had to say about the poster online: “Saw this floating around… hope it’s not the poster. Our faces in this were from 4 years ago… and we all look ridiculous. Way too much Photoshop. We all have flaws. No one looks like this. It’s not attractive.” I think that pretty well says it all. It’s great when people come out and let everyone know that that’s just not the way people look every day. And I have to say that the everyday shot of her to the left of this entry is plenty hot without any Photoshop work.

9. Jennifer Lawrence

Alright, so here’s the thing. Jennifer Lawrence doesn’t really often go out of her way to speak out against Photoshop specifically. She has certainly made comments stating that many of her photos are edited that way, and she admits that no one really looks like that. And it’s nice to know that she’s not afraid to have before images of her shoots put out there to compare against the Photoshopped versions. Lawrence is very well known for speaking up for women in general though and therefore deserves to make it into this article. When talking about the “perfect” look Photoshop gives she said “You have to see past it. You look how you look, you have to be comfortable. What are you going to do? Be hungry every single day to make other people happy? That’s just dumb.”

8. Keira Knightley

Say what you will about Keira Knightley. I’m sure you have plenty to say. Sure, she’s really not one of the best actors in the world and she does often look either nauseous and/or mildly shocked…but she has done something very good for women around the world. Interview Magazine asked her to pose topless for an issue of theirs. But Knightley had a specific condition when she agreed to do the shoot. “OK, I’m fine doing the topless shot so long as you don’t make them any bigger or retouch.’ Because it does feel important to say it really doesn’t matter what shape you are.” That’s pretty awesome. Knightley is fairly flat. And given how often publications like to show off skin, it makes sense that Interview might want to make her a bit bigger. But the images were published without any enhancement.

7. Troian Bellisario

Troian Bellisario is one of the stars on Pretty Little Liars. After costar Ashley Benson spoke out against a promo poster for the show, Bellisario fully backed up her friend and fellow actor. In her words of support, she said the following: “My hips and thighs are a part of me (even though they magically weren’t in some shots! This industry seems to invest more in perfection than in flaw.” And Bellisario has completely nailed the industry in one social media statement. The industry focuses on perfection instead of flow. People don’t want to think about flaws and that’s because the industry makes it seem like people shouldn’t be flawed…but we all are. Either way, the above image is one of the shots Bellisario was talking about when she said she couldn’t see her hips or thighs.

6. Gisele Bundchen

Gisele Bundchen is a pretty gorgeous model who has been going out of her way to promote photo shoots done without makeup or touchup. It’s pretty amazing that she has managed to be such a successful model given that stance. But it’s true. After a shoot with BLK DNM, Bundchen had some great words for the head director of the shoot. “I loved his approach because I feel like women should be really real and raw and it doesn’t really happen anymore. I love that feeling of, you know, we are women – we are so different. Our imperfections are what makes us unique and beautiful.” It’s amazing to know that there are both models and photographers out there willing to really go out there and push the natural look in the media.

5. Lorde

“I find this curious – two photos from today, one edited so my skin is perfect and one real. remember flaws are ok :-)” That was a tweet from the young and famous Lorde. It’s crazy that even live shots like the one above on the left are put through Photoshop as well. Shouldn’t live shots just capture the actual moment like the shot on the right? Lorde at least seems to think so. And good for her considering just how young she is. She’s only 20 years old. She even went on to call out Taylor Swift for how perfect she always tries to look. Lorde is convinced that Swift is not painting a good picture for young girls. Instead, it seems like Swift is painting a Photoshop perfection that young girls can’t have. At least Lorde can be a role model…at least in that sense.

4. Jamie Lee Curtis

Jamie Lee Curtis has always seemed sort of on the fringe of attractive Hollywood stars, but she has never really cared. She cares more about being real than being smoking hot. For censorship reasons, I couldn’t how the unedited nude photos that Curtis did to show how a real woman her age looks, but this is what she had to say about it. “There’s a reality to the way I look without my clothes on. I don’t have great thighs. I have very big breasts and a soft, fatty little tummy. And I’ve got back fat. People assume that I’m walking around in little spaghetti-strap dresses. It’s insidious—Glam Jamie, the Perfect Jamie, the great figure, blah, blah, blah. And I don’t want the unsuspecting forty-year-old women of the world to think that I’ve got it going on. It’s such a fraud. And I’m the one perpetuating it.”

3. Beyonce

Beyonce once did a shoot for H&M… who am I kidding? She likely has done several shoots for H&M. Either way though, there was a specific shoot that she detested. Why? Because the editors of the photos figured it would be in good taste to slim down her body a bit. Given that Beyonce, much like J-Lo and Mariah Carey has made a lot of money from her “ghetto booty”, it makes perfect sense that she would be a little pissed off. Some publications wouldn’t care who they took pictures of and would still alter them. But not this one. Not of Beyonce. She refused to let them publish any photos of her unless they published the unaltered, full-bodied ones. “She’s a true diva and was furious that she had been given such a snubbing,” said a source of hers to The Sun after the incident.

2. Meghan Trainor

“One photo was altered so I looked tanned and I was angry because I love my snow-white skin. I rock it. There are a few covers coming out that I’m frightened about. I’ve said, ‘Do you think Beyonce releases a picture she hasn’t approved?’” Trainor is right to say that. Beyonce doesn’t allow photos she hasn’t approved. What’s interesting about Trainor though is while she enjoys her snow-white skin, she doesn’t actually seem to think “it’s all about that bass”. Why do I say that? Well, take a look at the shot above from one of her videos. She has control over these, and she definitely has lost some weight in the frame on the right. She might be an inspiration to thousands of girls, but she should remind herself of that fact so that she can stay on message.

1. Colbie Caillat

If you’ve not heard the music of Colbie Caillat, then don’t fear…you’re not alone. But that’s not the point here. Caillat has come out with some rather inspirational music to try and support those female youth who think they need to look a certain way and she made sure to shoot the video without wearing any makeup. “We see people looking perfect on TV and compare ourselves to them.I remember when I was a teenager, I was so confused about how I should look, and I tried changing every single thing about myself…If girls at that age were just comfortable in their own skin it will benefit them for the future.” I have to say that she’s got a pretty good outlook on the way kids should grow up with media around. She managed to get past all of that stuff. But some people obsess over how they look and end up hurting themselves.
