Playing video games is often associated with immaturity. If adults consider themselves gamers, they’re often looked down on by people. At least, that used to be the case. With the increase in popularity of comic book movies, video game popularity is at an all-time high. Those who previously ridiculed gamers find themselves wasting countless hours on their PS4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch.
But spending a Saturday afternoon playing video games is still considered immature, especially when compared to other hobbies. However, many of the games that everyone knows and loves are meant for an older audience. Games like Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat, and even Call of Duty aren’t meant for kids or young teenagers. Whether parents just don’t care about the games their kids play or don’t understand the rating system, they’ll buy games that are way too adult.
On this list are a number of iconic video game characters that are way too adult for the people playing the games. There are characters that strip in slow motion, are designed with boob physics in mind, or are generally wearing nothing at all. To really emphasize how adult these characters are, you’ll find a photo of a cosplayer next to the original game design.
15. Samus Aran — Metroid
For a woman that spends her entire gaming career in a thick metal spacesuit, Samus sure is sexy. The reason that Samus is featured on this list is due to how game developers originally revealed her to be a woman.
In the first Metroid (1986) game, Samus first appears in a thick spacesuit. As you fight through two-dimensional landscapes on the planet Zebes, you gain power-ups, making Samus’s weak-powered beam even stronger. You slowly transform into this badass traveler determined to hunt Space Pirates in the far reaches of space. If the player completed the game in under five hours, Samus takes off her suit and is revealed to be a bikini-clad woman with blonde hair. The game intentionally led players to think that Samus was a man, using male pronouns in the game’s manual.
14. Juliet Starling — Lolipop Chainsaw
Lolipop Chainsaw is a hack-and-slash video game that became popular almost entirely because of Juliet Starling. In the game, after her boyfriend is eaten by zombies, Starling equips herself with a chainsaw, fighting her way through hordes of zombies in her high school. Wearing nothing but her cheerleader uniform (with her boyfriend’s head attached to her hip), Starling quickly became one of the most sexualized video-game characters of all time. The game conveniently takes place on Starling’s 18th birthday, which doesn’t make these sexual depictions illegal. Without a doubt, this is an intentional move by developers to make Starling as young as possible without it being weird.
Juliet Starling is a cosplayer favorite. Jessica Nigri was hired to cosplay as Starling for a marketing campaign for the game. The game didn’t receive great reviews, which is perhaps why the game resorted to relying on Nigri’s sex appeal to build hype.
13. Rikku — Final Fantasy X-2
When you first meet Rikku in Final Fantasy X, she’s dressed in an armored wet suit that makes her look pretty unattractive. You can’t even see her face. It was a surprising move for the Final Fantasy franchise, considering how often they sexualize their characters. In fact, after being separated from Rikku just as soon as you meet her, it seems that you won’t run into her again. But a little later on in the game, when you finally meet her again, the game changes to an animated cut scene as she starts to take off her wet suit. The camera follows Rikku’s hand as she unzips the back of her wet suit before cutting to another character’s wide-eyed expression.
Even for a game that has characters with unprecedented levels of cleavage, the skimpy outfit that Rikku was wearing under her armor is what she remains in for the rest of the game. For a number of preteen boys new to the Final Fantasy franchise, Rikku was their first video-game crush. In Final Fantasy X-2, Rikku wears even less, sporting nothing but a small bikini top and a miniskirt.
12. Literally Any Character — Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball
Dead Or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball was a spin-off game that was vastly different from the other Dead Or Alive games. Originally a series of fighting games, the rest of the Dead Or Alive franchise has been outshined by the success of the beach volleyball game. The game was an attempt to cash in on the exploitation of their female characters. While the other games in the series are incredibly violent, they only received a Teen rating. The beach volleyball game received a Mature rating because of its sexual nature. Without a doubt, there was some poor parent who thought that Dead Or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball was a family-friendly sports game.
The series continues today; Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 was released in 2016. Some of the game’s features include a “butt battle,” tan lines, a suntanning system, and it allows players to force two female characters to date. It’s as close as you can get to being an Adult Only game, while still only holding a Mature rating.
11. Jade — Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat was originally an arcade game known for its brutal violence and sexy characters. One of these characters, Jade, was originally just an Easter-egg color swap of Kitana but has since become her own supporting character in the franchise. Though she was once an assassin in the service of Shao Kahn, Jade’s role in the game was almost entirely reversed when the series was rebooted in 2011, as she was fighting against Shao Kahn.
Jade is a fan favorite, often regarded as the best character when it comes to smooth gameplay. Despite her popularity, in the most recent installment of the series, Mortal Kombat X, Jade was omitted from the game. She makes a brief cameo appearance in Kitana’s ending. Hopefully, developers aren’t planning on returning Jade to her former Easter-egg status. Then again, it doesn’t really matter. She’s just Kitana with different attacks.
10. Lara Croft — Tomb Raider
Since she first starred in Tomb Raider (1996), Lara Croft has been the subject of controversy. Though she was first criticized for having unrealistic body proportions, the attitude toward Lara Croft quickly changed, as she was one of the first lead female characters in a video game. It wasn’t until the Tomb Raider games began to lose popularity that many critics felt she was nothing more than an animated blow-up doll. In recent games, Lara Croft’s outfits are a lot more conservative than they were in previous Tomb Raider games. She’s kept the tank top but lost her booty shorts and absurdly large bust.
The series was nearly dead in the water after Angelina Jolie starred as Lara Croft in two different Tomb Raider movies. In everyone’s opinion, Jolie is one of the sexiest of all time. If one of the sexiest actresses of all time is portraying a video game character, no one should doubt that she’s one of the sexiest video game characters of all time. With that in mind, her look is a little too adult for a lot of young video game fans.
9. Ivy Valentine — Soul Calibur
Ivy Valentine is so sexy that when I would play against her in Soul Calibur, I would pause the game when my parents walked in the room. You would never say that she has clothes on; she has fabric loosely strung around her body. She’s the most inappropriately dressed video-game character of all time, and she’s always used to market Soul Calibur.
Ivy Valentine is purposefully designed to look and act like a dominatrix. With any sexy female character, many critics have stated that Valentine needs a complete character makeover. Considering she’s supposed to be fighting for her life, her outfit is often called preposterous because of how impractical it is. Originally praised for empowering women, Valentine’s outfits got smaller and smaller as the series progressed. By the time she appeared in Soul Calibur IV, she might as well have been fighting naked. Many gamers, game reviewers, and critics outside of the industry stated that even for a Japanese video game, the developers had crossed the line.
8. Tracer — Overwatch
Overwatch is the hottest competitive video game to be released in recent years. In terms of eSports, Overwatch is giving League of Legends, Dota 2, and CS: GO a run for their money. Tracer is the original Overwatch character and was used through many stages of development. Developers used Tracer to show how well the game’s mechanics worked and, because of how she looked, would’ve helped sell the game to investors. Blizzard chose to use Tracer on the game’s cover to contrast almost every other shooter on the market, which used tough-looking men on the cover. In addition to being part of the early development of Overwatch, Tracer is one of few LGBT characters.
Despite being Blizzard’s new pride and joy, fans have paid extra attention to her bootylicious pants. The straps on her body don’t really do anything other than highlight her figure. We’re not complaining, but other people were. Many fans were saying that Tracer’s victory pose needlessly flaunted her assets, and these fans demanded that it be changed. It eventually was.
7. Fiora — League Of Legends
For the most part, Fiora is one of the most modestly dressed female characters in League of Legends. Her base outfit is pretty conservative, which, considering her play style, suits her pretty well. It’s when looking at her other outfits available for purchase that you’ll realize that Fiora is really very adult in nature.
In addition to her insanely small waist for her Pool Party skin, there’s a skin called “Headmistress Fiora,” where she’s dressed like a school teacher found in adult movies. Instead of a sword, she uses a ruler as her weapon of choice. The way Fiora is positioned in the photo for the skin gives you the impression that you’re in for a spanking from the headmistress. Whoever designed this skin was hoping to trigger something in boys who attend schools with headmistresses. Or maybe the designer was using a creative medium to bring his fetish to life. Who knows?
6. Morrigan Aensland — Darkstalkers
Morrigan Aensland needs her own game again. Though she appears in the Marvel vs Capcom games and is considered one of the most iconic Capcom characters, she hasn’t had her own video game since Darkstalkers 3 (1993). With an outfit that’s gripping her body slightly above her nipples, it’s hard to justify why she’s dressed the way she is, other than that the developers wanted her to be sexy.
Like any sexy character, cosplayers love to dress up as Morrigan Aensland. She may be a little too dark for most video games, but Morrigan Aensland strikes a chord with people into dark fashion. This may include goths, punk rockers, emo kids, or anyone who has a particular taste for vampire chicks. Even for those of us who aren’t usually attracted to this look, you have to admit she looks amazing. But you have to admit, a half naked vampire is a little too adult for video games with a Teen rating.
5. Taki — Soul Calibur
Despite being one of the more-clothed female characters in Soul Calibur, Taki is way too adult for most fans of the franchise. If you haven’t noticed, she has an absurdly large chest, pushed together by straps that go under her arm and over her shoulder. Through these straps, Soul Calibur developers are able to show off their infamous breast physics.
As previously mentioned, as the Soul Calibur franchise progressed, the boobs of the characters got larger while their outfits got skimpier. Some fans took this to the next level, comparing the boob physics between games, noticing that the breasts bounce more in the later games of the series. Some YouTubers have gone as far to compare the boob physics between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Soul Calibur IV. Once people start focusing on how the boobs jiggle in your game versus actually playing the game… you’ve crossed the line as a developer.
4. Ahri — League of Legends
Ahri is one of the most popular characters in League Of Legends; she also happens to have some of the most-seductive outfits in the game. Is that a coincidence? Probably not. In addition to having a series of saucy outfits, Ahri has some of the most-seductive quotes you’ll find in the game. Some of these quotes include, “Come try your luck if you think you’re in my league (giggles),” “Let’s have some real fun,” and “Should I make your pulse rise? Or… STOP! (giggles)” It’s really not a mystery why she’s so popular among teenage boys. Due to her popularity, Ahri has more skins than almost any other character in League of Legends.
You may not find it surprising that Ahri is a popular character for gamers who consider themselves furries. For the innocent souls reading this article, furries are people who are attracted to animals that look like people, people with tails, and/or animal-human hybrids.
3. Catherine — Catherine
Developed by the same team behind the Persona series, Catherine is a puzzle/adventure game at its core. The game revolves around Vincent Brooks, a fairly average dude faced with supernatural nightmares as he tries to choose between his girlfriend, Katherine, and a beautiful girl named “Catherine,” whom he spends the night with early on in the game. Throughout the game, Catherine continues to try to seduce Vincent. Though she’s a beautiful woman and is playfully seductive, there’s more to Catherine than meets the eye. But man, is she a sight to see!
The cover of the game uses Catherine’s sex appeal to attract the attention of consumers. She’s literally undressing on the cover. The game was rated “Mature” for the content in the game, particularly pretty much every scene involving Catherine. Due to the sexual themes and partial nudity in the game, it was almost not released in Europe. Thankfully, it was because the game was critically acclaimed, universally loved, and has sprouted its own competitive gaming scene. How? I’m not really sure. It’s a single-player game.
2. Chun-Li — Street Fighter
Chun-Li is one of the most iconic characters to come out of the Street Fighter series. Her distinct look was received with praise by reviewers, who were tired of seeing women as characters in skimpy outfits or as damsels in distress. That said, it takes a special talent of designers to create a modestly dressed character that’s also stunning. Taking notes from Soul Calibur, Capcom used boob physics to increase the appeal of their female characters. However, they may have gone too far.
In 2016, a glitch was discovered in Street Fighter 5 when Chun-Li was chosen by Player 2. Her breasts would bounce around uncontrollably, and it appeared that she wasn’t wearing a bra underneath her uniform. She may be one of the only video-game characters of all time that suffered from a nip slip due to the resulting glitch in boob physics. Chun-Li wasn’t the only female character affected, but the glitch was most notable on her because of the size of her chest.
1. Rayne — BloodRayne
It really says something when a video game character is featured in Playboy. That was the case for Rayne in 2004, when Playboy featured her in a nude photo spread. According to a spokesperson for BloodRayne, the photo spread was just a quick bit of fun that the developers were excited to be part of.
Rayne, from the BloodRayne franchise, has transformed from mediocre video-game character to media figure. The games themselves are nothing remarkable, and like any summer action movie, relied on star power to keep the franchise alive. Rayne was that star power. She’s made appearances in music videos and conventions, and her look is often used by models to recreate the hottest video-game characters of all time. People spend more time talking about what Rayne looks like, more than they spend talking about BloodRayne. She came seventh in a list of “greatest a**es,” and her breasts were ranked ninth best in video game history. What an accomplishment.
