15 Unfairly Overpowered Characters In The MCU

With Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity Wars upcoming in the near future, and with the recent release of Thor: Ragnarok recently released, this is a great time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Oh right, the latest season of Agents Of Shield just began on ABC, the first season of The Punisher just came out on Netflix – plus numerous successful properties, Marvel Studio has changed the narrative on how to create a successful film and movie franchise.

Throughout the length of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there have been hundreds of characters introduced – however, there are some who are far stronger than the others. Sorry Hawkeye fans, he’s more suited for Agents of Shield or The Defenders than fighting aliens!

The Marvel Universe expands from the normal to next dimensional and the MCU has introduced characters from all walks and different power levels.

In fact, there are characters who make Luke Cage look rather weak by comparison. If you are an expert on everything Marvel, this may be a rather good challenge to see if you knew just how powerful some of these characters actually are.

You ready? Check out the list below!

15. Vision

via Marvel

Vision can use the Mind Stone, can fly, control his own density, and is able to make himself almost impossible to damage when he solidifies himself. Vision also has super strength and even made Ultron look like a toy.

Not only is Vision extremely powerful, he is also extremely intelligent. He is one of the most powerful individuals in the MCU, yet he is also one of the most unassuming.

What role will Vision play in the immediate feature? With Thanos looking to collect all the Infinity Stones, there may be a dramatic encounter between the two.

14. Heimdall

via Marvel

While we haven’t seen Heimdall fight too often, he is the all-seeing and all-hearing Guardian of Asgard. He is also the only being of the Nine Worlds who can operate the Rainbow Bridge portal.

Not very many are eager to fight against an extremely powerful warrior like Heimdall. It will be interesting to see what happens with Heimdall in the near future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and if we will have the opportunity to see this powerful warrior play a major role in events.

Would you cross Heimdall? I didn’t think so.

13. Doctor Strange

via Marvel

Doctor Strange has a power level higher that’s only matched by his ego. They don’t call him The Sorcerer Supreme for no reason. Strange can create portals, shields, weapons, fly, can enter different realms, slow time, and can steal energy from the dark realm. He even has a magical cloak…

He may be the only Avenger who can outmatch Scarlet Witch. Scarlet even has the Eye of Agamotto to give him even more ability. Is Strange overpowered? Well, he’s definitely trained extremely hard to have the abilities he does. He can thank The Ancient One for unlocking his mind.

However, Strange has yet to learn the ancient skill of humility. Could that cost him in the end? Could you imagine he and Tony Stark doing a podcast together, talk about Super Hero Egos!

12. Ultron

via YouTube

You can blame Tony Stark for this one. Ultron is intelligent, relentless, and unbelievably strong. He also serves a lesson for what could go wrong with Artificial Intelligence, especially if that AI can upgrade itself and create other artificial lifeforms.

While Ultron has numerous different powers and abilities, he is actually not even the most powerful on this list, but he definitely gave the Avengers a lot of problems. It’s quite difficult to defeat an artificial life-form with a transferable consciousness and the desire to destroy everything on Earth.

Give it to the Avengers, they were able to take Ultron out without destroying the entire planet. However, they did billions of dollars worth of damage – leading to several cultural problems in the process.

11. Ronan The Accuser

via Marvel

Ronan may have been slightly comical in Guardians of the Galaxy, but he was a rather well-developed villain. Ronan the Accuser was a member of the Kree and attempts to work for the betterment of his people. While Ronan was slightly watered down due to the nature of the first Guardians film – he definitely presented an interesting alternative.

He may be on the lower side of the power scale among the others listed, but at least he stuck by his convictions even if it didn’t get him too far.

He did have a cool space hammer though. Maybe if he wasn’t so grumpy he would still be flying through space and imposing his will on those who can’t defend themselves.

10. Dormammu

via YouTube

While Dormammu was eventually ‘defeated’ by Doctor Strange – who used a rather intelligent tactic to trap the mystical ruler of the Dark Dimension. Basically, Dormammu is an altered sense of reality, making him unbeatable by those without some sort of plane altering powers like Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange.

Time does not exist for Dormammu who likes to collect planets, his power is comparable to that of the Celestials. There really isn’t a measure of how strong Dormammu actually is. Yet, we do know that he can be outsmarted by those with rather large egos.

We could say Dormammu show up again in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the near future. When have villains ever kept their word?

9. Thanos

via YouTube

Long live Thanos, champion of Earth! Oh wait…he hasn’t defeated the Avengers yet? Oh…Well then…Moving on!

We really don’t know the actual strength of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Then why is he on this list? Well, Thanos is collecting the Infinity Stones and has the Infinity Gauntlet in his possession.

When Thanos is able to complete his collecting mission, he will definitely be one of the most powerful forces in the known universe. Marvel has been building up to that moment for the past decade and when Thanos gains power he will be a major force to be reckoned with.

Will he kill several Avengers? How will he be stopped? I definitely can’t wait to find out!

8. Hulk

via BBC

When Bruce Banner gets a little angry he has the ability to completely level a city the size of Los Angeles. While the Hulk definitely has his limitations, there is no doubting his ability to leave a wake of destruction in his path.

Those with the ability to alter reality (Doctor Strange), match his strength (Thor…maybe-ish..as we have seen) or can alter the mind (Scarlet Witch) his threat level greatly diminishes. However, there just aren’t too many of those individuals walking around in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

We do know he has feelings for Black Widow. Perhaps that might be Hulk’s greatness weakness of all. Or is that his greatest strength?! We’ll see soon.

7. Thor

via Marvel

I mean Thor is a god, has a magical hammer, super strength, and has defended Asgard from all types of beings from differing dimensions. Thor brings brute force at an extreme level, yet it’s not impossible to see how he could be defeated by those with mystical powers.

If we’ve learned one thing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe – it’s that brute force can only take you so far. Therefore, while Thor is extremely powerful, he isn’t the most overpowered member of the MCU. There are definitely limitations to his offensive game!

Do Thor’s humor and quick wit count for him being overpowered? They should!

6. Ego

via Marvel

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe is presented as a Celestial and was the antagonist in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Ego spent thousands of years developing his own planet, has a beard, and spent the better part of the past thousand years creating a plan to destroy a number of planets.

Ego was extremely powerful and was among one of the most powerful beings of the universe. While his demise wasn’t the most satisfying conclusion, but it does show that the vaunted Celestials can be defeated.

Could we see other Celestials pop up and see their demise in the MCU?

5. Scarlet Witch

via YouTube

Scarlet Witch is one powerful woman who has yet to learn how to control the depth of her powers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even the directors of Captain America: Civil War stated that she is the most power Avenger – practically making her the greatest champion of humanity.

She has made Vision look silly. Scarlet has shown telekinetic abilities, can create force fields, throw her opponents, and it’s rumored that she can alter reality.

Scarlet Witch may only have one person who can compete with her abilities and that is Doctor Strange. Could you imagine a battle between those two? It could literally take place through space and time.

4. The Ancient One

via Marvel

It cannot be stated just how powerful The Ancient One was. She is literally responsible for the development of Doctor Strange, who is nowhere near as powerful as she was before she met her end.

Ancient One is responsible for training so many powerful mystics that protect Earth, there are only few who could actually match her powers. It’s unfortunate that she had to meet her end in order to make up for the sins of her past.

There’s reason to believe that not even Doctor Strange could defeat her in a battle, she was really that powerful. It’s not impossible that she may return, this is the same Marvel Cinematic Universe filled with magic and resurrections.

Bring her back!

3. Odin

via Marvel

Odin, ruler of the Norse Gods, son of Bor, and father of Thor has the ability to fly and blast electricity at his will. He has possession of the Gungnir the Almighty Spear and has superhuman strength to go along with super speed.

While we haven’t seen the extent of his powers, it’s believed that in his younger years Odin could compete with the strongest beings in the universe.

Is that true? Well, we may never know, but it’s unlikely that many will test the powers of Odin. It’s not impossible that he plays a meaningful role in the future, he did just lose his wife recently.

2. Celestials

Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we have heard about Celestials, yet we have rarely seen them. In the first Guardians movie we did see Eson the Searcher, who at one time held the Power Stone – but not too much else aside from that.

However, the Celestials are some of the most powerful beings in the MCU and are extremely powerful. It would probably take several teams of Avengers in order to take out the most powerful Celestials.

It’s likely that we will see these massive beings play an even larger role at some point in the MCU. Most of the Celestials make Ego look like a mid-level entity. Yes, the upper-level Celestials like Eson  the Searcher are that powerful.

1. Loki

via Marvel

Oh, Loki.

What can you really say about this guy? He’s a god and is far more powerful than most of the other characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While he may not be the best fighter, Loki knows how to manipulate and do so many other things that make him a dangerous opponent.

If we’re considering intelligence is considered a power, then Loki is definitely overpowered. It’s definitely difficult to trust Loki and know what exactly his motivations are.

However, he is one of the most developed characters in the entirety of the Marvel franchise.
