Everyone just assumes being an actress is all first-class flights and bubbly drinks. But believe me when I say it’s not always easy. These women are forced into compromising positions and must work hours without sleep. This encourages them to take drugs to stay awake. If that isn’t enough, they are on dangerous diets that will hardly let them stand without passing out, all so they can fit the role the directors want them to fit. But it’s not all messing with one’s body. Oftentimes, horror movie stars are truly scarred after the roles they are forced to fill. Just imagine Michael Myers haunting your every dream because you saw him up close and in person.
These are the things that actresses have to go through on a regular basis. Not only do they get intimate in real life, but they also have to go through it on screen, too. There isn’t much about their life that is easy. They often make good money, but money does not by happiness, as you can see from the addictions and depression we see so often in Hollywood. If you’re aching to hear about the specific movie scenes that drove these girls mad with humiliation and embarrassment, just take a look at the fifteen actresses who were traumatized by their movies.
15. Dakota Johnson Being Tied Up And Blindfolded In Fifty Shades Of Grey
Everyone knows that Dakota Johnson stars in Fifty Shades of Grey. Everyone knows that Dakota Johnson wasn’t quite comfortable playing this role, but do you really know how bad it was? “We’re not having actual s*x,” she told Interview magazine during the filming. “But I’ve been simulating [it] for seven hours straight right now and I’m over it. It’s not…comfortable. It’s pretty tedious.” She claims that she thinks acting in the buff done tastefully in movies is beautiful. But there were some scenes she felt uncomfortable with. One of the worst ones was when she was tied up and blindfolded by Christian. She said that she couldn’t see anything and that it was really scary. She knew she had to do it, but it must have been deeply upsetting Thankfully, James was very considerate and tried his best to make her as comfortable as possible.
14. Vanessa Hudgens’ Scandalous Scene In Spring Breakers
In Spring Breakers, Vanessa Hudgens’s character had no lines she wouldn’t cross. She was incredibly wild and got into character really well. Before the film, Vanessa promised herself that she would not expose herself on screen. She did not want to participate in any scandalous or revealing scenes. She admitted that she was not the partying type and never took part in spring break.
Not to mention, she especially was wary of James Franco, who refused to break character (a rather nasty and intense character) even when not filming. When asked about the scandalous scenes in the movie, she says, “’It was very nerve-racking for me. I told my agent that I never want to do it ever again.” She swears she’s never doing any love scene again, as she despised it! We’ll see if that holds up; so far she’s doing pretty well.
13. Nicole Kidman Getting Hurt And Humiliated In Big Little Lies
We all know that Nicole Kidman has suffered abuse in the past, which likely made Big Little Lies that much more traumatizing for her. From her own mouth she said, “Doing it for five months… it penetrated my psyche in really strange ways. That’s what we do as actors. We’re meant to do things that disturb us sometimes.”
She also said that she often felt “vulnerable, exposed, and humiliated,” calling domestic violence an “insidious disease.” At one point she claims that during the movie she was just lying on the bathroom floor with torn underwear, weeping, when the director came and threw a towel over her. It was a new low for her but she said she learned a lot about domestic violence and s*xual abuse through it, and has come to be an advocate to fight against it. If only she didn’t get traumatized in the process.
12. Maria Schneider Being Horribly Assaulted (For Real) In Last Tango In Paris
Maria Scheider, the famous 1970s star, was deeply traumatized due to her 1972 film Last Tango in Paris. At the time, she was just 19 and Marlon Brando, her co-star, was nearly 50. In the film, Brando’s character loses his wife to suic*de and soon becomes obsessed with the young girl. The two have a purely physical relationship without even learning each other’s name.
Later on it came out that in one scene that was cut from many showings, butter was used in a way it should not be used in what was a “r*pe” scene. These kinds of scenes are not uncommon in movies, but this one was traumatizing for one serious reason. Brando and the director didn’t tell Maria what was going to happen because they wanted her reactions to be real. She said later that it felt like real assault, even though she knew it was fake. She was too young to know to call her agent and ask him about the unscripted scene. So she simply suffered in silence, never the person she was before the movie.
11. Mila Kunis Starving Herself In Black Swan
Mila Kunis starred in the critically-acclaimed movie Black Swan in 2010. It took her a few years to speak about it clearly, but she admits that she was on the harshest diet of her life. Not only did she train for three months straight so she could actually perform ballet, but she smoked like nobody’s business to get herself down to 95 lbs.
Aside from that, she admits the love scenes were very uncomfortable. She claims, “…we weren’t looking forward to it. I don’t think we were laughing between takes. I think we were like, ‘Let’s just get this over with.’ It’s uncomfortable doing a [love] scene. It’s just bizarre. Luckily, we were friends, so we were able to get through it.” Mila said that it was all the director. They just did what he told them to do. She said it was actually harder to do it since her and Portman were friends because it could make their friendship awkward. But like she said, they got through it together. However, Portman may have something different to say.
10. Anne Hathaway’s Insane Weight Loss And Emotional Pain In Les Misérables
Anne Hathaway had many traumatizing moments and events that occurred during the filming of Les Misérables. The first one was her diet prior to the movie. She actually refused to tell what she ate or what she did because it was that bad. She had to portray a dying, diseased prost*tute, after all. She said she literally felt like she was dying because of the diet. She said that she cried when her character shaved her head as well. But those physical pains weren’t the worst.
It was the plot that was too much for her, which showed when she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Critics questioned why she acted so weird and she explained, “It felt wrong that I was standing there in a gown that cost more than some people are going to see in their lifetime and winning an award for portraying pain that still felt very much a part of our collective experience as human beings.”
9. Marilyn Burns Was Actually Tormented In Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The first Texas Chainsaw movie was one for the books. The incredible Marilyn Burns was tormented by Jason in the movie. When talking about the making of the film, producers said that Burns suffered many injuries, as she was, “poked, prodded, bound, dragged through rooms, jerked around, chased through cocklebur underbrush, jabbed with a stick, forced to skid on her knees in take after take, and pounded on the head with a rubber hammer.” Wow.
But all of this was nothing compared to her fright. There were small things like the fact that the skeletons used were real, that the blood dripping from her face was left from a real injury. Then there were the bigger things, like the fact that she hadn’t seen Jason until they were actually filming. So, her screams were very real when she saw Leatherface right there in front of her.
8. Kyle Richards Forever Traumatized After Halloween
Kyle Richards was far too young and naïve to be starring is a horror movie. When she was filming it, she really didn’t know what was going on. It was watching it afterwards that really got her. We know this because she has said, “Seeing it for the first time all pieced together was a very, very different movie. It was just really scary. And I really did sleep with my mom until I was 15 years old after that. I was terrified.”
For this reason, Kyle has sworn of horror films and refuses to watch them. The poor girl was just too young to watch herself be that close to a serial killer: “I think that’s what sealed the deal for me to get out of horror films. After seeing myself in that, I was always thinking there was someone hiding behind the drapes or outside my windows or under my bed.” This movie might have been successful for her, but what did it cost?
7. Selena Gomez Struggled While Filming Spring Breakers
For the first twenty years of her life, Selena Gomez starred in kids shows like Barney & Friends and Wizards of Waverly Place. She had never been exposed to anything that was above a PG rating and she’d certainly never starred in such a scandalous movie, until 2012, when she got the role of Faith in a movie called Spring Breakers. The movie follows college girls who go on spring break and end up mixed up with a twisted drug and arms dealer who acts as a sort of pimp for Faith and her friends.
The movie was not something that Selena was expecting, but it launched her career in non-kid movies. The whole thing was new for her and she admits that it was not easy. She warned her young fans to not watch it multiple times. Thankfully, she keeps her bikini on the entire movie and is never seen doing anything except smoking marijuana. This can’t be said for her co-star, Vanessa.
6. Sandra Peabody Was Essentially Tortured In The Last House On The Left
The Last House on the Left was a sleazy 1970s film based on murder and s*xual assault. In the film, Sandra Peabody’s character is tortured and r*ped throughout an entire night. To get an idea of how bad the movie was, remember what one of the stars shared about the experience. One of the actors, Fred Lincoln was an adult film star in real life. He says it was so graphic and messed up that he wishes it would have been banned in the US.
That alone would traumatize any young actress. But it gets worse. The entire crew stayed in character when they weren’t filming just so they could scare Sandra in order for her to stay in character. They claimed that she was scared to death of them and that they practically tortured her the entire time. Whenever the cast had reunions or interviews, she was always mysteriously absent, even decades later.
5. Tippi Hedron Was Physically Assaulted In The Birds
Tippi Hedron was amazing in The Birds. She embodied beauty, grace, and talent. But ask anyone and they will tell you that director Alfred Hitchcock was anything but kind. Tippi would not go into details on how he assaulted her but she said she felt violated and that he said that if she didn’t let him do what he was doing, he would ruin her career. She put a stop to it, regardless. But what happened during the film, she couldn’t stop.
She claimed that for the big bedroom scene, Hitchcock promised he would use mechanical birds but on the day they started shooting, she was informed that, “the mechanical birds aren’t working, so we’re going to have to use live ones.” She said for five days, people threw ravens, doves and pigeons at her. Even passersby such as Cary Grant saw how awful it was. He told her, ‘You’re the bravest woman I’ve ever seen.’”
It got worse on the last day when birds were tied to her clothes as they pecked her and more were thrown at her. She was forced to rest soon enough by the doctor, despite Hitchcock’s arguing against it. But afraid of a lawsuit, he finally had no choice.
4. Natalie Portman Nearly Lost Her Life In Black Swan
While both Mila and Natalie Portman were uncomfortable and had harsh diets, it’s easy to say that Natalie Portman (who played a mentally unstable character) had it harder. For one, Mila Kunis was more comfortable with love scenes in general. As for the diet, she lost twenty pounds far too quickly. Portman said, “There were some nights that I thought I literally was going to die. It was the first time I understood how you could get so wrapped up in a role that it could sort of take you down.” That is terrifying.
On top of that, she was injured numerous times, one that included a six-week stay at the hospital after twisting a rib. Oh yes, and she suffered a concussion. Perhaps that was even worse than the awkward love scene with her friend Mila. She says she doesn’t have a problem with love scenes in general, but it was her first girl-on-girl action and she’s very opposed to adult films. She believes this type of scene just gives those sites something to work with.
3. Janet Leigh Can’t Take A Shower Ever Again Thanks To Psycho
Anyone who watched Psycho got a little messed up. But if you think it was bad for you, imagine being the leading lady Janet Leigh. Whenever you think of the 1960 movie, one thing comes to mind: that shower scene. Back in 1960, the gore, violence, frightening music, and level of physical exposure was unheard of, so this was rather shocking.
Janet herself was horrified, saying, “I believed that knife went into me. It was that real, that horrifying. I could feel it!” But the truth was… she had a body double. No one knew until decades later. But why lie? The rumor is that Hitchcock threatened her to not let anyone know because authenticity was everything to him. His image was of the utmost importance.
But still, Janet suffered, saying, “I stopped taking showers and I take baths, only baths. I make sure the doors and windows of the house are locked and I leave the bathroom door open and shower curtain open. I’m always facing the door, watching, no matter where the shower head is.”
2. Shailene Woodley Getting Intimate For The First Time In The Spectacular Now
When The Spectacular Now came out, despite becoming famous for playing a pregnant teen, Shailene Woodley never actually got intimate before. As a result, having on-screen s*x before doing the deed in real life was quite odd for her. When speaking of the scene, she says, “It was both of our first times having an onscreen [love] scene. It was such a safe, comfortable environment and I am so grateful that it was with Miles.”
But then again, she also said that since she hadn’t done anything in real life, doing it on screen kind of felt like she was doing it off screen too. It doesn’t seem like she regrets it and she has now played a virgin on at least five occasions. By now, it’s really become what she does. However, that first time was anything but easy. At least the directors took it pretty easy on them, as they were teens.
1. Linda Blair Facing Religious Questions In The Exorcist
When The Exorcist was filmed, Linda Blair was only twelve years old, which is the perfect age to get spooked quite easily. She says that The Exorcist is different to her because she can’t be afraid of herself exactly. So for her, it was something different. She was bombarded by fans and the paparazzi as a young teen. But unlike most who wanted to ask more shallow questions, some people asked Linda deep questions about God, possessions, the devil, and more. These are questions that no young teen could answer.
As an adult, she spoke out saying that she was Protestant, not Catholic, so she never really thought about possession and the likes. So when people started asking her questions or acting strange around her, it made her feel like a bad omen and she felt like an ignorant girl who didn’t know what she should. She also worried that other Protestants hated her for being in such an awful movie. She claims she was just an actor playing a part, and on her end, everything was just special effects.
