15 Times Stupid People Did Stupid Things For Fame

I think at one point or another we all wonder what it would be like to be famous, to live a life of luxury and have everybody know your name. Getting into the entertainment industry is a long shot for anyone. Even individuals with incredible talent may never have the chance to let their light shine on the silver screen or at sold-out concert arenas. That’s just the way it is.

Fortunately for all of you out there who still have that dream of becoming a celebrity, it’s not as hard as it used to be. You don’t have to be the next Johnny Depp or Adele to gain notoriety. You might not win a Grammy or an Oscar but you can definitely make some money and land your face on the cover of gossip mags. Who knows all about that? The people on this list of course. Their claims to fame may have been extremely unconventional, but clearly they worked or we wouldn’t be talking about them. Yes we might think they’re stupid, outrageous and shocking, but, the sad truth is a lot of them are making more money than most could ever dream of. It’s not everyday that getting pregnant, being bisexual or lying to the entire world can get you noticed. But, if you do it in the right way, apparently there’s a chance!

15 Whenever These People Risk Their Lives For The Perfect Shot

This is 23-year-old Viki Odintcova, the Russian Playboy model who dangled off of Dubai's 1000-foot tall Cayan Tower. She did so with no harness, no safety net and only a man's hand keeping her from falling to her death. The model agreed to the death-defying stunt in the name of publicity and Instagram hits. Well, it worked. The images and videos of Odintcvova hanging 73 storeys above the ground were shown on news outlets all over the world. The footage was viewed over 2 million times on Youtube, and received half a million likes on Instagram.

This isn’t the first time Odintcova has participated in daredevil stunts. She’s also jumped from a bridge in Sochi and swam with sharks. However, when her poor parents saw the footage of Cayan Tower, they made her promise never to do anything so stupid ever again. She agreed, and after finding herself in a bit of hot water from Dubai authorities, she publicly warned fans never to attempt such stunts.

14 When She Faked Having Cancer

Cancer affects almost everyone in their lifetime in one way or another. It’s devastating, awful and something most people try to avoid being diagnosed with at all costs. And then we have people like Belle Gibson, the woman who faked having terminal brain cancer for her own gain.

Gibson is the author of The Whole Pantry smartphone app and cookbook. She claimed to know natural cancer treatments through whole foods and vitamins. She also claimed that it was her own devastating experience with cancer that lead her to these discoveries. Unfortunately, her accomplishments as an app developer and author were ripped away from her when it was revealed she faked having cancer to use it as a platform. Investigations revealed Gibson was living the dream, renting luxury townhouses, cars and office spaces, getting cosmetic dental work and showering herself in designer clothing. She’s now been labeled as a scammer and been slapped with hefty fines for her deceit.

13 When He Embarrassed Himself On National Television

If you’re not a good singer, you can go the polar opposite route and be a terrible singer to gain fame, apparently. Isn’t watching people embarrass themselves half the fun of watching shows like American Idol? Who would know more about that than third season contestant, William Hung.

Hung sang an awful, off-key version of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs” in front of the judging panel. The nice judges, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul tried their best to restrain their laughter. Meanwhile, Simon Cowell rudely dismissed his performance. While his dreams of becoming the next American Idol were crushed, he did rapidly gain a cult following. Hung appeared on late night television and talk shows. He was even offered a $25.00 record deal and released three albums. Hung has also appeared in television shows and movies. I guess miracles do happen.

12 When She Faked Her Race

Rachel Dolezal was born in Montanna to two very caucasian parents. However, that didn't stop her from becoming an activist for black people and an Africana studies instructor. There’s nothing wrong with that, except that during the time of her activism she posed as an African American. For years she had been disguising herself as black and making allegations of discrimination and hate crimes against her. Her parents eventually outed her and she ended up all over the news, on daytime TV and on the cover of her own memoir.

Dolezal who has now changed her name to Nkechi Amare Diallo, admits that while she was born biologically white, she identifies as black. She applies bronzers to maintain her look and wears her hair in dreadlocks and weaves.

11 When They Exploit Their Children

It’s pretty common to see innocent young kids on reality TV shows these days; whether they’re part of a 19-child family, a set of sextuplets, transgendered, little people, conjoined twins or a chunky pageant queen. Television network TLC seems to have a reality show for just about anything and that makes unique families in America open for business.

Young kids appearing on reality television has always been controversial. They didn’t choose that path, their parents did. They don’t get paid, their parents do. Can it be considered exploitation? Probably. One specific case of this comes with television show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. Matriarch “Mama June” made her kids famous when she decided to put her lower-class, hillbilly, burping, farting family on television. They made their money, moved into a nice big house and Mama June had surgery to lose 150 pounds which they also made into a TV show. Meanwhile, her innocent children were ridiculed by the media and chased down by the paparazzi.

10 When They Commit Murder

Why do we know names like Jodi Arias, Jeffery Dahmer, Karla Homolka and Charles Manson? They’re not singers, not actors, they’re murderers. They’ve been on the news, done high-profile interviews and been the topics of documentaries and docu-series. The worst part about making evil people famous? It starts to become a way for people to seek the limelight.

Dennis Radar was the perfect family man, a churchgoer and a Cub Scout leader. However, behind that image was a terrible secret, he’d butchered 10 people between the years of 1974-1991. He was addicted to the rush of killing and becoming famous. He sent anonymous poems to local papers about the murders trying to spread fear. He requested to be known by everyone as the “BTK" killer, BTK meaning bind, torture, kill. In letters written to the papers he compared himself to notorious serial killer Ted Bundy, he sent photos of his victims and even a word puzzle outline. Radar was eventually caught in 2004, and now everyone knows him by his real name, just they way he probably wanted it.

9 When They Make Sex Tapes And They Get "Leaked"

People exploiting their bodies for fame doesn’t seem that far fetched. Fit and sexy men and women showing off their stuff for the pages of magazines and online posts. But, would you consider going a step further to get your name out there? Take it from Kim Kardashian, sometimes it works.

Kim K. wasn’t a total nobody back in 2006, she was a stylist for socialite Paris Hilton, often being spotted out in L.A. with her by paparazzi. She went from “not a total nobody” to somebody in 2007 when a sex tape of her and singer, Ray J. was leaked. From that point the ball started rolling, Kardashian got her family a reality gig Keeping Up With The Kardashians which shot the entire family to fame and fortune. Other notable celebrities with sex tapes include Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson and Farrah Abraham. As they say, sex sells.

8 When She Became The Laughingstock Of Daytime Talkshow

If you have some sort of deep dark secret or family issues you need to air out, that would probably be done best with a counsellor. Unless of course, you’re looking for 15 minutes of fame, at which point you can take your problems straight to daytime talk shows.

A prime example of talkshow guests finding “fame” is 13-year-old Danielle Bregoli, or the “Cash Me Outsside” girl from Dr. Phil. Bregoli’s mom brought her onto the show in hopes that Dr. Phil could save her from her wild ways of cussing, car-stealing, knife-wielding and twerking. Young Bregoli spent her time on stage calling the audience hoes and threatening them to “cash” her “ousside”. If you don’t know what that means, it’s ok, neither did the other millions of viewers. Memes began surfacing all over the web, Bregoli became the laughingstock of daytime TV. Since the show she’s been making five figure sums for public appearances and doing product ads for Instagram where she has 8.3 million followers. She could potentially be a millionaire by the end of this year.

7 When They Decide To Alter Their Body

Do you recognize this busty woman? If you do, don’t be surprised. Her name is Lacey Wildd and she’s been featured on television shows such as Botched, My Strange Addiction, Double Divas, ABC News, Dr. Drew, 20/20 and True Life. She’s earned a living showing off her extreme body modifications. She’s had 36 plastic surgeries including butt enlargements, eye-widening, rhinoplasty and most notably, breast enlargements all the way up to a Q-cup.

The 46-year-old mother of six is not only addicted to plastic surgery, she’s also addicted to the attention gained from it. She’s been featured in two movies and seven television shows due to her over-the-top appearance. Her most recent endeavours? She’s become a psychic who goes by the name of “Ghostbusty”. She claims the universe lead her to inflate her breasts in order to gain fame and have a platform to help people spiritually.

6 When They Get Pregnant With The "Right" Person

Bringing another human being into the world is a massive decision for anyone. Are you ready to be a parent? Will you be a good parent? Are you stable? Do you have a good talent manager? Ok, so maybe that last question doesn’t cross the mind of most future parents. However, for someone like Angela White AKA Blac Chyna, that may have been a very relevant question.

Black Chyna started out as a stripper, then became a model. Her curvy looks landed her music videos and on the pages of magazines. Her career was on the up but Chyna wanted more. In 2016 she began dating the only male of the Kardashian empire, Rob. After 3 months of dating the two became engaged. After 5 months of dating, the two announced they were having a child together, Dream Kardashian. Was the relationship genuine? Was the decision to have a child genuine? Or did Chyna just want her and her child to be a permanent member of the Kardashian empire? The fact that the Kardashian sisters had to legally block Black Chyna from trademarking “Angela Renee Kardashian” for profit probably answers those questions.

5 When They Become A Mistress With The "Right" Person

Hooking up with a married celebrity can also be used as a claim to fame, just ask Monica Lewinsky, Marla Maples or Rachel Uchitel. There’s one thing these male celebs need to understand: if you have an affair, you will get caught, and your mistress will be right there to cash in on the drama.

There are a lot of new “celebrities” today who found their fame through infidelity. Take Rachel Uchitel for instance, she’s known as “the most famous mistress on the planet”. She had an affair with Tiger Woods in 2010. After the affair, Uchitel was all over news and entertainment shows and even made a television appearance on Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew for which she was reportedly paid $500,000. Tiger on the other hand? Forever branded as a scumbag.

4 When They Hijack A Newscast

FHRITP Guy, also known as Fred is that hooded, sunglassed newscast hijacker you’ve probably seen on YouTube once or twice. He’s known for interrupting live newscasts, grabbing the mic from reporters and yelling “f**k her right in the p***y!”

The sensation first began in January 2014 when Fred responded to a reporter who asked about a missing 20-year-old woman, he of course said he would FHRITP if she was ever found. Fred struck again in February 2014 and then his third appearance was during an oil spill. When the reporter asked what he had seen he responded "I was sitting on my front porch, grabbed a beer, and FHRITP!”. Videos of Fred went viral, FHRITP has its own website selling images of him on T-shirts. He’s got celebrity fans too, stars like Cheech & Chong, Katy Perry, Tosh.0 and many more shared the videos on their Facebook page.

3 When They Subject Themselves To Physical Pain

The cast of MTV’s Jackass mainly consisted of failed actors. Acting wasn’t really their thing, but apparently being idiots on camera was. That’s how Jackass was born, a television show about a group of young men performing dangerous, crude and painful stunts and pranks. Following the success of the television show, three films were released. Jackass spinoffs like Viva La Bam, Wild Boyz, Homewrecker, Dr. Steve-O and Nitro Circus also became popular.

Jackass’ main cast completely shot to fame. Johnny Knoxville got another shot in the acting industry and did somewhat well. Other cast members like Bam Margera and Steve-O remain on the radar with television shows and public appearances. Who would have thought, getting run over by a bull or letting a crocodile bite your nipple could turn you into a millionaire.

2 When They Exploit Their Sexual Orientation

Ever seen two women make out at a bar for attention? Well, apparently celebrities take their own spin on that sometimes. Celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Lindsay Lohan have dabbled into lesbianism, hooking up with other women for months at a time, stirring up the paparazzi and creating a frenzy. One notable celeb who’s been known to swing all sorts of ways is Tila Tequila.

Tila Tequila was discovered on Myspace, she was offered a dating show by MTV, A Shot At Love With Tila Tequila. The TV show was different and dynamic because it was a bisexual dating show. The leading lady was hot and watching her hook up with both men and women on TV was even hotter. Following the show, she dated the man she chose as the winner. They later broke up. It was then that she came out as lesbian and dated a few heiresses. After that she decided she was straight and dated a man who she now has a child with. No one cares what your sexual orientation is Tila, but when you use it to gain fame and attention, you land yourself on this list.

1 When They Attempt Ridiculous Records

The Guinness Book of World Records is full of extraordinary human feats. For instance, a man who did 2,200 pushups in one hour. Or, a woman who ran the London Marathon in 2 hours and 15 minutes. Now, those are pretty impressive records and their setters totally deserve some recognition. However, there are some records in the book that are just plain weird. They’re weird and attainable enough for any Joe Shmoe to set and get their 15-minutes of fame.

Some of the most bizarre Guinness Book of World Records include most toilet seats broken by the head in one minute, heaviest weight lifted by one eye socket and loudest purr by a domestic cat. Pictured above is Hungary’s Attila Banyai who was run over five times by a Jeep, which apparently set the world record. His parents must be so proud.
