When it comes to celebrities, image is absolutely everything. The most beautiful, handsome and sexy celebs are the ones that usually get all of the attention. Many celebs often turn to photoshop to help, using the tool to retouch and airbrush their photos to perfection, whether it’s for an ad campaign, magazine cover, or even their own social media. Sometimes, however, photoshop fails — chunks of bodies go missing, arms are mysteriously misplaced, and sometimes the photo is retouched so much that celebrities don’t even look like themselves.
Although many celebrities rely on photoshop to make themselves look good, there are a handful of celebrities who are heavily against it. They advocate for their natural flaws and bodies, and that they should be celebrated, not covered up. They go into a photoshoot thinking they look like themselves, flaws and all, but then when it comes to the final product, they’re not happy with the changes that were made at all. They take to social media, posting the real and fake photos side-by-side, expressing their outrage for the retouching, and call out the publications and photographers that allowed it to happen. Others try to make it a learning experience, still expressing outrage for what was done to their photos, but also turning it into a lesson that photoshop isn’t always the way to go, and we should embrace our bodies for what they are. These are 15 times retouched photos were exposed and celebs went absolutely nuts.
15. Meghan Trainor
We all know that Meghan Trainor is “All About That Bass,” as she sings so in her hit song. The track is all about body positivity, and embracing your curves. She even sings about Photoshop in the song, and how we know that edited photos are not real. In May of 2016, Trainor released a music video for her single “Me Too.” Once the video was released, fans noticed that something wasn’t right, and Trainor looked different. They began to post online that Trainor was heavily edited to look smaller.
Extremely upset, Trainor took to social media to set the record straight. She immediately had the video taken down and the unedited version posted not too long after. Trainor then posted a side-by-side of the edited and unedited video on Instagram, to show how much her body was retouched. She said, “The real #metoo video is finally up! Missed that bass. Thank you everyone for the support!” One thing’s for sure, Trainor is still all about that bass!
14. Keira Knightley
Keira Knightley has appeared in some of our favorite movies including the Pirates of the Caribbean series, and Pride and Prejudice. Knightley is known for her beautiful looks and her thin, petite frame. She might not be the curviest of actresses, and that certainly doesn’t bother her. There have been many times that Knightley was photoshopped to appear more endowed than she actually is, appearing much larger in her breasts. One of the most shocking altered photos of Knightley is in the movie poster for King Arthur. As you can see in the before and after photo, her chest was retouched heavily.
Tired of this happening to her time and time again, she posed for a photoshoot and the photos that were published were not retouched at all. She has called out the process of retouching and manipulating photos and her photoshoot was to prove that she loves the body she has, and retouching isn’t needed.
13. Kate Winslet
In 2003, Kate Winslet appeared on the cover of GQ and was shocked to see how different she looked. Winslet has spoken out time and time again about photoshop and how she is so against it. She doesn’t believe in altering images, and is especially against her own being retouched. Winslet revealed that she’s seen the unedited photos and believes that her legs were reduced by a third. We don’t have to see the before photos to prove that Winslet is right — in fact, looking at any photo of her beside the cover you can honestly see the difference between them. She called out the magazine for editing her so heavily, obviously angered by it. Winslet is also against cosmetic surgery, and has stated so many times. She’s an advocate for the natural body, therefore, it was only natural for her to absolutely freak out about the cover.
12. Britney Spears
Britney Spears has been known as a sex symbol from the day she stepped into the music industry with her hit “Baby One More Time.” In 2010, the singer was featured as a model for the brand Candie’s. After seeing the photos side-by-side, Spears insisted that she wanted both sets of photos published for the ad, to show that everyone has their flaws and nobody is perfect, even Britney Spears. She also aimed to show people just how much airbrushing and retouching goes into these photos. They touched almost every part of Spears from making her legs longer, to lifting up her behind, and airbrushing every imperfection on her. Spears took a bad situation and turned it into an excellent example for all of her fans that look up to her, and most importantly, taking a stand on a huge issue that still goes on in Hollywood today.
11. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga often speaks her mind on issues that are important to her. Body image is definitely one of them. In 2013, Lady Gaga appeared on the cover of Glamour magazine and was absolutely appalled when she saw the final result. She said that the magazine photoshopped her so much that it didn’t even look like her. Gaga said that it was not her, and she didn’t look like that on a daily basis.
She was then honored at the Glamour Woman of the Year Awards, where she called out the magazine in front of everyone while making her speech. She said, “I felt my skin looked too perfect. I felt my hair looked too soft. I do not look like this when I wake up in the morning. I don’t even look like this,” in reference to her cover. Gaga took a stand against retouching and did so right in front of the people that did it.
10. Emily Ratajkowski
Actress Emily Ratajkowski was featured on the cover of French magazine Madame Figaro. After seeing the cover she soon realized that her breasts and lips were altered to appear smaller. When it comes to photoshopping, oftentimes these things are altered to appear bigger, not smaller. Regardless, Ratajkowski was still angered that anything was altered at all.
Ratajkowski took to Instagram to call out the magazine, posting the image for her fans to see with a caption stating, “Everyone is uniquely beautiful in their own ways. We all have insecurities about the things that make us different from a typical ideal of beauty. I, like so many of us, try every day to work past those insecurities. I was extremely disappointed to see my lips and breasts altered in photoshop on this cover. I hope the fashion industry will finally learn to stop trying to stifle the things that make us unique and instead begin to celebrate individuality.”
Beyoncé is not only known for her amazing voice, but she’s also known for her “Bootylicious” body. She’s known to be curvy and she embraces it, and encourages others to do so. In 2013 the singer became the face of popular clothing store H&M, and was set to model their new beachwear collection for the summer. She soon learned that the company altered and airbrushed her well-known curves in all of the photos, leaving her with a silhouette that was not her at all. The singer was not happy about the changes, and demanded that the company published the images without any altering at all.
Beyoncé is a celeb that’s known for taking a stand in what she believes in, even if that means single-handedly taking down a company’s ad campaign to do so. Guess that’s what happens when you’re Queen B!
8. Jennifer Lawrence
Actress Jennifer Lawrence has a goofy and eccentric personality that we’ve all come to know and love over the years that she rose to fame. We know not to take her seriously when it comes to most things. So, when she announced that she was going to be the new face of Dior’s campaign, fans were excited, to say the least. However, when the pictures came out, fans were taken aback over how different the actress looked in the campaign.
Lawrence is no stranger to being altered in her photos, in fact there’s evidence of it for a number of photoshoots. However, she was even surprised when she saw the Dior campaign. She told Access Hollywood, “That doesn’t look like me at all. Of course it’s Photoshop, people don’t look like that.” When an image is altered so much that even the person doesn’t recognize themselves, then it becomes a problem. Lawrence had every right to freak out over the photos.
7. Ronda Rousey
Ronda Rousey is one tough cookie, and can easily kick anyone’s you know what. Rousey appeared on a talk show, and posted a picture of her in the interview chair on her Instagram. Fans were quick to notice that something was off about the photo, and quickly flooded Rousey’s social media. She quickly deleted the photo once she noticed that her arms had been retouched to appear thinner.
She then took to Instagram, posting the altered and unaltered photos side by side and stated, “I have to make an apology to everyone – I was sent a picture from my team to share on social for Fallon that was altered without me knowing to make my arms look smaller. I won’t say by who – I know it was done with severely misplaced positive intentions – but this goes against everything I believe and I am extremely proud of every inch of my body. And I can assure you all it will never happen again. I could not be more appalled and hope you all forgive me.” We really hope she didn’t knock out the person behind this!
6. Iggy Azalea
Notorious female rapper Iggy Azalea appeared on the cover of Schön! in 2016. Once the photos were released, a fan tweeted Azalea with one of the many photos, saying how much they loved the photos and that Azalea looked really great in them. After seeing the photo that the fan was talking about, she noticed that it was heavily altered. She tweeted the fan back, saying, “love it, but I much prefer the picture before they photoshopped my thighs and hips to seem skinnier.” She also tweeted a side-by-side image of the before and after pictures, clearly showing the difference between the two of them.
Like many other celebs, Azalea is known for her curvy waist and her large behind. It’s quite visible between the two photos that Azalea’s hips and thighs do appear much smaller than normal, giving Azalea every right to call the magazine out for retouching her.
5. Kourtney Kardashian
The Kardashians are notorious photoshop users, having their fair share of mishaps and before and after pictures gone wrong. They never really have been ones to speak out about it, that is until Kourtney Kardashian had the final straw. She had just given birth to her son Mason, and did a photoshoot with Life and Style magazine. A few days later, Ok! magazine tried to be slick and published the same photo, however, they changed the color of Kourtney’s outfit and slimmed her down significantly to appear that she already lost her baby weight.
When you put the two photos side-by-side, the differences are beyond obvious. Kourtney took to twitter to set the record straight to her fans. She said, “They doctored and photoshopped my body to make it look like I have already lost all the weight, which I have not.” The star also stated that she never even did an interview with the magazine.
4. Nicki Minaj
Famed rapper Nicki Minaj is known for not biting her tongue and saying what’s on her mind. Minaj was featured on the cover of ESPN magazine’s music issue. She immediately had something to say about the way she looked in the photos. The editors had retouched the photos so much in order to make her appear slimmer, that her forehead had gone from looking normal, to a little elongated.
She took to Instagram to post not one, but two photos from the shoot, showing her larger-than-normal forehead. In one photo she stated, “I love my personal unretouched photos where my forehead doesn’t mysteriously grow in length.” And as for the other picture she said, “When retouching goes wrong.” Yikes. Once you see what Minaj pointed out, it’s hard to unsee it. She made sure to put the magazine on blast, and they’ll be sure never to elongate her forehead again, that’s for sure.
3. Priyanka Chopra
Actress Priyanka Chopra has risen to fame rather quickly over the past few years. In 2016, she appeared on the cover of Maxim. When the cover was published, fans were really quick to take notice that something was very, very off. In the photo it appears that Chopra’s armpit disappeared out of nowhere. Apparently, one of the editors had gotten just a tiny bit photoshop happy and accidentally went a little too hard with the airbrushing, hence its disappearance.
Chopra took the whole situation in stride, even poking fun at herself and the magazine for the mistakes that were made. She tweeted a picture of herself posing in a way that showed off her armpits along with the caption: “Here’s another ‘pit-stopping’ picture to add to the debate. #WillTheRealArmpitPleaseStandUp #nofilter #armpitdiaries.” Although Chopra took a more humorous approach to the situation rather than an angry one, she was still able to bring attention to the photoshop fail.
Lorde is known not only for her amazing voice, but for her eccentric dance moves and strange stage presence. She had recently performed and stumbled across some photos from the concert. Lorde had noticed that her skin had appeared to be heavily airbrushed to appear free of any acne or blemishes. Her face had been airbrushed so much, that it even made her face look weird. Lord is one of the many celebrities who advocates for being your true self, and loving the skin you’re in, blemishes, flaws, and all.
She then decided to turn to Twitter to express her disappointment in the over-edited photos. She tweeted, “I find this curious — two photos from today, one edited so my skin is perfect and one real. Remember flaws are ok :).” Lorde took the situation and turned it into something that everyone could learn from, and that photoshop isn’t always the best, and we should be ourselves.
Zendaya is another celeb that is known for speaking her mind on important issues, and body image is one of them. She was featured in a 2015 issue of Modeliste magazine, where the photo of her was heavily retouched. Very upset about what the magazine had done to her body, she spoke out on social media about the situation. She posted a side-by-side photo, showing the differences between the two. She stated, “Had a new shoot come out today and was shocked when I found my 19 year old hips and torso quite manipulated. These are the things that make women self conscious, that create the unrealistic ideals of beauty that we have. Anyone who knows who I am knows I stand for honest and pure self love. So I took it upon myself to release the real pic (right side) and I love it😍😘 Thank you @modelistemagazine for pulling down the images and fixing this retouch issue.” Keep speaking your mind, Zendaya!
