Jodie Sweetin was once one of America’s favorite little girls. She starred on the hit TV show, Full House as the spunky and lovable middle sister, Stephanie Tanner. Sweetin grew up in front of our eyes as the beloved show aired for eight seasons. Once the show came to an end, she wasn’t sure how to deal with normal, everyday life, and struggled to adjust to life outside of Full House. Unfortunately, that’s when Sweetin began her downward spiral.
Throughout her life she did a lot of things that her on screen TV dad, the overprotective Danny Tanner, would definitely not approve of. She found herself mixing drugs and alcohol, searching for some sort of high and relief from her everyday life. And unfortunately getting involved with the wrong people. She also went through a handful of marriages and divorces, and it seemed as if she could never find her happy ending. Sweetin tried to hide everything for as long as she possibly could from the public eye, but it was no use. It’s been a long road to recovery for Sweetin, and she has fought many demons along the way.
Like many other child stars, growing up in the spotlight wasn’t all the glitz and glamor that people thought it was. Sweetin isn’t proud of a lot of the things she’s done, but what she can be proud of are the struggles that she overcame, and the person that she’s become today. These are 15 Things Jodie Sweetin Doesn't Want Full House Fans To Know.
15 She Was Adopted
Not many people know that the sassy middle Tanner was actually adopted in real life. As she revealed in her book, unSweetined, she had a rough start in life. At just nine months old, she was adopted by her uncle. Both of her parents were in jail when she was born. Her mother suffered from drug abuse and addiction. Meanwhile, her father was killed in a prison riot. She decided to keep this a secret for years, as to not make an impact on her career since she started at such a young age. Her adoptive parents wanted the best for her, but she was afraid that it would be bad if the public found out. It turned out to be a good decision on her part, as she landed the role of the spunky Stephanie Tanner on Full House, and the rest was history.
14 She Began Drinking At 14
Child stars are often known to kind of fall off of the deep end as they get older. They can’t handle real life, and often turn to things that aren’t good for them. As for Jodie Sweetin, her downward spiral started at a very early age. Apparently things were too much to handle for her, and she soon turned to alcohol and started drinking. The worst part? She was just 14 when this began.
She began to spiral downward once the show ended in 1995. Sweetin described in unSweetined that she finally started turning to alcohol when she attended her co-star and on-screen sister, Candace Cameron Bure’s wedding in 1996. She noted that she had about two bottles of wine, and got really, really drunk. She liked the way the alcohol made her feel and that’s when she began to slide down a slippery slope to a very dark world.
13 She Was An Alcoholic
Since she began drinking at just 14, she started to slowly spin out of control, drinking more and more until it became a huge problem. Sweetin was just a teenager when she became an alcoholic. She revealed in her book unSweetined that it made a huge impact on her life. She attended college, where she lived on campus and had her first taste of real freedom. Every day was a party to Sweetin; she was drinking on a daily basis and getting drunk nearly every day. She lost her focus and forgot why she was even in college in the first place. She never went to her classes, and never completed her assignments. At the end of her first semester, her GPA was a 0.9. Her alcoholism continued even after college. She tried to seek help for her drinking, but nothing seemed to work, as she continued to drink.
12 She Was An Addict
As if alcohol wasn’t bad enough, Sweetin also began to turn to the harder stuff. She dabbled with some drugs while in high school, having taken ecstasy quite a few times. When she was in college she also turned to cocaine, snorting it almost as much as she was drinking. In 2002 she met and fell in love with a police officer named Shaun Holguin, and the two quickly married. Despite the fact that he was a police officer, she continued to abuse drugs, becoming quite the addict. It gets worse for Sweetin, if that’s even possible. Looking for a bigger high, she turned to an even heavier drug, and began smoking and snorting meth behind his back, as she revealed in unSweetined. It became a habit real fast. At this point, Sweetin was sucked in and had become a full-blown addict. She would struggle for years to get clean.
11 She Was Married Three Times
As if Sweetin didn’t have enough drama with her alcoholism and drug abuse, she struggled in the love department, as well. Not many people know that Sweetin was married three times. Her first husband being officer Shaun Holguin in 2002. The two wound up divorcing just four years later in 2006. Not long after, she married Cody Herpin in 2007, and the two only remained married for three years and divorced in 2010. Finally, she married her third husband Morty Coyle, in 2012, only to divorce four years later in 2016.
Sweetin has two children, Zoie born in 2008, with her second husband Herpin, and Beatrix in 2010 with her third husband, Coyle. She didn’t have much luck in love, but drugs and alcohol most likely played a role in that. Regardless, she’s happy because she has her two daughters that she loves more than anything else.
10 She Kept Her Third Marriage A Secret
Sweetin took a note from her past self about hiding things from the public. Just like the fact that she hid that she was adopted at nine months old for many years, she decided to keep her third marriage to Morty Coyle in 2012 a secret for a while as well.
She had explained that her and then-husband Coyle wanted to keep things intimate and out of the public eye, and it wasn’t something that the public needed to know right away. This was something that she wanted to do for them and only them. On their first wedding anniversary, the couple decided to share the news with the world and announced that they had been married for a year already. However, her thought process behind keeping things a secret to help them actually didn’t help at all. The couple split not long after the announcement.
9 She Had Problems With Her Fourth Fiancé
Although she divorced her third husband in 2016, she was quick to start a relationship with Justin Hodak. Just like herself, Hodak was also a recovering drug addict. He was arrested a few times and violated his parole. That didn’t matter to Sweetin, as she announced that they were engaged in 2016.
The couple then split up in early 2017, as things went sour rather quickly between the two. They separated, and Sweetin took out a restraining order against Hodak. In the restraining order she noted that he had been abusing drugs again, and threatened to shoot himself. Apparently he had a history of harassing her and her family while he was under the influence and enough was enough. As a result, the relationship was officially over and we hadn’t had the chance to see Sweetin walk down the aisle for the fourth time. However, with the temper on Hodak, we're really glad she didn’t.
8 She Used To Self Harm
When it comes to heavy users like Sweetin was, there are a lot of times that they do irrational things because they’re under the influence. In her book unSweetined, she told readers that there was a time in her life that she caused harm to herself.
While she was in college, we all now know that there wasn’t much studying going on, and that Sweetin was either constantly getting high, getting drunk, or even both. One time while she was in a drunken episode, she blacked out and actually cut herself with razors. She noted in her book that all she wanted to do was “feel something,” and unfortunately that’s what she turned to. She never mentioned how often she did it, or if there even was a second time. She felt so low at the time that she thought this was the only thing she could do to feel something.
7 She Worked At A Recovery Center
Recently, Sweetin shared that she was working at a drug and alcohol recovery center. Before Fuller House came to be and filming for the hit show began, Sweetin was celebrating her sobriety, and wanted to help others for real this time. She got involved with a drug and alcohol recovery center, which was conveniently next to the set of John Stamos aka Uncle Jesse’s new show, Grandfathered. It was the best of both worlds for Sweetin, being able to help others and be close to her co-star once again. Sweetin even made use of the center that she worked at, taking advantage of what they offered, she stayed at the facility when she was going through her divorce with her third husband, Morty Coyle. Although she really didn’t advertise the good that she was doing at the facility, she still stayed involved. She had finally turned her life around.
6 She Went To Rehab Several Times
Getting over an addiction isn’t easy, and for Sweetin, it was going to be even harder since she was a drug addict and an alcoholic. With two forces against her, she knew it was going to be a rough recovery, and that it wasn’t going to be an easy battle at all. She was in and out of 12 step programs when she was a teen, though nothing seemed to work as her addiction only got worse and worse. According to Sweetin in her book, unSweetined, her first real stint in rehab was in 2005. Thinking that this would be it, and she could finally get back to a somewhat normal life, living a clean life didn’t last long, as she was back to using drugs and drinking not too long after. When she entered rehab in 2008, she wanted to get better not only for herself, but for her daughter. She still struggled with complete sobriety, but eventually succeeded.
5 She Relapsed Several Times
During her first “real” trip to rehab in 2005, she didn’t fair very well at all and things were off to a rocky start. Unable to control her urges, she continued to drink and smoke meth while she was in the treatment facility. It didn’t seem to work out for her, leaving the rehab facility and turning back to drugs and alcohol yet again. In fact, over a few months between 2005 and 2006, Sweetin claimed in her book that she spent over $60,000 in drugs and hotel rooms.
Her first child, Zoie was born in 2008, where she tried for sobriety again, only to start drinking not long after. She’s claimed sobriety a number of times, only to turn back to the drugs and the alcohol. It was a back and forth fight to become sober, but she finally overcame it, wanting a better life for her daughters.
4 She Gave Speeches About Being Sober, While...
After claiming sobriety the first time, she decided that she wanted to share her story with others to prove that you can get sober, and you can overcome your battles. However, she relapsed and turned back to the drugs and alcohol, and was lying to everyone. She would go on stage and preach about being sober and how bad drugs and alcohol are, and that no matter what, you can and will overcome everything. She stated in her book, “I thought for sure that one of the professors would take one look at me and kick me out. But none did. They wanted to hear about the trials and tribulations of Jodie Sweetin, or at least the Jodie Sweetin I had created." She had to live with the fake persona that she made, telling everyone she was strong while she was still getting high in private.
3 She Had Nasty Custody Battles
When Sweetin and her second husband Cody Herpin divorced in 2010, they began a custody battle for their daughter Zoie, who was born in 2008. Herpin accused her of not being fit to be a mother to Zoie, claiming that she would forget about her and just get high and drink, and fail to take care of her. It was a nasty battle that she would eventually win. Unfortunately for Sweetin, the same situation happened again. In June 2013, Sweetin filed for legal separation from her third husband, musician Morty Coyle. She filed for custody of their daughter Beatrix, and as a result, Coyle wouldn’t allow that, and filed for joint custody. He also filed for a request to not pay Sweetin spousal support, and of course it turned really ugly, really fast, just like the first time around. Luckily for Sweetin she won both cases and has custody of both of her daughters.
2 She Had An Emergency Custody Investigation
The final straw for Sweetin to finally get sober once and for all was the thought of potentially losing any kind of custody of her daughter. She explained in her book that she wanted to get sober for good on December 7, 2008 when that threat was made very real. She had been drinking still and put her daughter in danger. She claimed that she didn’t have much to drink, but still got in the car with her daughter and drove with alcohol in her system. Her husband at the time began to question her drinking and how much she did it around her daughter. As a result, an emergency custody investigation began on Sweetin, to see if it was affecting the way she raised her child.
That was a reality check for her, and she explained that that was it. From that day going forward, she knew she had to get clean and sober and she needed to stick to it. Otherwise, she could say goodbye to full custody of her daughter. She still struggled for a few years, but eventually overcame her addiction.
1 She Was High At A Movie Premiere For The Olsens
The cast of Full House were always close to one another, and it was something that a lot of fans loved about them. In 2004, the Olsen Twins were at the height of their careers, releasing movies and other merchandise that people couldn’t get enough of. Their movie, New York Minute premiered that year, and the cast of Full House actually attended the premiere in support of the tiniest Tanners.
In her book unSweetined, she admitted that she was so high at the premiere. Before walking the red carpet with her former cast mates, Sweetin had snorted meth in a bathroom stall. She said in the book, "I was pulling off the deceit. It was hard for people to believe I was doing that much drugs. I look at photos from that event, and I didn't even look strung out!"
Looking at the pictures now that we know otherwise, we can now see that something was up. How did we miss it?
