Did you ever wonder what happened to some of your favorite celebrities? Many of them have stepped out of the public spotlight, but the reasons as to why that is will shock you. Some of our entries such as Thora Birch and Stephen Collins may be defining parts of your childhood. Though learning more about the dark side of Collins is sure to also ruin 7th Heaven for you.
Other entries like Michael Jace may have been tremendous as a police officer on The Shield but he has far more in common with the criminals he encountered on the show. But he isn't the only celebrity behind bars, as Mark Salling also recently found out that's where he's spending the next few years of his life.
Some celebrities on our list have also stepped out of the spotlight for reasons that might not be related to illegal scandals but may still shock you. Such as what sitcom gave Jenna Fischer the boot, why Jack Gleeson decided Westeros was enough for his acting career and why Oscar-winner Mo'Nique was blackballed following her big Oscar win.
These are the 15 Shocking Reasons You Don't Hear About These Celebs Anymore
15 Kirk Cameron Quit Hollywood For Religion
Kirk Cameron was one of the biggest teenage stars with his role on the series Growing Pains. But while working on the show, Cameron started fancying a woman who was religious and as a result - started going to church where he realized his religious side.
"For me in my life, the biggest celebrity, the biggest star, the one who is famous in my mind—not just here on earth, but throughout the universe— is Jesus Christ. He’s the One who I applaud and thank," said Cameron.
He currently works with the evangelical ministry The Way of the Master. Though he also came under fire in September for his comments about Hurricane Harvey and Irma
"Is it just Mother Nature in a bad mood? I don’t know how you think about it but I think it could be something much more than all of that.”
14 Jack Gleeson Quit Because He Doesn't Like The Acting Lifestyle
Jack Gleeson could have continued to have himself a tremendous career playing antagonistic characters. After all, who didn't want to punch Joffrey in the face?
But after his character was killed off the show, you may be shocked to hear that Gleeson elected to kill off his career. "The lifestyle that comes with being an actor in a successful TV show isn't something I gravitate towards," said Gleeson who then put his focus into his education.
No scandal here, just a shocking potential end to one of the most promising actors that television has seen.
13 Manny Pacquaio Says LGBTs Are Worse Than Animals
Manny Pacquiao is one of the best boxers to ever enter the ring. But no amount of brain damage is going to explain his stance that homosexuals.
When talking in 2012, Pacquaio voiced his stance on same-sex marriage "If we approve male on male, female on female (marriage), then man is worse than animal," a sentiment he allegedly reiterated in February 2016.
Pacquiao is also under fire after it became public knowledge that he had disclosed an injury going into the Mayweather Vs Pacquaio bout. Last but not least, Pacquiao is also under investigation in the Philippines for failure to pay upwards of $2.2 billion worth of taxes.
Pacquiao has since stepped away from the ring in order to devote all of his time to working as a senator in the Philippines.
12 Tila Tequila Shows Love For Hitler
Tila Tequila may have made a name for herself by being the star of a reality TV dating show, but nobody would want to date her after you read the comments from her.
Taking to Twitter on May 6th, 2016 Tequila said
"There are only two things in this world, for which I would gladly sacrifice my own life; the destruction of all Jews and preservation of the white race. You know what will help Asians earn respect? An Asian version of Adolf Hitler… I want that person to be me; I want to save the world from this Zionist disease."
She also stated she wanted to sacrifice Sarah Silverman. The comments led to her getting removed from the UK Celebrity Big Brother and significantly hurt Tequila's marketability. No wonder Hollywood is stepping away from her!
11 R.Kelly Got Involved In Scandal With Minors
In 2002, a video emerged of R.Kelly allegedly getting intimate with an underage girl (though he denied it was him). After a police search found more inappropriate child content, R.Kelly was charged on several different counts. But we need to be upfront here... by the time everything wrapped up in court, R.Kelly was found not guilty.
R.Kelly definitely thinks he got given a bad rap when it came to how the public perceived him stating in an interview,
"All of a sudden, you're like the Bin Laden of America. Osama bin Laden is the only one who knows what I'm going through."
10 Jenna Fischer Replaced After Issues Behind The Scenes
While some of the celebrities on our list had downfalls that were their own undoing, that isn't the case for Jenna Fischer. The main reason you might not hear about Jenna Fischer may be that she was booted from the series Man with a Plan which stars Matt LeBlanc and is coming back for season 2.
Fischer was supposed to play the lead female role, but issues behind the scenes led to her being replaced by Liza Snyder. This could have been a big opportunity for Fischer to re-emerge in the spotlight following The Office that sadly didn't come to fruition. Let's hope that if one of her future projects hits, she'll just look back at this opportunity as one that she is very glad that she missed out on.
9 Azealia Banks Had One Controversy After The Next
We don't even know where to start with the musician Azealia Banks and the controversies she's instigated. How about the fact that in regards to the Bill Cosby sexual assault trial (which saw over 60 women come forward with accusations), she tweeted out
"Them bitches frontin' like they wasn't trying to get some of that pudding pop!!!!"
There are also several incidents in which Banks has gotten into confrontations, including punching and spitting on a flight attendant while attempting to leave a flight.
Her worst may have been when she told 14-year-old actress Skai Jackson to "grow some hips and start ur menses", which led to her then-upcoming festival headlining performance to get canceled.
8 Mark Salling Had 50,000 Photos And 150+ Videos Of Minors
You're staring at what is going to be one of the last photos of Mark Salling prior to him being locked up behind bars. He definitely doesn't look nearly as happy as he did when he was appearing on Glee! But when you find out his charges were for possession of child content, you might hope they throw away the key.
Salling admitted to being guilty to the charges earlier in October and as reported by The Blast, faces a potential sentence of four to seven years.
Over 50,000 images were found, and over 150 videos. We're sure that takeout food is going to taste better than what he'll get in jail!
7 Mo'Nique Was Blackballed After Winning Oscar
Mo'Nique's career should have only continued on an upward trend after she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Precious.
But Mo'Nique was told by Lee Daniels (who directed and helped produce the film) that she was being blackballed by Hollywood. In part perhaps due to her unwillingness to campaign for the Oscars as hard as the Academy had hoped.
Mo'Nique shared more of her thoughts in an interview with TheHollywoodReporter
"That's a question you would have to ask Lee Daniels. There have been people that have said, 'Mo'Nique, she can be difficult. Mo'Nique and her husband can be difficult.' They could probably be right. One of the networks said to [Lee] that I was 'really difficult to work with.' And I said, 'Well, that's funny, because I've never even worked with them, but OK.'
Whoever those people are who say, 'Mo'Nique is difficult,' those people are either heartless, ruthless or treat people like they're worthless. And that's unacceptable.
6 Thora Birch Said She Pissed Off Too Many People
Thora Birch may always be a large source of nostalgia for you if you grew up loving Hocus Pocus. Though as she got older, she also had roles such as American Beauty that helped bring her into the spotlight.
But Birch's career didn't take-off the way people had anticipated and when asked about it, Birch admitted
"I pissed a lot of people off over a long period of time and they found a way to upset me, hoping that upset would bring a change in my behavior. Like a distancing…But I’m done, I’m done. People wanted me to be not fine. A lot of it was bullshit." Birch also admitted she got fired from the movie Election in 1999 as well as from an off-broadway version of Dracula in 2010.
Birch retired from acting in 2012 but is starting to make a return in Hollywood including an upcoming movie with Emilia Clarke titled Above Suspicion.
5 Cee Lo Green Offensive Comment On Assault
Cee Lo Green is a talented musician and also utilized his public image to have a successful stint as a host on The Voice. But Green definitely took a serious hit when in 2014 following a court case for sexual battery, he tweeted
"People who have really been r*ped REMEMBER!!! If someone is passed out they're not even WITH you consciously! so WITH Implies consent"
While he de-activated his account temporarily after to avoid the backlash, people definitely haven't forgotten his offensive statement. The tweet also led to the cancellation of his television show The Good Life. Cee Lo went on to release his 5th album Heart Blanche the following year, to minimal success including not charting in the US.
4 Nelly Was Arrested On Second-Degree Assault Charges
Now if we're being fair, this is a story that is still developing. So for that reason, it's not like Nelly's name is going to be disappearing from the headlines. But if the allegations that he raped a woman aboard his tour bus prove to be true, it will definitely have the chance to be damaging to his career. Nelly's team has understandably denied the accusations completely including Nelly saying
"Let me say that I am beyond shocked that I have been targeted with this false allegation. I am completely innocent. I am confident that once the facts are looked at, it will be very clear that I am the victim of a false allegation."
It is infuriating to think that someone would lie about being sexually assaulted, so if Nelly is telling the truth as you may believe he is, here is hoping this woman sees the justice she deserves.
3 Stephen Collins Assaulted Minors
Stephen Collins is one of the most recognizable "TV Dads" of all-time for his role on 7th Heaven. The series aired for over a decade and also saw the rise of other stars such as Jessica Biel.
But Collins won't be anywhere near a Hollywood screen anymore after it became apparent that he had molested underage women. Collins talked about the incident (3 women in question) with People magazine in 2014. One of the victims spoke out about her encounters with Collins that involved him exposing himself to her saying that it happened on 3 different times.
His last notable role was in the series Revolution which aired in 2013.
2 M.C. Hammer Spent $500,000 A Month On Friends/Staff
You might love jamming out to the song "Can't Touch This" on a regular basis. But the one thing that M.C. Hammer can't touch, is anything that even kind of resembled the luxurious life he lived due in part to the success of the song.
It was reported in 2014 that Hammer had squandered his $30+ million fortune. Part of his expenses included a staff of over 200 people, as well as spending upwards of $500,000 to keep his entourage of 40 people having a good time.
He has since attempted to work with several different tech companies, which perhaps would understandably not put him in the public spotlight as much. Let's hope he also still doesn't hang out with people who run him that much money a month just to hang out with him!
1 Michael Jace Took His Wife's Life
Michael Jace spent years of his life portraying the character of Officer Julien Lowe on The Shield. But he's going to spend even longer playing the role of a prisoner after he was arrested in 2014.
The reason? He shot his wife, April Jace, killing her. If that wasn't sickening enough, his 10-year-old son heard him say,
"If you like running, then run to heaven," prior to finishing off April. He was sentenced to 40 years in jail. Something tells us that experience on the show probably isn't going to come in handy.
