Celebrities know that the price of fame is their privacy. Celebrities can’t expect to keep secrets or lead private lives. They are constantly followed around by paparazzi who hope fervently that they can snap a celebrity in a compromising situation. After all, the better, juicier the picture the more money the paparazzi will get for it.
It’s no surprise that over the years celebrities have gotten extremely annoyed with paparazzi to the point where they use violence to teach them a lesson. Of course, that doesn’t always work – attacking paparazzi is not the best answer to a celebrity’s breach of privacy and often the attack and violence get turned into a viral story instead.
However, some celebrities know that the best way to get back at paparazzi is to annoy them. Different celebrities have different ways of annoying the paparazzi, from wearing the same clothes every day to walking backward.
15. Daniel Radcliffe Wore The Same Clothes For Six Months
In 2007 the actor Daniel Radcliffe, best known for portraying Harry Potter in the Harry Potter series, made an important discovery. He realized that paparazzi did not take his picture if he wore the same clothes as the day before because the pictures would look old and would not sell.
So Radcliffe decided to wear the same outfit every day for six months while he appeared in the play Equus. And he did the same again in 2013 when he was starring in a play called The Cripple of Inishmaan.
Radcliffe said – “I would wear the same outfit every single time with different T-shirts underneath but I would wear the same jacket and zip it up so they couldn’t see what I was wearing underneath, and the same hat. So they could take photos for six months but it would look like the same day. They became un-publishable, which was hilarious because there’s nothing better than seeing the paparazzi get really frustrated.”
14. Dustin Hoffman Played Hide-And-Seek With Paparazzi
You can’t deny that the actor Dustin Hoffman has a great sense of humor. For example, do you remember that time in 2015 when the Oscar-winning actor kept hiding from the paparazzi? The snaps of him hiding – behind a post box, tree trunk or a telephone pole – are absolutely hilarious, especially when you also consider how much this must have annoyed the paparazzi.
When asked to explain his strategy in an interview with James in The Late Late Show with James Corden, Hoffman replied – “Well, I don’t know what the alternative is. It’s just you know, to somehow, I guess find a way to enjoy it.”
13. Jaden Smith Wore An Iron Man Costume
Singer Jaden Smith may be young but he’s certainly one of the more creative celebrities when it comes to dealing with paparazzi. For example, who can forget that time in 2013 when he wore an Iron Man costume when out and about in town with his friend Kylie Jenner?
Jenner looked stunning in her leopard print dress and full makeup and could not have contrasted more with Smith. The couple went to an expensive sushi restaurant and obviously had a great time. And while the paparazzi must have been annoyed at Smith’s attire, Smith’s fans were certainly amused and impressed by his ingenious camouflage.
12. Taylor Swift Walked Backwards
The singer Taylor Swift is constantly followed around by the paparazzi. And while she has never lashed out at them, she has come up with her own ingenious way of annoying them – she started walking backward.
Swift first started walking backward in 2015 when on a hike on a Los Angeles hiking trail. The photo of the singer walking backward soon went viral on Tumblr and naturally puzzled many of her fans.
However, since Swift is an avid Tumblr user herself, she was quick to explain her curious behavior – “I saw the guy with the camera and wasn’t in the mood so I hiked the whole trail backward and my security told me when to make turns. Ah, the tranquillity of the great outdoo- TAYLORCANYOULOOKOVERHEREGIVEUSASMILEAREYOUDATINGHFGHFGHFTAYLORHEYTAYLOR.”
11. Benedict Cumberbatch Shamed Paparazzi With A Politically-Conscious Message
Actor Benedict Cumberbatch does not appreciate paparazzi constantly snapping his photos when there are so many other, more useful, things they could be doing. So to get his message across, in 2013 when Cumberbatch was filming Sherlock he held up a politically conscious message for the paparazzi to read.
The message said – “Go photograph Egypt and SHOW THE WORLD SOMETHING IMPORTANT.” Cumberbatch used the sign to cover his face and he also wore a hooded coat and sunglasses. The actor was so covered up that you can barely tell it is him and not someone else in the photograph.
10. Pete Wentz Wears A Paper Plate Mask
In 2008, after Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson returned from their honeymoon in the Caribbean they were soon being followed by paparazzi. Of course, the couple did not miss being followed everywhere they went and so after the couple left a Memorial Day party in Los Angeles, Wentz decided to annoy the paparazzi by wearing a paper plate mask that had a message on it over his face.
The paper plate said – “YOUR AD COULD BE HERE… EMAIL: Jon@Dou**ebag.com” The prank made Simpson laugh and there’s no doubt that the paparazzi were annoyed. After all, while the photo of Wentz with a paper plate mask over his face is amusing, we’re sure the papers would have paid more for a photo of Wentz with his face exposed.
9. Katy Perry Wore The Same Tracksuit Over And Over Again
Recently, the singer Katy Perry admitted that on occasions where she doesn’t feel like being followed by paparazzi she wears the same Adidas tracksuit when she leaves her house in order to make the photos of her that the paparazzi have snapped much less valuable.
And of course, we know that this method works magically. After all, Perry is not the first celebrity to use this trick – Daniel Radcliffe wore the same clothes for six months every time he left his house all the way back in 2007 and 2013. The only question is- who’ll do it next?
8. Alec Baldwin Draped A Sheet Over His Head And Body
Remember that time when the actor Alec Baldwin decided to hide from the paparazzi by throwing a white bed sheet over his head and body? While the bed sheet did not actually hide the actor, it certainly annoyed the paparazzi.
You see, what happened is this – in 2012 Baldwin was collecting his marriage license when an annoying paparazzi would not cease following him. So, later that day Baldwin decided to emerge from his apartment with a white sheet draped over him. And he walked around town like that, with his assistant holding his suit for him.
7. Joseph Gordon Levitt Photographed The Paparazzi
Actor Joseph Gordon Levitt clearly has a low tolerance for paparazzi. And who can blame him? Just because you’re famous doesn’t mean that your privacy should always be breached and that you should always be followed around.
As a result, to annoy the paparazzi as much as they annoy him, Levitt sometimes takes to photographing the paparazzi just so they could get a taste of their own medicine. For example, in 2011 when a paparazzi was trying to take Levitt’s photograph in Los Angeles International Airport, instead of going around his business as usual, the actor started taking photos of the paparazzi instead.
6. Marilyn Manson Wrote Profanity On His Face
In 2012, Marilyn Manson decided to get back at the paparazzi by writing “F**k You” on his face when he was at the Los Angeles International Airport. He had done so to ensure that the paparazzi wouldn’t take any pictures of him and his girlfriend Lisa Usich because he knew that they wouldn’t be able to print photos that have swear words on them.
A Reddit user who goes by the username j_patrick_12 saw Manson at the airport that day and later said – “I just went through the LAX security line with Marilyn Manson. He had “F**K” scrawled in large letters across the bottom half of his face, with what appeared to be a grease pencil. As we each removed our boots in the security line, he kindly explained that it was not directed at me or anyone else in the airport, but rather at the paparazzi, so that they couldn’t sell any photos of him that they took. He was really apologetic about it, and covered his mouth around young children while apologizing to their parents for exposing their children to profanity.”
5. Leonardo DiCaprio Comes Up With Ingenious Ways To Hide From Paparazzi
Actor Leonardo DiCaprio is an expert when it comes to hiding from the paparazzi. Over the years, the actor has showcased some amazing camouflage tricks that have not only annoyed the paparazzi but also amused his fans.
So far, DiCaprio has hidden under his hat, under a half-folded umbrella, in his coat, by shielding his face with his hand, and by masking his face with a ski mask and a dark mask, among many other ways.
4. Gerard Butler Took Photos Of Paparazzi
Gerard Butler also hates it when the paparazzi refuse to leave him alone. And we understand him – no human being wants to be followed all day long (except for the Kardashians maybe).
Over the years, Butler has shown his annoyance with the paparazzi in many ways, including attacking annoying photographers who would not leave him alone.
However, there have been instances where Butler dealt with the paparazzi in much better, less violent ways. For example, remember that time when Butler decided to get back at the paparazzi by taking their picture instead?
3. Emma Stone And Andrew Garfield Brought Attention To Worthy Causes
In 2014, the actress Emma Stone and the actor Andrew Garfield decided to stay positive when faced with paparazzi. How did they manage to do that, you might wonder? Well, they found a positive use for them – they covered their faces with handwritten notes that listed charity names such as Autism Speaks and Worldwide Orphans.
The couple did it again for the second time sometime later. Their second note read – “Good morning! We were eating and saw a group of guys with cameras outside, so we thought let’s try this again. We don’t need the attention, but these wonderful organizations do. Here’s the stuff that matters.” The note then went on to list charity names.
2. Shia LaBeouf Wore A Paper Bag Over His Head
Shia LaBeouf also hides from the paparazzi in very strange ways, such as by wearing a paper bag over his head. He was photographed with a paper bag over his head casually walking around town on numerous occasions.
However, LaBeouf took his paper bag camouflage a step further when he appeared at the Berlin Film Festival with a paper bag, which said “I am not famous anymore”, over his head.
The strange appearance seems to have been the result of LaBeouf previously claiming that his whole life is “performance art.” The actor has said – “Performance art has been a way of appealing directly to a large public, as well as shocking audiences into reassessing their own notions of art and its relation to culture.”
1. Joseph Gordon Levitt Shot A Video Of The Paparazzi Harassing Him
In 2013, a video of paparazzi taken by actor Joseph Gordon Levitt made years before went viral after it was posted on Reddit. The video that Levitt shot was titled “Pictures of A**holes” and showed a couple of extremely aggressive paparazzi who were clearly uncomfortable to have the tables turned on them.
When Levitt, still shooting, asked the paparazzi for their names, one of them replied with “A**hole” and “A**hole Jr.” As Levitt began following them, the paparazzi began insulting the actor and even complained that the actress Nicole Kidman, who is, according to them, a much bigger star than Levitt, was much more agreeable than Levitt when the two paparazzi had approached her.
