The ‘90s may have happened quite a bit ago, but it seems everyone is nostalgic for that sweet, simpler time in life. It may be because we’re tired of constantly text messaging, swiping right, liking posts, and all the Snapchat filters. The ‘90s were a time without Uber, GrubHub, or even Facebook. There was no social media, you guys! The ‘90s was also a time during which Sarah Michelle Gellar was everywhere. She was on televisions and she was on the big screen. Magazine covers? Yeah, those too. Girlfriend was everywhere. Unfortunately for the entire world, 2017 seems to be a time of much less Sarah Michelle Gellar in our lives.
While Sarah Michelle Gellar may be known to many as Buffy, others know her best from her '90s film roles in I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, and, of course, Cruel Intentions. Gellar has since married I Know What You Did Last Summer costar, Freddie Prinze Jr., with whom she has had two children. Since the '90s, Gellar has devoted her life to other ventures, so as to have more time with her family. She’s co-founded Foodstirs, a startup that sells baking kits for kids. She also co-authored a cookbook. We understand the whole 'needing time for you family' thing, but that doesn't mean we don't totally miss Sarah Michelle Gellar being in the limelight.
Below are 15 sizzling photos of Sarah Michelle Gellar that are sure to make you miss the ‘90s, a time in our lives when she was everywhere, anywhere, and almost always killing vampires.
12 The Hottest Button Down Ever
While you could put a white button down shirt on just about anyone and it would look hot, Sarah Michelle Gellar looks outrageously hot wearing a white button down shirt in this photo. The fact that she’s wearing a lacy black bra, black stockings, and black garter belt also helps add to the sex appeal. It's basically a man's fantasy.
Oh, also there’s the fact that she has a perfect body. Of course, Sarah Michelle Gellar's body was in great shape from her time on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. While there was a stunt woman for the major action sequences, y’know like when Buffy would fall off of a building or something, Gellar was still toned from the kicks and punches she would throw in the fight scenes. Slay, Buffy!
14. She's A Superhero, Obviously
Sarah Michelle Gellar should pretty much always be dressed up this way. She looks like a real life superhero vampire slayer, which is how many of her fans see her.
Before Gellar's time on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she had some other major ‘90s roles. Between 1993 and 1995, Gellar appeared on All My Children as Kendall Hart, because who hasn’t appeared in a soap opera? It's where most of Hollywood starts. Either there or an episode of Law and Order: SVU.
Sarah Michelle Gellar also starred on the mostly unheard of Swans Crossing, which was a show about wealthy teenagers who would cause scandal in their small town. So, pretty much The O.C. before The O.C. Gellar, thankfully, found her way on Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1996 and, because of that, our televisions would never be the same.
11 Uh, With A Whip
Uh, we don’t really need to explain why this photo is hot, do we?
While Sarah Michelle Gellar ultimately won the role of Buffy, many others had been considered for the role, including Katie Holmes and Selma Blair, the latter of whom Gellar would go on to star in Cruel Intentions with. Oddly enough, Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase, originally auditioned for the role of Buffy. Meanwhile, Sarah Michelle Gellar had originally auditioned for the role of Cordelia. The flip-flop of roles and actresses isn’t uncommon in Hollywood, but it is crazy to think about since both Gellar and Carpenter owned their roles as Buffy and Cordelia respectively.
We can all be glad that Gellar nabbed the role of Buffy, as her wit and humor brought a lot of much needed lightness to a show about demons and the end of the world.
10 The Hottest Couple Of The '90s
Sarah Michelle Gellar looks especially ‘90s with her spaghetti strap shirt and miniskirt with a slit. But, the hottest thing in this photo is the fact that it’s Buffy and Angel, the ultimate star-crossed couple of the ‘90s.
For those of you unfamiliar with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in which case I urge you to start binge-watching it right now, Buffy is the one chosen to slay all the vampires in the world. Basically, it’s her versus vampires all day, every day. Meanwhile, Angel is a vampire… but a good one. The two fall for each other, because of course they do. Then, after sleeping together, the one true moment of happiness makes Angel lose his soul and reverts back to his baddie people-killing vampire self. So, Buffy is now in love with an evil vampire, who basically tortures her by killing her friends and family. It’s all super twisted, but still totally hot.
Buffy ends up killing Bad Angel and sending him to hell but he comes back, because there was a lot of coming back from the dead on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Now that Angel has his soul and his back from hell, Good Angel and Buffy engage in a romantic relationship but they can never again spend the night together or else Angel will go all bad boy. It’s, like, some of the most tragic love in the history of television.
Oh, and the fact that Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz would have the most attractive children ever was another reason it was all super hot.
9 The Most '90s Photo Ever Taken
If you were creating a time capsule for aliens or future humans to see what the ‘90s looked like, this picture would obviously be included. It’s Sarah Michelle Gellar, on roller blades, in light wash jeans, with a flannel. It’s about as ‘90s as you can physically get.
Sarah Michelle Gellar may be well-known for her blonde locks, but she looks pretty awesome as a brunette too. Not many actresses can pull off the ol’ switch-a-roo like that, but Gellar totally can. Being blonde was actually a big component of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Joss Whedon, the creator, said the idea for Buffy came to him after watching too many horror movies in which the blonde was the first to die. He felt that blondes needed a better image and thus, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was born. Considering the fact that Buffy routinely took down every big bad she came into contact with, we’d say that Whedon certainly help rebrand the blonde image. Way to be, Joss Whedon.
8 I Know What You Did Last Summer
LOL, remember how we just said that Joss Whedon was tired of seeing the blonde die in horror movies? Well, here’s a still from I Know What You Did Last Summer, in which the blonde totally dies.
While she was busy on television as Buffy, Gellar took film roles as well. One of which was her role in I Know What You Did Last Summer. The film wasn’t received too well by critics, but it did earn $125 million on its budget of just $17 million. Most notably though, Gellar met her future husband Freddie Prinze, Jr. on the set on this film. The film also starred Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ryan Phillippe, because it had the most ‘90s cast ever. Gellar played the blonde prom queen in the film and, like Whedon had said about the blondes, she died. Hewitt was the final girl of the film and went on to star in the sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which was even worse than the original so maybe Gellar is lucky her character died.
7 Scream Queen Extreme
This photoshoot may seem a little uncomfortable looking, but it's obviously a nod to Sarah Michelle Gellar’s scream queen status. In 1997, she not only starred in I Know What You Did Last Summer, but she also had a role in Scream 2, which was received much more favorably by critics. Her role in Scream 2 was, admittedly, a very small role in which Gellar played a blonde sorority girl who is killed. Somewhere in 1997, Joss Whedon was mad as hell that Sarah Michelle Gellar kept getting killed on the big screen while he was all about reinventing that blonde imagine with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Joss Whedon did kill his blonde heroine a few times on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Buffy drowned in season one of the show, but was quickly brought back. She died again in season five and actually went to hell, but again was brought back. There was a third time during which Buffy was shot, but Willow magically stopped Buffy from dying. Like we said, coming back from hell or the death is pretty commonplace on Buffy.
6 The Highest Slit Ever
Sarah Michelle Gellar had to leave her underwear at home for this photoshoot. That’s, like, the highest slit ever. It’s showing off a lot of leg. But, girlfriend had some pretty great legs to show off, so why not?
In a very ‘90s move, Gellar appeared on an episode of Sex and the City. She played the role of Carrie’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) agent, who is trying to turn her column into a movie. While Gellar is more widely known for her roles in horror films and television shows, she actually had some great comedic chops. Much of Buffy the Vampire Slayer had Joss Whedon’s tone, which would later be shown in his blockbuster hit The Avengers. His ability to insert humor into action sequences is what set Buffy apart from other melodramatic vampire shows and Gellar’s ability to deliver the lines is what the show essentially depended upon.
7. '90s Angst At Its Finest
Alright, so the one photo of Sarah Michelle Gellar on roller blades is definitely the most ‘90s photo in this bunch, but this one has to be a close second. With the crop top and high-waisted jeans, it screams ‘90s. Also, check out Gellar’s pouting teenager face. She is full-on '90s angst.
In 2004, Buffy the Vampire was officially over and scream queen Gellar was the star of yet another horror flick. This time it was The Grudge, a Japanese remake. While it received split reviews, The Grudge raked in $187 million on a budget of just $10 million. FYI, that’s why Hollywood loves horror movies. They are incredibly cheap to produce and can sometimes yield huge returns. Let us all never forget that The Blair Witch Project had a budget of $60,000 and made $248.6 million at the box office.
Gellar also appeared in 2006’s The Grudge 2, which didn’t do as well as the original but so is the way of sequels.
5 Cruel Intentions
This may seem like treason to Buffy fans, but Cruel Intentions may have been Sarah Michelle Gellar’s hottest role. The dark, teen drama received split reviews and only made $75 million at the box office, but it has since become a cult classic. It spawned two direct-to-video sequels, one of which stars Amy Adams because you have to start somewhere, right? Fanship for the film still lives on, to the point that NBC was developing the film as a TV series. Gellar even appeared in the pilot episode that NBC shot, but it has since been reported that the network has chosen not to go through with the series. Why NBC wouldn’t want Gellar to reprise her role of Kathryn Merteuil is beyond us, though the character was definitely more HBO than NBC.
If you haven’t seen Cruel Intentions yet, it’s ‘90s teen drama at its best. It stars Gellar and Ryan Phillippe as step-siblings who toy with people’s emotions and make sexual bets with one another. Also, young Reese Witherspoon is in the film being very Reese Witherspoon-y.
4 Little Red Riding Hood
After Buffy the Vampire Slayer wrapped, Sarah Michelle Gellar was free to go do whatever she wanted so she starred in a bunch of terrible films. Okay, we’re just kidding (kind of). Gellar starred in Suburban Girl, The Air I Breathe, Possession, and Veronika Decides to Die. Heard of any of those movies? Nope, us either. After being tied to a television show for a while, actors can sometimes have difficulty finding another show that fits them as perfectly. This was clearly the case for Sarah Michelle Gellar, who had just spent years playing a strong, independent, hot, young, and funny vampire slayer. She had great comedic timing and could do action, but she also looked like your typical damsel in distress. In other words, Hollywood didn’t know what to do with Gellar.
Um, hey, Hollywood, put her in a red nightgown, strap a cape on her and call it a day. Girlfriend looks good in the above photo, like so good we'd go see the movie even if it sucked.
3 Young And In Love
No one is more beautiful than a woman in love, which is clearly what Sarah Michelle Gellar is in the above photo. She is like a ray of in-love joy.
While Gellar met Freddie Prinze, Jr. on the set of 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, the pair didn’t begin dating until 2000 – perhaps because the rumors about Gellar dating David Boreanaz were true? I mean, what else could have been keeping Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze, Jr. apart for three years? It was totally Angel, uh I mean David Boreanaz. Whatever the case, Gellar and Prinze got engaged in April of 2001 and married in September 2002. On their fifth anniversary in 2007, Gellar officially changed her name to Sara Michelle Prinze. The couple have now been together for fifteen years, which is about 200 years in Hollywood time.
They reunited on screen in 2002’s Scooby-Doo, playing onscreen couple Fred and Daphne. The film brought in $275 million, making it Gellar’s most successful film.
3. Leaving Little To The Imagination
After trying her hand in feature films, Sarah Michelle Gellar returned to the small screen with The CW’s Ringer, which only lasted one season. In Ringer, Gellar played a young woman who was running from the mob. She decided to hide from the mob by pretending to be her twin sister, who was also apparently in trouble with some bad people. The premise is very CW and while the show received mixed reviews, critics praised Gellar's performance.
In 2013, Gellar appeared as Robin Williams’ daughter in CBS’s The Crazy Ones. This, again, only ran for one season, because it’s hard to get a show off the ground these days. In the meantime, Gellar has also done voice-work on Robot Chicken, Star Wars Rebels, American Dad!, and The Simpsons. Oh, and in 2015, she starred in a Princess Rap Battle in which she played Cinderella. It was amazing. Thank you, Internet gods.
2 Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Ah, Buffy and her trusty stake. This is how many people will always remember Sarah Michelle Gellar, since the show was such a strong influence on their life. Not only did the show flip stereotypes by making the pretty, blonde girl the hero, but it also showcased a group of high school outsiders who routinely saved the world. Anyone who ever felt left out in high school (so, everyone) can relate to Buffy, Willow and Xander's trials and let downs throughout the show.
Sarah Michelle Gellar will, undoubtedly, go down as one as playing one of the strongest female heroines to ever be on television, among the ranks of Wonder Woman. In fact, she has a few things in common with ol' Wonder Woman. In 1999, Gellar signed on to be the face of Maybelline. This was the first time the beauty company had a celebrity spokeswoman since Lynda Carter. Like we've been saying, Sarah Michelle Gellar is basically a superhero.
And fun fact about Buffy’s stakes – every time she staked a vampire and he turned to dust, it cost $5,000 in special effects. Knowledge is power, my friends.
1 Forever A Beauty
It’s 2017 and quite a few things are different about the world. There’s a style of date called Netflix and chill, there's an app named Tinder, and Donald Trump is the President of the United States. One thing is the same, though, and that is Sarah Michelle Gellar is still just as beautiful as she was in the ‘90s. She is a beauty, through and through.
While Sarah Michelle Gellar may take on many new roles, she will always be Buffy to many of her '90s fans. In portraying Buffy, she brought a new kind of heroine to television. She was blonde, had boy troubles and stopped the world from ending, like, 14 different times. But, since it is 2017 after all, we can all binge-watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer on Hulu. So, I guess that's one cool thing about 2017.
Slay on, Sarah Michelle Gellar. We’ll forever miss you on our televisions.
