‘A skeleton in the closet’ is an idiomatic expression used to describe a shameful secret or undisclosed fact, which a person makes efforts to conceal for being potentially ruinous to their career or well being. No matter how innocent and flawless some people may seem to us, be sure that in their closets (and even cupboards!) the bare bones of not one or two skeletons viciously rattle.
Fortunately for us, the unpopular and unimportant, no social networking or resourceful paparazzi are eager to bring our shocking secrets to light. But what to say about the famous and the beautiful? One thing is for sure: the bigger the celebrity, the bigger the skeleton. Or the closet, in some drastic cases. And that’s not the worst part – the worst part is that, unlike us, the famous have to explain themselves to the public. Of course, we want to see their hidden skeletons, especially if the stars acquired them in their past, that is before they made their big Hollywood arrival.
Although it is not Halloween, meet 15 of the creepiest and most shocking skeletons in Hollywood’s closets.
15 Kevin Spacey Grew Up Among Nazi Memorabilia
The two-time Oscar-winner Kevin Spacey is among those actors who are extremely close-mouthed when it comes to their past. But unlike most, he has a really solid reason for that.
Thomas Geoffrey Fowler, Spacey’s father, was a member of the American Nazi party. This was revealed by the actor’s older brother, Randy Fowler, with whom he hasn’t been on good terms for years. Fowler gave an interview for the British Mail, in which he alleged he and Spacey were brought up in a home decorated with Nazi memorabilia and were subject to constant abuse in their childhood. Geoff Fowler was a Holocaust denier with a moody temperament and never held a full-time job. He even made Randy quit the Scouts because the troop leader was Jewish. The brother also gave a graphic description of how he was raped by their parent.
14 12-Year-Old Jay-Z Shot His Brother
He is now celebrated as one of the most successful rappers, a loving husband and a doting father. But the picture of Jay-Z’s life hasn’t always been that idyllic. In an interview with The Guardian, the musician opened up about a horrible secret that had haunted him since childhood. When he was 12, he shot his drug-addicted brother over some stolen jewelry. “It was terrible, I was a child and I was terrified,“ Jay-Z recalls. His sibling survived the shooting and refused to press charges. Years later, Jay-Z hinted at this violent moment in his song "You Must Love Me": 'Saw the devil in your eyes, high off more than weed, confused, I just closed my young eyes and squeezed.'
13 Tim Allen Was A Dealer
What happened in the 1970s stayed in the 1970s! Fortunately for Tim Allen, what happened to him in those glorious years of free love and illegal substances consumption stayed there.
If you were looking for some quality coke in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in mid-1970s, Tim was your man. His business was doing fine until the day he got arrested at the airport for possession of over 650 grams of cocaine. He pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and gave the names of his other “co-workers” in exchange for a more lenient sentence. Instead of possible life imprisonment, he served only two years and four months in a federal correction institution in Minnesota. Although there are few mentions of the actor’s arrest and his time in prison on the web and a couple of words in his Wikipedia many details still remain undisclosed.
12 Mark Wahlberg Was A Violent Racist Bully
We may find the characters he portrays either cute or noble, or both, but in his youth Mark Wahlberg was far from cute and noble. Marky Mark had on his account a lot of youthful indiscretions, but the most outstanding one is him assaulting two Vietnamese-American men in 1988. He confronted the guys on a street in Boston, calling them “slant-eyed gooks”. He knocked one of them unconscious with a wooden stick, and punched the other. The 16-year-old Wahlberg was arrested and charged with attempted murder, although he admitted he was intoxicated and claimed this was in no way a hate crime. Anyway, he couldn’t get away with it and did 45 days in prison. What is more, in addition to his assault conviction there was another one, which stemmed from previous series of attacks he committed. Two years earlier, Mark was chasing and throwing rocks and racial epithets to some African-American school kids.
11 Miley Cyrus’ Sad Secret Brother
One is currently among the most famous young performers, with millions in the bank. The other has a part-time job in an electronics store for $7.50 an hour. Simply put, Miley and her half-brother Christopher are worlds apart. The talented singer has four legitimate siblings from mom Tish and her no less famous dad, Billy Ray Cyrus. The “secret” fifth sibling, Christopher, was a result of Billy Ray’s brief relationship with a waitress in South Carolina. The couple split by the time their son was born on April 8, 1992, and the musician’s new girlfriend and future wife, Tish, was already pregnant with Miley. Christopher never got to have a close relationship with the Cyrus family, and 25 years later, Christopher is still not seen as a member of the celebrity family.
10 Laurence Fishburne’s Daughter Does Naughty Films
The year was 2010, and Montana Fishburne was barely legal when she decided to pursue a career in the adult film industry. Her decision led to a whole chain of dramatic events. Her famous and very much respected father went through hell to prevent his baby girl’s sex tapes from being released. Many of his friends felt his pain and tried to buy up all the films Montana starred in for more than a million dollars. Despite their efforts the DVDs were shipped to the stores around the country. Not only did Montana act recklessly against her father’s consent, but she made things even worse. After the XXX videos’ release, Fishburne was very preoccupied about his daughter’s safety and hired a PI to watch her. When Montana found out she had been followed, she faked a suicide attempt to scare her father. She pretended to drink bleach.
In an interview following the tape release, Montana said, “I did talk to my father. He told me he was embarrassed by me.”
9 R. Kelly Caught In A Scandal
The year was 1991. The 24-year-old rapper met the 12-year-old Aaliyah, and three years later married her using a falsified birth certificate according to which his bride was 18 and not 15. However, the marriage was annulled and the two signed an agreement never to speak publicly about their relationship.
This wasn’t the only time the Grammy-award winner was involved in an illegal sexual relationship with a minor. Over the years, R. Kelly was accused by many women who claimed he was having sex with them when they were still children, and he was videotaping them during their intimate moments. Chicago police brought the rapper to trial on a total of 14 felony charges. R. Kelly was found not guilty on any of them. Police in Florida attempted to pursue charges of child pornography against Kelly, but he got away with this one, too, as the judge threw the case out on the premise that the evidence was obtained illegally.
8 Bill Cosby Denies Having An Illegitimate Daughter
Oh yes, it seems like America’s much-loved TV dad keeps more than one skeleton in his closet. And he’d been keeping it there for quite some years! In 1997, the then 22-year-old Autumn Jackson came forward claiming she was Cosby’s illegitimate lovechild. According to Jackson, she was the product of the affair the actor had with her mother, the comedian Shawn Upshaw, then 27. Cosby admitted he had been sleeping with Shawn while “happily married” to his wife, Camille Cosby, but denied Autumn was his child. The young woman was later convicted on charges of extortion as she threatened Cosby to take the story to the press unless he paid her $40 million.
In November 2006, Cosby’s world was shattered again. This time a 32-year-old former Temple University employee accused him of drugging and raping her in his Philadelphia house two years earlier.
7 Chuck Berry Installed Hidden Cameras In Restaurant’s Bathrooms
Who would have believed that the rock icon who made hits like "Johnny B. Good" and "Roll Over Beethoven" was a massive pervert!
In 1990, Berry was arrested during a drug raid in his mansion in Wentzville, Missouri. The expectations of the authorities were huge, but the search turned up only small quantities of pot and hashish, two rifles, some hundreds of thousands in cash, and… an extensive porn collection. The latter, however, led to a scandalous report three years later. It was revealed that the singer had a liking for sexual fetishes involving defecation and spying on women in bathrooms.
According to the report, Berry installed hidden cameras in the women’s bathroom at his own restaurant in Wentzville. One camera was behind the toilet seat, and the others captured the toilet’s contents before the women flushed.
6 Woody Allen Molested His Adopted Daughter As A Child
We thought the scandals about Woody Allen’s love life were over when he married Soon-Yi Previn – the adopted daughter of his then partner, Mia Farrow. However, some sex abuse allegations stirred again the seemingly calm waters of his life. In 2014, another of his adopted children, Dylan Farrow, spoke for the first time in Vanity Fair about the abuse she was subject to when she was little. She said, “For as long as I could remember, my father had been doing things to me that I didn’t like.” The now 81-year-old director and comedian denied the abuse. But Dylan goes on, “People are saying that my ‘evil mother’ brainwashed me, because they refuse to believe that my sick, evil father would ever molest me.”
5 Bruno Mars Got Arrested For Possession
His life now may be all about dynamic performances and sexy ladies, but once, the chart-topping star treasured cocaine the most.
In February 2010, the Hawaiian singer, then 25, was arrested in the bathroom at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas after a nightclub performance. He was charged with possession of 2.6 grams of cocaine. The judge fined him $2,000 and gave him 200 hours of community service plus eight hours of drug counselling. Two years later his record was swiped clean. In an exclusive 60 minutes interview last year, Mars told host Lara Logan that his arrest changed his life for the better.
4 Roman Polanski Had Been Hiding From The Law For 32 years
Roman Polanski is, no doubt, one of the most genial filmmakers of today. However, with the skeleton which crawled out of his closet a couple of years ago, we started wondering if it was possible to enjoy the valuable things a person has created despite the awful actions they have done in their personal life.
In 1977, the director was arrested in LA and charged with having unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. Initially, Polanski pleaded guilty, but as soon as he was told he would probably do more years in prison than previously expected, he fled to France. From February 1978, he lived mostly in France and avoided visiting countries which would likely try to extradite him to the States. However, in September 2009, Polanski was detained by Swiss police when trying to enter Switzerland.
After more than three decades, the rape victim, Samantha Geimer, told her story in The Girl: A Life in the Shadow of Roman Polanski. The memoir features a picture of her thatPolanski had taken only days before the assault.
3 Woody Harrelson’s Contract Killer Father
He played everything – easy-affable ladies’ men, bad cops, good cops, pornographers and, of course, natural born killers. But his family life situation resembles more the scenarios of the last type.
Charles Voyde Harrelson, Woody’s father, was convicted of assassinating two people, one of whom was federal judge John H. Wood Jr. in 1979. In the course of the trial, a Texas drug lord testified that he had hired Harrelson to kill the judge for $250,000. Harrelson received two life sentences. Some years later, the killer dropped a bomb by claiming he had also assassinated John F. Kennedy – an admission he, however, withdrew shortly after.
Although father and son had been estranged for many years, in 1988, Woody Harrelson told People Magazine he was willing to get close to his father, as he was “one of the most articulate, well-read, charming people” he’d ever known.
Charles Harrelson had a heart attack and died in prison in 2007.
2 Bill O’Reilly Paid Off Women To Prevent Scandal
The article The New York Times published on April 1, 2017 was no joke at all. The newspaper revealed that five women had been given a total of $15 million by either the popular political commentator Bill O’Reilly or Fox News in exchange for their silence. The women intended to pursue litigations over allegations of sexual harassment against O’Reilly. They all worked directly for him or had appeared on his show, The O’Reilly Factor. The accusers complained of “verbal abuse, unwanted advances and lewd comments.” And the TV host’s personal secretary even said that her boss would call her and masturbate over the phone. After New York Times came up with details about the accusations and the settlements, Fox News immediately terminated O’Reilly’s employment, paying him $25 million in severance.
1 Anne Perry Was Involved In Murder As A Child
13 years ago, shocking news about the bestselling crime and mystery author surfaced. In her youth, Anne Perry was involved with the murder of her friend’s mother! Actually, she was one of the two teenage girls convicted in a shocking New Zealand murder case. Back then Perry was called Juliet Hulme and her identity was revealed in light of the growing interest in the 1994 film Heavenly Creatures, which was based on the 1954 murder case (Perry was played by Kate Winslet).
In the early 1950s, Hulme, a.k.a Anne Perry, developed a strong relationship with Pauline Parker. When Hulme was about to leave the country after her parents’ divorce, Parker wanted to come along. Her mother said no, and the two girls hatched a plan to eliminate the “obstacle”. The mother was killed with a half-brick in an old stocking while out for a walk on a remote trail.
By the time Perry’s dark secret came to light in 1994, she was publishing her 19th book.
