Remember the scandalous show The Hills? It followed Laguna Beach and focused around Lauren Conrad, who is now an author and fashion designer, as she went to Los Angeles to work as an intern at Teen Vogue. We got to see what it meant to live the not-so-glamorous life of an intern, though there was a lot of fun to be had on the show. Jobs were lost, friendships ended, and hearts were broken.

The show called it quits after six seasons, and not too many of the cast stayed in the limelight. Lauren Conrad seems to be the only one who avoided scandal and who has become really successful. Many people believed the show was a big fake and it turned out that it was. On the series finale, they panned out to reveal that Brody Jenner was, in fact, standing on a soundstage. Why did they have to kill our buzz like that? Fake or not, there have been some serious scandals and fights that have come from the show. Have you ever wondered what really went on behind the scenes of The Hills? Check out these shocking secrets behind the show.

They Made A Ton Of Money

Judging by the show, the girls looked to have a fairly wealthy lifestyle, and you had to assume that they were living somewhat of a socialite life, going to expensive clubs and so on. It turned out that they were making much more money from the show then people even thought. In fact, MTV was trying to "downplay" the lives that the girls were really living. Heidi Montag stated, “MTV wanted to downplay our lifestyles and pretend we weren't getting the checks that we actually were, so I think that was the blurry line between the lives we were really living and the lives that they wanted us to live, and things like that.” That’s the problem with reality TV, we never really know what is truly going on with the show. The scandals seemed pretty dead on, though.

Lauren Conrad Got Paid The Most

Well, we suppose that’s not surprising. It was her show, and why shouldn’t she get paid more? It’s always surprising to us that celebrities will get ticked off when the show’s lead gets paid more than they do. Usually, the show would not be able to go on without the lead character, so producers will do whatever it takes to keep them happy. In the case of Lauren, it just made more sense. We’re not sure how the other players on the show felt about it, but it was confirmed by Heidi Pratt in an interview, “I mean, obviously Lauren got paid the most — it was her show. She was driving from Laguna to the Hills." It shouldn’t be something that cast members get riled up about; it’s common sense. Unfortunately, someone always gets upset.

They Weren’t Allowed To Wear The Same Outfit Twice

Did you happen to notice on the show The Hills that no one ever wore the same thing twice? It was no coincidence. MTV did not want the cast to ever wear the same thing twice. So, obviously they supplied the cast with awesome clothes to wear, right? That would be a dead hell no. Although the cast was expected to wear new designer clothes all the time, they were also expected to purchase their own clothing. What? That’s not right. "During The Hills, we were not allowed to wear outfits twice, so I asked [MTV] to supply me with a wardrobe, but apparently, I had to buy it all myself,” said Heidi Pratt. That’s totally shifty. If MTV expected their "characters" to wear new clothing all the time, they shouldn’t expect the cast to foot the bill themselves. You would think that MTV would have some connections anyway.

There Was Underage Drinking

Geez, it’s not like they hid it or anything. The cast was at clubs all the time, and they were often filmed at Les Deux, which was once a popular club in Los Angeles. What some shows will do is have their cast drink pop or water while at the club to keep them out of trouble. But according to Heidi Pratt, they were all boozing like it was going out of style. Not surprising, hit show or not, they were young and wanted to have fun just like we all were at that age. “When we were all at Les Deux, we were drinking whatever we could get our hands on. I'm sure it was probably Jack Daniel's and Jäger. Water was not what we were drinking. We got in because I did work for Bolthouse and who doesn't want some hot, young, fun girls in their club?”

The Promotion Was Faked

During the series, although Elodie was the one up for a promotion at Bolthouse, Heidi Montag got the job instead. It caused a lot of drama on the show because people felt that Elodie got robbed because Heidi didn’t really work hard to get the promotion. Elodie flipped out on Heidi, stating that she did not deserve the promotion. Well, it turned out that Heidi didn’t even technically work at Bolthouse, which means Elodie’s reaction was completely pointless. There wasn’t even a real promotion, so Elodie needed to chill. “I definitely did not get the promotion over Elodie! She really worked there and I pretend worked there, so it was obviously a pretend promotion for her to be upset about. That whole plot was scripted,” Heidi Pratt stated. Stop lying to us MTV!

There Were No Dirty Stares

There is so much that goes on behind the scenes, including a lot of editing, so when we think that someone is giving or getting the evil eye, it may not even be in the same scene or for any reason at all. Heidi Pratt revealed that a lot of it wasn’t even what the audience thought it was. Lo Bosworth revealed, "When you're in production on a show, you have to do something called taking the 'room tone,' just so that all of the microphones are evened out and the sound on the video is normal. Everyone would have to be quiet … So, they would catch us gazing off into space, and looking like we were really bored. And then, they'd edit those clips into the show to make it look like we were super mad at each other."

Spencer Really Graffitied The Wall

In season 3 of the show, there was a time when Spencer graffitied all over the living room wall in Heidi’s apartment. It looked pretty cool, but we imagine that the landlord wouldn’t have been too pleased about it. We have to wonder if it was real or if he paid someone to do it. Was the landlord paid off? We have to know! “Spencer had our apartment graffitied and the landlord was not allowed in at that time. We just painted it over with white paint so we weren't fined because I'm sure that would've been expensive. Spencer had his friend Eric, who is a professional graffiti artist, come in and do that,” stated Heidi Pratt. Well, at least we know it wasn’t Spencer that was that artistic because many of us had to wonder what he ever did on that show.

Spencer Did Leak The "Tape"

Spencer was always an untrusting character on the show, and you always had the feeling like he was totally fine with backstabbing anyone. We often wished that Heidi would break up with him already, but sometimes, her behaviour wasn’t much better. There was a time when Spencer leaked a rumour that there was a s*x tape between Lauren Conrad and Jason Wahler. It was untrue, but when Lauren accused Spencer of spreading the lies, Heidi stood up for her man: "Lauren is a cold-hearted killer. That's what people don't get. She tried to destroy us. If you want to throw missiles, I'm throwing a nuke. This is how I operate." It ruined the friendship between Heidi and Lauren, and then it all came out that Spencer did, in fact, spread the rumours. We're just not impressed with him.

Heidi Hasn’t Talked To Lauren In Years

A lot went on during The Hills. There were always fights between cast members and couples were constantly breaking up. A fake rumour about a sex tape is sure to ruin a friendship forever, especially when one friend doesn’t believe the other. Heidi Pratt has expressed that she feels regret over the friendship she used to have with Lauren Conrad. But sometimes, you just can’t go back, too much damage has been done. “The last time I spoke to Lauren was a few years ago. Like two or so. We kind of were talking a little and then we both were kind of like, "We're not friends." It's kind of awkward. But I do really love Lauren for everything that she has done for me and I do have a place in my heart for her. So, I am thankful for everything that she's done and I hope she has a great life.” It sucks when a guy comes between two friends.

Forced To Go To The Wedding

During Lauren’s last season on the show, she made it perfectly clear to everyone that she would not be attending Heidi and Spencer’s wedding. And yet, there she was. We wondered if she had a change of heart, but it turned out that she was forced by the producers to go to the wedding. “I know Lauren did not want to come to my wedding, and I was shocked when I saw her. That was real, and I was like, "Wow! You're here! This is crazy. They must've paid you a lot to come here!" I think they had both Lauren and Kristin [Cavallari] there to kind of pass on the baton and show that Kristin was the new head bitch in charge.” It’s funny that at least the shock on Heidi’s face was accurate.

Lauren Wasn’t Honest Most Of The Time

Well, that’s what Heidi Pratt had to say about it, and we’re not sure who we believe considering the show seems to be built on lies. Heidi has stated that if she could change anything, she would have demanded more honesty from Lauren. That could have saved their friendship more than anything. “If I had to do The Hills all over again, I would definitely have stood my ground more with Lauren and just have her be more honest with me. It was really hard getting her to agree to film with me, and then once I got there, having her be honest with me. It was just a really challenging time, so I'm a much stronger and different person now, so I feel like I could go more toe-to-toe.” Yikes, would anyone really want to do The Hills all over again? Maybe to rethink all the plastic surgery.

Brody And Lauren Never Hooked Up

But we bet that you thought they did, didn’t you? Tsk tsk, don’t you know that you can’t trust everything that you see on reality TV? Apparently, MTV made it look like the two were together when they were nothing more than friends. Why not just allow natural relationships to develop? Brody stated, "Lauren's a dear friend of mine, and it was pretty funny to have to live that reality. We were just friends. We'd film a scene of us kissing or being in this lovey-dovey scene, and then right after it would be like, 'cut,' and we'd be like, 'great to see you,' and we'd go our separate ways." In fact, Brody wants us to know that he didn’t hook up with anyone. "I didn't have sex with Jen Bunney. I didn't hook up with Audrina. I didn't hook up with any of these girls."

Lauren Refused To Film With Heidi

Awkward! Lauren would often avoid Heidi during filming which made it really hard to film together. Well a sex tape rumour will do that, right? It’s not something many people can get over. Embarrassingly enough, Lauren would often walk away from her at a club when Heidi was trying to film with her. “So originally, once Lauren and I split, she didn't really want to film together, and I would have to, like, find her at the bar and be like, "Hey, Lauren!" and she'd, like, run away. I just thought we were too good of friends for her to be playing me out on TV like that.” Yeah, that must have sucked, especially since it was Lauren’s show and she probably got away with a lot of stuff like that. It’s no wonder they can’t maintain a friendship now that the show is done.

There Was An Alternate Ending

Did you know that there was an alternate ending to the show? The ending we saw had Brody at Kristin Cavallari's house, begging for forgiveness, regretting that he ever left Cavallari. In the end, Cavallari left him at the airport, but then, of course, we see the pan out where Brody is really on a fake set. Everyone assumed that meant that the whole show was fake, of course. But there was an alternate ending that they were going to air instead, and it showed Brody returning to his mystery girlfriend's house and that the girlfriend turned out to be Lauren Conrad, who Cavallari despised. Though now we also know that the Brody and Lauren relationship was all fake anyway, so it wasn’t quite the scandal that we thought it was.

No One Was Friends

The Hills portrayed the show as if it was about Lauren and all the friends that she had while in Los Angeles. But the cast members have not kept in touch, and many of them are not friends. It turns out they weren't friends before the show and none of them really kept in touch afterward. Audrina Partridge revealed to People magazine “that the girls have gone their separate ways. We weren't all friends before The Hills, and we were kind of friends for the show." Ouch! Well, it doesn’t look like Lauren Conrad really cares and is off living a happy and glamorous life. Sometimes, things work out just the way they're supposed to and besides, who needs fake people in their life anyway?
