It’s no secret that everyone has told a fib or two in their life. But for a celebrity, telling a lie can either help or drastically hurt their career and their reputation. Take Kim Kardashian for example. Her constant lies about whether or not she’s gone under the knife regularly keeps her name in the tabloids. And no one can forget how her infamous tape with Ray-J “leaked” and made her the A-list star she is today.
From actors, politicians, to former presidents, lying about a certain aspect of your life can definitely make or break you. We can’t forget about former View host Star Jones, whose drastic weight loss literally melted in front of our eyes. How did she lose all that weight so quickly? Sadly, she lost a ton of her fans after she kept her gastric bypass surgery a secret and even had to step down as a host from the daytime talk show.
This list of photos that prove celebs were lying may surprise you. Did you know that Beyonce never writes her own songs? We bet that was a shocker to you. Or, did you know that The White Stripes members, Meg and Jack White, have been lying to us all these years? These 15 celebrities have been caught in their white lies, and it has caused many of their reputations to be dismantled.
15. Bill Clinton – His Affair With The Former Intern
Former president Bill Clinton was the second president of the United States to ever be impeached on two charges—one of perjury and one of obstruction of justice. Clinton had lied about his affair with his former intern, Monica Lewinsky, when he famously declared at a January 1998 press conference, “I did not have s*xual relations with that woman.” However, seven months later, Lewinsky told a supposed confidant named Linda Tripp that she had in her possession a blue dress from Gap that had a very important “stain” which would ultimately catch Clinton in his lie. Clinton had to admit in a grand jury testimony that he did have an inappropriate relationship with the intern. He was impeached but later acquitted.
14. Lindsay Lohan – Lied To Police About Driving Incident
Lindsay Lohan was the lovable kid actress from movies like The Parent Trap and Freaky Friday, but she gained way more media attention when she got older after admitting to having a drug and alcohol problem and going to rehab a multitude of times. Lohan is no stranger to lying, and after getting into a car accident on the Pacific Coast Highway in 2012, Lohan told the police she wasn’t the one driving since she was on probation. The star initially said that her assistant was behind the wheel, but it didn’t all add up and Lohan was charged with lying to the police. The star’s lie got her an added two years on her probation, community service, and more rehab.
13. Star Jones – Lied About Weight Loss To Her Loyal Fans
Star Jones admitted that she was morbidly obese when her weight climbed to over 300 pounds. However, she was on a mission to improve her lifestyle, and her fans on The View supported her 100 percent. At first, Jones credited her weight loss (losing 106 pounds in three years) to diet and exercise and denied again and again that she underwent gastric bypass surgery. Her drastic weight loss wasn’t fooling anyone, and in 2007, she stated in an essay for Glamour that she did have the procedure. Her fans were turned off that she would lie to them about her weight loss journey and even her pal and View co-host, Barbara Walters, admitted that she was uncomfortable with keeping Jones’ secret from her fans and the people around them.
12. Shania Twain – Reveled In Fake Native American Background
Shania Twain is one of the most recognized and cherished country stars in the business, so it was quite shocking when she lied about her background to all of her fans. She took pleasure in telling people that she was of Native American descent and said that Jerry Twain, an Ojibway Native American, was her father. Jerry was actually a stepfather, and her real father, Clarence Edwards, was of French and Irish descent, and her mother was also of Irish descent. Her real name isn’t even Shania. It’s actually Eileen Regina Edwards. She admitted in the late 90’s the truth about not really being of Native American background, stating, “I don’t know how much Indian blood I actually have in me, but as the adopted daughter of my father Jerry, I became legally registered as 50 percent North American Indian.”
11. Jack And Meg White – Fooled Us Into Thinking They Were Brother And Sister
The White Stripes band members, Jack and Meg White, easily fooled everyone by thinking they were brother and sister, and they did a great job in keeping it that way. They do eerily look alike. However, did you know that they were actually married to one another? Even though there were papers of their 1996 marriage license found in 2001, they both swore that they were siblings. Finally, Jack White admitted the truth in a Rolling Stone interview in 2005 that they were married and not brother and sister. He said, “When they’re brother and sister, you go ‘Oh, that’s interesting,’” he said, adding, “You care more about the music, not the relationship.” The two did get a divorce, but they did completely fool us in their lie.
10. Beyonce – Never Writes Her Own Songs
Beyonce may be one of the greatest talents in Hollywood, but she has nothing to do with actually writing the top chart hits she contributes her voice to. But there have been years of controversy over whether Beyonce writes her own songs. She was caught lying about writing songs while she was with Destiny’s Child. And when her coveted album, Lemonade, came out, there were a whopping 72 writers on the album, including James Blake, The Weeknd, Jack White, and even Led Zeppelin. In her one song, “Hold Up,” there are 15 writers alone. But one thing that Beyonce does do is she adds her own name on every track, claiming she contributed in some sort of way, but we all know she really doesn’t. So just stick to being an entertainer Beyonce and let the writers get some sort of credit for those millions of dollars you earn.
9. Brian Williams – Made Up War Story
On February 4, 2015, NBC Nightly News reporter Brian Williams recanted an Iraq story he had told the broadcast back in 2003 that he had been on a military helicopter that had been forced down after being hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. Williams was heavily scrutinized for lying about the story. In fact, veterans who were involved in the incident said that it never happened, and Williams had to apologize on the air and stated that he didn’t really remember what actually happened. There have also been some other significant incidents regarding Williams lying. He had made some serious statements regarding being hit by rockets fired from Lebanon by Hezbollah while flying his helicopter and witnessing a suicide at the New Orleans Superdome following the Hurricane Katrina aftermath.
8. Britney Spears – Reputation As A Good Girl Shattered By Ex Justin Timberlake
When Britney Spears came into the spotlight with songs like “Hit Me Baby One More Time” and “Crazy,” she maintained a sexy vibe while still keeping a good girl attitude. She was able to preserve that image for a while, and for some creepy reason, people gave her the appearance of “America’s Hottest Virgin,” which was actually working for her and was the reason she was earning her millions. There was even a time when Spears had to lie to the press that she had never done anything in-between the sheets to keep her image. However, her ex, Justin Timberlake, wasn’t going to let her keep that image for too long. Still distraught over their breakup, Timberlake revealed that Britney’s untouched reputation was all a lie. He admitted that the two got down and dirty and revealed a lot more than we thought of the pristine Britney.
7. Milli Vanilli – Famously Discovered To Have Never Sung Any Of Their Songs
Everyone knows the story behind Milli Vanilli, but we had to put them on this list because their story is just too good to not mention. Milli Vanilli was made up of Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan, who came out with popular hits like “Girl You Know It’s True.” The only problem was that the two were frauds and the duo came clean in the early 90’s claiming that they didn’t sing any of the songs that were on their album. They even won a Grammy for Best New Artist and had to give it back! The two men confessed that they were hired by German music producer Frank Farian to front the band, but other people sang all the songs. Soon after this discovery, Milli Vanilli just went downhill, and in 1997, Pilaus died from suspected alcohol poisoning and prescription drug overdose.
6. Chris Brown – Lies On National Television About Being Abusive
We were all stunned and shocked after a photo of Rihanna’s beaten and bruised face popped up on the Internet. After it was discovered that Chris Brown had physically abused her, the singer earned the nickname “bully” and plenty of others we just can’t say here. Brown appeared on Larry King in 2009 to save his name, apologize for his horrendous acts towards his ex, and to deny any other violent acts, but it was all just a lie. It was later revealed that he’s done a lot more than the terrible things to Rihanna. In fact, his ex, Karrueche Tran, admitted that Brown pushed her down the stairs and made numerous death threats to her. Can we just agree that Chris Brown sucks as a person and needs help ASAP?
5. James Frey – More Like A Million Little Lies
Author James Frey’s A Million Little Pieces, which was a memoir about drug addiction and recovery, was such a big hit it topped the New York Times bestsellers list and even made on Oprah Winfrey’s Book Club. Any book that makes Oprah’s list becomes a huge seller, but the only problem was that the book turned out to be a total lie. Frey admitted that he has made the entire memoir up. His career ended up shattering into a million little pieces instead. He even came clean about the book on Oprah in January of 2006. He should know better than messing with the one and only Oprah Winfrey.
4. Tyga – Never Really Grew Up In The Streets Of Compton
Oh, Tyga, the only thing that really made your career was dating Kylie Jenner. Now that the relationship is over, Tyga is losing his rapper status and his lies are coming out one by one. Tyga had all of his fans (whoever they may be) fooled when he claimed that he grew up in Compton. If he was trying to sound tough, it didn’t quite work for him either way. He was called out for his lie after a video surfaced of him telling a game show host that he grew up in the wealthy part of the Valley with his parents and a Range Rover. He tried to cover up the truth by saying he only stayed in the Valley for a brief period of time and that his roots in the Valley were real, but you’re not fooling anyone, Tyga.
3. Tonya Harding – Tears Weren’t Fooling Anyone On Attack On Nancy Kerrigan
The best of the best may not have trained Tonya Harding when it came to figure skating, but she was actually pretty talented on the ice. She was the first American woman to complete a triple axel in a competition, which is a big deal. But for some reason, her jealousy towards figure skater Nancy Kerrigan got the best of her. Tonya reportedly hired a hitman to break her rival’s legs because she was sick of being the underdog. A man had swung a baton and connected about an inch above Kerrigan’s right knee. Thankfully, she was able to compete in the Olympics and win the bronze, while Harding finished eighth. Harding lied and said she had nothing to do with the hit, but everyone knew she played a role in it.
2. Martha Stewart – Lied About A Shady Stock Sale
Martha Stewart is a great businesswoman, but she found herself in deep waters with the law when she tried to cover up a stock deal in 2001. Stewart was found guilty on four counts of obstructing justice and lying to investigators about her sale of stock. She spent five months in federal prison and five months of house arrest for lying about the stock sale. Of course, being the savvy businesswoman that she is known to be, she already made a full comeback and even hangs out with Snoop Dogg from time to time.
1. Brooks Ayers – Lied About Having Cancer On The Real Housewives Of Orange County
The Real Housewives of Orange County can get really dramatic and intense, especially if you put a bunch of ladies who despise each other in a room for a long period of time. However, it was cast member Vicki Gunvalson’s former partner, Brooks Ayers, that really made everyone mad when he lied about being diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Even Vicki fell for his lie and that resulted in losing many friendships with the other cast mates. While it made for great television, we can’t believe Ayers would go as far as fake diagnose himself and how he received treatments at the City of Hope hospital. Ayers even forged hospital bills to give to the E! Network! What was even the point in faking cancer for Brooks?
