Sophie Turner has grown up before our eyes. She was only 13-years-old when she landed her role as Sansa Stark on the hit HBO series, Game of Thrones. Back then, she played a spoiled and naïve character. She was so ready to be married to Joffrey, an overindulged and willful soon-to-be-king brat. She had to learn the hard way Joffrey’s real character. In real life, Sophie has matured too; although, she didn’t have to suffer as Sansa has. There’s no Joffrey or Ramsay Bolton in her real life.
Because life imitates art and vice-versa, Sophie has grown up fierce and sophisticated. She’s learned some lessons along the way (probably a lot from her character Sansa), and her development has been significant and noteworthy. From charitable giving to more mature style choices, Sophie isn’t that little girl anymore. She’s an adult, and it’s time the world stood up and took notice.
Not only is she beautiful and sexy, she’s also smart and a hard worker. She’s an outspoken activist and she’s admitted to working long days, sometimes 13 long hours. “I never think of my days as long,” Turner told Self magazine about her grueling schedule working on X-Men: Apocalypse. “I’d be in makeup from 5 a.m. until 7 a.m. But it was much crazier for the people who were blue!” Wow, so she’s humble too?
Overall, Sophie is all grown up. She’s a woman now, and she’s full of grace and poise. She’s not all goodie-goodie either; she knows how to have fun, but she’s not a train wreck either. She’s got it all going on, and it will be interesting to see where her career leads her after GoT ends.
16 She’s Got a Tattoo
You’ve got to be a grown up to get ink, and Sophie chose a mature light-red tattoo (one that would be easy to cover-up for acting gigs). The tattoo matches the one her costar, Maisie Williams, got. They had the date “07.08.09” tattooed on the inside of their arms just below the elbow joint. The date has special meaning for the girls.
“We’ve always kind of said we wanted matching tattoos,” Sophie said to E! They considered getting wolves, but opted for the date inside. The date is the day they both landed roles on GoT, and officially became on-screen sisters. The girls weren’t sure if their characters would make it to the end of the series, so the time was right for the tattoo.
15 She’s Like A Big Sister To Costar Maisie Williams
Maisie Williams feels scared at award shows, but more confident when fictional big sister, Sophie Turner is there. The girls plays sisters on GoT, but it’s been some time before their characters have reconnected. In real life, they’re connected at the hip. On an episode of This Morning, Maisie told the hosts that she considers Sophie her sister.
“It was so wonderful to have someone my age plucked out from normality into this world…It’s really lovely to have someone to hold my hand through this. She’s like my big sister.”
Although the girls look like there’s quite an age difference between them, Sophie is barely a year older than Maisie. They’re frequently spotted on the red carpet together because they’ve forged a friendship, which is incredibly mature if you think about it.
14 She’s Dating In Hollywood
She’s looking for love, and currently she’s finding it with Joe Jonas. Sophie has also been connected to James McVey, and is rumored to have had relationships with Tye Sheridan and Thomas Mann.
To be in a committed relationship, one must be mature. She also shows her maturity by remaining mum about her relationships. She’s not using her intimate relationships to gain media attention, which is great for those of us who are sick of publicity seeking stars flaunting their romances for gain.
She’s also totally open to more explicit intimate scenes for her character on GoT. “In the GoT universe, I think she’s going to have to swing the other – because the men thing isn’t working for her,” she told Entertainment Weekly about her character Sansa.
13 She Parties A Lot
Grown up girls blow off steam, and that’s exactly what Sophie does. At Comic Con, she admitted that the cast throws “death parties” for fallen characters. They head down to a bar near where they film. “I get upset with every death,” the highly sensitive actress admitted. “But now it’s become kind of like the normal thing, that we can no longer have the death parties for [cast members whose characters are killed off] because otherwise we’re spending too much money now buying people drinks.”
She also shows up for movie premier parties, awards show after-parties, and more. Also at San Diego Comic Con, she admitted she and the cast each downed a vodka shot before hitting the panel stage. It doesn’t seem she’ll head the way of other child stars, such as Lindsay Lohan, because even with some alcohol in her system, she is poised and graceful.
12 She Is Stunning On The Red Carpet
Back in the day, Sophie’s style was unrefined. She was still quite young in 2009 (just 13 years old), but each year she has become more strikingly beautiful and a great deal more fashionable. She knows how to work the red carpet.
She frequently walks the carpet in more mature and stunning gowns. She turns heads in edgy ensembles, and isn’t afraid to bare a little skin for the paparazzi cameras. Despite oozing sex appeal, her looks are as glamorous as Old Hollywood was. Her looks are sophisticated and refined, which is great for an up-and-coming actress who wants to be taken seriously.
This picture was taken at The Venice Film Festival. She’s wearing a Yanina Couture dress, and was there for the premier of Hacksaw Ridge. It marks the first official time Sophie faced paparazzi cameras head-on with her new look, which she announced on Instagram. Although she’d been photographed as a blonde before, this was the first time she really showed of her makeover.
11 She’s Got A Great Body And She Isn’t Afraid To Show It
When cast as Jean Grey for X-Men: Apocalypse, Sophie knew she needed to get in shape and fast. She already had a great body, but it wasn’t as toned as it needed to be to play a superhero. On set, she frequently worked 13-hours a day, and a full hour of that was set aside for exercise with a personal trainer.
Her trainer worked her hard. She did cardio, lifted kettlebells, did hill sprints, and worked with resistant bands. “She’s strong,” her trainer told Self magazine. “I just had to make sure she didn’t get bored, so I devised tricks.” Those tricks included teaching her complex boxing combos and taking her out of the gym to work out on the streets of London.
10 Her New Hair Color Shows Off A More Mature Look
Sophie isn’t a natural redhead; although, she pulls off the look flawlessly. She’s a natural blonde, which is exactly why her newly dyed tresses help her to look more mature. Going back to a natural hair color, or nearer to natural, helps Sophie achieve a more adult look. It doesn’t hurt that it’s also very sexy.
Sophie’s had to sport red hair since 2009 to match her on-screen mom, Catelyn Stark (played by Michelle Fairley). The two women look a lot alike when their hair and makeup are done just right. Presumably they’ve wrapped up filming GoT, and Sophie is free to dye her tresses whatever color she wants. This newfound freedom is yet another testament that she’s all grown up.
8 She’s Not Afraid To Be Herself
She’s not like other girls in Hollywood. The porcelain skinned ginger has wild curls and freckles, but would you believe her red hair isn’t real? In reality, Sophie is a natural blonde. Recently, she’s allowed her natural locks to grow out, but she always embraced her red curls too. She’s not afraid to rock whatever look she’s given, and she was proud even with prominent curls.
When she was younger, she had some serious body issues. She wasn’t comfortable in her skin, nor was she comfortable with the spotlight centered on the changes she was going through. You have to remember she was a teenager entering puberty when the show started, and she hated seeing herself on screen. “I really dislike watching myself on screen,” she said. “I am very insecure about my acting…I have to sit in another room to my parents when they watch it.”
7 She’s Learned How To Keep Us Guessing
Sophie has learned how to keep us guessing, which is to say she’s learned how to keep us interested in the characters she plays. Seasoned actors drop hints that ensure people tune into their work, but they never give away the whole story. Sophie has matured enough to walk this tightrope with grace. She can hint where Sansa’s story is heading, but she wouldn’t disappoint producers and her cast mates by spoiling what happens.
When HBO confirmed there are only two seasons of GoT left, Sophie used the moment to toy with Variety readers. She said, “It’s quite sad…We’ve got one more season… well, not all of us.” The upcoming season promises to be an interesting one with imminent deaths on the horizon. Hopefully it’s not Sophie’s character who dies because I really want to see she and Jon Snow take back the north, but if that can’t happen it would be awesome to see she and Daenerys join forces in Westeros.
6 She’s A Philanthropist
Sophie has a charitable spirit. Kieran was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare soft tissue cancer. A fan of Game of Thrones, he told the giving program Rays of Sunshine that his greatest wish was to meet the woman who plays Sansa on his favorite show. Kieran and his family took a trip to London and met Sophie at a café. She had snacks and tea with the boy and his family, and she lovingly answered all of his questions about the show.
“It was an absolute privilege to meet Kieran and help Rays of Sunshine grant his wish. He is such an inspirational teenager, what with his fundraising and training to become a Paralympian. It was a pleasure for me to spend time getting to know him and we had lots of fun chatting about Game of Thrones.”
5 Pretty In Blue
Sophie is an amazing beauty; one of those you don’t see very often. Her blue eyes are piercing, her features soft, and her body is in incredible shape. You know she’s all grown up, not just because she’s in her 20s now, but also because she has sex appeal. Though she’s admitted to being self-critical after growing up in the public eye, Sophie has since shed her insecurity and now seems very comfortable in front of the camera.
“From 16 to when I turned 19, they were quite hard years,” she told InStyle magazine. “You’re in the prime of puberty; your body is changing, your face is changing…when people are printing photos of your bad skin, that’s really difficult.”
4 She’s A Leading Lady And Scoring More Adult Roles
Sophie has two new movies coming out in 2017: Berlin, I Love You and Huntsville. Berlin is an anthology film, a la New York, I Love You and Paris, Je T’aime. Sophie stars in a segment alongside another HBO star, Jack Huston of Boardwalk Empire fame. These films are often critically acclaimed for their content, and this one is directed by Oscar nominated Belgium director, Tom van Avermaet. For Sophie, this is a very prestigious commitment.
In Huntsville, Sophie plays a high school student who has entered a questionable relationship with a much older man. The movie stars Dylan McDermott as Hank, the much older man she is involved with. The film is described on IMDb as “Hank, a solitary man living a dull existence in a sleepy, Southern town raises eyebrows when he develops a questionable relationship with Josie, a recently transplanted high school student.”
3 She’s Old Hollywood Glamorous
At the SAG Awards, Sophie stunned in an all red, form fitting gown. Her cherry red lips and arched eyebrows tied the look together. She oozes old Hollywood glamour with a plunging neckline and a slit so high it threatened to show us more than she’d bargained for. Sophie was feeling good at the award ceremony because she, and the rest of the Game of Thrones cast, were nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
Unfortunately, Sophie and the rest of the class lost the award to the cast of Stranger Things. Hey, just being nominated is cool, right? The young starlet does have many awards for her role on GoT, including an Empire Hero Award, Glamour Award, and the Huading Award for Best Global Actress. She’ll probably land herself a Kids Choice Award for her role in X-Men: Apocalypse later this year too. It’s not a SAG Award, but I have faith she’ll get there. She’s very talented.
2 She’s Got Her Very Own Style
Sophie is rapidly becoming a style icon both in her homeland England and here in the United States. On the streets, you’ll often see her photographed in midriff exposing tops, high waisted jeans, and a leather jacket over a tank top. Yet, she’s also a stunner on the red carpet. The girl knows how to wear clothes. In this photo, she’s posing for Southern Style Magazine, and proving she can really pull off any look. Who else could look this stunning in mismatched colors and prints?
She’s also a model for UK clothing retailer, Karen Millen. The fashion brand is very high end, and perfect for Sophie who mixes street style with uptown fashion. She is both downtown and uptown, and she can pull it off. “The London-focused KM campaign is a culmination of a year of transformation for Karen Millen,” says a spokesperson for the brand. “And, Sophie Turner, a rising international star, embodies the brand.”
1 She Goes Deep Into Her Role As Sansa Stark
The Sansa Stark/Ramsay Bolton rape scene sparked outrage and controversy. Fans of Game of Thrones were triggered by the scene. There was a general feeling that Sansa didn’t deserve the treatment after all she’d been through. This was also yet another departure from the source material. In the book, it isn’t Sansa who marries Ramsay. It’s Jeyne Poole pretending to be Arya Stark who is repeatedly raped and tortured by the sadistic Ramsay Bolton.
Sophie sunk her teeth into the role, which is likely why it led to such a fallout of controversy. She embraced the pain her character was feeling, and horrified audiences with the depth she gave to the role. About the role, Sophie told Time Magazine, “To have to do a really intense scene, like the rape scene last season, we couldn’t really sleep beforehand, Iwan and I…During the day, it was a bit awkward. But afterwards you just go to Safe Haven, which is the hotel bar, and sort yourselves out.” The actress also defends the scene, and has suggested that it was necessary for Sansa’s character development.
