“I was attempting my first try at monogamy – which was not really in my nature at the time – and I wasn’t able to do it” he once told Haute Living magazine back in September 2014. “It made me examine how I was living my life. That led to me getting sober, which led to me changing my life – giving me everything I now have.”
“You want to get sober for your parents, you want to get sober for your job, you want to get sober for the cops, and you want to get sober to protect your image. A lot of good reasons, by the way, but unfortunately, the only thing that works is that you have to want to get sober for you.”

Can you imagine spending your days addicted to cocaine, heroin and alcohol? For supermodel Gia Carangi this was her reality and the future seemed bleak.
Unfortunately things only got worse when she was diagnosed with HIV. She later passed away in 1996 whilst still facing her demons and fighting her battle with drug addiction.
Gia graced glamourous magazine covers such as Cosmopolitan and Vogue and her first ever major modelling job was with Versace. She went on to model for fashion greats such as Arthur Elgort, Helmut Newton and Francesco Scavullo.

6 Russell Brand
We all know Russell Brand as an actor, an author, a comedian and an activist. He has never shied away from controversy and we soon got to know Russell the addict.
“Drugs and alcohol are not my problem, reality is my problem, drugs and alcohol is my solution. If this seems odd to you it is because you are not an alcoholic or a drug addict. You are likely one of the 90% of people who can drink and use drugs safely. I have friends who can smoke weed, swill gin, even do crack and then merrily get on with their lives. For me, this is not an option. I will relinquish all else to ride that buzz to oblivion. Even if it began as a timid glass of chardonnay on a ponce’s yacht, it would end with me necking the bottle, swimming to shore and sprinting to Bethnal Green in search of a crack house. I look to drugs and booze to fill up a hole in me; unchecked, the call of the wild is too strong.”
5 Robert Downey Jr.
It might shock you to hear that beloved Hollywood actor, Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. first tried drugs at the tender age of just 6. He escaped unscathed but sure enough was later arrested in 1996 when he faced his first drug-related arrest. This is when things began to spiral out of control for the budding actor and ABC then reported he was arrested for heroin, cocaine and crack as well as for having an unloaded gun in his car.
All’s well that ends well though as Robert Downey Jr. pulled off one of the most inspiring comebacks in history and beat his addiction. Today he has 15 years of sobriety under his belt and makes the headlines for all the right reasons.
4 Brad Pitt
Sure, it isn’t a trade secret that Brad Pitt likes to light up at 4:20 pm but his love for weed once spiraled out of control and he joined a long list of celebs in addiction.
It’s been rumoured that the veteran actor once dished out $1500 worth of bongs to the cast and crew on one of his sets. Guess his secret love for marijuana wasn’t so secret after all. These days the newly divorced star has no wish to “wake and bake” as they say and prefers to spend his afternoons with his children.
“I spent years f––ing off,” Pitt once told Esquire magazine. “But then I got burnt out and felt that I was wasting my opportunity. It was a conscious change. This was about a decade ago.”
He added “It was an epiphany – a decision not to squander my opportunities. It was a feeling of get up. Because otherwise, what’s the point?”
3 Zac Efron
The High School Musical shocked the world in 2013 when he entered rehab and now the cat is out the bag as Zac Efron admitted to both alcohol and substance abuse.
He first entered rehab on the quiet but soon the secret was out and everyone knew of his dark past and constant struggle with addiction. It’s rumoured that he was addicted to cocaine as well but nothing has been confirmed from the Efron team to verify this.
He seems to be doing well in his recovery, as he revealed in a recent TV interview: "I'm in the best place I've ever been. I've never been this happy before and I'm extraordinarily grateful for these guys and to be here promoting this movie. Things are good so thank you for asking."
During her days as a band member for Wild Orchid, Fergie developed an addiction to ecstasy. The addiction soon worsened and she later became addicted to crystal meth which began the roller-coaster ride the young pop star found herself a part of. Fergie once said that quitting meth was the hardest thing she has ever done and we can’t help but feel for her.
The Black Eyed Peas star told Oprah Winfrey she was so messed up from her addiction to crystal meth that she believed police were tracking her every move. The candid interview was aired on Oprah's Next Chapter and she went on to say 'I got into a scene. I started going out and taking ecstasy. From ecstasy it went to crystal meth. With any drugs, everything is great at the beginning, and then slowly your life starts to spiral down. I was 90 pounds at one point.'
She said: 'I started getting really paranoid. So I went one day into this church and I thought that the FBI and the SWAT teams were outside the church...so I had a conversation with God...and I said, "Alright, if I go out there and the FBI and the SWAT team's not out there, then it's the drugs and I'm stopping."
"...I went outside of the church...and there was no SWAT team, there was no FBI, just me and God. And I kept my promise. That day. That was it."
1 Angelina Jolie
Angelina Jolie paid a visit to rehab and had a shocking history of abuse with drugs. The Oscar-winning actress and humanitarian looks nothing like the drugged up wanna-be actress we once saw in the past. Convicted drug dealer Franklin Meyer claimed he shot 16 minutes of footage with Jolie’s consent in 1999 after she called him round to her Manhattan home to re-supply her with heroin and cocaine. Since then several videos and stills have made it onto the internet damaging the squeaky clean image the glamorous actress once had.
Angelina later confessed to having done “just about every drug possible,” even admitting to using cocaine, heroin, Ecstasy, LSD, and other drugs in a 1998 interview.
These days the Oscar-winning actress is a proud mother of six and has been sober for years and is deeply passionate about her work as an humanitarian. She went on to give up her unhealthy ways and is even a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN.
