The Disney princesses are known for being young, beautiful, animal-loving, romantic, and always on the search to find their prince charming and live happily ever after. So to sum it up, they are known for being innocent— as they should be, since their movies are generally made for children. But thanks to some very talented and creative minds out there, the Disney princesses have been reimagined in countless different ways. This list will focus on the Disney princesses that are not so innocent.
People all around the world grew up loving the princesses, admiring them and wanting to be just like them. Now, we will be entertained by them once more, in a very different way. Cinderella, Belle, Ariel, Pocahontas, Mulan, Jasmine, Snow White, Rapunzel, Aurora, Merida, and Tiana are the 11 official Disney princesses, and they, along with four more Disney ladies that most feel should be princesses, are all very lovely young ladies with a lot to offer their individual worlds, kingdoms, and stories. Here, in the present day, they live on in the hearts of the adults who grew up alongside them, and who are raising their children to love them, as well.
But let's take a break from the Disney princesses we know so well and look at them from a different perspective. The girls are supposed to be teenagers in the movies, so let's imagine them a bit older, and far from the innocent young ladies they have a reputation for being, Here are 15 imaginative creations of the Disney princesses looking less than innocent, but still clearly themselves the way we know and love them.
15 Snow White
Snow White is the youngest of the Disney princesses (official or otherwise), and so it's a bit surprising that out of all of them, she seems to have the most fan art that is far from innocent. In the movie Snow White, she was only 14 years old, hardly older than a middle-schooler. Snow White, as we know, is the "fairest of them all," known for her fair skin, short dark hair in which she wears a ribbon, red lips, piercing blue eyes, and for taking a bite of that tempting, juicy red apple. She wears a yellow skirt, and a blue and red corset top. With her high, girlish speaking and singing voice, over-the-top innocence, and easy communication with animals, she seems as young as she is actually supposed to be. Perhaps that is why so many people seem just as tempted to create risqué DeviantArt of Snow White as she was, herself, to bite into that poisonous apple.
14 Aurora/Sleeping Beauty
Princess Aurora, also known as Sleeping Beauty, is one of the original Disney princesses, from the 1959 movie Sleeping Beauty. She is easily recognized by her long blonde hair that is curled at the ends, light purple eyes, and she was designed to look more mature than some of the princesses like Snow White or Cinderella, despite still only being 16 years old. The fan artists for DeviantArt got it right when they created these images of the princess above. They are both very obviously Sleeping Beauty, and look just like her. Raised by the three fairy godmothers Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather, Princess Aurora is sweet, kind, down-to-earth, and a lover of animals. Basically, she is the definition of a classic, official Disney princess.
Like Elsa, Princess Jasmine is among the most visually appealing princesses — and yes, she is actually an official princess. However, it should be noted that one of the requirements for a Disney girl to be an official princess is that they do not appear primarily in a sequel. Well, we all know that Jasmine was first seen in Aladdin, and then she was a major character in The Return of Jafar, and then Aladdin and The King of Thieves. Finally, there was a television series that they were all in (Aladdin, Genie, Jasmine, Abu, Raja, etc.). Jasmine was the sixth official Disney princess. She always looks stunning in her aqua-coloured crop top, genie pants, and long black hair. With big brown eyes and a beautiful, exotic face, it's no wonder the "street rat" Aladdin fell in love with her, as did audiences everywhere. Really, there was little to be done with fan art to make her less innocent — but people definitely gave it a go!
Princess Ariel was the youngest daughter of King Triton and the star of The Little Mermaid (which also had sequels). She was 16 years old in the movie and a total troublemaker. She was the only red-headed princess for a long time before Merida came along in 2012. But that fiery hair perfectly matched Ariel's fiery personality. She went after what she wanted, no matter the cost. A Disney favorite, Ariel's "outfit" was not much more conservative than Jasmine's. It consisted of a purple seashell top and that's it, since the bottom half of her body was a fish tail. Later in the movie when she gains legs, she is seen wearing a sparkling, light blue dress. Both less than innocent outfits are shown above.
Belle's name literally translates from French into "beautiful," so it's fitting that she was the main star of Beauty and the Beast, which before it was a Disney movie was a French folktale. Belle is quieter and more unassuming than many of the other princesses. She is every bit as tough, but does not get fired up as easily, although she readily stands up for what she believes in. At the age of 17, she is a book worm and lives in a small village in France with her quirky old father. Her designated Disney princess colour is yellow, as she is most famous for wearing the yellow ball gown she dances with the Beast. Belle is of course gorgeous as a "younger-looking" cartoon character, or as the more grown-up versions we see above.
Mulan is one of the newer Disney princesses, compared to some of the classic or original ones. The movie Mulan came out in 1998, and is about the titular character. She is the Chinese daughter of an army man, and goes undercover in the army as a boy to save him from certain death. In the process, she becomes one of China's greatest heroines. Like all of the other princesses, Mulan is beautiful, kind, gentle, and strong-willed. She does what is right, and shows her bravery time and time again. Mulan falls in the middle of the pack of princesses when it comes to her age, as she is supposed to be 16 years old. The story of Mulan was based on the fifth-century Chinese poem called Ballad of Mulan, which was written to show gender equality. Mulan became a legendary figure in China over the next few centuries, and no one knows if she was real or just fictional.
It may surprise many people to know that the stars of Frozen, Elsa and her sister Anna, are not official Disney princesses. There are certain requirements of a character in a Disney movie to be a princess, but in the case of Elsa and Anna, their franchise was so successful they did not need the official label, according to official Disney websites. There are just 11 "real" princesses, and that number does not include Elsa or Anna. But Snow Queen Elsa, for one, is one of the most reimagined Disney girls. There is fan art of her everywhere, and when it comes to die-hard Disney enthusiasts of the male gender, she is generally considered to be one of the hottest, if not the hottest Disney lady. With her big blue eyes, long blonde braid, and glittering icy-blue gown, it's easy to see why. Plus, she is 21 in the movie, so it's not as bad as if she were just 14, like the youngest Disney princess, Snow White.
When people think of Disney princesses, or sometimes just Disney in general, it is often Cinderella who comes to mind first. After all, it is her castle that is essentially the symbol of Disney World- and all of Disney, if you think about it. Cinderella is the tale of Ella, who lives with her stepmother and evil stepsisters who treat her like a scullery maid and have nicknamed her "Cinderella." After her father died, she worked tirelessly to please them. Her transformation from scullery maid to princess after meeting her fairy godmother and attending a ball where she literally meets Prince Charming is what people love most about her story. It is a rags-to-riches story. Cinderella overcomes challenges, rises above, and lives happily ever after. Talk about good karma. Plus, Cinderella is super pretty and most little girls want to be just like her. It's not hard to find creative versions of a not-so-innocent Cinderella.
Pocahontas is the story of 18-year-old Native American Disney princess Pocahontas, who falls in love with the forbidden John Smith. As a "savage," Pocahontas is not allowed to be with John Smith, just as he is not allowed to be with her, because he is not part of their Native tribe. Pocahontas' father is Chief Powhatan, and even though her mother died, she takes after her strength and determination, much like other Disney princesses who lost their mother. She is also the protagonist of Pocahontas II. The young woman is simply beautiful, with long, thick black hair, big brown eyes, olive skin, and a strong frame that is muscular from a lifetime of running through the forest. All of these physical attributes of Pocahontas' come across beautifully in the fan art that has been created of her, and that is especially true of the above DeviantArt, which is just gorgeous.
Rapunzel is the main character in the Disney movie Tangled, and she is not one of the 11 official Disney princesses, although many people feel that she should be. Tangled is actually based on the story of Rapunzel, an original fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm. Obviously, Rapunzel is most known for having long, golden blonde hair that has never been cut, hair that has grown far past her feet and trails behind her when she walks. As she has been kept in a tower for her entire life, she eventually uses her hair like a rope to escape. The astounding length of her hair also comes in handy when creating DeviantArt of the princess, because it is a unique but beautiful characteristic that makes it easy to create a sexy version of the 18-year-old; as you can see above, Rapunzel needs little to no clothing when she can simply be drawn wrapped up in her own golden locks.
Do you remember Megara, from Hercules? Nicknamed "Meg," she is the love interest of Hercules in the movie, and she eventually becomes his wife. Megara is known for her seductive smile, big red ponytail, and purple dress. She is unlike the other Disney leading ladies in that she is cynical and snarky. But to be honest, that is kind of refreshing. Megara is an unofficial princess in the world of Disney, but actually, she was a princess in Greek Mythology, and she married into royalty when she married Hercules on the animated television series. Her name comes from a town in the country of Greece. She is definitely not as well-known as Cinderella or even Rapunzel, but there are many people who feel that Megara should be classified as an official Disney princess. She is obviously beautiful enough, as the DeviantArtists who created the above images clearly also know.
Do you remember the Romani gypsy character Esmeralda from the 1996 movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame? While she is not an official Disney princess, she still earns a spot on this list! She is a street-smart woman who, like Belle of Beauty and the Beast, is able to look past a person's physical appearance, which she does with the hunchback, Quasimodo. She is beautiful in an exotic, bewitching sort of way, and in fact, was even accused of being a witch during the movie! She lives underneath the streets of Paris in the catacombs, and dances for coins. Men are constantly falling for Esmeralda, and she is known for her green eyes and hoop earrings. Fun fact: she was voiced by Demi Moore (for her speaking voice, not singing).
