With superhero films and television shows taking over Hollywood, more and more comic book-related productions are making their way to the screen. Today, there are hundreds of characters in superhero-related projects and if you include movies that revolve exclusively around the Marvel and DC Universe, the lineup of future releases is nearly a decade long. The popularity of these movies makes them almost guaranteed blockbuster successes and it stands to reason that more and more films will be released with more and more characters being brought to life.
What producers are learning is that some of the more popular characters are female. Wonder Woman is the latest superhero film to hit the screen and DC has a hit on its hands, seeing as the movie has already made some 225 million dollars since its release at the start of June. Why is the movie such a hit?
Outside of the fact that Wonder Woman is an iconic character, Gal Gadot was cast to play the lead role and, well, she’s extremely attractive. The movie reaches an audience that wants to see a female lead character kick butts, but it also reaches an audience who just want to see Gadot’s hotness on screen. She’s not the only female who’s had this effect on fans.
Here are 15 of the hottest women to ever play superhero roles. While they were super gorgeous in their character-related costumes, most of them on this list are dressed in something a little different. ‘Less is more’ was the motto of this list. Enjoy, and let us know who we might have missed.
15 Catwoman/Storm: Halle Berry
The movie Catwoman absolutely stunk but that doesn’t mean something good didn’t come out of putting Halle Berry in the Catwoman costume and parading her around for the select few fans who saw the box office flop. The movie made only $82 million after its $100 million budget.
Halle Berry plays Patience Phillips in Catwoman. She dies, but is eventually revived by Egyptian cats and given cat-like powers. She won a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress in 2005. But to her credit, she had the guts to show up to accept the award in person (making her even that much more attractive).
Berry is not a stranger to superhero films. She has also played the role of Storm in the X-Men movies and was also, at one point, a bond girl. As talented as she is, Berry hasn’t been highly regarded as an actor in any of those roles, but she doesn’t seem to shy about taking them. As you can see, she’s also extremely hot, so she often gets a pass for not being terribly memorable in an acting role (at least as far as superhero acting gigs are concerned).
14 Black Widow: Scarlett Johansson
Scarlett Johansson is one of the hottest actresses in Hollywood right now and the fact that she’s rocking The Avengers movies as Black Widow has provided her with a whole new legion of fans that think she’s about as awesome as it gets. Natasha Romanoff is an a*s-kicking spy who can race and pilot a motorcycle off a moving plane, take out 15 henchmen at once, compete with her male movie counterparts for screen time, and find the emotional side of her character all without looking taxed in the least. In fact, she never doesn’t look like a million bucks (that’s a lot of double negatives there).
Johansson has graced the cover of countless magazines and has also been featured in many spreads, including the above Vanity Fair shot. She continues to take roles where she’s a hit or miss in terms of the success and appeal of each movie. But, she’s going to stay one of the most gorgeous women in movies for a while.
13 Catwoman: Anne Hathaway
Hathaway’s portrayal of the morally void cat burglar, Selina Kyle, in The Dark Knight Rises is both intelligent and sexy. Not everyone loved her as the casting choice for the film, but she’s undeniably sexy in the suit. On top of that, she brings an air of mystery to the role that the other female actors who played Catwoman did not. Her attempt to become the character was a physical gauntlet for Hathaway who says she never worked harder at anything in her life. The role made her realize that the martial arts training she did was no joke.
Hathaway is up against some stiff competition for the sexiest Catwoman ever, but those who loved Christopher Nolan’s version of Batman will probably give her the nod. When you see her in her outfits, it’s difficult to argue against their way of thinking.
12 Elektra: Jennifer Garner
Hollywood actress and film producer, Jennifer Garner, had that girl-next-door type appeal. She first got our attention when she played CIA officer Sydney Bristow on Alias. As she got a bit older and after marrying Ben Affleck, she went from girl next door to total MILF. Somewhere in the middle of that transition, she played Marvel comics character Elektra.
As Elektra, Garner absolutely kicks butts and looks incredible doing it. She was one of the first female lead Marvel characters to really get noticed onscreen. No doubt, she set the tone for a number of the actresses who followed. Garner was forced to train non-stop to become sufficient in the use of her sai weapons which are a staple of the character. It makes her more attractive to guys everywhere that she can use them with such fire and passion. The sexiness she displayed as Elektra may never be matched.
11 Wonder Woman: Gal Gadot
She’s the newest female superhero s*x symbol, and perhaps the hottest. Wonder Woman has been a box office winner and Gadot has brought new life to the iconic character. Before her portrayal of Wonder Woman, she was known for her role in the Fast & Furious franchise and small parts in films like Date Night and Keeping Up With the Joneses.
To prepare for her role as DC’s most famous female superhero, Gadot received swordsmanship, Kung Fu, kickboxing, capoeira, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu training. It paid off as her performance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was hailed as one of the best parts of the film.
She has that international appeal being born in Rosh HaAyin, Israel but she’s taking next to no time at all creating a huge following nationally. She’s set to star in a variety of additional DC Universe movies and everyone seems pretty happy about it.
10 Harley Quinn: Margot Robbie
While Wonder Woman might be the most popular superhero out to destroy evil, Harley Quinn may be the most popular overall female comic book character ever. She’s not exactly bursting with kindness either.
In preparation for the role, Margot did a ton of research. She read a variety of online forums to try to understand the love for the character from the fans and she wanted to know what made Quinn tick. Really, there has to be something off for someone to be in love with the Joker. She read countless comic books and immersed herself in learning everything there was to know about the character.
Fans seemed to love the outfits in Suicide Squad and while her stand-alone movie seems to be far into the future, she’ll be appearing in other ensemble films.
9 Psylocke: Olivia Munn
Originally a television journalist, Olivia Munn is now one of the hottest female superhero actresses in the Marvel Universe. Comic book fans may first have gotten to know her when she appeared in the film X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) as Psylocke. She’ll soon be appearing in 2018 releases Ocean’s Eight and The Predator.
Olivia moved to LA to pursue a career in acting in 2004, and was quickly cast in a few small projects. She found her niche when taking over the co-hosting role on G4’s Attack of the Show. And for fans who are fond of her modeling work, she appeared in magazines like Maxim and Esquire. Famous NFL quarterback Aaron Rogers of the Green Bay Packers is a pretty big fan of her work as well. It’s hard to know how much more her character will be seen in future movies, but if Pyslocke’s appearance was brief, Munn did it justice.
8 Mystique: Rebecca Romijn
The Mystique character in the X-Men films was made extremely popular for one reason. And no, it wasn’t because of her myopic devotion to Magneto and hired muscle-type personality. That reason was Rebecca Romijn, who started modeling in 1991 and was featured numerous times as one of the world’s most beautiful women by publications such as Maxim, AskMen.com, and FHM.
In 2000, she took the role of Mystique in the X-Men films and appeared in a number of sequels afterward. Her character wasn’t terribly in-depth, but the costume consisted of nothing but blue makeup and some strategically placed prosthetics. Otherwise, she was completely nude. That alone made her a must-see part of the movie series.
In 2002, she also publicly admitted that in her early twenties, she explored her sexuality and wondered if she was interested in women. She did her homework to find out that she was straight. Is there anything she does that isn’t hot?
7 Mystique: Jennifer Lawrence
Unlike Rebecca Romijn’s version of the Mystique character, Jennifer Lawrence makes us feel sympathy for Mystique’s struggles. We realize in these new X-Men films that her character is less of a “bad guy” and more of a very tormented soul who never felt accepted and is searching for a place of belonging. Oh yeah, and she’s super hot too.
Once again, the blue paint and obvious curves are in full view to an audience of superhero fans who have made Lawrence a new s*x symbol now that Romijn is not really in the Hollywood picture any longer. It’s almost like Rebecca passed the ‘who’s the hottest’ torch and many will argue that Lawrence (who is a much more decorated actor) has exceeded the bar set by Romijn. Either way, Mystique is still one of the sexiest characters in the female superhero genre. Lawrence had some pretty big shoes to fill but did not let anyone down.
6 Silk Spectre II: Malin Akerman
With her stunning looks and kooky personality, Malin Akerman has carved out a huge career for herself in Hollywood. She currently stars on the hit show Billions and she’s had roles in films like 27 Dresses and The Heartbreak Kid. She describes herself as totally okay to be goofy and silly, and that makes her all the more attractive.
As for how she fits into the female superhero list, Malin played Silk Spectre II, the invincible warrior from the film Watchmen. The movie was not terribly well-received but has built somewhat of a cult following and Akerman got people voting for her as the hottest chick on the planet. Today, she’s probably been surpassed in that role (with all the new female characters onscreen these days), but she was still super hot in that black and yellow skintight costume.
5 Catwoman: Michelle Pfeiffer
Michelle Pfeiffer took the role of Catwoman (Selina Kyle) in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns (1992). She trained in martial arts and kickboxing, making her pretty kick a*s when it came to some of the stunt work. Even better, she turned the character into one of the most multi-layered onscreen interpretations of Catwoman ever. Unlike Halle Berry’s character, Pfeiffer’s Catwoman didn’t really gain any new powers (except nine lives). Her homemade catsuit was also a major plus.
Before taking the role, Pfeiffer was one of the hottest actresses in the ‘80s and early ‘90s. While perhaps an odd choice, she was the perfect fit for the character and in a movie full of odd casting choices, she was the hottest thing in superhero movies up until that time.
4 Invisible Woman: Jessica Alba
Alba takes the prize as perhaps both the hottest female superhero and the most successful woman on the list. Now an extremely accomplished business owner, her company was valued at over $1 billion. She appeared on the “Hot 100” section of Maxim, was the highest ranked of AskMen.com’s list of most desirable women, and topped FHM’s list one year later. By the time she was cast as Sue Storm (the Invisible Woman) in Fantastic Four, fans knew who she was and were ready to see her in the blue leather bodysuit that the character had been known to wear. Alba didn’t disappoint.
Today, she acts much less often, taking smaller roles, running her companies, and being a mom, but she doesn’t have to show up in anything else to still rank as one of the hottest female superheroes ever.
3 Scarlet Witch: Elizabeth Olsen
Elizabeth “Lizzie” Olsen is an American actress and the younger sister of the fashion mogul twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Most will probably tell you that when it comes to the gorgeous factor, Elizabeth Olsen got the goods.
She has proven herself to be one of sexiest and lighthearted females in movies and TV, but she’s taken a variety of roles in different types of films. She almost quit acting for a while, but fans everywhere are thankful she got back in and is now Scarlet Witch of the Marvel Universe. As far as up-and-coming actresses are concerned, she may be the highest ranked on our list. For her role in the critically acclaimed Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011), she was nominated for numerous awards, including the Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead.
2 Selene: Kate Beckinsale
There are few women as attractive as Kate Beckinsale and there are even fewer women as bad a*s as Selene, the character Beckinsale plays in Underworld. Beckinsale’s portrayal of Selene is one of the most believable comic/film characters to be played by a female actress to ever hit the big screen. As a former Vampire Death Dealer, she dedicated her life the extermination of Lycans since she first became a Vampire. The many film series has Selene fighting and wiping out a ton of different enemies, and she always looks fantastic doing so.
Her leather outfit is right up there as the sexiest female action hero stars in movie history. As each new movie gets released, fewer and fewer people seem to care about the storyline, but there will always be tons of fans lining up to see Beckinsale don the famous Selene outfit and tights.
1 Buffy: Sarah Michelle Gellar
After the movie was released years earlier, Sarah Michelle Gellar took over the role and played the Buffy Summers character to an entire generation of fans who wanted a female superhero to root for on television. Buffy is, in fact, less a superhero than she is a gifted fighter with some superhuman agility and strength when it comes to hunting vampires. Every once and a while, she’d fall in love with one of them too. Perhaps, that’s what made her so attractive. She was real.
Not only was Gellar beautiful, but she was very much like the fans who watched her on TV. She simply wanted to be a normal teenager and struggled with teenage issues. Sure, she killed a bunch of vampires and was a real tough chick, but that didn’t stop legions of fans from falling for her character and make her must-watch programming for a very long time. She took this role and made it last for years. That has to count for something.
