What will this year be defined as for entertainment? Will it be defined as the year in which horror movies continue their dominance at the box office? Is it the year that romantic comedies make a huge comeback? Or, will 2018 be the year in which independent films catch fire and become the new norm at the cinema? However the box office plays out this year, one thing attaches all of these films together. They all star A-listers.
What does it take to be an A-lister? Mainly, you need to have a hit movie under your belt. That’s easy to say for people like Tom Cruise. He’s one of the juggernauts of the film industry and continues to rake in money worldwide. Scarlett Johansson is also an A-lister who brings with her almost guaranteed success with each and every movie she stars in. While Cruise and Johansson both star in blockbusters, they are also popular for another reason. They’re hot.
Yes, Hollywood still markets their films with the lust of the audience in mind. If you get the chance to cast the hottest actor or actress in Hollywood, why wouldn’t you? After all, Hollywood is a business. And a business thrives when it’s making money. Steamy A-listers are prevalent in Hollywood. This list counts the steamiest A-Listers who have a movie coming out in 2018. Maybe this will be the year that all of these celebrities truly separate themselves from the pack. However the chips may fall, it’s certain that you’ll love watching them in 2018.
15 Jennifer Lawrence - Red Sparrow
Spies tend to be a big draw at the box office. With the likes of the James Bond franchise spanning well over 50 years and the resurgence of the Mission: Impossible series, it’s safe to say that spies are in. The only thing missing from the spy equation is females.
Most spy movies focus on a male protagonist. However, that has slowly changed over the years. Recently, Charlize Theron made waves when she starred in the fantastic spy film Atomic Blonde. Based on a graphic novel, the film blew audiences away. And audiences may be in for another treat in 2018.
Jennifer Lawrence, star of the Hunger Games franchise, appears as the lead female lead in Red Sparrow. With a harrowing plot and a sleek visual look, the film looks set to do great numbers at the box office. And it only gets boosted by both the talent and gorgeous looks of the lead actress.
14 Scarlett Johansson - Avengers: Infinity War
Ten years – it’s been ten years since the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was born. Emerging at a time when superhero movies were beginning to gain traction, Marvel took things to an entirely new level. Their unique vision of a shared universe captured the hearts and the imaginations of the audience. When The Avengers finally came to fruition, it wasn’t just a movie. It was an event.
First appearing in Iron Man 2, Scarlett Johansson's portrayal of Black Widow really became popular in the massive superhero team-up film. Known for her sultry looks, Johansson has owned the role and really made it her own. Recently, she’s been clamoring for a Black Widow solo film.
In 2018, Johansson once again dons the skin-tight suit as Black Widow in Avengers: Infinity War. One of the most highly anticipated movies of the past 20 years, the film looks to break box office records.
13 Dakota Johnson - Fifty Shades Freed
In 2011, a novel released that sent shockwaves throughout the world. No, it’s content wasn’t super violent, and it didn’t have any sort of political meaning. It wasn’t a symbol about life and, according to some critics, the book isn’t even written that well. Nonetheless, the book went on to capture a global audience and eventually spawned two more novels to create a trilogy. And why did it capture the audience’s attention? It was super steamy.
Fifty Shades of Grey became known as the steamiest romance novel to hit the mainstream. Its taboo topics both horrified and excited many readers. And the book series would make more waves when it was reported that it would be turned into a film series.
Capping off the trilogy of films in 2018, Fifty Shades Freed stars Dakota Johnson in some compromising situations. Indeed, the series translated the risqué content to the big screen. Audiences can’t seem to get enough of it, and 2018 once again sees a Fifty Shades title hit the cinema.
12 Natalie Portman - Annihilation
What do sci-fi space epic Star Wars Episode: The Phantom Menace and steamy thriller Black Swan have in common? At first glance, it may seem as if these two films are completely unrelated. After all, the former came out in 1999 and the latter in the 2010s. However, once you break down the cast, the answer becomes clear. The string that tethers these two films together is the presence of Natalie Portman.
Not tied to any one genre, Portman has spread her talent around. She’s a good fit in a lot of movies and she looks to continue this in 2018. Annihilation is slated to be a sci-fi film with strong elements of horror. Th plot revolves around Portman’s husband going into what looks like another plane of existence. Natalie and a team of people then travel into this place once his team goes missing. It looks like a great film full of scares, and you have a chance to check it out when it opens in February.
11 Jessica Chastain - X-Men: Dark Phoenix
Although she’s been around for a while, you may not have seen much of Chastain's early work. Mainly making her name in the indies, Jessica has gained popularity ever since her film debut in 2008. Then, in 2012, a film came out that helped propel several careers. That film is The Help, and one of those careers that ended up launching into the main stream was Chastain’s.
She earned a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Oscars, and her career quickly opened up. After several other successful films, the end of 2017 brought Molly’s Game. The film, written by Aaron Sorkin, is going to be up for numerous awards and Chastain could be one of those nominations.
In 2018, Jessica stars in a comic book property that is trying to get back on the right track with its mainline entries. X-Men: Dark Phoenix hits theaters in November 2018. With Chastain’s track record, she could help elevate the mainline X-Men series to the next level.
10 Zoe Saldana - Avengers: Infinity War
When the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise took off, a ton of praise was heaped upon the cast. Leading man Chris Pratt's talent shined through, Vin Diesel's voice work with only one word earned him acclaim, and an actress that had a decent history was thrust into the spotlight. You may have seen Zoe Saldana before, but you may not have known just exactly who she was.
Getting her start on Law & Order in a couple of episodes in 1999, Saldana slowly etched her way into Hollywood’s more desired roles. She landed a great role in 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean film and continued her climb upward. 2009 saw her debut in the Star Trek franchise, and 2014 saw her burst onto the scene for good.
Like a bevy of other actors and actresses, Zoe stars in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. If her character sticks around for future films is up for debate, but a definitive answer will be given when the film releases in May.
9 Amber Heard - Aquaman
Receiving awards in Hollywood is always an honor. Whether it be a small awards ceremony or a breathtaking showcase of talent and passion like the Oscars, it’s a big deal. One of these shows is known as the Young Hollywood Awards. It’s a show that, like the title hints at, focuses its attention on giving praise to the up and comers in the business.
Back in 2008, a young actress ended up winning the Breakthrough Award at this ceremony. At only 21 years of age, Amber Heard scooped up this award and hasn’t looked back since. She won the award for her roles in Pineapple Express and Never Back Down. Ten years later, Heard is still making waves in the entertainment industry.
Most recently, Heard had a role in Magic Mike XXL and this helped keep her in audience’s minds. She finally joined the superhero train when she appeared as Mera, Aquaman’s wife, in 2017’s Justice League. She’ll hit cinemas again as Mera in Aquaman’s solo film.
8 Emilia Clarke - Solo: A Star Wars Story
Game of Thrones is more than a television show. It’s a cultural phenomenon. It’s taken the world by storm and is the most pirated show of all time. When you have this much success, especially for a show on a premium cable channel, it says something about the quality of the show.
Casting a large portion of unknown actors and actresses, much of the cast is now recognized everywhere on the planet. One of these actresses who gained a massive dose of fame from the show is Emilia Clarke.
In a show that is filled with surprise moments and twists nobody sees coming, Clarke has been able to keep her role. She’s also starred in several movies to complement her television success. In 2018, she is going from a world of dragons to a galaxy far, far away. She has a starring role in the next Star Wars film, Solo: A Star Wars Story.
7 Cate Blanchett - Ocean's 8
2017 ended up being a huge year for superhero films. While some thought the inevitable superhero fatigue would finally begin during this year, these naysayers were once again proven wrong. And, even though this film is the third in a series that is considered one of the weakest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the movie blew audiences away and brought in an unexpected amount of money.
Thor: Ragnarok is a different approach to the superhero genre. Instead of showing action and sprinkling in humor, the film moves up to almost being a comedy film with action elements. This formula works, and that’s why the box office receipts for the movie are well beyond expectations. One of the standouts of the film is the character of Hela, played by Cate Blanchett.
Blanchett definitely falls into the steamy category, and you get to see her again in 2018. She is one of the many talented women starring in Ocean’s 8. We can also look forward to seeing Sandra Bullock and Rihanna with her in this new film, which ensures even more eye candy.
6 Michelle Williams - Venom
The comic book scene is the hottest commodity in Hollywood right now. Before 2000, the notion of a successful superhero movie dominating pop culture was a pipe dream. Sure, 1989’s Batman and its sequel did well, but those films were merely great films during a given year. The superhero movies of today seem to mold the pop culture landscape around them and become much more than movies.
While it seems that Marvel has a grip on the genre, Sony is also trying to nudge its way into the picture. They loaned Spider-Man to Disney and they also took some creative risks with raunchy comedy Deadpool and Western Logan. Both made ridiculous sums of money, and are considered some of the best superhero movies of the decade.
Sony is once again taking a creative risk as Venom, the villain to Spider-Man, hits theaters in late 2018. Michelle Williams lends her talents to this film, and she’s probably going to knock it out of the park.
5 Anne Hathaway - Ocean's 8
When you think of steamy celebrities, many names may spring to mind. But, one actress stands out from the bunch. Starting out with humble beginnings with films such as The Princess Diaries, this actress has used her talent in a variety of film genres. From family comedy to drama and action, no one does it better than Anne Hathaway.
One of the defining roles for Hathaway came in the form of a superhero trilogy. The Dark Knight trilogy of films sparked a revolution in superhero filmmaking. Superheroes could be edgy, dark, and they could be films that could be taken seriously. The ending of the trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises, starred Hathaway as Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman.
2018 brings Hathaway back to the action genre, but she is far away from superheroes. Instead, she’s starring in an all-female led cast in the latest iteration of the Ocean’s franchise. Ocean’s 8 hits theaters on June 8th.
4 Reese Witherspoon - A Wrinkle In Time
She’s been around Hollywood for a while now. Although she’s gotten older, that doesn’t mean she is any less beautiful. Reese Witherspoon has had an interesting career. In the early 2000s, Witherspoon was plastered all around Hollywood. She was one of the go-to actresses when you needed a lead in a romantic comedy. Her comedic timing was great, and she was a sure bet for a modest box office take.
However, as the years have gone on, Witherspoon’s appearances have seemed to dwindle. She doesn’t seem to be the queen of romantic comedies anymore. With all this in mind, you should take note that Witherspoon is about to star in a movie that looks set to make a pretty decent dent in the box office. Reese stars in the family adventure film A Wrinkle in Time. She stars with Mindy Kaling and Oprah Winfrey. The movie opens in the spring of 2018.
3 Chris Hemsworth - Avengers: Infinity War
With sandy blond hair and a body type to kill for, he’s one of the mightiest of Earth’s heroes. Who could this be? Why it’s Thor, the God of Thunder. Making his first appearance in 2011’s Thor, Chris Hemsworth made his mark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Most recently starring in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, Hemsworth has taken the character of Thor and molded him into a fantastically well-rounded character.
While the first two solo movies starring Thor had moments of comedy due to the incessant fish-out-of-water story that naturally occurs when an alien tries to understand the nuances of human behavior, the third outing is comedy gold. Ragnarok took a unique approach to the action film genre and it worked. Hemsworth’s comedic chops look to be working well and it shines through in the movie.
2018 sees Hemsworth return to the role in Avengers: Infinity War. His steamy looks will definitely shine bright.
2 Chris Pratt - Avengers: Infinity War And Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
What if you started out your film career doing small stuff? Bit roles and supporting parts are nothing to scoff at, as you’ve entered the film industry and any role is a success. However, while many make it to these entry-level tiers and find moderate success, only a select few go on to become superstars known the world over. This is exactly the same situation Chris Pratt has found himself in these past few years.
Finding a nice fit on the NBC comedy Parks and Recreation, Pratt showed off his comedic chops for a few years. And then, he nabbed the part that made him famous. He’s the lead in a little-known comic franchise called Guardians of the Galaxy. Oh, and the Jurassic Park franchise. In 2018, the second film in the new trilogy from Steven Spielberg hits theaters. Jurassic World looks to up the action and put a major dent in the summer box office.
1 Tom Hardy - Venom
This man had a daunting task back in 2012. While it may seem like a no-brainer now, Tom Hardy was still on the rise when he was cast as Bane in the third and final movie in the Dark Knight trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. He had to live up to the hype that the late Heath Ledger established earlier as his turn as the Joker. Hardy ended up doing a fantastic, albeit somewhat divisive, job with his time on the film.
Six years later, and Tom Hardy is starring in hits almost every year. 2018 looks to be no different, as he is set to star in a creative and slightly risky project taking place in the Spider-Man universe. Hardy will take on the role as Venom in the movie of the same name. The Sony project is loosely connected to the Marvel films and Hardy is looking to bring a graphic and gritty interpretation to the Spider-Man villain.
