Celebrities are often thought of as the most beloved and celebrated people on the planet, with throngs of fans and people cheering their names wherever they go. Yet, being in the public eye isn't just about soaking up the admiration. Worldwide fame can bring on a myriad of luxuries and privileges but can also bring on a huge amount of scrutiny over everything celebrities say and do. There have been a number of actresses that put their foot in their mouth and have paid dearly because of it. Instances like this have caused even the most devoted fans to turn on these celebrities, but sometimes, the actresses don't even really have to do something to have the world turn on them.

Oftentimes, over-exposure can be a killer for celebrities, and instead of being celebrated, they can be met with stony silence and jeer. There isn't really a steady guideline for actresses to stay on the good side of the public, and another factor involves their personal lives. While their personal relationships shouldn't directly affect the way they're perceived in their professional careers, the public can't help but weigh in on the life choices of these famous people. Things like cheating scandals can practically destroy a career, and the same can be said for feuds with other beloved celebrities. From actresses with Oscars to those that have only appeared in a handful of roles, check out our list of the 15 most hated actresses of all time, and see if you agree with the masses.

Julianne Hough

After Julianne Hough had already solidified herself as the darling of Dancing with the Stars, she began getting some major film roles from Safe Haven to Footloose that seemed to mark a promising career. Hough even starred alongside Tom Cruise in the 2012 film, Rock of Ages. Yet, there was one particular Halloween costume that caused the world to turn on her. In an effort to appear as Crazy Eyes from the hit series Orange Is the New Black, Hough made the misguided decision to don blackface. After public outrage, Hough took to her social media and stated, "It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people, and I truly apologize." While she's been featured in Dancing with the Stars and the Grease: Live TV special, her dream of becoming the next Cameron Diaz has been shot.

Anne Hathaway

The situation with Anne Hathaway is a little tricky since she started off being well on her way to becoming America's Sweetheart. She had a huge amount of success through films like Ella Enchanted and The Princess Diaries film series, and she continued to get roles as she grew older. While her roles in Bride Wars and The Devil Wears Prada resonated with fans, the public began to turn on her due to over-exposure. During the award season, she was constantly being thrust into the spotlight, and many criticized her for looking too polished and faking humility. The Internet exploded with people all having their own personal reasons on why they hated Anne Hathaway, and it caused her to step away from the limelight for quite some time.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow has starred in a number of highly acclaimed films over the years and has even won an Academy Award. While she's a favorite for period dramas, she's proven that there's really nothing she can't do on the big screen. She's even proven that she's a talented singer and performer through her role in Country Strong and has even starred alongside Robert Downey Jr. in the beloved Iron Man films. While she could have definitely left it there in order to maintain some semblance of admiration from the public, she chose to create a "lifestyle" website, Goop. People quickly criticized how out of touch with reality Paltrow was, from the yacht party to-do list articles to the $200 smoothie that she just can't live without having daily. Peeking behind the veil was just too much for the public, and now, she's just the hated Martha Stewart wannabe who isn't half as good.

Megan Fox

When Megan Fox was first introduced to the world, people began to perk up their interest with this younger version of Angelina Jolie. She was just starting to get big roles, even if they were mostly just characters that wore scantily-clad ensembles. Yet, she wound up making some statements that many construed as anti-Semitic. She had already starred in the first Transformers film and was slated to follow that up with her performance in the sequel. During an interview with the British magazine Wonderland, Megan made some shocking comparisons between Hitler and Michael Bay. Part of the interview included Fox stating, "He wants to be like Hitler on his sets, and he is. So he's a nightmare to work for, but when you get him away from the set, and he's not in director mode, I kind of really enjoy his personality because he's so awkward, so hopelessly awkward." She was promptly taken off Transformers 2, and the word in Hollywood has spread that she's no longer going to have a bright future in the eyes of fans or filmmakers.

Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart was once one of the most beloved actresses with young Twilight fans, and her relationship with her costar, Robert Pattinson, made young girls wish they were her for just one day. Yet, her cheating affair with her married director, Rupert Sanders, changed all of that. Fans despised her for breaking Edward's heart, and the backstory behind her affair made things even worse. Not only was Sanders already married, but his wife actually appeared in the film Snow White and the Huntsman alongside Stewart. She played Stewart's mother in the film, but her character died before they could actually interact on screen. That may have been all for the better since it was later discovered that Stewart was carrying on an affair with Mrs. Sanders's husband while filming.

Claire Danes

When Claire Danes first started out acting on My So-Called Life, people could already tell there was something special about her. The TV series only ran for one season, but it cultivated a cult following, and people instantly recognized her when she transitioned to the big screen. Yet, her personal relationships began making headlines for the worst reasons. She famously couldn't get along with Leonardo DiCaprio while filming Romeo + Juliet, and then there was the whole issue of stealing away another woman's husband. Billy Crudup had been in an 8-year long relationship with Weeds star, Mary-Louise Parker, and the two were expecting their first child together. She was seven months into her pregnancy when Crudup left her to be with Danes. The public continues to shun her from becoming a true all-out favorite actress, and it's not surprising that it's been quite some time since she's starred as the leading lady in a big-budget film.

Mischa Barton

There was a time when Mischa Barton was considered one of the hottest celebrities of young Hollywood. She flexed her acting skills in a number of roles but is probably best known for her character on The O.C. as Marissa Cooper. While she didn't have many roles in Hollywood films, her appearance in The Sixth Sense made it seem like she might be able to branch out as a more serious actress. Yet, the partying headlines and crazed appearances in her personal life made the public start to cringe about where her life was headed. She began fading out of the spotlight and only reemerged when there was another crazed photo of her that made its way into the tabloids. The last straw with the public was when she posted a highly insensitive photo on Instagram where she referenced the slaying of Alton Sterling on a luxury yacht. People called her out for her self-promotion and were disgusted that she would use Sterling's death as a way to flaunt her stuff.

Katherine Heigl

Katherine Heigl was already a recognizable actress prior to being cast on the hit Shonda Rhimes series, Grey's Anatomy. Yet, this was the role that catapulted her into being considered a formidable actress in Hollywood. It led to her appearing in a series of roles on the big screen, but things quickly turned once some of the stories about her behavior offscreen started making headlines. After winning an Emmy for her performance in Grey's Anatomy, she removed her name for consideration the following year. She gave an interview with the Los Angeles Times where she claimed, "In an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention. ...I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials." It wasn't long before she was killed off of Grey's Anatomy, and the public looked at her like she was truly off her rocker. Heigl went on the radio with Howard Stern and stated, "I was really struggling with it and how to not take it all personally and not to feel that there's something really deeply wrong with me."

Gabrielle Union

While there are a number of celebrities who have retained the relationships they've had prior to gaining fame, there's a tendency to upgrade in both Hollywood and sports. Dwyane Wade is a great example of this since he was married to his high school sweetheart, Siohvaughn Funches, and had two children with her. While they were officially married from 2002 to 2010, there were rumors of his relationship with Gabrielle Union as early as 2007. He ultimately divorced Funches and went public with his relationship with Union. Funches filed a lawsuit against Wade for not following a court order to split proceeds from his endorsement deals. During the time when Wade signed a deal for over $90 million, Funches was seen holding a sign in Chicago claiming that she was homeless. Although Union wound up marrying Wade, the public still looks at her like she's a homewrecker.

Sienna Miller

When it was revealed that Jude Law was carrying on an affair with the nanny, he was publicly shamed over this cheating scandal. The headlines involving his cheating on Sienna Miller caused people to openly mock him. It was even featured in the Sex and the City sequel, with the characters laughing and joking about his dalliance with the nanny. Yet, a hacking scandal brought some new information to light, and the public quickly turned on Miller. The News of the World was put on trial for hacking into Daniel Craig's voicemail, and the recordings showed that Miller was actually having an affair with Craig. To make things even more sordid, Craig was actually friends with Jude Law. The three of them were often photographed laughing and going out together, and the public learning that she could do that to her husband was a huge blow to her public persona.

Madonna

While Madonna is best known for being an icon in pop music, there's no denying that she's been in a number of films from Desperately Seeking Susan to Evita. There was even a time when Madonna was seriously considered a Hollywood actress. Fans loved seeing her in things like A League of Their Own and hoped that they'd see her in more Hollywood films. Yet, the antics in her personal life began overshadowing her talent, and people started to cringe at her desperate attempts at staying young and garnering attention. The latest snafu came when she spoke at an anti-Trump rally and referenced "blowing up the White House." While it's become normal for celebrities to back certain political agenda and individuals, people slammed Madonna for her rhetoric and for stirring things up rather than trying to help bring the nation together.

Roseanne Barr

When Roseanne Barr was asked to sing the national anthem at a San Diego Padres game in 1990, she had a sitcom success under her belt and had a number of profitable projects in her professional career. She had previously done a singing bit in her act and was confident enough in her singing skills to stand up and sing this song that meant so much to the nation. Yet, she started off too high in the beginning and couldn't quite reach the big notes. The result was a screeching mess that drew jeers, insults, and even thrown items from the fans at the game. Afterward, she grabbed her crotch and spit while walking off the field. The anger from the fans was palpable, and Barr had to get a security officer to get her child safely out of there. Barr gave an interview with the Washington Post where she spoke about the hatred she felt after that performance and being spit on by strangers.

Jane Fonda

Jane Fonda has had some recent success on the big screen and through the TV series Grace and Frankie, but that was after decades of criticism stemming from an infamous trip to Vietnam. During the Vietnam War, there was a huge sense of turmoil in America, but it wasn't just the Vietnam conflict that riled people up. The U.S. was sustaining massive deaths and casualties, and the heartbreak was palpable. In 1972, Fonda made a visit to Hanoi and was photographed on an anti-aircraft gun. In a series of photos, she could be seen laughing and conversing with a piece of machinery that was used to kill American soldiers. She was deemed "Hanoi Jane" and despised as a traitor to her country. In 2011, she wrote a piece for The Huffington Post that tried to explain her behavior from that time. The blog included the statement, "The lies distort the truth of why I went to North Vietnam, and they perpetuate the myth that being anti-war means being anti-soldier."

Stacey Dash

While it's not uncommon for celebrities to voice their opinion on certain political issues, there have been more than a few that have made damaging statements that seriously affected their careers. Stacey Dash was once thought of as the beautiful bestie in the Clueless film and TV series, but she didn't seem to have much else. When she became a television personality in voicing her opinion on world news and politics, it wasn't long before the public pounced on her for some of her most damaging remarks. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Dash addressed the controversy over the transgender bathrooms and demanded that Caitlyn Jenner be made to use the bushes for a bathroom. She also said that there shouldn't be a Black History Month and that race shouldn't be included in politics. It caused a huge outpouring of hatred, specifically from the black community, and she was subsequently fired from her Fox job.

Paz De La Huerta

When Paz de la Huerta was unceremoniously let go from the hit HBO series, Boardwalk Empire, people weren't exactly surprised. While there was inevitably a big storyline for this character, her personal antics behind-the-scenes was undoubtedly the cause to have her Lucy Danziger character walk out of the room, never to be seen or heard from again. Over the years, she's made headlines -- and not for the best of reasons. From flashing concerts to drunken appearances, her sloppiness was starting to become famous. There was even an incident involving Jack Nicholson where she claimed that she was using him to get her boyfriend jealous. Fans don't take too kindly to talk like that about a screen legend, and the partying habits started to get old.
