No one in the world is smooth-tempered all the time. We are emotional creatures and our feelings and circumstances can sometimes lead us to meltdowns. The human mind will only tolerate so much before it short-circuits and when this happens, it can result in some pretty wild and out of character behavior. We’ve all been there before. Some people start to act irrationally while others instantly explode in anger, even lashing out at the people around them. But unlike celebrities, we are able to live down our meltdowns because not everyone knows about them.
But when you are a famous person nothing you say or do is private anymore and celeb meltdown moments are recorded more carefully than anything else they do. Let’s face it, we like to see famous people lose it, not because we are mean-hearted, but because it makes them more human and makes us feel better about ourselves. And when they go on mad egotistical rants (think Kanye) or post nude pictures on social media (think Kim Kardashian), we can grab a tub of popcorn, sit back, and watch the carnage unfold.
Here are 15 celebs who are still struggling to live down their worst moments:
15 Nicki Minaj Vs Mariah Carey
Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey together, judging other people on their singing ability, what could possibly go wrong?
The feud between Minaj and Carey was well documented in the media, but who started it remains a mystery. The former American Idol judges apparently got into a heated squabble after Nicki criticized Mariah for being overly harsh with one of the contestants. Mariah responded by saying “I’m sorry, it’s just that that’s what I do, Nicki." Minaj wasn’t about to be outdone and immediately quipped back, “Oh, you’re right. I’m sorry I can’t help her. Maybe I should just get off the (expletive) panel! Let me get off the panel!” She then tossed her seat behind her and stormed off the set, shouting all the way.
One source reported that Mariah had been jabbing Nicki from day one and on this day Nicki just snapped. Too many egos in the room if you ask us.
14 Britney Spears: Head Shaving And Umbrella Attacks
2006 and 2007 were not the best years for Britney Spears. Firstly, there was the incident where she was photographed driving with her infant son unsecured on her lap. A few months later she checked into a drug rehabilitation facility in Antigua where she stayed for less than 24 hours before checking herself out. The following night she went into a hair salon in Tarzana, Los Angeles and infamously shaved all her hair off while paparazzi recorded her meltdown. A few days later she attacked a paparazzo’s car with an umbrella before checking into another treatment facility. Not long afterward she lost custody of her children.
Her explanation of the umbrella incident was even more bizarre than the attack itself. She wrote on her website, “I was preparing my character for a role in a movie where the husband never plays his part so they switch places accidentally. I take all my roles very seriously and got a little carried away. Unfortunately, I didn't get the part."
13 Chris Brown Lost The Plot On Good Morning America
In 2011, Chris Brown appeared on Good Morning America for a live performance and an interview but it didn’t go quite as he planned. Robin Roberts made the mistake of quizzing Brown about the 2009 assault on his ex-girlfriend Rihanna and the restraining order that followed and Brown didn’t like that one bit. Unable to control himself, he stormed off to his dressing room during a commercial break and became violent, ripping off his shirt and throwing a chair at a window. He had several confrontations with the show's staff and eventually left the building topless.
Later he continued to rant about the incident on Twitter, "I'm so over people bring [sic] this past (expletive) up!! Yet we praise Charlie Sheen and other celebs for there (expletive) [sic]." He deleted the post moments later but we haven’t forgotten this little rant yet.
12 Snooki Was Described As A "Lindsay Lohan Wannabe"
For those of you who don’t know Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, her claim to fame was as a cast member on the MTV reality show Jersey Shore. Since the show ended, Nicole has made numerous appearances on talk shows such as The View and Jimmy Kimmel and competed at WrestleMania XXVII in 2011.
But back in 2010, it seems that fame got the better of Snooki and she was arrested in Seaside Heights, New Jersey for disorderly conduct and criminal annoyance of others. She was released later the same day when her BFF Jenni "JWoww" Farley bailed her out of jail. She was sentenced to community service and a $500 fine by Judge Damian G. Murray who characterized her as a “Lindsay Lohan wannabe". Now if that’s not an insult, we don’t know what is!
11 Kanye’s Meltdown Was Caused By Stress (Or So They Say)
Apparently, the rapper was annoyed when he realized that he could not use the set he had planned for his performance and launched into an almost nonsensical rant. He declared that Stanley Kubrick, Pablo Picasso, Paul the Apostle, and Pablo Escobar were “50 percent more influential” than the average human being and spoke of his own importance saying “Don’t (expletive) with me. By 50 percent dead or alive, by 50 percent for the next 1,000 years.” The audio was leaked and was soon all over the internet. According to insiders, Kanye was “under a great deal of pressure” at the time.
10 Kim Kardashian Slammed Bette Midler For Disapproving Of Her Nude Selfies
Kim Kardashian wants the world to admire her but don’t you dare try to criticize her or it could lead to a meltdown. Much like the little Twitter tiff she had when a few celebs had the nerve to respond negatively to one of her nude selfies.
Chloe Grace Moretz and Bette Midler criticized Kim for her over-exposure and she lashed out at them via tweets. "hey @BetteMidler," she tweeted to the veteran performer, "I really didn't want to bring up how you sent me a gift awhile back trying to be a fake friend then come at me #dejavu." She downplayed Moretz’s comments by replying, “Let's all welcome @ChloeGMoretz to twitter, since no one knows who she is. your nylon cover is cute boo." Real classy Kim.
9 Charlie Sheen Couldn’t Accept His Departure From Two And A Half Men
After season eight of Two and a Half Men, the producers just couldn’t take Charlie Sheen’s erratic behavior any longer and the decision was made to kill off his character. Chuck Lorre, the show's creator, broke the news to Charlie and let’s just say he didn’t take it well.
He made such derogatory comments about Lorre that they had to ban him from entering the Warner Bros’ production lot.
He later appeared in an interview with ABC and it was clear the incident still had him fighting mad. He blasted Lorre, calling him a “turd” and a “clown” and proclaimed that he was "not bipolar but 'bi-winning” – whatever that means. That’s not really a nice way of treating someone who allowed you to earn $1.8 million per episode, is it Charlie?
8 The Pressure Of Meeting Fans Led Justin Bieber To A Breaking Point
Sometimes you just have to laugh at celebs and their ideas about “pressure” and “stress”. Pressure for normal people is worrying about money to pay the rent and buy food, but for celebs even meeting their fans can be too intense. You’d think that, seeing as how they choose careers which put them in the spotlight, they would like having fans, right? Apparently not.
Last year Bieber took to Instagram to announce that he would be canceling all his future Purpose tour meet-and-greets. His post read, “Love u guys.. I'm going to be canceling my meet and greets. I enjoy meeting such incredible people but I end up feeling so drained and filled with so much of other people's spiritual energy that I end up so drained and unhappy..,”. Sorry being famous leaves you so distraught Justin, maybe you could just stop singing?
7 The Undisputed Queen Of The Meltdown
We couldn’t do a list of the best celebrity meltdowns without including the undisputed Queen of the Meltdown – Lindsay Lohan. She’s become more famous for her tantrums, substance abuse, and legal issues than she ever was for her acting.
Her highly public image breakdown began back in 2007 when she got her first DUI and was put on probation. From there, things just went from bad to worse and every week it seemed Lindsay was on the front page of a tabloid with her latest self-destructive move. It didn’t paint a very good image of the young actress – flashing, falling down drunk, mugshots all over the show and her career took a sharp nose-dive. The world can’t seem to forget Lindsay’s meltdowns and it’s uncertain that she’ll ever be able to live down this period of her life.
6 Michael Richards' Racial Rant Ruined His Rep
Everyone remembers Michael Richards from the show Seinfeld where he played Cosmo Kramer. His funny quips earned him legions of fans as the show grew in popularity, but an incident in a comedy club in 2006 left people thinking that he wasn’t nearly as nice as the character he portrayed on the show.
While performing at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles in 2006 Richards became irritated with a noisy group of people in the audience and lost his cool. He launched headfirst into an angry and racist rant peppered with mentions of lynchings and repeated use of racial slurs.
He later apologized but denied that he was racist, saying that he had acted in rage, but his reputation was never the same again.
5 Mel Gibson Just Couldn’t Keep A Lid On His Racial Slurs
Australian actor Mel Gibson has had so many public and leaked meltdowns that it’s hard to decide which one was the worst.
If we had to choose, we would say that the leaked phone conversations that emerged back in 2010 took the cake. At the time Gibson was involved in a hardcore custody battle with Oksana Grigorieva and just when Mel thought things couldn’t get any worse the taped conversations leaked out to the press and almost ruined his reputation.
During the recording, Gibson let loose with a slew of profane insults towards gays, African-Americans, Jews, Mexicans, and immigrants, using the most politically incorrect terms he could think of. The recordings painted him as a sexist and racist. Gibson has also had a number of run-ins with the police over DUI’s and during those encounters, he was also recorded using the same type of slurs.
4 Amanda Bynes Went All Kinds Of Crazy
Amanda Bynes rose to fame as a child star in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s on the Nickelodeon TV series All That and The Amanda Show. But in 2012 she started having run-in’s with the police and was charged with two hit and run incidents. She managed to escape with three years probation, but her license was suspended.
Then things started getting a little weird, even by Hollywood standards. It started with strange remarks and statements on Twitter followed by almost nude photos and cringe-worthy attempts to hit on Drake. She was arrested for throwing a bong out of the window of her New York home and looked very much worse for wear when she arrived for her court date. Things got so crazy that she was eventually placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold after starting a fire.
She seems to be doing better these days and announced in March 2017 that she plans to return to acting, but we’re not quite sure the world is ready for her yet.
3 Robert Downey Jr. Will Still Need A Few More Years To Live Down His Reputation
Robert Downey Jr. has come a long, long way since the 90s when his hard living and drug taking cost him his high-profile role in Ally McBeal. During that time Robert just seemed to go from meltdown to meltdown thanks to a wicked substance abuse problem and the press was there to chronicle every arrest and every bad move he made. He was on a downward spiral and few people believed that he would ever be able to recover his career.
Amazingly he did manage to pull himself together and make the comeback of a lifetime, but even now that he’s been clean and sober for years people still associate him with the Robert he used to be. It took him a couple of years to earn the rep and it will still take a few more to live it down completely.
2 Björk Attacked A Reporter At The Height Of Her Fame
Icelandic singing sensation Björk shocked the world, not only with her avant-garde style but also with an attack on a reporter when she was at the height of her fame.
In 1996 Björk arrived at Bangkok International Airport with her son after a long haul flight. Cameras and press were camped out despite the singer's earlier request that she be left alone until later that day. As she walked away from the reporters one of them, Julie Kaufman, addressed her and said, “Welcome to Bangkok”. The singer lunged at her out of nowhere and knocked her to the ground. She later stated that Kaufman had been pestering her for days before the meltdown, but she apologized for the attack. The reporter didn’t lay any formal charges against the singer and claimed that she was not hurt during the incident.
1 Anne Heche's Break-Up Caused Her To Break Down
The world fell in love with power couple Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche. Their romance was inspiring, but when it came to an end Heche completely lost it.
The day after the breakup Heche was so distraught that she suffered a psychotic break and drove, partially dressed, to Fresno and entered a stranger's home. Once inside she took a leisurely shower, then put on a pair of Mickey Mouse slippers and started talking to the terrified children trapped in the house with her, urging them to come with her to a spaceship which would take them all to heaven. When the police arrived Heche insisted to them that she was a god named Celestia. Her management team later tried to explain the incident, saying that Heche had been suffering from exhaustion and dehydration, but another source claimed that she had actually taken ecstasy.
It's going to be a while before anyone forgets this little incident because Heche wrote a book about it called Call Me Crazy. Pro move.
