Another year has just come to an end and it's time to set our resolutions for 2018. As in years past, December 31 sets us on a mad scramble for self-improvement and setting unrealistic physical goals for ourselves. The cycle is a little bit nauseating, but alas, we continue to jump on the hamster wheel, year after year. So, while we were busy working and keeping up with the grind, the outside world was unfolding, as it does. Last brought us an embarrassing Oscar flub, the release from prison of notorious criminal O.J. Simpson, and Beyoncé's twins. There was a Royal engagement, social and political campaigning on unprecedented levels, and quite a few natural disasters. We lost icons Chuck Berry, Gord Downie, Chester Bennington, and Chris Cornell.
No, it wasn't really a great year, but 2017 definitely brought us some celebrity moments that we won't soon forget. Eminem took on Trump in a savage freestyle, the #metoo campaign gave victims of abuse a much needed voice, and Noel and Joel Gallagher put their age-long feud to rest, finally. Before we jump into a new year, let's take a walk down memory lane and revisit some of the most shocking, outrageous, and downright insane events that left us speechless. Here are 15 Celebrity Moments That Broke The Internet In 2017.
15 Eminem Takes On...
Eminem is not the first celebrity to publicly oppose current American president, Donald Trump, but in 2017, he got very creative while expressing his political views. Eminem's anti-Trump rap went viral in October, when it was broadcast at the BET Awards ceremony. The angry freestyle accuses Mr. Trump of racism, sexism, hypocrisy, and disrespect of the military. He even went so far as to tell his fans that if they are Trump supporters, they best find another artist to listen to. The line was very clearly drawn in the sand that Eminem is not down with Trump or his supporters. Although he's been criticized in the past for being too abrasive with his raps, this one was met with pretty widespread support. He continues to talk about his dislike for Trump and hopes that he will be impeached in the New Year.
14 Chris Cornell Passes
The hearts of music fans worldwide broke when news of Chris Cornell's death started circulating on the web on May 18. The famed grunge musician was the frontman of popular bands Soundgarden and Audioslave. His career has spanned over 3 decades and his music was an inspiration to many other performers. At only 52 years old, Cornell left behind his wife, Vicky, and their three children. His suicide was confirmed after he had performed a show with his band Soundgarden, in Detroit, MI, the Wednesday night. Cornell had famously suffered from substance abuse issues and depression for a big part of his life, although he had managed to maintain sobriety from 2005. His struggles were outlined in many of his songs and personal writings. His death brought to light how important it is for mental health to be given proper attention.
13 Beyoncé Welcomes Twins
Beyoncé officially confirmed her pregnancy in February 2017, just about 5 months into her pregnancy with a twin boy and girl. Her Instagram confirmation quickly went viral, hitting close to 7 million likes in just 8 hours. It would be a new record for Instagram likes on a photo. The diva and her sometimes-estranged hubby, Jay-Z, went from 1 to 3 children with the births of Rumi and Sir Carter on June 13, 2017. Although the musical duo now have largest parenting roles, they have shown no signs of slowing down their careers. Beyoncé continued to perform at various events and concerts during her pregnancy, and she has recently been confirmed as part of the 2018 Coachella line-up. Queen Bey certainly knows how to make headlines; this was one of the biggest celeb stories of 2017.
12 O.J. Simpson Released From Jail
After spending 9 years of a 33-year prison sentence for armed robbery, 70-year-old convict O.J. Simpson was released from prison. On October 1, 2017, Simpson officially retained his title of "free man," although he may never truly be free from the guilt and shame he undoubtedly carries with him for his vicious acts in 1994, which left his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman dead. He has allegedly settled into a new home in Las Vegas, the city where the 2007 armed robbery took place at the Palace Station hotel and casino. Simpson is subject to pretty strict parole conditions and any violation could mean he would be sent back to prison. According to his friends and family, he wants to spend the rest of his years enjoying life, playing golf, and appreciating quality time with his loved ones.
11 The Reinvention Of Taylor Swift
If there's one thing that Taylor Swift excels at, it's marketing. The one-time tween pop princess seems to have reinvented herself time after time, from country curls to sassy '50s pinup to savage, heartless, hot monster. Taylor's newest album, her sixth full-length record titled Reputation, was released in November, but quickly became the year's best-selling album in the United States. The album confronts Taylor's "reputation" head-on, proving that she is not afraid of what her enemies think of her. Many of the songs poke fun at certain incidents from the star's private life, making us wonder if she really is completely apathetic or, perhaps, just very vengeful. Whatever the case, Taylor shows no signs of giving up her throne — she is pop's princess, for better or for worse.
10 Prince Harry Gets Engaged To An American Girl
In November, 2017, the Royal family confirmed there would be another wedding in the not-so-distant future. Prince Harry, 33, asked his American girlfriend, former actress Meghan Markle, for her hand in marriage, a year and a half after the pair began dating. For many, the news came as a shock, but those close to the pair were convinced that the engagement was imminent. Hardcore traditional Brits shook their heads at the idea that a non-British citizen would marry into the Royal family, breaking tradition and potentially meddling with the ever-important blue blood that runs through the Royal families' veins. For most of the world, the engagement was seen as beautiful; a celebration of true love and a shift toward a more progressive and less traditional symbol of royalty.
9 Best Picture Oscar Flub
The 2017 Academy Awards were talked about for months after the show was over, and for more reasons than you'd think. In a historically unprecedented incident, the award for Best Picture was initially presented to the wrong cast. Presenter Faye Dunaway called the cast and crew of La La Land up to the stage at the end of the show, presenting them with Oscars, until the unthinkable happened. After two minutes and thirty seconds on stage, celebrating their win, the cast of La La Land were informed that they did not, in fact, win the award. The Best Picture Oscar was then presented to its rightful owners, the cast of Moonlight. The epic mess-up will not soon be forgotten, and presenters at the 2018 Academy Awards will probably be very careful to make sure they have the correct envelopes before naming winners!
8 Lady Gaga Flies High At The Super Bowl
Lady Gaga is not a performer who likes to do things modestly and, of course, we expected no less than an extravagant show at the 2017 Super Bowl where she performed during halftime. In true Gaga fashion, she played a 13-minute medley of some of her top hits, with a taste of "Million Reasons" from her latest album, Joanne. She danced, she sang, she flew. Clad in a silver futuristic bodysuit, she was lowered onto the stage, making her entrance among a bunch of drones that were hovering above the stage. She later changed into a cropped, studded white leather top and hot pants, channeling a mix of Dolly Parton and Madonna. Although her most recent album did not come close to her peak sales record (from "The Fame," her debut album which sold 15 million copies), she did see a huge surge in sales in the aftermath of her Super Bowl performance.
7 Anna Faris And Chris Pratt Divorce
One of the most unexpected and upsetting celebrity splits of 2017 was the rupture of funny couple Anna Faris and Chris Pratt. The pair, who were regarded as one of the sweetest couples in Hollywood, were together for 10 years and have one son together. In August, Chris broke the hearts of their combined fans when he announced their split on social media. Although the pair remain close and wanted to keep the details of their rupture as private as possible, people were on the hunt for answers. You couldn't open a search page or pass a magazine stand without seeing headlines about their split. In the end, it seemed they split because they both had different goals for their family and different views of how they wanted to live their lives. The old "irreconcilable differences" struck Hollywood once again.
6 The Kardashian Sisters Get Pregnant
First, it was confirmed that Kim Kardashian West and hubby Kanye were expecting their third child through a surrogate. The baby is due in January, 2018 (any day now!). As 2017 unfolded, rumours started to circulate that Kim might not be the only Kardashian sister to be expecting. Kylie and Khloe are both also expecting babies, in both cases, their first! Kylie's baby daddy is Travis Scott, her rapper boyfriend. They are expecting a girl. Khloe, who has been dating 26-year-old basketball player Tristan Thompson for over a year is expecting her baby in April, 2018. One thing is for sure, the world is anxiously awaiting the three future Kardashians to hit the scene in 2018. Who knows what they will grow up to be? Perhaps reality TV stars?
5 The One Love Manchester Concert Unites
The One Love Manchester concert was a benefit concert held in Manchester on June 4, 2017. The concert was organized to support the victims and family members of victims of the Manchester terror attack, which took place at the Manchester Arena on May 22, following an Ariana Grande concert. The attack claimed 22 lives and injured more than 500 people, 116 of them were seriously injured. The Red Cross reported having raised $13 million in the 12 hours after the concert aired on worldwide channels, and an additional $4 million was raised via ticket sales and Facebook marketing. Created by Ariana Grande, more than 50,000 people attended the concert. Performances by Coldplay, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber. and Miley Cyrus were highlights of the concert.
4 Bachelor In Paradise Investigation
Season 4 of Bachelor in Paradise had its fair share of drama, and nothing was more overblown than the alleged scandal that halted filming and production for several weeks. The incident unfolded when two participants in the show, Corinne Olympios and DeMario Jackson were getting hot and heavy in the poo, soon after arriving at the mansion. A cameraman who was watching them said there was, allegedly, some sort of misconduct that transpired. Filming and production of the show halted immediately and news of the scandal hit the press. Both contestants opted to leave the show and not return to finish the season, even though an investigation proved that the allegations of misconduct were unfounded. Was this just another tactic to get viewers to tune in?
3 Attack On The Route 91 Harvest Festival
In October, what should've been an enjoyable and fun country music festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, quickly turned into America's most deadly mass shooting in history. While headliner Jason Aldean was on stage, performing to 22,000 people, a deranged 64-year-old man by the name of Stephen Paddock started shooting round after round of ammunition into the crowd from his hotel room window. In total, 1,100 shots were fired, 59 people were killed, and over 500 people were injured, some critically. The attack left Americans broken-hearted, as once again, a mass shooting had brought to light the need for stricter gun control laws and legislation. This was certainly not the highlight of 2017; the tragic incident will not soon be forgotten.
2 Tom Petty Dies
Many celebrities pass in 2017, but none was more shocking than the untimely demise of musician Tom Petty. The legend had just wrapped up his 40th anniversary tour with his band, The Heartbreakers, days before. On October 2, 2017, he suffered a heart attack in his Malibu home and went into cardiac arrest, dying later that day at the hospital. Fans were devastated to hear that the 66-year-old had passed away so suddenly, he seemed to have so much more music in him. A natural-born performer, Petty's career spanned over 40 years, in which time he sold more than 80 million records. He was one of the most successful artists of all time and was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2001. He left behind his wife, Dana, and two children.
1 #MeToo Movement
The year 2017 will go down in the books as a year that brought to light the realities of male and female inequality. In a viral Internet campaign that started on Twitter under the guise of hashtag #metoo, the social movement aimed to shed light on the magnitude and severity of abuse against women in all walks of life. The hashtag first emerged in October 2017, in the wake of several abuse allegations against film mogul Harvey Weinstein. Celebrities spoke up against the film director and many others in what could only be called a waterfall movement. It seemed like every day since October 2017, more women were coming forward to publicly confront their abusers. The movement provoked unprecedented traffic on Twitter, Instragram, and Facebook, with reports that 45 per cent of Facebook users had at least one friend who hashtagged #metoo.
