We may think they live easy lives, but the truth is that celebrities live in a cutthroat world. Everything they do is looked at and analyzed through a microscope. Just imagine living life not being able to go to a supermarket without someone trying to snap a pic of you. For celebrity women, this is even worse as they also have to deal with the fact that the paparazzi are constantly looking for angles to capture the unavoidable wardrobe malfunctions any woman suffers from time to time.
But the fact that we don’t think about celebrities as other human beings too often makes it a lot easier to hate them. After all, these are filthy rich people who can buy whatever they want, live wherever they want, and date whoever they want to some extent. And while most celebrities are loved or hated to an acceptable level, there are a select few who have to deal with some extra level of hate from the public. These are the folks that we love to hate. You know, the celebrities who society makes you believe you must hate. Still, if there is one thing human beings are notorious for, it is keeping secrets. And we will be damned if there is not at least one celebrity out there who is hated by every single person you know, but deep down in your heart, you know you love them.
Get ready to have some of those secret loves of yours brought to light because here are 15 celebrities everyone loves to hate but secretly love.
15 All Of The Kardashians
The Kardashians might just be the most hated family in the history of the world. And yes, we are including the Borgias and all other range of families in history who were responsible for the deaths of millions. We’re not saying the Kardashians are cruel or anything, but they are despised by more people than those families were. The reasoning behind why people hate the Kardashians makes a lot of sense. Just think about how this family rose to fame. It all started when the patriarch, Robert, became involved with the O.J. Simpson case. Yeah, not the best of beginnings. But somehow, they managed to make it even worse.
That happened when his daughter, Kim, became famous after making a s*x tape with Ray J. Since then, things kept piling up and piling up until we drowned in Kardashian stuff. These days, you cannot log into Facebook and not see something about a Kardashian pop up. That has to be because many people secretly love this family. How much are you to blame for this?
14 Mel Gibson
Mel Gibson is a tough guy to describe. As an actor, there is little doubt that he is one of the best in the business. But even though he does a fantastic job of portraying the most varied of characters on the big screen, there is one character that Gibson hid away from the world for a long time, and as fate would have it, it was the most terrifying character of them all. Of course, the character we are talking about is Mel Gibson himself.
Racist, sexist, you name it. Gibson has been known to take part in all kinds of prejudice. The most notorious of his lines was when he was caught saying he hoped that one of his ex-girlfriends would end up getting “raped by a pack of n***ers.” And that is only the tip of the iceberg with Gibson since we are leaving out his rants about Jews being responsible for all the wars in the world.
And yet, just like Bieber, this guy is so talented that, no matter how much you hate him as a person, you can’t help but love it when you see him on the big screen (playing someone other than himself, of course).
13 Adam Sandler
Saying you like Adam Sandler is pretty much social suicide these days. Don’t get us wrong. There was a point in time when Sandler was one of the funniest guys in cinema. But, we almost feel ashamed of saying that today. Perhaps, it is because his brand of comedy is something that should have been left in the past. Maybe it is the fact that Sandler never seemed too keen on evolving with the times.
Either way, you don’t need us telling you why you hate Adam Sandler. All you need to do is check out the box offices of every single movie he has been a protagonist in over the past few years. He just doesn’t draw as much of a crowd as he used to. Which, deep inside, is something that makes you feel sad, maybe even to a point where sometimes you’d just like to hide away in your room and play one of his old movies with the headphones on so you can laugh and remember the good times.
12 Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus is another interesting celebrity to have on this list. Although her “crazy” phase seems to have already passed, it was that period of her life and career that made society define her as one of the celebrities who you should lean towards hating. But the fact about Miley is that the transformation she went through is one that hits close to home to a lot of millennials.
Just think about it. What people called “crazy” was Miley coming out of her shell. This is a young woman who spent almost her entire youth as a Disney star. The amount of pressure those kids must feel because they have to be “pure” in order to live up to Disney standards is immense; a much higher degree than what you felt every time your parents scolded you for doing something they didn’t think was something you should be doing. So yes, secretly, we all love Miley because deep down, everyone gets what she went through.
11 Kanye West
Kanye West is the best example of why being talented allows celebrities to get away with a lot. There is little doubt that Kanye is one of the great musicians of our time. Still, everything about this guy outside of his singing makes you want to hate him. It all started in 2009, when he pulled one of the sh*ttiest moves in the history of award ceremonies by interrupting Taylor Swift and saying that she didn’t deserve the award she was receiving. Imagine if someone other than Kanye did that. They would become social pariahs. But because he is as talented as he is, West remains one of the biggest celebrities in the world.
From there, his attitude and everything else about Kanye just served as fuel for the ever-growing fire of people who hate him. Nevertheless, deep down, we must all love this guy. After all, whenever a new album comes out or he makes the news, we can’t help but click on it or buy the album.
10 Anne Hathaway
Anne Hathaway is one of those 50-50 people. If you love her, you are passionate about it. But if you are like most people, you just hate her because she reminds you of somebody who annoyed you throughout your youth. In every high school, no matter which corner of the globe you lived, there was always that one theater kid who annoyed everybody. Anne Hathaway embodies that archetype.
Richard Lawson defined it very well in an interview for Hollywood.com, “She’s got this theater kid thing where she adopts the mood of every situation she’s in — rude and bawdy on Chelsea Lately, poised and ‘classy’ at the Oscars, etc. — but wildly overcompensates every time,” he said.
At the end of the day, her personality became annoying to almost everyone, which prompted the wave of hate towards Hathaway. Still, as annoying as she might be, this “theater kid” is still someone we love to watch.
9 Shia LaBeouf
The train wreck of train wrecks, Shia LaBeouf quickly went from being everyone’s favorite action hero for his role in Transformers to becoming perhaps the most notorious figure in Hollywood. While we have gotten used to hearing Mel Gibson’s private racist rants, LaBeouf is someone who has got a knack for turning controversies up a notch. Most celebrities get heat for the stuff they do in private but unavoidably comes out. This guy seems to go out of his way to cause a ruckus in public places and, when the police cameras are on him, he goes up another level and starts cursing at the cops.
It is the kind of thing that would be so entertaining to watch in a movie but puts us in a state of disbelief when we find out that it’s all happening in real life. Train wreck or not, LaBeouf is one of the most talented actors out there. Every time a movie with him is announced, we can’t wait to watch it. Perhaps just as much as we can’t wait for the next police cam video to come out.
8 Tyler Perry
We have talked about Adam Sandler and how his brand of comedy is something that should have become history by now. But, Sandler has got nothing on Tyler Perry.
This is a man who has done the same movie literally almost a dozen times. And as boring as that might seem, people keep coming to watch. That is the only reason to explain his estimated $600 million net worth. This man has built an empire under the pretense of dressing up as an old woman and appealing to the audience’s love of laughing at stereotypes.
His use of those stereotypes has been criticized by people like Spike Lee, as well as journalists and the general public. An NPR journalist went as far as writing an open letter to Perry acknowledging his success, but also talking about how his shows could be demeaning.
Demeaning or not, until people stop secretly loving stereotypes and laughing, this guy is still going to keep hitting the jackpot over and over again with the same number.
7 Zack Snyder
Let’s shift our focus to someone who has become infamous recently. Zack Snyder has been in the business for quite a while. He has directed fan favorite movies like Watchmen, 300, and Sucker Punch. Nevertheless, we can make a long story short by saying that fans were less than pleased with what they got as the end product of one of the most anticipated movies of 2016, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Fans were expecting an epic adventure they would talk about for the next couple decades, just as people have and will keep talking about the Avengers. Instead, the Batman-Superman crossover was nothing short of a disaster. To put it in numbers, the movie got a score of 27 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
Still, a lot of people might not be clamoring his name yet, but you can be sure that the juggernaut hit that was Wonder Woman has made a lot of fans go back to secretly loving Snyder.
6 Jaden Smith
Being the son of one of the greatest actors ever to live has to put a lot of weight on your shoulders. Sure, the perks that come with the money and the countless opportunities that you inherently have must be nice. But, at the end of the day, it cannot be easy being Jaden Smith. His father is undoubtedly one of the greatest African-American actors of all time, and a lot of people were expecting young Jaden to follow Will’s footsteps. What they got, however, was the new Karate Kid.
Deep down, we all kind of liked the movie, and even if you are the most gung-ho old-school karate kid fan, you have to admit that Jaden’s final kick was better than Daniel’s. Nevertheless, people seem hellbent on hating on this kid regardless of how well he did. And, of course, After Earth did nothing but make his reputation even worse and feed more fuel to the haters.
5 Chris Brown
If you ever need to find a way to ruin your career, all you need to do is take a class at the Chris Brown Institute Of Anger Management. Yeah, yeah, we just made the name up, but it does sound catchy, doesn’t it?
Either way, Chris Brown is one of the guys who proved that no matter how talented you are, it is impossible for some people to contain their rage. Brown was on the top of the world, regarded as one of the most talented musicians of his generation, and dating one of the most beautiful women on the globe when he decided that it was time to show his true face. In a blink of an eye, he went from being a beloved musician to being that a-hole who beat up Rihanna. Then, there was the club fight against Drake’s crew and the Good Morning America backstage outburst.
It is easy to conclude that Brown is not the most stable of individuals, but most folks would be lying if they said they don’t secretly love watching his music videos.
4 Gwyneth Paltrow
Sometimes, life choices make a huge difference in defining how much people will lean towards hating you. There are a ton of artists who were beloved for most of their careers, only to make one choice that didn’t resonate too well with the public and eventually become hated celebrities. Gwyneth Paltrow is a great example of this.
This 44-year-old Hollywood star went from being an Academy Award and Golden Globe winner for her role in Shakespeare In Love to becoming someone people could not stand. Perhaps, that is not fair for society to do to Paltrow. After all, all she wants to do is help people better themselves. But at the same time, life gurus who don’t seem to understand that most people cannot spend $300 on a bathrobe are very high on the list of individuals you want to hate.
Nevertheless, while we may hate the life guru side of Gwyneth, we cannot hate on Pepper Potts.
3 Hayden Christensen
Have you ever been trashed so bad that at some point you had to quit your job?
Apparently, that is what happened to Hayden Christensen after he wore the skin of Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars. It cannot be easy to play such a larger-than-life character as early in your career as Christensen did. Still, it was astonishing to find out that he actually bought a farm after the release of Star Wars Episode III and decided he was done with Hollywood for a while.
“I guess I felt like I had this great thing in ‘Star Wars’ that provided all these opportunities and gave me a career, but it all kind of felt a little too handed to me,” he told the LA Times. “I didn’t want to go through life feeling like I was just riding a wave.”
As life-changing as the role might’ve been for him, a great many deal fans despised Christensen for what many deemed were unworthy prequels for Star Wars. But between you and me, you kind of liked him in those movies, didn’t you?
2 Justin Bieber
No. You are not looking away. You will sit through this and hear about how much you secretly love Justin Bieber. This kid has been around since he was...well...a kid. Bieber burst onto the scene with one of the best most annoying songs of all time. What middle-schooler didn’t have to deal with the fact they hated “Baby,” but at the same time loved that song? It was so catchy, it became inevitable that whenever it came up on the radio, you would sing along like a robot wired to do just that.
Eventually, Bieber grew up from that cute little kid with the emo-looking hair into, for lack of a better word, a d**k. Sorry, that might’ve been a little bit harsh. But still, this is a grown man who has done stuff like pee in a bucket at a restaurant, egg his neighbor’s house, and get into fights all around the globe. Nevertheless, secretly, we can’t help but love this guy because he is so talented. Just like in middle school, when his songs come up, you can’t help but sing along.
1 Charlie Sheen
Since we are part of the grand majority of human beings on this planet who believe actions deserve consequences, we are wired to hate people like Charlie Sheen, someone who skated through life enjoying the perks of fame doing drugs, hookers, and whatever else he could come up with.
Surprisingly enough, for the longest time, it seemed like Charlie would live up the life cheating and laughing at the world without karma ever biting him in the behind. Unfortunately, his fall was tougher than anybody would have ever wished on their worst enemy.
But, leaving sad subjects aside, the interesting thing about Charlie Sheen is that whether consciously or not, you always loved this guy. What kind of man does not wish to have the life Charlie Harper had in Two and a Half Men before his brother moved in? And if your answer to that question was none, let us break you the news: you love Charlie Sheen. You do because the two of them were basically the same person.
