Celebrities are not always known for making the best decisions. Even though they are always in the public eye, sometimes they seem to forget exactly how many people might be watching. With all the publicists and PR managers in the world, they can still take matters into their own hands and say or do the wrong thing from time to time.
Nowhere is that more true than on social media. Celebrities can easily take to Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat to say whatever they want to in that moment. They often take control of their own accounts, whether they are usually managed by PR or not, in order to make comments on things or share their day.
Snapchat in particular is a place where a lot of things can be posted that should not have been. The fact that the Snaps disappear after 24 hours, and after only one view if a private message, can tempt people into posting things that they normally wouldn’t. After a few drinks, a very late night, or a fun day out with friends, celebrities can be a bit too relaxed about what they say. After all, they are only human – and those kinds of situations can get the best of any of us. We can all say or do things that are not best advised. But when we do it, people might forget. The same is not true for celebrities.
Here are 15 occasions when celebrities ended up getting into hot water because of the Snaps that they posted.
15 Calum Hood Sent A Nude Selfie
Calum Hood, if you don’t know him, is one of the members of the Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer. 5SOS are known for having a younger fan base, so it’s particularly important that they keep things clean. Apparently, Calum didn’t get that memo. He sent a Snap in 2014 which revealed a lot more than his fans’ parents would want them to see. He actually recorded a short video in which he reveals his little Calum. He added the caption “? ” for good measure and then sent it to a fan. She then saved the video and uploaded it to Vine for everyone to see. Calum took the incident on the chin instead of trying to deny it or make excuses. He said, "I'm still just a teenage kid learning from mistakes :)" on Twitter. That’s true, but it probably didn’t help allay the concerns of the parents of the girl he sent it to.
14 Caroline Flack Let It Slip
The X Factor presenter Caroline Flack had a new haircut and decided to show it off to her fans. The best way to do that, of course, was to take a Snap at an angle which would show off the new bob fully, as well as the makeup which had just been done for her ahead of an appearance. What she failed to realize was that she had tilted the camera down a little too far, especially considering that she wasn’t wearing anything at the time. She had a serious case of nip slip – well, actually, pretty much an everything slip. Harry Styles’ ex quickly deleted the Snap once she had been notified, but it was up for far too long and the screenshots were quickly shared just about everywhere. While she had intended for the story to be all about her new hair, instead the headlines were dominated by something a little different and more embarrassing.
13 Kaitlyn Bristowe Spoiled The Bachelorette Finale
When you are on a reality TV show, one of the hard and fast rules that you have to live by is not to spoiler any aspects of the show before it comes out. Winners aren’t allowed to announce that they won. Losers aren’t allowed to speak up about their exit or comment on the show until it airs. When it comes to big reveals like the finale, every detail is kept on lockdown. That’s why Kaitlyn Bristowe made a serious boo-boo in June 2015, when she shared a video on Snapchat of herself in bed. Next to her just happened to be one of her contestants from Season 11. Spoiler alert! This was a pretty major fail for the show, as it came out before the finale had aired on television. We guess that Kaitlyn just couldn’t wait to brag. Well, sometimes you just get that swell of pride in the afterglow.
12 Tyler Posey Made Up His Coming-Out
The Teen Wolf star Tyler Posey managed to offend pretty much everyone on Snapchat in July 2016. He decided to come out as gay on the social network… as a joke, because he’s actually straight. Wow – what a great guy. He said on the video, “This is me…I’ve never felt more alive. I’m gay!”. After the inevitable backlash started, he took to Twitter to make an apology. He wrote, "I am a big proponent of love over hate, and standing together during divisive times. Although I'm not gay, I fully support the LGBTQ community. This was a moment intended to reflect that. And everyone, I am truly sorry to the people I've offended or lessened how big coming out is. I just want to spread love in this world.” That doesn’t sound like much of a real apology – more like an excuse intended to justify a prank that went wrong.
11 Kylie Jenner Admitted To Being High
Kylie Jenner practically lives her entire life on social media, so it’s probably no surprise that sooner or later she would let something slip that she shouldn’t have said. She’s flashed a fair few things, but since that runs in the family, no one has ever been particularly surprised. What did raise a few eyebrows, however, was when she released a video to Snapchat in which she allegedly said that she was “high as f---”. She claims that the word she said was actually good, not high, and that she was referring to the chicken that she was eating. She tweeted quickly to clear her name, but the debate has raged on about what she actually said. If she was admitting to trying drugs, she certainly wouldn’t be the first teen to do so. It’s also not uncommon for high people to say or do things that they aren’t supposed to.
10 Dani Mathers Fat-Shamed A Random Stranger
If you missed this story when it came out, you might well have been hiding under a rock or some such. Dani Mathers got herself into a world of trouble when she took the time in her day to fat-shame a random stranger. She took a photograph of a naked older woman in the changing rooms of the gym without her knowledge or permission. It included the caption, “If I can’t unsee this then you can’t either”. The LA Fitness gym immediately revoked her membership when the Snap shot around the world, and she was charged with a misdemeanour count of invasion of privacy. Needless to say, the former Playmate of the Year hasn’t seen her career shoot her into the A-list since then. She tweeted, “I'm sorry for what I did... I need to take some time to myself now to reflect on why I did this horrible thing.”
9 Cody Simpson Got Gigi Hadid In Trouble
Cody Simpson managed to land himself in the dog house by posting a video to his Snapchat which really made it look like Gigi Hadid was doing something very interesting. She has her face down literally on the desk in front of her, with a suspicious-looking line of white powder nearby. Naturally, a lot of people instantly assumed she was doing coke. For the record, Hadid has denied this, saying that she would have to be an idiot to do something like that while working at the Victoria’s Secret Spring Break Pink Party in Miami. However, not a lot of people believed her protestations. She clearly hasn’t suffered any fallout as her career is still going strong, but Simpson is now her former boyfriend – and if there had been any way to corroborate the post in March 2015 or make it clearer, she would certainly have felt the consequences.
8 Zoella Shocked Her Underage Fans
Zoella is another star who has a larger group of young fans – her YouTube followers tend to be teens and younger thanks to her wholesome and clean image. That didn’t stop her from posting a selfie to Snapchat just as she was going to bed. She was makeup free, wearing a plain white shirt as well as Calvin Klein underwear. Not much could be seen, but it still made a real splash among her fanbase. Many were outraged that she would share even this much given the age of her followers. This is a clear example of what Zoella thought was a totally innocent Snap – but which took on a different dimension when viewed through the eyes of her fans’ parents. Stars with younger fans need to remember that they should be wholesome at all times – and fully clothed – if they don’t want to get themselves into trouble on Snapchat.
7 Bella Thorne Forgot About Her Mirror
Bella Thorne is on Snapchat pretty much 24/7, and often shares longer Snaps like makeup tutorials. She spends so much time recording them that she probably doesn’t have enough time to give them the once-over before posting them. She made a big mistake when filming one of her makeup tutorials wearing nothing but a thong and some jewelry. There’s nothing wrong with that, since the tutorial was focused on her face. What she forgot was that there was a full-length mirror behind her, which allowed viewers to see everything. It’s not the first time that she has made a mistake with sending content on Snapchat. The 19-year-old was also victim of a leak when private messages were hacked and shared in which she posed topless. This actually happened more than once. Hopefully celebrities will soon start wising up and not taking these shots with their phones at all, as well as checking before posting.
6 Draymond Green Sent A Different Kind Of Selfie
When are male celebrities going to learn that sending inappropriate selfies to fans is nothing short of a guarantee that they will end up all over the internet? Draymond Green not only failed to learn that lesson, but he also managed to make an even bigger mistake by forgetting to check that the photo would go out privately. Instead of sending it to just one person, he sent it to his story, so all of his followers would be able to see it. It wasn’t up for long before it was taken down, but some enterprising soul saved it and you can still see Little Draymond in all its glory if you search around. He at first claimed to have been hacked to save face, but later admitted to it. He said: "We're all one click away from placing something in the wrong place. I suffered from that this morning." This wasn’t good news for the NBA star, who had already been in trouble for other misdemeanours recently.
5 Lewis Hamilton Snapped At Work
Lewis Hamilton got himself into all kinds of bother when he was caught Snapchatting on the job. Thankfully he wasn’t doing it behind the wheel of his racing car, but he was doing it during a press conference. The drivers are supposed to sit quietly and respectfully and wait for questions to come to them, but Lewis wasn’t having any of it during the 2016 Japanese Grand Prix conference. Members of the media called him out for goofing around with filters and posting what some considered to be offensive comments about how boring the conference was. He was also showing his screen to other drivers in the press conference and generally being disruptive. He didn’t give a full apology for the incident but rather acted like it wasn’t a big deal, which landed him in hot water with his bosses. The backlash was immediate and made him look pretty immature.
4 Nicola Hughes Reveals Her Boyfriend
Nicola Hughes was obviously feeling like taking a few selfies when she Snapped some shots in her bedroom. What she maybe didn’t realize was that her boyfriend, and Made in Chelsea star, Alex Mytton was standing right behind her and getting ready to dress after his shower. The angle at which she took the Snap suggests that she thought she was capturing an image of him in his towel, but he had already dropped it to the floor. She posted it probably without looking, then looked at her feed again, and quickly deleted it. Despite the fact that it was gone after less than a minute, someone was quick enough to take a screenshot. Judging by his pose, he was perhaps trying to playfully flash her, thinking that she would notice before she posted the X-rated shot. Unfortunately for him, she didn’t. Having said that, though, he doesn’t have much to be ashamed of in the uncensored version.
3 Megan Mckenna Got Dirty On Snap
Ex On The Beach may be one of the hottest summer reality TV shows, but it seems like the stars of the show are hungry for even more fame. Megan Mckenna and Jordan Davies are one of the couples to come out of the show, and they decided to go a little too far in one of their Snapchat sessions. Jordan filmed a collection of videos which showed Megan lying down on a couch. She was tired after going to a Wiz Khalifa concert the night before, but Jordan wasn’t going to let her get away with relaxing. He walked towards her and encouraged her to reach for his crotch, which she did. She appears to fondle him for some time before the clips end. It’s not clear whether she knew they were being filmed. The Snaps were eventually taken down, but Jordan definitely intended for them to go out to an audience. This was hailed as a whole new low for the reality stars, who first made waves when Megan had a love triangle during the show with Jordan and another man.
2 Marc Jacobs Sent A Private Snap To His Story
Even when you’re a rich and successful fashion designer, you can still be a little less tech-savvy. 53-year-old Marc Jacobs made a bit of a splash when he took a photograph of himself posing naked, and then added the caption, "It's yours to try". The final touch? Sending it to all 600,000 of his followers instead of the one person that it was meant for. "Yeah. I accidentally posted a pic of my bare ass and took it down," he eventually said after it happened. "I was flirting with someone I met on Instagram. Meant to send it by DM. Oops, my mistake. I apologize to anyone it offended. I'm a gay man. I flirt and chat with guys online sometimes. BIG DEAL!" Well, it could have been a bit more embarrassing – he could have been turned face-on to the camera. He definitely made a big mistake letting his followers, some of whom are undoubtedly underage, see this, though.
1 DJ Tigerlily Shared Too Much
In total fairness, DJ Tigerlily had no idea what she was going to be getting herself into when she posted this Snap. She playfully flashed the camera, opening her robe to show her naked body. However, she then edited the Snap to place emojis and draw over the image so that nothing inappropriate could be seen. This move made little difference when hackers managed to get into her account. They removed the censors that she had edited on and then released the uncensored image. She was pretty angry about the violation of her privacy which she never expected to happen. She posted a statement on Facebook saying that “the content has been ripped from Snapchat, edited and distributed and is being done so against my will [sic]”. She talked about it in terms of being a crime, and ended up donating $5,000 to charity as a result of the experience.
