It must be totally awesome to be a successful celebrity. Unless of course, you are currently in prison, then I would imagine the whole thing would be pretty awful. One day, you literally are on the top of the world, with everyone wanting to be around you, with plenty of money and fame. The next minute you're in prison, wondering what went wrong, or even worse, knowing what went wrong and wondering why you were such a total idiot.
I can't even imagine, to be honest. Some people just have it all handed to them, but they still have to go and make a total mess out of everything. Sitting in prison knowing you used to be rich and famous is pretty pathetic. Sometimes, it's drugs that bring celebrities down, other times, it's tax fraud, and sometimes, it's a crime of passion that takes down these celebrities.
What follows is a list of celebrities that you may have forgotten all about, or possibly wondered what they're doing. Well wonder no more, all of them are in jail or in prison. Feel bad for them if you wish, but I have to say that I don't.
15 Oscar Pistorius And The "Intruder"
Everyone remembers Oscar Pistorius — he was the Olympic athlete who competed in sprinting as a double amputee. What a great story right? Not so much — he ended up killing his girlfriend, shooting her 4 times through a bathroom door, saying he thought she was an intruder. This was a joke of a defence and he was convicted. Originally, the sentence was only 6 years in prison, but it was recently upped to 13 years, which still isn't a whole lot when you consider the crime. Pistorius literally had it all, fame, success and a super hot girlfriend, but for some reason, he decided to kill her and make up a totally lame story. Hopefully he has fun in prison.
14 Michael Jace's Jealousy Led To His Downfall
Michael Jace is best known for starring in The Shield, sadly the other thing he is well known for is shooting his wife to death in front of their children because she wanted to divorce him and he thought she was in love with someone else. Guys like that are straight up awful, and it's no wonder his wife wanted to leave him. After he killed her, he first called the police and then he called her father and told him to get the boys. He was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison, which isn't long enough for someone like him, but then again, he gets to wake up every day in prison knowing that he lost everything.
13 Meek Mill Isn't The Wisest
If you are a big fan of rap, you might be wondering what happened to Meek Mill, the rapper from Philadelphia was having quite a career for a while, until he got arrested and put on probation. Some people, when they get put on probation, decide they are going to straighten up and do what they need to do to stay out of trouble, others decide they are going to continue to act like idiots. Meek is without a doubt one of the latter types. He originally was put on probation way back in 2008 for a gun-related charge, and more recently, was arrested for a misdemeanour assault in March and also for reckless endangerment. He is currently serving 2 to 4 years in prison.
12 Anthony Wiener Never Learns His Lesson
Anthony Wiener was well on his way to a very promising career in politics when he was taken down by a s*xting scandal. He then decided to make a comeback and ran for Mayor in New York City, and was actually doing well, when he was taken down by yet another s*xting scandal. Then he was actually getting work as a commentator on network news shows when he was once again taken down by a s*xting scandal, except this time, it was with a 15-year-old girl. Okay, honestly, what the heck is wrong with this guy? Whatever it is, he can tell it to the counselors in prison — he was sentenced to 21 months in federal prison. And yes, I know I made it all of this way without saying how funny his name is considering the crime.
11 Rae Carruth Didn't Want To Be A Father
Rae Carruth is a total loser, there is no doubt about that. He had a nice career in the NFL until he did something totally messed up. According to the Charlotte Observer, "Carruth wanted to kill his on-and-off girlfriend because she was 8 months pregnant with his child and he didn't want to pay child support. He hired a hitman to pull the trigger." His girlfriend died, but his child survived but has permanent damage. Carruth only got 18 months for doing something that is incredibly terrible. He could actually be released as early as next year. When he is released, his grandmother who's been raising the baby is planning on standing at the gates to meet him.
10 Shelley Malil Wasn't Remorseful
You probably know Shelley Malil best for his work when he starred in The 40-Year-Old Virgin. What you probably don't know about him is that he is spending life in prison for trying to murder a former girlfriend after he found her drinking wine with another man. He stabbed her 20 times, but she survived. He tried to play that he was remorseful during the trial, but his ex-girlfriend wasn't having it saying, "During the course of the trial, it became clear he was an actor, but not a very good actor at that. His testimony was lie after lie after lie." Well, he might have been an actor once, but he sure isn't anymore, unless he is going to appear in a prison theatre production.
9 Phil Spector Is A Control Freak
Of all the people on this list, Phil Spector is probably the creepiest person you'll ever read about. Spector is a famous music producer who had a history of being insanely jealous and super weird around women. Actress Lana Clarkson was found dead in a chair in his mansion after she had been shot in the mouth. He was sentenced to 19 years to life for murder. There was no real reason that he killed her, but we speculate that he pulled a gun on her so that she wouldn't leave, since he apparently did that on more than one occasion to his ex-wife, Ronnie Spector. This is one celebrity we couldn't be happier is in prison.
8 Ricardo Medina Took His Role As A Samurai Too Seriously
Former Power Ranger Ricardo Medina was charged with killing his roomie with a Samurai sword. Oddly enough, Medina is best known for being in Power Rangers Samurai. The two were supposedly fighting over Medina's girlfriend. After he killed his roommate, Medina said on a 911 call, "Damn it, Josh. Why did you do this, man? Why did you make me do this?" Medina took a plea deal because he was facing life in prison and wound up only getting 6 years, which is obviously not much of a sentence for taking another person's life. One can only hope that he is having a bit of a hard time in there. I truly doubt that the other prisoners are going to be all that impressed by a former Power Ranger, but who knows?
7 C-Murder Went Way Too Far
One has to think that going by the name C-Murder is not going to do you a lot of favors with a judge and jury if you are on trial or have been arrested for murder. This seemed to be the case when C-Murder was sentenced to life in prison after killing a teenager by shooting him in the chest during a fight outside of a club in 2002. C-Murder had to pay the victim's family more than a million dollars in a civil suit because of the killing, but obviously, no amount of money will ever take back the horrific crime he committed.
6 Suge Knight's Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
Music mogul Suge Knight who started the famous Death Row Records has been rolling around on the edge of criminal activity for a long time, so long actually, that one might think he would never go to prison, but that's where he is. He is scheduled to go on trial in January for murder and attempted murder for running over a man with his truck and killing him during a hit and run. Knight has a long criminal history involving acts of violence and threats, but for the most part, has gotten away with it. This time, it might be different, and Suge might wind up in prison for a long time, and maybe for life, which is a bit ironic considering the name of the record company in which he made his fortune.
5 Abby Lee Miller Never Had Enough
While a lot of these celebrities are on this list and in prison because they committed some really horrible crimes, some of them are locked up just because they are greedy and think the rules do not apply to them. One of these people is Dance Moms star Abby Lee Miller, who was charged with 20 counts of bankruptcy fraud, concealment of bankruptcy assets, and false bankruptcy declarations. She ended up being sentenced to a bit over a year in prison. I don't get people like this at all. I get if you might be late on taxes, if you are super poor, but if you have money, just pay your taxes for crying out loud. Do you want to risk being locked up because you want even more money than you already have? Talk about lame.
4 Jared Fogle Is A Creep
Of all the famous celebrities that are in prison right now, none of them have taken a bigger fall then Jared Fogle. He became famous as the Subway pitchman, who in theory, lost a ton of weight by eating at Subway. Eating tons of bread and cheese is not the way to go if you want to drop a lot of weight, but I digress. Fogle got arrested on child pornography charges. He also crossed state lines to pay for sex with minors. He is now doing around 15 years in prison. He was recently beaten up by another inmate, in part because he supposedly had hired bodyguards and was flashing a lot of money around. One might feel bad for him if he wasn't such a dirtbag.
3 Apollo Nida Is Quite The Ladies' Man
If you are familiar with The Real Housewives of Atlanta then you know Apollo Nida, who is the estranged husband of Phaedra Parks. He is currently serving an 8-year sentence on mail, wire, and bank fraud charges. He was facing 30 years, but he cooperated with investigators. He is in the process of divorcing Parks, but is now supposedly engaged to marry another woman, who visits him on weekends. One has to wonder why a woman would possibly decide to get married to a guy that is in prison. Listen, I know that sometimes it seems like you really love someone and that the person is the only one for you, but seriously, if that person is in prison, don't be crazy and move on.
2 Joe Giudice Was Too Greedy
Speaking of reality stars who are in prison, Joe Giudice was sentenced, along with his wife Teresa, for various counts of mail, wire, and bankruptcy fraud. The two stars of The Real Housewives of New Jersey were both busted for many financial crimes, including hiding assets while filing for bankruptcy and not filing tax returns. Seriously, I have no sympathy for people with money that go to prison purely because they want more. Teresa is now out, but Joe still has a fair amount of time to do. She says of her husband's time in prison, "He's lost over 35 pounds. He's doing the same thing I did: reading a lot of books, exercising, keeping his head focused on doing what he has to do." Too bad he didn't keep his head focused on what he had to do before he got arrested.
1 Sam Hurd Had A Second Job
Sam Hurd had a very promising career in the NFL going for a while until he decided to try and buy 5 to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana from an undercover cop. Apparently, he was going to sell all of this on the streets of Chicago. Brilliant right? He ended up telling the court, "I regret not thinking about the consequences. I made some dumb, very bad decisions." Well, of course, he regrets it — he got caught. Hurd was sentenced to 15 years in prison, which seems like a lot, but then again, when someone is as stupid as he is, punishment is sure to come.
