15 Celebrities Who Stole Their Friend's Fame

Celebrities come in all different shapes and sizes, from blondes to brunettes to egos and even bigger egos. They can be old (but not too old) and they can be young (young enough), they can be large (but not too large) and they can be little (little enough). They are the main focus of our celebrity-obsessed society and role models to people all over the world. Much like a never-ending treadmill of the rich and the famous, Hollywood produces these superstars at surprising speed. But where do they all actually come from? Either working their way up from the bottom of the celebrity laundry pile, to becoming instantly famous through reality TV or social media, it can be pretty easy to get famous these days. Anyone can do it. In fact, a number of celebrities themselves have helped their own friends and best pals become famous, all through the kindest of their own hearts...

But what happens when the friend gets more famous than the original celebrity? Known for its dog eat dog attitude to life, Hollywood can be extremely bleak. With friendships and relationships constantly ruined due to the fierce competition that exists in Hollywood, it seems people really are willing to harm each other in order to succeed. Ruthless to say the least, Hollywood can make a friendship just as quick as it can break it. Just ask Taylor Swift. So, Here are 15 celebrities who stole their friend's fame.

15 Beyoncé And Destiny's Who?

Nowadays it is a truth universally acknowledged that Beyoncé is the Queen of the entertainment world. Singer, dancer, actor and all-round exceptional performer, Beyoncé can seemingly do no wrong. However, how did she become so famous in the first place? One part of famed singing group Destiny's Child (members also included LeToya Luckett, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and later Michelle Williams) it has been suggested that Beyoncé used the group to develop her skills and further her career. With the management intending Beyoncé to go solo all along, it was only a matter of time before Beyoncé was finally ready and released into the sole industry. Accused of dropping her bandmates without a care in the world, Beyoncé was instantly successful. Sadly, the rest of Destiny's Child faded into the background and were never to be seen again. Kind of, I mean Kelly did OK I guess.

14 Gwyneth Paltrow And Winona Who?

Believe it or not, Winona Ryder and Gwyneth Paltrow were once the best of friends. That's right, taking over Hollywood during the mid-nineties, the two were even dating celebrity BFFs Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The perfect foursome, the couples would often double date and were often seen hanging out at each other's houses. In fact, during one date in particular, Paltrow stumbled upon the script for Shakespeare in Love which had originally been intended for Ryder to read. Immediately interested, Paltrow auditioned the role only to get the part and eventually win an Oscar for her work. Obviously unhappy with her friend's betrayal, Ryder was intent on destroying her one time best friend's career. Referring to the incident years later, without naming any names, of course, Paltrow stated, "back in the day, I had a 'frenemy' who, as it turned out, was pretty hellbent on taking me down. I restrained myself from fighting back. I tried to take the high road. But one day I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and happiness."

13 Ben Stiller And The Frat Pack

Dubbed the "frat pack" a play on the term "rat pack", Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, Jack Black, Owen Wilson and brother Luke, made up the majority of the movies released in the mid-nineties. However, it was Ben Stiller who managed to cement his position as head of the group, even going on to star in a number of successful movies after the fad had finished. But how? Stepping on his best friends of course! As the laughs began to dwindle, Stiller began hatching a plan to escape by wisely choosing family favorite movies instead and deterring his co-stars from doing the same. Starring in classics such as Madagascar and Night at the Museum, Stiller became a household name, while the rest of the frat pack continued on in movies that just weren't funny anymore.

12 Reese Witherspoon And Ryan Who?

Released to rave reviews in 1999, Cruel Intentions was one of the biggest hits of the year. An adaption of the French classic Dangerous Liaisons (Les Liaisons Dangereuses) the movie showcased the steamy real-life relationship of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe who had just gotten together a year earlier. At the time of the movie's release, Phillippe was a major star with girlfriend Witherspoon still yet to make it to the big time. Soon after their marriage the following year, Witherspoon was cast in the successful and hilarious Legally Blonde. The movie made Witherspoon an instant star while Phillippe suddenly experienced a lack of interest. Going on to star in a number of award-winning movies, Witherspoon eventually won an Oscar for her role as June Carter Cash in the popular movie Walk the Line. Sadly Witherspoon and Phillippe divorced sometime later with Witherspoon remaining the most bankable star of the two.

11 Justin Timberlake And N’Sync Who?

Popular among the ladies as well as the men, Justin Timberlake is probably one of the most likeable dudes in the entertainment industry. Loved and adored worldwide, Timberlake is a man of many talents. Actor, singer and professional dancer, Timberlake is also quite the comedian and has featured a number of times on the popular late-night show, Saturday Night Live. But how did he become famous in the first place? Beginning his career in the world famous Disney club, Timberlake was already a familiar face. However, it was boyband N'sync that really cultivated his star status. Known for their in sync (get it?) dance moves and wistful harmonies the band was incredibly famous. With Timberlake stealing the show, it was only a matter of time before he would go solo, ditching the band in favor of a less cheesy image.

10 Jennifer Garner And Scott Who?

Believe it or not back in the early 00s Jennifer Garner was a massive nobody. Only famous due to her extremely famous boyfriend Scott Foley, Garner was nothing more than a TV extra (who occasionally had a line or two). Actually, Foley was so famous that he was at one point the nation's hottest heartthrob, mostly due to his stints in teen dramas such as Dawson's Creek and Felicity. In fact, it was the set of Felicity where the two first met, falling in love and eventually getting married. However, not long after Garner managed to hit the big time and was cast in the TV series Alias. Suddenly everything changed and Garner was catapulted into Hollywood stardom. Sadly the two ended up divorcing, with Foley's career taking a definite tumble. And Garner? Well she married Ben Affleck and that's just a whole other thing for a whole other time.

9 Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, And Rupert Who?

Where did it all go, Ron?! Get it? Shooting to stardom at just eleven years old, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint quickly became the most recognizable faces in the world. Going on to star in all eight Harry Potter movies, the three were not only best friends on screen but best pals off-screen too. With Grint hailed as the best actor of the three, even Martin Scorsese commented on the red-haired actor's talents, it was expected that he would also end up the most successful. However, this was not to be, with Watson and Radcliffe instead scooping up the major roles, leaving Grint restricted to supporting roles and smaller productions. Now said to prefer partying on his Harry Potter millions instead of auditioning for roles and furthering his career, the future doesn't look so bright for the once beloved actor.

8 Gwen Stefani And Gavin Who?

Before shacking up with country hunk Blake Shelton, pop queen Gwen Stefani was married to Bush guitarist and lead singer Gavin Rossdale for a whopping 13 years. First getting together during the mid-nineties, Rossdale was the more famous of the two, with his band extremely successful all over the world. In fact, the couple was first introduced when Stefani's then band No Doubt was supporting his. However, things began to dramatically change when Stefani suddenly went solo, releasing a number of successful and popular albums. Sadly the same didn't happen for Rossdale, with Bush breaking up around the same time. Now divorced, Rossdale turned to acting as well as appearing on the UK version The Voice. And as for Gwen? Well, it is pretty clear to see who won that breakup...

7 Kim Kardashian And Paris Who?

These days Kim Kardashian is the most famous person in the world. Along with the rest of her family and her also extremely famous husband, Kim can seemingly do no wrong. But where exactly did she come from? Back in the day, Kim was only really known as 'that drunk friend pictured with Paris Hilton'. Obviously wanting more, Kim looked to the hotel heiress for tips on how to hit the big time. With sex tape "one night in Paris" then doing the rounds, Kim was impressed by the attention that Paris was receiving. Not long after and ever so conveniently, a sex tape appeared starring Kim and her then-boyfriend Ray J. And the rest they say is history...

Kim later denied all knowledge of the tape's release, although it has been suggested that Kim's mother and self-named 'Momager' was the one who brought the tape to the world's attention. Scandalous!

6 Jennifer Aniston And Courteney Who?

Around the time Friends was launched in the mid-nineties, Courteney Cox was by far the most famous cast member. Having starred in a number of movies beforehand as well as a reoccurring role in the popular sitcom Family Ties, it was suggested that Cox would be the one to bring in the viewers. However, this was not to be, with Jennifer Aniston instead scooping up the headlines. Providing exceptional comedic timing as well as managing to obtain the most memorable storylines, Aniston was the golden girl of the shows ten-year run. In fact, Aniston also managed to successfully transition into the movie business, with her Friends co-stars not quite as lucky. Thankfully Aniston and Cox have remained the best of friends, just like their onscreen counterparts.

5 Nicole Richie And Paris Who?

Long before Taylor Swift and her "girl squad", Paris Hilton was knocking around with her very own crew of celebrities. Often pictured partying with the likes of Lindsay Lohan, Kim Kardashian, Mischa Barton (remember her?) and Nicole Richie, Hilton was the queen of the party girl socialites. Famed for her friendship with Richie in particular, the two went on to star in the hilarious reality TV show The Simple Life. Extremely popular, the show portrayed their incredibly close friendship. But make no mistake, the focus was on Paris. However, like all good things, the friendship came to an end with Paris and Nicole going on to seriously hate each other. No longer able to keep up the socialite act, Paris disappeared into the abyss. Richie, however, rose to the top and has been riding a successful career ever since.

4 Miley Cyrus And Billy Ray Who?

Believe it or not, before Miley Cyrus there was Billy Ray Cyrus, the country and Western sweetheart who broke the hearts of many around the mid-nineties. That's right, famed for the hit song Achy Breaky Heart, which has been translated into more than 100 languages, Billy Ray was a huge star. In fact, Billy Ray was so famous that his debut album was one of the biggest selling country albums of all times as well as receiving critical claim. However, Billy's life changed forever when daughter Miley (original name Destiny Hope) suddenly became much more famous than him. Now a worldwide international superstar, mostly thanks to her father who first introduced her into show business, Miley is not only much more successful than her Dad but also ten times richer.

3 Hilary Swank And Chad Who?

As well as being the younger brother of Hollywood hunk Rob Lowe, Chad also attended the same high school as Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, and Sean Penn. Hardly the greatest name to have come out of that high school, Chad spent the majority the 1980s appearing in a number of TV movies and short-lived sitcoms. However, in 1993 Chad hit the big time and received an Emmy award for his role TV series Life Goes On. Around the same time he met (and later married) then-lesser known actress Hilary Swank who had just been fired from the popular TV drama Beverley Hills 90210. Definitely the more famous of the two, mostly down to his well-known brother, Chad was still trying to catch his big break. However, not long after their marriage, Hilary starred in the Oscar-winning movie, Boys Don't Cry, which garnered her an Academy Award. Famously forgetting to thank her husband during her acceptance speech, rumors quickly began to spread. The couple divorced in 2006, with Swank now one of the most bankable actresses in Hollywood, and Chad? Who knows.

2 Taylor Swift And Everyone

Famed for her "girl squad" that consists of celebrities such as Gigi Hadid, Selena Gomez, and Lorde, Taylor Swift is a friend to many. However, although mostly known for her scathing attacks on past boyfriends through her music, Swift has also managed to fall out with a few of her closest friends. With it said that Swift befriends or dates people on the basis that it will make her more famous, the evidence suggests that the rumors might actually be true. For instance, when dating Harry Styles, Swift swiftly wrote about the incident which resulted in huge record sales for her fifth album 1989. And, when breaking up with DJ and record producer Calvin Harris, Swift swiftly moved on with actor Tom Hiddleston, which generated yet best selling record. So, for those who are thinking about being friends with Taylor Swift? Think carefully before you do so.

1 Matt Damon And Ben Who?

Often pictured with their hands all over one another, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have been pals since the tender age of just ten years old. Rising to prominence after writing and starring in the successful Good Will Hunting in 1997, the pair even received an Oscar for their hard work. However, although the two were tipped to become even more successful, it was only Damon who seemed to get the memo, with Affleck instead making a number of terrible and outlandish decisions. That's right, preferring the Hollywood limelight instead of the actual craft, Affleck began a relationship with Jennifer Lopez which resulted in the popular hybrid, "Bennifer". Going on to star in a number of box office bombs as well as a stint in rehab, the couple eventually split a mere four days before they were to be married. And Damon? Oh, well, he was just hanging out with George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Affleck's younger and much more stable brother, Casey. Ouch.
