It used to be mad love. Those are lyrics from Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood,” the alleged beef record directed towards Katy Perry. If you haven’t heard about the Taylor Swift and Katy Perry beef, you’re either living under a rock or… that’s it. You have to be living under a rock because it’s literally everywhere you go. Social media, the news, and of course celebrity gossip pages can’t get enough of this girl fight. Why? Because it’s between two of the biggest pop stars in the game, duh. Who doesn’t know Taylor Swift? Katy Perry? If those names don’t ring a bell you must be really comfortable, Patrick Star. Get it? Because he lives under a rock. No? Okay.
Either way, the infamous Swift/Perry beef has been going on for a few years and it seems to be coming to an end, or is it? Katy Perry recently announced that she was no longer beefing with Taylor Swift and that she wished her well and forgives her and apologizes and blah, blah. Swift hasn’t responded. Yet. The former besties have been on and off, mostly off, since 2009. The drama stems from bad business, if you let Swift tell it, or a diss track, if you’re listening to what Perry has to say. Well, wherever it comes from everyone wants to know whether they’ll be friends again or continue to spew bad blood about each other. In the midst of it all, here’s ten pictures of the frenemies before the beef, and five times we thought they were never, ever, ever getting back together.
15 When We Were Young
In 2008, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry appeared together on the red carpet for the 2008 MTV Video Music awards. Taylor Swift worked the red carpet as a fashion correspondent for the show, and Perry and Miley Cyrus were there to discuss, well, fashion. Katy Perry told whoever was listening that she had actually went thrifting and put the outfit together herself, also stating that she didn’t have a lot of money yet. Oh how the times have changed.
Oh, did we mention that all three pop stars (Swift had recently switched over from country) were up for the same Best New Artist award? It was jokingly mentioned that the girls would have to fight to see who would win, but then stated that they would never because they all loved each other! Well, now two of the three can’t stand each other and they all ended up losing to Tokio Hotel anyway.
14 "Can I Have A Lock Of Your Hair?"
The following year, Perry and Swift were photographed together at the 2009 Grammys and, according to Perry, they shared a dressing room with… you guessed it, Miley Cyrus. The bestie trio strikes again. This time, things got a little weird and it makes us think Katy Perry may have a little crazy running through her veins. After an iHeartRadio performance years later, Perry was asked a question by a lucky fan about what she keeps in her purse. She answered that she keeps nothing in her big, empty purse but then went on to tell a tale of how she got a lock of both Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus’ hair back at the 2009 Grammys.
She recalled the 2009 event and told her fans that she asked Miley and Swift for a lock of hair in the dressing room, which was “creepy, but awesome.” Or, you know, just creepy. But the girls didn’t seem to mind and gave her the hair, which she proceeded to attach each piece to a bow and put them in her bag. Alrighty then.
13 Waking Up In London
Later that year, Perry and Swift were spotted out having dinner together at the Hakkasan restaurant in London. They had both performed earlier at England’s V Fest and decided to share some girl time with each other. After dinner, the ladies hugged and left in separate cars. On the way back to her hotel, Taylor Swift tweeted that Katy Perry really puts the “fun in Fundon.” Perry tweeted back “LYLAS!” which to our understanding means "love you like a sister" and that she would see her at the VMAs. Oh, and also TS is an angel. The cuteness overload just makes you want to vomit rainbows. Photographers caught the special hug moment, which actually looks a little awkward seeing as how Perry is grabbing Swift’s elbow. But we’ve shown that she can be a little different from everyone else, or maybe it’s just my perception of what a hug is supposed to (and not supposed to) be.
12 Go Katy, It's Ya Birthday!
Katy Perry celebrated her birthday with a star-studded group of people including pop stars, actors, and rappers. The party was held at The Beach on Sunset, which was transformed into Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory to go with its colorful theme. She asked all of her guests to dress in white, but no one knew that they would be sprayed and splattered with neon paint. Wait. You mean, I wore my best white dress to get it ruined... on purpose? Ugh. It was reported that Diddy had his assistant go and get him more pants. I completely feel you, Diddy. Perry even had her nails painted to include pictures of Oompa Loompas to fit the theme. Looks like she went all out. Not even best friend Taylor Swift or boyfriend at the time Russell Brand knew about the paint, and at the end of the event he didn't seem to look too happy about it all. Ruined clothes don't make me happy either. The party ended up being shut down by the fire marshal because it got too crazy and messy. What a bummer.
On April 15, 2010 Taylor Swift was nearing the end of her Fearless tour and performing at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Her fans were going crazy because... well, Taylor Swift. She starts to sing the song "Hot N Cold," the audience is singing along and then boom! Katy Perry slowly makes her entrance and the crowd goes bananas. She comes out on the stage and the two finish the song like besties do. After the performance, Taylor Swift tweeted "Surprise guest at Staples Center: @katyperry!! We sang Hot N Cold and jumped up and down a lot. Katy! LA! I will always love you!" at 4:53 the next morning. That's what you call a real friend, instead of sleeping like normal people she's up tweeting one of her favorite people in the world. It's times like these we're just like come on guys. Make up already.
Oh, and we know what you're thinking, Perez Hilton looks super creepy in this picture. Luckily the ladies are gorg so it kind of offsets him a bit.
10 Friends, The Real F Word
The next year Katy Perry and Taylor Swift were shown goofing around and having deep conversations at the 2010 Grammy Awards. That year, Swift went home with four awards, and Perry though nominated, took home none. This was also a monumental moment for Taylor Swift: she became the youngest artist to win Album of the Year. In an interview a few months later, Katy Perry praised her bestie by saying “Sometimes, I really feel like I’m more of a Taylor Swift. She tells stories, and I think that’s why she resonates with a lot of people. She hits the hidden chord in them [where they say], ‘oh my God, I’ve been through that too,’ or, ‘you said it in a way I could never explain.'” It looks like she really cared about her friend, and it makes you wonder how they ended up the way they are now. Don’t worry; we’ll get there.
9 Add A Little Brand To The Mix
Yeah, we know it's about Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, but how could we forget Russell Brand? He's hot too! Katy's beau turned husband turned ex-husband was also in attendance at the 2010 Grammys. The two, at the time, were recently engaged. Reports say they met at the 2008 VMAs, but Katy Perry was at the time in a relationship with Travie McCoy. Once they ended, and she and Brand met again, they started flirting heavily and got the ball rolling on what would end up being a 14 month marriage. During the 2009 VMAs, Perry was part of the act that ended up introducing the master of ceremonies Brand. Later that year on New Year's Eve, Brand proposed to Perry in India and she said yes. A little soon for our taste, but you can't put a time on true love! Or maybe you can, because only 14 months later, the two called it quits with Brand filing for divorce stating "irreconcilable differences."
8 Who Runs The World? Girls!
Their next appearance together in front of the cameras came in 2011 at the American Music Awards. Both Katy Perry and Taylor Swift were nominated for the top award: Artist of the Year. Swift went home with the prize, and Perry was super happy for her and gave her the biggest hug. The duo was also photographed with pink haired Nicki Minaj, who won Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist and Album in the same category, and Swift’s new best friend Selena Gomez. Opening the show, Nicki Minaj performed her hit song, at the time, "Super Bass" and apparently T. Swift and gal pal Selena Gomez rapped and danced along the entire time. Who knew Taylor Swift had mad rap skills? Later on, we'll talk about the Twitter catfight that almost happened between Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj, but for now let's just enjoy this group of girl power.
7 Take Two
Same event, different wardrobe. At least for Katy Perry. This is actually one of the last times that the ladies were spotted together before "the beef" started. Katy Perry went home with her own award that night, a Special Achievement Award, for having five #1 singles from one album. What an accomplishment, seriously. Katy Perry also sang her newest song "The One That Got Away" a cappella and received a standing ovation from a bunch of people in the crowd. We assume Swift was included in the lot. It's nice to see friends support each other, even though they won't even sitting in the same room now. To continue to show her love, Katy Perry also sent out video congratulations to Taylor Swift calling her inspiring and really nice. She also mentioned that she wants her cat, Meredith. Oh yeah, they’re both avid cat lovers. Who would expect any different from these two?
6 The Drama Begins...
So here we are, two years later at the 2013 Grammy Awards. The last photo showing Perry and Swift buddied up was back in 2011 and questions began to arise on if the women were still friends or not. At the time of this photo, Perry was dating Swift's ex-boyfriend John Mayer. Maybe that's what started the feud? According to Taylor Swift, it wasn't. She stated that it wasn't about a guy, but that it was actually professional. Here they are, shaking wrists (seriously, wrists and not hands) like everything is fine, but according to the timeline of how things were going, things weren't fine. They were actually far from fine. Swift stated in a 2014 Rolling Stones interview that Perry (she didn't name her, but it wasn't hard to figure out) was the inspiration behind her hit song "Bad Blood" because she did something "so horrible." We find out that the horrible thing was recruiting backup dancers from Swift's tour to join Perry's. How could she, right?
5 Taylor Was A Rolling Stone
In a 2014 Rolling Stones interview, Taylor goes more in depth on her relationship with Katy Perry, again not mentioning her by name. She said throughout their friendship, she didn't really know if they were actually friends or not and Perry would just come up to her at awards shows and say something and walk away. She also mentioned that they were straight-up enemies and that Katy Perry tried to sabotage her tour by hiring "a bunch of people" from under her. The bunch of people is three backup dancers that worked with Perry before they worked with Swift. One dancer, Lockhart Brownlie, confirmed that he and two others were on tour with Taylor Swift but they weren't really dancing much so when Katy Perry asked, they agreed to join her tour because they were like family and they had performed together for over two years. So in the end they had to ask themselves where does their loyalty lie, with family or Taylor Swift?
4 Mean Girls Tweet Too
In response to Taylor Swift's interview, Katy Perry sent out the above tweet. For those who don't know who Regina George is, she is queen mean girl in the movie Mean Girls starring Lindsy Lohan. Regina, played by Rachel McAdams, was cold-hearted and didn't care about anyone but herself, no matter what. She did whatever she had to do in order to get her way. Perry's tweet didn't mention Swift by name, but again, we know what's what. I'm sure you also know that the tweet is also in reference to a wolf in sheep's clothing, pretending to be one of the crew, and when they're most vulnerable, the wolf preys on the poor sheep. So not only is saying Swift is a mean girl, but she's also saying that she pretended to be her friend this whole time waiting for a chance to attack her. Or are we reading too far into this tweet?
3 Now We've Got Bad Blood...
Taylor Swift released the "Bad Blood" video, and this added a lot of fuel to fire that was once Swift and Perry's best friendship. In the video, Selena Gomez plays Swifts enemy. She's wearing a short black wig with bangs, remind you of anyone? Gomez and Swift's characters are fighting off bad guys but when they're done, Gomez double crosses her and kicks her out of a window. Taylor Swift has a very creative mind because the video and its concept are both amazing. Not saying we're #TeamTaylor, we just know good art when we see it. So the video continues and she's nursed back to health and then trains and gathers all of her kick-ass crew for revenge against Gomez's character with the video ending with them punching each other in the face. A few of our favorite from the video include, but aren't limited to, Mariska Hargitay, Zendaya, Ellie Goulding, and Cindy Crawford. Taylor Swift has a lot of women in her corner.
2 Oops, I Thought You Were Talking About Me
After the nominees for the 2015 VMAs came out, Nicki Minaj took to Twitter to show her frustration that she hadn't been selected as a nominee for Video of the Year. She tweeted "If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year." People automatically assumed (and still assume) that she was talking about Taylor Swift. Swift responded to Nicki Minaj saying "I’ve done nothing but love & support you. It’s unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..” She obviously felt that the tweet was directed towards her, but Minaj denied ever tweeting about her saying that she loves her, but she should also speak on the matter. Seeing as how Swift was the only woman up for the award, it's hard to deny that the message was indeed for her. Katy Perry puts her two cents in with the above tweet, referring to the "Bad Blood" fiasco. I mean... she has a point.
1 Beef On The Grill
Katy Perry recently appeared on Carpool Karaoke with host James Corden. They sang a few tunes together, danced a bit, and then came the beef conversation. Perry stated that Taylor Swift started the beef and it was time for her to finish it. She also stated the reason behind the fallout, which we explained before about the backup dancers. She said that she tried to reach out to Swift but she wouldn't talk to her. "I got a full shutdown and then she writes a song about me." We knew it! Finally, the confirmation is there that "Bad Blood" was definitely about Katy Perry even though it was completely obvious when the song came out. She then stated that it was time for the beef to be over and Corden asked if Swift called a truce, would she accept. She said that she would, but for every action there's a reaction. Uh... okay? Then she went on to say that together, not divided, women can heal the world. That part we agree on. In a recent interview with Arianna Huffington, Katy Perry apologized for the beef and said she's ready to let it all go. Here's to hoping.
