Celebrity couples come and go, but there will always be showbiz pages of tabloid magazines that will be reporting on celeb breakups because it seems that celebrity couples never last, and even when they do, there is always scandalous something to report.
There have been a number of couples who have been pushed together because they have appeared in TV shows or films, only for their relationships to fail, which then has an impact on their career. Some couples manage to end things amicably and are then able to continue working together if they are cast in a TV show together and have a contract to fulfil. That being said, there are also a number of couples who have ended their relationship in the roughest of ways, which then meant that the duo could no longer be in the same room, let alone work together on a TV or film project.
Different circumstances affect certain stars, but it seems that there have been a number of exes who have been asked to work together after a breakup, and it comes down to the couple and whether or not they feel that they can still be friends after they were once so much more than that.
The following list looks at celebrity couples that were able to work together following their breakup, as well as a number of couples who decided that they never wanted to work with their former spouse again.

15 Worked Together: Jennifer Lawrence And Nicholas Hoult
Jennifer was quite emotional following the split since she considered Nicholas a long-term boyfriend after they dated for more than five years. She stated that her break-up came just as work on popular series The Hunger Games came to an end, as well, and it was quite hard for her to deal with this all at once. The two were reunited on-screen back in 2015 when they returned to their roles in X-Men: Apocalypse. At the very least, it seems that the couple managed to remain friends who are still able to work together on-screen even if they're not together off it.
14 Worked Together: Cameron Diaz And Justin Timberlake
Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake began dating in 2003 after they met at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards. The couple were one of the most high profile Hollywood relationships and were surrounded by rumours of a break-up throughout their relationship until they finally announced that they had parted ways in December 2006.
As actors, sometimes you will be asked to work with people you don't necessarily like, but it seems that there isn't any bad blood following the split between these two, since they were able to work together once again in 2011 when they were both cast in the film Bad Teacher. Both stars have moved onto new relationships since then and have seemingly managed to remain friends. They are setting a great example to other couples who can move on and do the same thing.
13 Refused: Rachel McAdams And Ryan Gosling
Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling famously appeared as Allie and Noah in the film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks' tragic story The Notebook. It came as a shock to many of their friends when they revealed that they were dating in real life, since it seemed like all they did was argue and fight when they were on-set making the film.
The couple dated for a number of years before they announced their split in 2007 and it was thought to have been mutual, even though neither star has talked publicly about their reasons for deciding to go their separate ways. Earlier this year it was reported that Rachel was mad that Ryan was able to move on from their break-up so quickly and that he was now dating Eva Mendes and they have two children. Rachel seems to be playing the jealous ex-card here, which could be why Ryan has been appearing in films with Emma Stone rather than Rachel over the past few years.
12 Worked Together: Blake Lively And Penn Badgley
Blake Lively and Penn Badgley were once well-known teen stars after starring in the popular teen show Gossip Girl. In the first few seasons of the show, Serena and Dan were shown as one of the biggest couples in the show, which then led to the couple dating in real life.
The couple only dated for three years before they announced their break-up in 2010, but it seems that Serena and Dan were the kind of couple that were meant to be together. Blake and Penn continued to reprise their roles on the show following the break-up, which leads up to the season finale where their two characters finally tied the knot. It must have been awkward for the couple to be in this kind of scenario after their own relationship had failed, but they remained professional and gave their characters the ending that their fans deserved.
11 Worked Together: Nina Dobrev And Ian Somerhalder
Nina Dobrev And Ian Somerhalder stole the hearts of many Vampire Diaries fans because of their incredible chemistry throughout the series, before it was announced that the couple were in fact dating in real life.
Even though Damon and Elena were able to finally have their happy ever after in the show, it seems that things didn't work out that way for Nina and Ian, who announced their split back in 2013, when the show was still being filmed. Nina left the show for a while following their split but was able to return to the final season to show that she finally got her happily ever after, even though there were a number of rumours about Ian's wife Nikki Reed and the fact that she was jealous of the chemistry that Ian and Nina had when they were on-screen. That seems to have been put to the side now, as Nikki joined the couple for the farewell dinner that marked the end of The Vampire Diaries and all three seemed to be on good terms.
10 Refused: Lena Headey And Jerome Flynn
Game of Thrones actors Jerome Flynn and Lena Headey began dating in the early 2000s. Unsurprisingly, it is reported that the relationship ended on a sour note somewhere around March 2014 and the couple have since had it written into their contracts that they no longer have to appear on-screen together. The Game of Thrones writing team has ensured that Cersei and Bronn never met on the show since the duo can now no longer be in the same room.
There was a scene in the final episode of Game Of Thrones last season, where Flynn's character was forced to leave and state that he was going for a drink before Queen Cersei came onto the set, because they are not allowed to be on set at the same time. The reasons for the breakdown in their relationship are unknown, but it must have been quite a bad breakup for both stars to go to such lengths to ensure they never have to work together.
9 Worked Together: Jennifer Garner And Michael Vartan
Jennifer Garner and Michael Vartan worked together on Alias for a number of years while Jennifer was still married to actor and screenwriter Scott Foley. Following her divorce from Foley in 2003, the couple made it public knowledge that they had begun dating, even though it seems that their secret romance was quite a short-lived affair.
The couple announced that they decided to split in August 2004, with Michael stating that they just worked better as friends. The couple still had to work together on Alias for the next few years, and it appears as though they were easily able to do this up until the series officially came to an end in 2006. Jennifer then went on to have a high profile marriage to Ben Affleck, before that ended in divorce in 2015.
8 Refused: Johnny Depp And Winona Ryder
Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder appeared together in Edward Scissorhands back in 1990 and began dating while the movie was still in production. The couple dated from 1989 until 1993 and it seemed at one point as though the couple might marry until they went their separate ways.
The duo remained friends for a number of years following their split as Depp moved on to date Kate Moss and then Vanessa Paradis, and then Amber Heard. However, Ryder stated that she refuses to share a screen with her former boyfriend ever again. It seems that the way Depp went about his relationship with Amber behind Vanessa's back left a sour taste in Winona's mouth, so much so that she has refused to ever work with him again. Winona stated that she thinks it's a big cliché for Depp to break up with the mother of his children so that he can go on to date a woman in her 20s.
7 Worked Together: Kaley Cuoco And Johnny Galecki
The Big Bang Theory managed to create a real-life couple as Kaley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki, who play Penny and Leonard on the show, revealed that they had begun dating outside of the TV show after years of trying to be a couple on-screen.
The couple revealed to the world back in 2010 that they had secretly been dating for more than two years and had been forced to lie to their friends and avoid paparazzi so that their relationship didn't become another scrutinized celebrity romance. The duo's real life romance didn't continue down the same route as their on-screen characters, though, as the couple revealed that they had gone their separate ways in 2013. Penny and Leonard are still in love on the hit TV show, which means that Kaley and Johnny have been forced to remain friends and continue to act like lovers on-screen.
6 Worked Together: Kristen Stewart And Robert Pattinson
Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were thrust into the spotlight back in 2008 when Twilight was first released. Despite a lot of negative responses from fans of the movies stating that the couple seemingly didn't have any chemistry, it was later confirmed that the duo were dating in real life.
The couple continued to date until the final film was wrapped up in 2012 but that was when it was revealed that Kristen Stewart was part of a cheating scandal that also included the director of Snow White And The Huntsman, Rupert Sanders. Luckily, the films had already been completed so the couple didn't have to reprise their roles as Bella Swann and Edward Cullen but Robert and Kristen still had to work together to promote the final film and do media appearances before they were finally able to go their separate ways.
5 Worked Together: Katie Holmes And Joshua Jackson
Pacey and Joey had obvious chemistry on-screen and this later led to a love story between the two, with Joey finally choosing Pacey over Dawson in the end. Despite their obvious chemistry on-screen, it seems that their real-life romance fizzled out after only a few years, which left the couple to continue working together as a couple on-screen until 2003 when the popular show came to an end. It wasn't common knowledge that the two were dating back when the show was being aired.
4 Refused: Zac Efron And Vanessa Hudgens
Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens became a couple after they portrayed Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez in High School Musical. The romance between the duo didn't last very long after the final instalment of the franchise was released, and it seems that like the rest of the cast, the duo went their separate ways.
Vanessa admitted earlier this year that it has been years since she last spoke to Zac Efron and that they were definitely not friends. High School Musical celebrated its 10 year anniversary last year and the cast got back together for a special showing of the film, but Zac was a notable absence from the reunion, which could be a hint to the fact that Efron didn't want to return and appear on-screen with his ex-girlfriend. Both stars have continued to climb the ranks in their careers since High School Musical, but it is highly unlikely that this couple will be seen sharing a screen anytime soon.
3 Worked Together: Rachel Bilson And Adam Brody
Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody portrayed Seth Cohen and Summer Roberts on teen drama The OC for four years. Even though the series showed Seth pining for Summer throughout the first season, it seems that there was no such problem in real life, since it is reported that the couple were together for three of the four years that they were filming the show together.
As with many teen romances, it seems that their relationship came to an abrupt end whilst the show was still being made and the couple was then forced to continue working together, even though they remained friends. Seth and Summer ended The OC as husband and wife, as their marriage played a huge role in the fourth season of the show, but outside of the show, the couple had gone their separate ways the year before, but were still able to remain professional and give The OC fans the ending that they all dreamed of.
2 Refused: Zayn Malik And Perri Edwards
Zayn Malik rose to fame as a member of One Direction in 2009 before the group went on to be one of the biggest boybands in the world. Perri Edwards won X-Factor with Little Mix before the two groups worked together, and Perri and Zayn announced that they were dating in May 2012.
The couple became engaged in August 2013 but then announced that they had decided to split in August 2015. It is reported that Zayn actually broke up with Perri via text message and she has since written a number of songs to get back at the former boyband member. Given the shade that both stars have thrown at each other over the past few years, it isn't likely that they will ever be seen in the same room together again, let alone ever work together.
1 Worked Together: Sophia Bush And Chad Michael Murray
Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray were one of the cutest couples in TV history when they portrayed Lucas Scott and Brooke Davis in One Tree Hill. The couple began dating in real life, which later led to a marriage that only lasted five months in 2006.
Perhaps one of the hardest things for the couple was the fact that One Tree Hill was still a huge part of their lives and they were both still main characters in the show, so they had no choice but to continue working together. Lucas changed his love interest and ended up marrying Peyton in the series, which could have been because it was hard for the couple to continue portraying a couple following their failed marriage. It could also have been the plan for the show all along. What is known is that the couple managed to continue working together despite obvious problems in their personal life.
