Robots are the future. What humans used to do for work, robots will be doing faster, safer, and more efficiently. They will no doubt take away most of the jobs that are currently done by humans. But some occupations would really benefit from a human-free overhaul - and humans would benefit as well. Besides providing aesthetic gratification and new technologies, robot animals have a very specific practical use that may soon be put into action: emergency rescue vehicles. These robots, whose animal-based designs make them faster, stronger, and more versatile than human responders, will be sent to disaster zones to rescue survivors and clean up hazardous areas. That’s the plan anyway. But the most important benefit of robot emergency response vehicles is that humans will no longer have to risk their lives to save others - the robot animals will take the hit instead.
