YouTube has only been around since 2005, but it has already become one of the most popular video-sharing websites in the world.
Over 300 hours of content are uploaded to YouTube every minute, making it impossible to see everything. Some videos fade into obscurity, never to be seen again, while others gain popularity quickly. If you’re very lucky, your video can go viral and suddenly you’ll have a bunch of new subscribers to your channel. You can even become YouTube famous if you’re able to recruit enough loyal subscribers!
We live in a new media age where popularity is now defined by the audience rather than by the critics. The more that a video gets shared on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, the more popular it becomes. Charlie The Unicorn, Star Wars Kid, Pen Pineapple Apple Pen and Katy Perry’s Left Shark are all examples of videos that gained popularity through the basic power of shares.
How does a video go viral though? According to YouTube’s trends manager, Kevin Allocca, there are three simple things that can make this happen: tastemakers, communities of participation and unexpectedness. Yet, we have a feeling that luck plays a huge role in how a video performs too.
