While we know without a shadow of the doubt that the world is round, sometimes it’s fun to imagine what if it wasn’t. So many things about the world as we know it would change, and yet some would stay very similar. If you were to stand in the middle of the Earth, you might not notice much of a difference. Gravity would likely affect you in much the way it does now, and the horizon would still look flat. However, if you happened to be watching a ship pull into the harbor, you’ll notice the difference almost immediately, since it doesn’t have to curve over the horizon! Should you try to walk towards the edges of the Earth, you’ll see that the force of gravity will make it almost impossible. You’ll feel as if you’re trying to climb a steep mountain. And speaking of mountains, if you make it far enough you could encounter the massive ice wall that surrounds the Earth. To keep our oceans from flowing right over the edge, of course. And if our planet’s gravity caused us to be flat, it’s likely that we wouldn’t be the only disc-shaped planet in the solar system. Even our moon would look different, as the Earth would no longer be projecting a curved shadow onto the moon’s surface. You’d actually be able to see different sides of the moon depending on where you are standing on the planet. All these changes are nothing compared to the societal implications that the Earth being flat would cause.
