Childhood should be about having fun with your friends, playing games, and dressing and acting like a kid. But many child stars are pushed into the limelight at a very early age, and many people believe the industry exploits them. There are new labor laws in place to protect children, but if their parents sign off on these exploitative projects, there really isn’t much that can be done. Public outcry ensues, but that doesn’t stop the industry from dressing up these child stars to appear much older than they are, and taking advantage of them by placing them in inappropriate films and ad campaigns.
The beautiful kids controversy is based on a child who’s beautiful features cause them to garner attention in the industry. But the attention is solely based on their looks and not much else. Many children also go through strict beauty rituals to appear much older than they are, especially in the pageant world. Maddy Jackson from “Toddlers & Tiaras” was in the news when her mom dressed her up like Dolly Parton, complete with fake boobs and a padded butt. The over-sexualized costume really put the pageant in a negative light, and many wondered how far a parent would go to exploit their child.
Maddy’s co-star, Paisley Scott Dickey, also caused outrage when she was dressed in a costume to mimic Julia Robert’s role as a prostitute in “Pretty Woman.” Paisley, who was just three-years-old at the time, wore thigh-high boots, a mini skirt and a blonde wig. The public was outraged, and many people blamed television execs, as well as Paisley’s mom, for exploiting her. This incident definitely shed light on the negative aspects of the pageant industry.
Kaia Gerber, the daughter of Cindy Crawford, stirred up controversy when she appeared in an ad campaign for Young Versace. In the image, she’s dressed like an adult in a leather jacket and a miniskirt. The photo caused so much outrage, and many believed Kaia was too young to be modeling in such a provocative manner.
The modeling industry is notorious for exploiting young talent. Russian model Kristina Pimenova was labeled “the most beautiful girl in the world” when she was just 10-years-old. Kristina is quite stunning, and she definitely has model potential, but many believe she has been exploited since she started modeling at the age of three. With so much emphasis placed on Kristina’s looks, it really sends out a bad message to young girls that your outer appearance is the most important thing in life.
The most famous case of a child star being taken advantage of is the story of Brooke Shields. At the age of 10, actress Brooke Shields had appeared in inappropriate photographs that later ran in a “Playboy” publication. When she turned 12, she starred in “Pretty Baby” - a movie about a child prostitute. Brooke appeared nude in the film, and it caused some major backlash. Many believed Brooke was pushed into the limelight and ordered to do things that no child should be subjected to. It wasn’t too long after that child labor laws were created to protect young actors.
