Climate change and the effects global warming is having on our planet is no joke, the time is now to start making immense changes before it’s too late. A recent report from the United Nations is warning the world that it has just 12 years to put a halt to global warming before the planet is sent into a time of extreme heat, drought, floods, and even poverty.
As alarming as this may sound, it is a serious matter. Scientists concluded that preventing an extra single degree of heat could be the difference between life and death in the next few decades for people; however, they don’t think that humanity will be able to rise up to the challenge.
One move the Earth has to do in order to prevent the worst from happening is to reduce the amount of CO2 emissions. The planet must reduce the amount of CO2 produced each year by nearly half by 2030, and reduce CO2 production to zero by 2050. In order to achieve this, we must make “unprecedented” changes that range from the closing of coal-fired power stations and switching to renewable energy instantly.
The report released by the UN warns us that we must limit global warming to 1.5C, which will inevitably cost the world $2.4 trillion every year for the next two decades; that is a whopping $48 trillion! The report further touches on things that need to change immediately, such as the burning of coal, eating less meat, considering meat makes a huge amount of CO2 each year, extensive planting of forests, and storing carbon underground.
Those are a few things that the Earth must change to eliminate the possibility of our climate getting any worse. The report also reveals how we are heading towards a degree increase of 3 degrees C, and we must slash that to less than 1.5 degrees C as laid out in the Paris agreement. According to DailyMail, the planet requires “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society.”
This is not meant to scare anyone. Instead, allow this to open our eyes to the truth behind where we are headed, and what we as a planet must do in order to prevent that. We can all play a part by reducing our own carbon footprint, let’s prove them wrong, and show that we can change for the sake of our planet’s well being.
