Without a doubt one of the most famous film directors to ever live, Steven Spielberg has become something akin to a brand. The man behind such films as the Indiana Jones series, Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, and Schindler's List among far too many others to list here, the guy seems to have the Midas touch. In fact, his name has become so synonymous with quality that his involvement in a movie is likely to make the masses pay more attention to it. Also an accomplished producer who co-founded Amblin Entertainment, his incredible career has allowed him to amass an impressive fortune. As a result of this, he has been able to buy some pretty awesome things that the vast majority of people could never even fathom. Realizing that is what inspired us to put together this list of twenty crazy things Steven Spielberg has bought that we can’t even dream of.

In order for something to be for consideration for possible inclusion on this list, it first and foremost must have been owned by Steven Spielberg at some point. For the purposes of this list, it makes no difference whatsoever what category the item in question falls into. However, it absolutely must be something that is impressive enough that regular folks would only be able to dream about having the same thing in their life. As such, you won’t be finding an everyday kitchen item or piece of furniture included here. With all of that in mind, let’s get to the list.

2.5 Percent Of Star Wars (A New Hope)

Alright, alright, we admit it, this entry doesn’t fit the rules we gave this list, but is it so cool that we’re opting to bend our own rules right away? A story that relates back to a “bet” Steven made with his good friend George Lucas during the filming of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the two had differing views on their upcoming film’s prospects. Evidently, Lucas came to the set of his friend’s film while overcome by production woes the first Star Wars films was having. Watching as Spielberg’s production ran far smoother and seemed extremely impressive, George felt that Steven had a hit on his hands and his movie could be a loser. Offering up a bet of sorts when Spielberg claimed Star Wars would be a hit, they swapped two-and-a-half percent ownership in their projects with one another. Turned out it was a bad financial move for Lucas since Star Wars far outperformed Close Encounters, and Steven received millions that he wouldn’t have otherwise, as a result. Plus, he gets to say he partly owns the first Star Wars film.

Life Rights

Something that a lot of people don’t often think about, every time you watch a film or television show about a famous celebrity, there was a transaction that took place to start the project. After all, in order to make a movie about a well-known entity, someone involved with the production has to have purchased the “life rights” to their story. What that means is that they then have the legal ability to adapt the story of the person as written at the time into a film or show. One of the most important film directors and producers of her generation, Steven Spielberg has been involved in several biopics in the past. On top of that, he also currently has the “life rights” to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Julian Assange among others. In an interesting side note, David Oyelowo revealed that Steven wants him to play Dr. King again for the big screen in his planned project.

Tesla Model S

Probably the most attainable item featured on this list, this time around, we are looking at the only car that you’ll find included here but far from the only means of travel. That said, at the time that Steven Spielberg purchased this electric car, they were extremely popular among the rich and famous which made it difficult to track them down. Don’t get us wrong, they were available to the masses at the time. But if you tried to actually buy one, then you may be able to attest that they disappeared from car lots quickly. Of course, when you have the connections of someone like Steven Spielberg that is not likely to be a concern that holds you back from something you want, as evidenced here. Seen in the driver’s seat of a Tesla Model S as he went to lunch when this shot was taken, he was traveling in style, if you ask us.

Jet-Setting Lifestyle

If you are a fan of the movie-making machine that is Hollywood and have followed the career of Steven Spielberg in specific, it should be clear that he is a very hard worker. Consistently working on some form of pre-production, post-production, or active shooting of a film, he also never seems to rest when it comes to eyeing what his next project is going to be. As such, we don’t think there is any question that he would greatly value any opportunity he has to get away. And based on the photos we’ve seen, he spares no expense. Able to vacation in any part of the world that arouses his fancy at a given moment, he has been seen in countries like Canada, Italy, and Ireland to name only a few. In fact, he thought so highly of his Ireland holiday that he said it changed his life.

Pacific Ocean View

Our first entry looking at an aspect of the many homes that Steven Spielberg has bought, this time around, we are looking at one of the selling points of his Los Angeles property. Situated in a part of the Pacific Palisades neighborhood that only the truly rich can afford to live on, there are a few reasons why it costs so much to own a property in this area. For instance, people really enjoy being able to claim owning a house there as they can brag about living near some incredibly rich and famous people. However, there is also a more natural aspect of the area that makes it high in demand—its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Of course, Steven got one of the most coveted properties which means that from his house, he gets to overlook the gorgeous water whenever he wants.

Philanthropic Pursuits

Not exactly something that Steven has expressly bought, the reason why his philanthropic pursuits make sense to be included on a list like this one is that he does a lot more than just hand over money. Instead, he has a history of not only lending his name and time to organizations for the common good but has also founded charities. In fact, he created one named Starbright that uses technology and entertainment to aid the lives of sick kids. He also took the profits he earned from Schindler’s List and Munich and created the Righteous Persons Foundation and Survivors of Shoah Visual History Foundation. Efforts to combat prejudice, intolerance, and bigotry, these organizations also chronicled more than fifty thousand accounts given by holocaust survivors. That is all to say nothing of the charities he only supports without helping to run them.

New York Apartment

An apartment building that is a big-enough deal that it actually has its own Wikipedia page, we doubt many readers of this article have lived somewhere that well-known. Located “between West 74th Street and West 75th Street, three blocks north of The Dakota,” The San Remo is the name of the co-op building that Steven’s apartment is a part of. Living alongside other major celebrities like Barry Manilow, Tiger Woods, Demi Moore, Glenn Close, Steve Martin, and Diane Keaton among others, it is a great place to rub elbows with some of the biggest stars in Hollywood. Someone who, for the most part, likes to keep his private life just like that, there aren’t any readily available shots of the inside of Steven’s apartment but units sell in multi-million-dollar deals so we can only imagine.

Malibu Beach House

No longer a property that Steven Spielberg owns today, he opted to unload his mammoth Malibu beach house in 2015 after flirting with the market in the past. Situated on the water in the midst of a highly in-demand area, yet again, he found himself owning property near some hugely popular and well-known stars. Built on just over an acre of land, it was enough space to incorporate a home that contained more than seven thousand square feet within its walls. Said to feature seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms, it also included a study, massage room, and a theater space to screen movies. On top of that, it also had a two-bedroom guest house on the property which would be awesome to stay in by itself.

Legendary Oscars

An entry that may be the ultimate proof that Steven Spielberg still loves the movie industry and has a passion for keeping its legacy intact, his long career doesn’t seem to have tainted his view. Someone who clearly respects those that built the movie-making machine he is so important to these days, he made a choice to help preserve its history out of the kindness of his heart. That is why he bought an Oscar that Clark Gable won for his work in It Happened One Night and two that Bette Davis took home due to being great in the movies Dangerous and Jezebel. You may be thinking he did this to keep a part of history but he then turned around and gave them to Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which is the entity that runs the Oscars, if you didn’t know.

Citizen Kane’s Rosebud

Another example of Steven buying a piece of film history, this time around, we’re looking at the fact that he purchased arguably the most important film prop ever created. If you aren’t a fan of older movies and don’t follow lists of the best films ever made, then you may have absolutely no idea what the significance of a sled emblazoned with the word Rosebud is. Created in order to serve as a talking point in the highly-acclaimed film Citizen Kane, this is a spoiler but the movie starts out with the movie’s main character saying Rosebud. The jumping-off point of the movie’s plot, a character tries to figure out its importance over the remainder of the film. Sadly, only one of the several sleds created for the film still exists as the others were burned, and Steven bought it at auction in 1986.

Gorgeous Guest House

Like most people that have been able to amass a huge fortune, over the years, Steven Spielberg has bought several homes and properties for himself and his loved ones. Unlike most, however, all of his past holdings are so incredible that even one of his guest houses is gorgeous enough to be completely worthy of a list like this one. Built on the estate of his home in New York, when he bought the property, he wasn’t pleased with the lodging for his guests so he brought in famed architect Charles Gwathmey to fix that. As a result, they created a living space with long halls, natural lighting, fascinating design, a large kitchen space, a dining room, and bedrooms for adults and kids alike. We have to say that this is a man who wants his friends and family to have a wonderful time.

Hamptons Home

Speaking of his impressive guest house, this time around, we are looking at the principal building that stands alongside it on the East Hampton, New York that Steven bought. A gorgeous home that also doesn’t look overly ostentatious despite its massive size, if you shrunk it down quite a bit, it looks like something you could find on a typical farm property. Speaking of the parcel of land it sits on, that is also an interesting story as Steven gifted seven acres of it to a local land trust to ensure that it will be left alone instead of being developed. Also highlighted by a pool area complete with a hot tub, everything about this space seems to have been designed in order to maximize comfort above all else.

Private Jet

An entry that we’re guessing many people reading this article anticipated, it often seems like you’ll be kicked out of the rich and powerful club if you don’t have a private jet. Of course, Steven Spielberg couldn’t have that, and we’ve already touched on his propensity for traveling the world so it is time to look at the plane he uses to get around more often than not. A Bombardier Global Express XRS, the base model it is based on is said to be known as a pioneer of jets with large cabins and was first released to the public back in 1993. Built to allow eight to fourteen people to travel comfortably, it also features a bathroom and galley with designer fixtures and has an all-leather interior.

Naples Home

Probably not the Naples that you were thinking of when you first came across this entry, we’re not talking about the city in Italy here. Instead, it is time to look at a house that Spielberg bought in the Florida city that is a part of Collier County and has a meager population of just over twenty thousand people. With all of that in mind, you may be wondering what is so impressive about owning a large property and home in that area. Well, in this case, the small community size is due to the fact that the housing is so extravagant, and prices are outrageous enough to be considered among the most expensive in America. As such, we can imagine the price tag Steven paid to own a house in the area, especially a waterfront one.

Private Yacht

When we were kids and went to the beach, we can remember being amazed by the people off in the distance that were traveling in boats we thought were extremely costly at the time. If Steven Spielberg drove by in his massive yacht, we would have been amazed. And if by then, we found that it was privately owned, our minds would have simply been blown. Known as The Seven Seas, some people referred to the ship Steven Spielberg owned as the world’s most expensive charter, and we can totally see why he charges more than a million dollars a week to rent it. Containing rooms lined with organic wood, it also features a fifteen-foot infinity pool, two HDTVs that are bigger than fifteen feet, and a helipad among other amenities.

A Film Studio

The ultimate outcome of the business acumen that Steven Spielberg has exhibited throughout his career and the eye he had for picking films, he ended co-founding DreamWorks, a film studio of his own. Started up alongside former Walt Disney Studios chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg and Geffen Records founder David Geffen, each of them came together to buy everything the business needed to start up. Eventually resulting in box office behemoths like How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek, Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan, and far too many others to list here, the company made a huge impact. Broken up and sold off in part to Paramount, their original vision changed and they became a production company, but there aren’t many filmmakers with the ability to start something like this.

Added On Vineyard

Someone who is clearly well-versed with the finer things in life, it seems that Steven and his wife, Kate Capshaw, have developed a taste for wine based off a major 2013 project they undertook. Opting to add a vineyard to the property of their main home in Los Angeles, it gets even better from there for the people that actually work there. We say that because of how lovely it seems to be employed working on the Spielberg family vineyard and be able to look up and see the Pacific Ocean baring down on you. Even more impressive as far as we can tell, they haven’t begun selling wine so it seems like all of this happened for the enjoyment of this couple, their friends, and family.

Pacific Palisades Home

Going from the vineyard Steven and Kate had built, to the home that is the main feature of the property both are found on, this house is an incredible living space. Bought by the director during the eighties and worked on extensively, Steven compared altering it into his ideal to that of working on a film. In fact, he said that the only difference in planning the work on his house “is that I paid for it.” Previously owned by the likes of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., David O. Selznick, Cary Grant and Barbara Hutton, and Bobby Vinton, Steven said he was attracted to the history of the home. Not content with that, however, he would double the square footage of the house and, through extensive remodeling, give it a much more intimate feel. Containing five bedrooms, six bathrooms, and a long list of other amenities like a theater and spacious kitchen, this really is a dream house.

Bigger Private Yacht

Recently on this list, we looked at Steven Spielberg’s incredible yacht, The Seven Seas. An amazing feat of human ingenuity, we should be impressed with ourselves as a species that some of us are capable of designing floating homes of incredible size. That said, even though we think his yacht is proof of what humanity has accomplished, this is Steven Spielberg, and in his professional life, he always pushes things further and further. Turns out that personality trait remains the same in his private life as he sold The Seven Seas for twenty-six million dollars in 2015 in order to build an even larger one. Said to be three hundred feet in size, his new ship is being custom built by the same company that crafted his previous one and certainly will be a gigantic expenditure for him.

Private Island

Alright, if there is one thing above all others that points to someone having a stupid amount of money, it has to be buying an island in order to make it a private getaway. Something that Steven Spielberg took part in, he purchased a piece of land in Portugal’s Madeira Archipelago according to all public accounts. This being Steven Spielberg, a man who likes to do things in private when not at work, that is all the publicly available information about his purchase. In fact, what he has done with his island is so secret that no confirmed pictures of it exist, so you are looking at an image that represents the idea of what he bought. Still, even if he never travels to the island, something we think is nearly unfathomable, the fact that he bought one is mind-boggling.
