There are currently quite a few people who genuinely believe that the Earth is flat. Here are some of the things that would happen if that were really the case.
Historically, science has not always been 100% correct. There were breakthroughs made centuries ago that were later proved to be very wrong; humankind once believed that the Earth was the center of the universe and that the sun revolved around us. Hogwash, obviously, but we did not know that until someone disproved it.
There was also a time when the majority of humans believed the Earth was flat. That was also disproved hundreds of years ago. However, there is still a great number of people who continue to believe that our planet is shaped like a pancake. Claiming that those telling us the Earth is a globe are lying, and all the evidence pointing to that being true is fabricated.
If you believe that the Earth is flat, we are about to hit you with some truth, courtesy of What If, that may change your mind. The physics that would need to exist for our planet to be flat would simply make it inhabitable. Just like the video below, let's start with gravity. It could still exist in a disc-shaped world, but it would be constantly pulling everyone towards the middle of the planet – so the North Pole according to the Flat Earth Society.
That would mean the further away you were from the center, the more it would feel as if you were walking uphill, even though you technically might not be. How about the sun? Flat Earthers believe that the sun revolves around the Earth, just like our ancestors from centuries ago believed. If that were true, not only would there not be any seasons, but also no day and night as we know it. The sun would constantly be illuminating the entire planet.
But wait, there's more. Due to Earth's magnetic field being dependent on the spheric shape of the planet, we wouldn't have gravity without it. That would result in all of our water and oxygen simply escaping into space. When it comes to why a flat Earth would quite literally be inhabitable, we have only just started to scratch the surface with this article.
