If your baby is born and you name him after KFC's Colonel Sanders then you could win $11,000 towards the newborn's college tuition.
We currently live in a time where babies are being given some pretty weird and wonderful names. Celebrity children, in particular, are blessed, or burdened depending on your stance, with names you probably haven't ever heard before. Previous generations likely thought the same thing when we were getting some of our names only for them to be commonplace a generation later.
This news may be a step beyond for the current generation, however, let alone our parents and grandparents. KFC is running a competition in which the fast food chain will give $11,000 to a set of parents who name their child after its company's fearless founder, Colonel Sanders. Well, more specifically if the newborn takes the Colonel's first name Harland, so it isn't quite as bad as it sounds.
There are a few catches, and it isn't merely as simple as KFC handing out cheques to the parents of every baby Harland from here on in. First of all, only one baby will win the prize. The first baby officially named Harland who is born on September 9, 2018, will win the $11,000. That money will go towards the little one's future college tuition.
It’s a great name for your baby. Just say it out loud. Harland. Plus, your greatly named kid could get $11,000 for college.— KFC (@kfc) August 29, 2018
The site where you can submit your entry will go live at midnight on September 9 and will be open for 30 days. KFC will announce the winner on November 1, 2018. The date September 9 has not simply been picked at random either. If Sanders were still alive then it would have marked his 128th birthday. Harlands are becoming scarce in the US nowadays though, it is the 3257th most popular name according to USA Today, hence KFC's attempts to boost those numbers.
The amount up for grabs has significance too. $11,000, 11 herbs and spices, get it? If you want to get your hands on that money and put a nice amount of money away for your baby's future then you know what you need to do. If you're not expecting a baby within the next week, however, then we're afraid there's not much you can do. Also, we wonder how many baby's names will be changed from Harland after they don't end up being the first and hence don't win the prize.
