Morse Code was an old piece of technology designed to communicate with others before telephones, email, and texting were even thought of. However, it doesn't seem to have been mentioned much these days due to the aforementioned developments that have been made since its inception. But for people with disabilities, Morse Code is essential because it's easier to use when other methods aren't an option.
Giant tech company Google saw this and decided to tackle the matter through the Gboard, their keyboard app. Gboard features Morse Code accessibility to give people with disabilities an easier way to communicate when other options simply don't work with their needs. For a while there, this app was exclusive to Android phones via Google Play. Now, according to Fortune, it's available for iPhone users who need Morse Code to speak with others. This will make the app available to more people, thus making many more lives easier as a result.
This feature to the Gboard includes two large dots and dashes that were made specifically for Morse Code. Like with the regular keyboard, word suggestions are made available while you type. To help consumers with the learning curve that comes with Morse Code, Google has their Morse Typing Trainer game available for the public on both mobile and desktop.
When crafting the Morse Code accessibility feature for the iPhone, Google ensured that they would not only do it but that they would do it right. They connected with those that have cerebral palsy to make a helpful app to help improve the lives of others. This helped give Google the best insight into what would work best for the Morse Code feature. Everything- from the keyboard's layout, to specific settings targeted to bolster its usability, to including some external switches so that those with limited mobility can better use the app- was all designed with such help to ensure that those who will use this feature most will find it both useful and beneficial to their lives.
Those interested in buying the Gboard for iPhone can purchase the app for free in the App Store.
