Garageband's New Update Let's You Learn Guitar For Free

Apple will be releasing a new update to its music app GarageBand that includes a number of new sounds, loops, and instruments. The update will also feature free Artist Lessons.

GarageBand, a fully equipped music creation studio, features a sound library with instruments, presets for guitar and voice, and a vast selection of session drummers and percussionists. The GarageBand 10.3 update will introduce two new drummers that play roots and jazz-influenced brush styles, 1,000 new electronic and urban loops for future bass and chill rap, and 400 voice, machine, and animal sound effects. The app will also present three new traditional Chinese and Japanese instruments: the Guzheng, Koto, and Taiko drums, and five Vintage Mellotron patches.

The free Artist Lessons, which were $4.99 in the past, are a way to learn popular songs on piano and guitar with the help of the original songwriters, such as Death Cab for Cutie, Rush, Sarah McLachlan, Sting, John Legend, Colbie Caillat, OneRepublic, Norah Jones, or Fall Out Boy. Also, Artist Lessons, which were available in only 20 countries before, are now available in more than 150 countries.

Once recorded, music can be shared through GarageBand with friends, family, or online via social networks. Tracks can also be saved as a custom ringtone. In addition, tracks can be exported to the iTunes library and can be shared directly from GarageBand through Apple Music Connect.

GarageBand has been used by countless musicians with limited resources to record albums. Frances McKee of the Vaselines, says, "I know a lot of 'real musicians' prefer more advanced programs like Pro Tools or Logic, but I'm a part-time punk." McKee and her Vaselines partner Eugene Kelly, who began creating music together nearly thirty years ago, used GarageBand to work on their 2010 comeback album, Sex With an X. The experience convinced McKee that GarageBand was a legitimate songwriting tool. "Up until then I hated using computers," she says. "But [GarageBand] changed everything."

The new release update will also increase compatibility between GarageBand on macOS and iOS, and will feature new stability improvements and bug fixes.
