Matt Reeves' highly-anticipated blockbuster film, The Batman, will feature with a spinoff series on the Gotham Police Department.

According to a report from Variety, HBO Max is committing "to a drama set in the Gotham police department from Reeves" and Boardwalk Empire creator and executive producer Terence Winter.

The name for the series hasn't been determined yet. Variety's report also notes that the show "will be set in the world Reeves is creating for" The Batman, and that the intention is "to launch a new Batman universe across multiple platforms."

The show will reportedly focus on "the anatomy of corruption in Gotham City", with Warner Bros. Television serving as the studio.

The Batman was initially scheduled for a June 2021 release, but production was pushed back due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Right now, the film is scheduled to hit theaters in October 2021.

This upcoming spinoff series will take place following the conclusion of the Fox television series, Gotham, which focused on a younger Jim Gordon and the GCPD. The show ran from Sept. 22, 2014 to Apr. 25, 2019 - producing 100 total episodes over five seasons.

Gotham also focused on a young Bruce Wayne and his early journey to becoming the Batman. It also detailed the adventures of the primary villains from the Rogues' Gallery, and how they came to be.

The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader. His character will be challenged by Catwoman/Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz), Riddler/Edward Nashton (Paul Dano) Penguin/Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell). The cast also includes Andy Serkis (Alfred Pennyworth), Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon), John Turturro (Carmine Falcone) and Peter Sarsgaard (Gil Colson).

Reeves replaced Zack Snyder as the director of the Batman franchise, while Pattinson stepped in for Ben Affleck as the Caped Crusader. With a star-studded cast in the fold, expectations are understandably extremely high for The Batman. Clearly, HBO Max is optimistic on Reeves' ability to successfully reboot it.
