More than 20 years after the infamous break-up between Ross and Rachel on Friends, David Schwimmer still sides with his character.

Friends will forever go down as one of the most popular and influential shows in sitcom history. All ten seasons of the show are timeless and although it has been more than a decade and a half since it came to an end, people continue to watch and enjoy the show today. One of its most famous threads that ran from start to finish? The relationship between Ross and Rachel.

Although the pair end up together in the show's finale, or at least that's what fans are led to believe, it is hardly plain sailing for the pair. In fact, in season three, Ross sleeps with another woman after he and Rachel have a falling out. Ross doesn't believe he has done anything wrong as the two of them were on a break, but when Rachel finds out about the fling, she feels very differently.

Thus begun an argument that still rages on today, years after the show has come to an end. Were Ross and Rachel on a break or weren't they? According to David Schwimmer, who played Ross on the show, they most definitely were. Schwimmer made an appearance on The Tonight Show recently and rehashed his 23-year-old defense of Ross.

"It’s not even a question, they were on a break," Schwimmer exclaimed to Jimmy Fallon. Friends fans have been asked the same question over the years and the numbers don't lie. Those who have seen the show sit firmly on the side of Ross and they too believe that the couple was on a break. 83% of TV Guide readers thought Ross was justified in his actions.

As for what Jennifer Aniston thinks about all this, who played Rachel on the show, Schwimmer will be able to hash that out with her some time soon. The original six cast members were supposed to have taken part in a reunion show, but that has been delayed due to the pandemic. Schwimmer revealed during the same Tonight Show appearance that shooting for the show could begin as early as mid-August.
