Comedian Sinbad is recovering from a stroke, according to his family, who told Variety as much on Monday Morning.
The 64-year-old Michigan native, real name David Adkins, emerged as a stand-up comedian with a number of HBO specials in the 90s. He was the titular star of The Sinbad Show on Fox from 1993-94 and played Coach Walter Oakes in a The Cosby Show spinoff called A Different World that aired on NBC from 1987-1993.
The veteran had a leading role on Fox's Rel in more recent times, playing Milton in a show based on Lil Rel Howery's life created by Howery and Kevin Barnett that ran from 2018-19. Milton was Howery's widowed father.
“It is out of sincere love that we share Sinbad, our beloved husband and father, is recovering from a recent stroke,” his family told the aforementioned publication in a statement. “Sinbad is a light source of love and joy for many generations.
"While he is beginning his road to recovery, we are faithful and optimistic that he will bring laughter into our hearts soon. Our family thanks you in advance for your love and support and ask for continued prayers for his healing. We also ask that you please respect our privacy during this time.’ Thank you.”
Sinbad also featured in shows such as Comedy Bang! Bang! and The Eric Andre Show. He voiced characters from Disney's The Lion Guard, Steven Universe, and American Dad.
