It looks like Kate Spade's family is pretty upset about some reports that surfaced following the designer's death.
It all started when Kate Spade’s older sister, Reta Brosnahan Saffo, sent an email to CBS This Morning saying the 55-year-old designer suffered from bipolar disorder, which made Kate's suicide foreseeable and "not unexpected,” by Reta. The email also read that Reta “tried numerous times to get her help” but in the end, “it finally took its toll on her.” Kate’s older sister also wrote: "Sometimes you simply cannot SAVE people from themselves!"
Spade's family was furious with this email. A source close to the deceased designer’s family told ET that Kate’s older sister “has been estranged from the entire family for more than 10 years," and they don't understand why she would choose “this time of great sorrow” to “surface with unsubstantiated comments.” The source also added: “Her statements paint a picture of someone who didn’t know her at all." Kate Spade was reported to be “a kind, generous, funny, warm and extremely private person.”
It was true that "Kate suffered from depression and anxiety for many years. She was actively seeking help and working closely with her doctors to treat her disease,” her husband Andy Spade confirmed with The New York Times in a statement. But depression doesn’t mean that she has bipolar disorder. Andy also wrote in the statement that “anything else that is out there right now is false.”
The day before Kate’s apparent suicide, Andy said that they still talked as usual. Therefore, it was “a complete shock” when she took her own life as “there was no indication and no warning that she would do this.” Her husband believed that “it clearly wasn’t her. There were personal demons she was battling,"
Andy was also furious that Kate’s message to their daughter was so “heartlessly” disclosed to the public. He hadn’t seen it, but he was appalled that the media got access to it. Now that his wife and his best friend for 35 years has passed away, Andy’s main concern right now is to protect their daughter’s privacy “as she deals with the unimaginable grief of losing her mother.”
Andy denied the rumor that he wanted to divorce his wife. “Kate was the most beautiful woman in the world,” he wrote as he went on saying that they’ve always loved doing business together and raising their beautiful daughter. For the last 10 months, he said that they had been living separately, but they were only a few blocks away. They still talked every day, had many meals together and also went on vacations as a family. “We loved each other very much and simply needed a break,” Andy added.
