There’s a song from the show South Pacific called “There is Nothing Like a Dame.” But as you will soon see that’s just not the case. We’re about to show you 15 male celebs who are exactly like dames. For the next list covers those who are more concerned about their own looks than they are seemingly of anyone else.
Odd, you may think, that such a band of supposedly macho types would be likened to dames, but read on and you will soon discover that under the hard exteriors and chiseled jaws beat the hearts of cosmetic-craving dudes.
Perhaps we’re being unfair. After all, these dudes live under an unforgiving and intense spotlight. We forget how easy it is for us to take a trip down to the store without being spotted by someone we know. How must it feel if your face is instantly recognizable by millions?
And of course, if your face doesn’t look quite right, you have the heat of the press on your back complaining that you are getting old or you look sick or pale. Okay, so no wonder these poor guys have to indulge their skin with some less-than-manly products — if only just for the sake of sanity!
So, here we are, 15 Male Celebs Who Spend More Time Getting Ready Than Their Wives
15. Kanye West Is Dabbing In Cosmetics
Mr. Kanye West is never happier than when he’s on display and looking his best. Notice his warm smile and welcoming demeanor! The American rapper who has produced a string of hits including “Diamonds from Sierra Leone” and “Stronger” first began in the music industry as a production assistant working on new artists’ beats. He became acclaimed at that and it wasn’t long until he started his own solo career.
In 2017, after a brief spell in solitude and away from the public eye, West announced his intention to release a range of cosmetics under the name Donda.
He has long been associated with clothing, but now feels the urge to get into cosmetics. Skincare and concealment are not new concepts for West, whose visits to a skincare clinic in Beverly Hills with wife Kim Kardashian don’t go unnoticed.
14. Nick Viall Is Taking Matters Into His Own Hands
Nick Viall is best known as a reality TV star, one of a rising number of normal people that have unknowingly been launched into showbiz orbit. Before appearing on Dancing with the Stars (in which he was eliminated in the first round), he appeared in the 21st season of the reality show The Bachelor. He has recently begun a new line of men’s grooming products called The Polished Gent. The line will include hair and facial products, and although Viall hasn’t revealed when we can expect them to launch, fans can sign up for exclusive updates on the brand’s site. On the Polished Gent website Viall wrote:
“Since my mid-20s I have put more time than I would like to admit into keeping a youthful appearance.
13. Sean John Takes His Skincare Routine Seriously
While not a cosmetic line, Unforgivable is a fragrance that has been released under Sean “Diddy” Combs’s management umbrella. It adds a little more vanity to his already-burgeoning fashion designer collection. The slogan for the fragrance released in 2005 was “Life Without Passion is Unforgivable” and it would seem life without a wholesome skincare routine is also a shocking indictment of the modern man. In 2017, Into the Gloss wrote a piece about Diddy’s daily routine:
“I wash my face, and I like putting hydrating night serums on — things meant for rejuvenation. I like the NARS Skin line. I use their Optimal Brightening Concentrate and have not skipped a night since I bought it,
12. Anthony Joshua Is Fresh And Clean
Sometimes you don’t need to be a TV star to sell cosmetics. Anthony Joshua’s feats in the boxing ring are well-documented. The British boxer is currently world heavyweight champion, having held the “IBF title since 2016 and the WBA (Super) and IBO titles since 2017,” according to Wikipedia. It’s probably quite natural for someone of Joshua’s standing to be associated with a deodorant that is renowned for its pulling appeal. Lynx ads have famously featured weedy men being chased by scores of women. As he told internet zine Toggle in 2017:
“I’m in and out of the gym all the time, so I know how important it is to have products that will leave me smelling and feeling good.”
11. Rob Lowe Has Years Of Experience
Famously always looking like he’s 22 years old, Rob Lowe has actually been around for 53 years.
He is the first to admit that his skincare routine is more involved than an ancient Egyptian embalming.
In 2015 he shared his secret with the rest of the world in the shape of his new PROFILE skincare range which includes, “a cleanser, a shave gel, an aftershave serum, a moisturizer, and an eye serum.” In 2016, he launched more products under the PROFILE banner called 18 Amber Wood. Lowe told zine Dermstore in 2015, “I have been asked countless times my secret to anti-aging and looking good through the years. It inspired me to share my knowledge and provide a solution for all men. PROFILE is the embodiment of years on movie sets with grooming professionals who have all imparted their wisdom, and I am thrilled to be able to pass it on.”
10. Harry And Peter Brant Need A Way To Express Themselves
The Nouveaux Riches have often played a part in the development and promotion of fragrances. The image portrayed must be somewhat of a magnet to those who manage the marketing of cosmetics and fragrances. When Canadian-based Make-up Art Cosmetics approached The Brant Brothers — the well-to-do sons of Stephanie Seymour and Peter Brant— they jumped at the opportunity. The pair has now launched a range of unis*x make-up with MAC.
In a promotional video, they are seen applying make-up to each other’s faces and loving the look that comes from their endeavors.
Male cosmetics may not be for everyone but it looks as though it is here to stay. Harry says of the beauty products, which are for both men and women. “It’s like fashion. I use it as a form of self-expression.”
9. Usher Ruled The 2000s
Born in Dallas and raised in Chattanooga, Usher Raymond IV has made his rise to fame look simple. He has sold 23.8 million albums and 38.2 million digital songs in the United States and is named by Billboard as the second most successful artist of the ’00s decade. He began his music career joining an R&B local quintet called the NuBeginnings at the age of just 10.
His own brand fragrance, including Usher for Men and Usher for Women, has sold extremely well thanks in part to his relentless promotion of it at various department stores. It was shortly after release in 2008 one of Macy’s top selling fragrances. But perfumes aren’t the only thing Usher excels at. He apparently has fingers in pies at restaurants too, although his Inman park franchise that spread across Atlanta closed in 2006.
8. Antonio Banderas Goes Back To His Roots
It was only natural that a Spaniard with the style and grace of Antonio Banderas would at some point be more concerned with his appearance than any woman. But first, the celebrated Spanish actor, director, singer, and producer decided to spend his amassed fortune on vineyards in his native Andalucía: a Southern region of Spain famed for its wines and orange juice.
Fragrances were his final destination. A lucrative market, if not highly competitive, but with a name like his, he easily left rivals in his wake. He teamed up with perfumer Puig over ten years ago and their combined efforts have yielded great success. They have released various fragrances including Diavolo and Spirit but the most successful of the releases is Antonio for Men, which came out in 2007. Since then sales have been steady leading to the new Blue Selection.
7. Pharrell Hasn’t Aged In Years
Pharrell’s skin care routine is a thing of awe. In 2013 he admitted to Into the Gloss that he took time to do things properly.
“He follows a strict cleansing routine that involves washing his face regularly with cold water and Glytone Self-Foaming Cleanser, followed by a clearing toner and a moisturizer.”
Whatever he’s doing seems to work, but let’s not forget that the two-time Academy Award nominee has the time to work on himself. It was no surprise that Pharrell revealed a new fragrance in 2013. After all, he had already been heavily into fashion design with his clothing line Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream. He had also been involved in projects and promotions for other items of clothing, and a Louis Vuitton jewelry line. And herein is the benefit of having achieved success: big names want you for their promotion.
6. Ryan Seacrest Trusts His Doc
With such a familiar face, it is little wonder that Ryan Seacrest opted to indulge in skin care. His teaming up with his own dermatologist to sell skincare products for men seems perfectly natural, but we want to know just how much time the pair spent talking about their skin rather than love interests! The range covers all manner of men’s concerns, from how smoothly a razor glides across the skin to how well creases and wrinkles can be filled in.
“I have been a patient of Dr. Lancer’s for more than a decade. His unparalleled understanding of dermatology and compassionate care for his patients is what sets him apart.
5. Justin Bieber Knows What The Ladies Like
This isn’t so much about cosmetics or skin care although it is highly likely that as he creeps up in age the Justin Bieber will resort to whatever substance he can get his hands on. After all, he hasn’t changed in the years since he came to power with the Platinum EP My World in 2009 and he has admitted to paying attention to his skin. For those interested in the artist he posted a skincare routine on Instagram in 2017.
In 2011 he also launched a campaign for his new fragrance, Someday, which arrived with a deep and meaningful video advert. It was, in fact, a tour de force of product placement. Bieber is famously popular with young women and girls and to have his name attached to a fragrance for women meant that sales went through the roof.
4. 50 Cent Is Successful In Everything He Does
50 Cent (a.k.a. Curtis James Jackson III – not as catchy) is renowned for his groundbreaking music and no-holes-barred lyrics. He came from a sorry background to make the big time: he was born in Jamaica and was selling crack cocaine by the age of 12. To have come from that to win Grammy Awards, Billboard Music Awards, World Music Awards, and American Music Awards is worthy of congratulation.
Over the years, he has invested in a huge raft of businesses including music and film production, clothing, alcohol, sports drinks and real estate. You could rightly imagine that he has fingers in just about every pie imaginable. He has lately taken to writing books, including young adult fiction and an autobiography. In 2009, he launched a 50 Cent fragrance called Power. He apparently is able to separate his business ventures from his music (which may just be the secret to his success).
3. Jay-Z Is More Of A Diva Than His Wife
In a similar vein to 50 Cent, Jay-Z hasn’t limited himself to being a brilliant songsmith and performer. In 2015 he managed to acquire Aspiro: a technology company based in Norway, for $56 million. The company specialized in providing a music streaming site to the public but its benefit to the artists was that by it being owned by an artist the revenue would flow directly back rather than being siphoned off to a 3rd party.
In 2008, he released the fragrance 9IX Rocawear with the help of the Elizabeth Arden house of perfume.
Fragrantica describes it as: “its top notes (basically, the smelliest) introduce coriander from Asia, mandarin, melon, the heart includes lavender, geranium and suede, while the base (after it’s been on a long time) encompasses golden amber, musk and timber wood). The fragrance is aimed at younger men, but it has a much wider following, all thanks to Jay-Z.
2. David Beckham Launched A Line Exclusively For Men
And now we come on to the man who was the inspiration for the entire study: David Beckham. This year, Beckham has announced the release of a complete line of grooming materials called House 99. It includes pomade, eye balm, face moisturizer, beard balm, toning lotion and face wash, but there are 13 products in all. On the Harvey Nichols website, Beckham introduces his brand:
“For me, grooming is not only about how you look, but how you feel. It’s about being comfortable, trying new things and shaping your next look. I created House 99 to give people the inspiration as well as the right products to try out something different and feel completely at home doing so.
1. Carlos Santana Always Makes A Statement
Some of you may know the name Carlos Santana. He is the first Mexican-American musician to make a living from mixing Latin American music with contemporary pop and rock. Santana’s popularity continues to this day although his worldwide successes tend to be confined to the 1990s. However, in 2003, Rolling Stone magazine had Santana at, “number 20 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”.
Two years later, off the back of his fame and looking to branch further afield, Santana devised a fragrance called, oddly enough, Carlos Santana. It was a popular scent with notes of “neroli, California pear skin, cassis, coconut water, freesia, Japanese plum, calla lily accord, iris, chocolate, musk, and sandalwood.” He may have fallen from the podium a little over the years but this seems to have done nothing to dull his enthusiasm for epic stage performances.
