15 Fashion Rules The Duggars Follow

The Duggars are a family that you either love, hate, or love to hate. There’s really no in between with them. But for a lot of reality television fans, they are simply fascinated with the way that they operate their family. I mean, it’s safe to say that they are like no other. Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar have built not only a family, but an empire. And they seem to be growing and growing by the minute. There’s just no stopping them.

You’d think that by now the Duggars and their 15 minutes of fame would have ended by now. But they are still here and yes, we are still talking about them. If there’s one thing that a lot of people can’t understand, it’s all of their fashion rules. It’s almost as if the family has their own personal uniform that everyone must wear, day in and day out. And worst of all, there are no exceptions to the rules. The Duggars think that they are the Kings and Queens of modesty, even though they sometimes don’t act like it. With that being said, we have 15 Duggar fashion rules that we simply can’t understand. Check them out below and be thankful that you aren't a Duggar.

15 They Are All About Fundamentalist Fashion

via: instagram.com

When it comes to the Duggar women, it’s safe to say that they like to label their style as “fundamentalist fashion.” It might not be something that you and I are used to, but it’s fashion that is aligned with the family’s spiritual beliefs. And boy do these Duggars have a lot to say, especially when it comes to their religion, right?

Now, we wouldn’t have a problem with the way the Duggars dressed if it weren’t for the fact that Michelle and her daughters love to point their fingers and shame others for their choices. That’s right; the Duggars believe that their word is not only the word of God, but the same word that everyone should follow. Otherwise, you’re not doing it right. At least, according to them.

14 They Have To Be Modest At All Times

via: patheos.com

When it comes to the Duggar family, there are no exceptions to the rules. Their children are expected to abide by all of their rules and regulations at all times. And the same applies to the way they dress as well. According to family matriarch Michelle Duggar, her daughters must dress modestly at all times. She doesn’t care how old they are or what stage they might be in their lives.

They need to have all of their bits and pieces (in other words, their shoulders and knees) covered up, regardless of what the weather may feel like outside. The Duggars aren’t interested in teasing the opposite gender or showing off more skin than they have to. They might not be modest in the way they boast about their perfect lives, but they sure are modest when it comes to their wardrobes.

13 They Always Need To Cover Up

via: thedailymail.co.uk

According to Michelle Duggar, the Duggars need to cover up at all times. A lot of people think that this rule is pretty bizarre and if not a little hypocritical, especially considering the fact that Michelle used to be a cheerleader herself. But that was way before she became a born again Christian. And of course, before she met her knight in shining armor Jim Bob Duggar.

One of the reasons why you never see the Duggar females engaging in any sports or extra curricular activities is because they can’t wear the uniforms. Even something as simple (yet practical) as a basketball uniform would be immodest for the Duggar clan. Their best bet is to keep their knees crossed with their long cardigans and skirts on. Anything else is just plain unacceptable.

12 They Can’t Show Their Knees

via: usweekly.com

If there is one body part that you will never catch a Duggar female showing off in public, it’s her knees! I mean, you just never know what kind of message you might be sending the opposite gender by bending a knee in public, right? That’s why they’ve got their fashion rules on lockdown. And according to Michelle, it’s all because she believes God is their personal stylist. He’s the one helping them pick out what they should and shouldn’t wear whenever they go shopping for new church clothes at their local wholesale department store.

"For us, we felt like we needed to be covered from our neck to below our knees mainly because God talks about the thigh being uncovered, and how that's nakedness and shame," Michelle wrote several years ago.

11 They Can’t Wear Workout Clothes

via: facebook.com

As we’ve mentioned before, the Duggars don’t participate in extra curricular sports. As a matter of fact, they don’t promote exercise or healthy living at all. They are not even allowed to dance, because if they do, it’s like Satan’s moves are taking over their body. Their best bet is to sit with their knees crossed and get hyped on stuff like sugary milkshakes and Krispy Kreme donuts. Their diets are like a heart attack waiting to happen, but we’re not here to talk about that.

With that being said, we’ve never seen a Duggar female in workout clothes. One of the most bizarre photos we’ve ever seen is that of Jessa Duggar lifting weights… with a skirt on. And yes, her husband was standing right next to her.

10 They Can’t Even Wear Swimwear

via: youtube.com

Everyone likes to take a dip in the ocean during a hot summer day, right? Well, as you can imagine, the Duggars are no different. Since they live so close to the beach, you’d think that they would spend the majority of their time having fun in the sand and surf. But that doesn’t seem the case. They’ve only taken one field trip to the beach as a family. And while there, everyone had their clothes on. Although, we did get to see mama Michelle Duggar wear what looks like a button-down shirt and a pair of swim shorts that were below her knees.

She also held an inflatable tube to cover her body, should anyone see something they are not supposed to see. Seriously, these people can’t lighten up at all.

9 The Boys Must Keep Their Eyes Averted From Girls' Clothes

via: youtube.com

Also, a lot of rules just don’t apply to the Duggar daughters, but for the Duggar sons as well. One of the reasons why they don’t allow the girls to wear swimsuits and bikinis is because they don’t want to cause any problems for the boys. Yes, this is the same family that produced that monster called Josh Duggar, but the Duggars aren’t here for your judgment. Nope, not at all. They are only here to give theirs and you are here to listen.

Michelle once wrote, “We typically don't go to the beach in the summertime. And in general we don't do a lot of swimming events where swimming suits are worn because it's just too hard for the guys to try to keep their eyes averted in those situations.”

8 No Peek-A-Boo Shirts

via: gettyimages.com

The biggest offense that any Duggar female can commit is wearing a "peek-a-boo" shirt. In other words, the world is not even allowed to see an exposed chest freckle. For Michelle, if you are showing off just a hint of skin, then you might be stirring up emotions in someone else that they can’t fulfill.

Michelle once put it this way, “By keeping those private areas covered, there's not any 'defrauding' going on. My kids are taught the definition of defrauding as stirring up desires that cannot be righteously fulfilled. We don't believe in defrauding others by the way we dress. And different people may be defrauded by different things. We can't control their thoughts, but we're responsible before God for our part. And so years ago, I just felt between me and my Lord that I really needed to dress modestly.”

7 No "Suggestive" Clothing

via: youtube.com

For the Duggars, you can’t look, you can’t touch, you can’t do anything. It’s no wonder these girls are in such a hurry to get married rather than go to college. Having your first kiss with your new spouse at your wedding and in public has to be awkward as heck, but for the Duggars, it’s just another Sunday. They keep their sensuality tucked in their little pockets until their wedding day.

"It is not your liberty, women, to wear sensual, seductive clothing that is designed to draw the attention of your brothers," Jeremy said during a sermon back in 2016. "But it is your liberty as to whether you dress modestly with a modest pair of pants, or with a skirt, or with a T-shirt, or with a blouse."

6 The Higher The Hair, The Closer To God

via: mommyish.com

We know we are here to talk about the Duggars and their fashion choices, but let’s not forget about Michelle’s hair, too. I mean, the higher the hair, the closer to God, right? You’d think that Michelle would be conscious of all the hair spray she uses, but no. Even though she’s responsible for bringing 19 kids in this world, she applies hair spray like there’s no tomorrow and without much regard to our planet’s ozone layers!

Luckily, it looks like the other Duggar girls don’t use as much hair spray and other hair gels and products as their mother does. In fact, we’ll even go as far as saying that the Duggars have been blessed with great hair. They probably weren’t blessed with common sense and practicality, but there’s no denying they’ve got great locks!

5 They Love Their Long Denim Skirts

via: instagram.com

Take a look at any Duggar family photos from the last several years and you’d think that the year was still 1990. At least, Arkansas during 1990. Because they like to dress like time stood still. The Duggars are obsessed with their long denim skirts and we are convinced that they have a secret warehouse with a life long supply of those damn skirts somewhere hidden in their Duggar mansion. And with so many members in their family, it’s no wonder they are keeping the denim skirt manufacturers in business. It’s their go-to fashion item for every occasion that you could possibly imagine. They wear it to church, to dinner, to weddings, heck, even to your cousin’s backyard BBQ.

A lot of fashionistas will tell you that denim skirts look absolutely repulsive and totally unstylish. But not the Duggars. They just love them.

4 Pants Or Shorts Are Only For The Rebel Duggars

via: instagram.com

Thankfully, it seems like the Duggars girls are saying enough and burning those hideous denim skirts, one by one, all thanks to rebellious sister Jinger Duggar. After she married her husband Jeremy, she started wearing shorts in public and it looks like the other girls are following suit!

We are sure that Mama Michelle must be pipin’ mad. She once said, “When the girls are little, they're jumping and playing and not even thinking about modesty. It's good because that's the way children should be. As a parent I would have to remind them, let's not stand upside down on your head in that chair because you want to practice being ladylike. And they look at me with this puzzled looked like, what does that mean? I'll explain, well, it means that you sit up, put your knees together and pull your skirt down over your knees.”

3 They Even Have a Code Word For Women Who Wear "Risky" Clothes

via: mommyish.com

One of the most annoying things about the Duggars (according to their critics, that is), is that they like to think they are on a higher pedestal compared to everyone else. If you don’t follow their rules and their lifestyle, then you're not worthy of their time and effort. They also like to judge. The Duggars have a special “code word” for women who dress immodestly on the streets.

The Duggars once said in an interview, “That's a signal to the boys, and even to Dad, that they should nonchalantly drop their eyes and look down at their shoes as we walk past her... It's meant to help keep the guys' eyes from seeing things they shouldn't be seeing. By using the single-word signal, the warning can be given quietly and discreetly.”

2 Neckline Rules Are Strict As Can Be

via: instagram.com

If there’s one thing that you’ll never see a Duggar female do in public, it’s bending over. If you happened to drop your phone, it stays there. Sorry. Bending over can cause a nearby man to have feelings that might cause someone to explode.

The Duggar girls once said, “We do not dress modestly because we are ashamed of the body God has given us; quite the contrary. We realize that our body is a special gift from God and that He intends for it to be shared only with our future husband. We avoid low-cut, cleavage-showing, gaping, or bare-shouldered tops; and when needed, we wear an undershirt. We try to make it a habit to always cover the top of our shirt with our hand when we bend over. We don't want to play the peekaboo game with our neckline.”

1 Let’s Not Forget The Guys

via: people.com

Also, let’s not forget about the Duggar men and their strict dress code either. The rules just don’t apply to the girls here. If you haven’t already noticed, the Duggar men are not allowed to wear shorts. Even they are not allowed to expose their knees for fear that they might cause unwanted feelings in another woman. Yes, everyone wears pants. We’re surprised that they aren’t being told to wear their pants while taking a shower, too.

With that being said, we’re surprised that the Duggars haven’t come up with their own personal fashion line yet. Actually, scratch that. We don’t want to give anyone any ideas. The last thing we need is for their denim skirts to take over our world, one Duggar fanatic at a time. We’ve already got enough problems as it is!
