Friends is one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. Though a new episode hasn’t aired in years, there are still daily reruns on various channels of this popular sitcom. Audiences love watching these friends go on with their days in New York, navigating their work and love lives through hilarious scenes and heart-warming exchanges. One of the favorite parts of the show for many viewers is the iconic looks of the cast. With three boys and three girls that all have very different styles, there are hundreds of looks we’ve seen during the years the show aired. With so many various style changes, there’s no denying that not every single one of them was great.
Some trends can be blamed on what was popular at the time and others are experiments that just didn’t land in the fashion world. Of all the "friends," Rachel was one that had the most unique and defined style, necessary for her character as she worked in the fashion industry. She has fans still contacting the fashion department from the show just to get some juicy details about where Jennifer Aniston got some of her iconic looks. Though she inspired many with her outfit choices, not everything she slipped into before hopping in front of cameras was a good choice. Rachel Green could look good in anything, but we know Jennifer Aniston wouldn’t repeat a few of the outfits she wore while working on Friends.
20 At Least She Looked Festive
Rachel looks pretty festive in this outfit, clearly dressed up for a vacation. The shirt screams “dad in Disney” aside from the peek of her flat stomach, of course. We love a good green pant, but this one just isn’t the perfect fit for Rachel, though that shade of blue does look great on her.
It was from the episode in which she dated Bruce Willis, an older man who also happened to be the father of a young student Ross was dating. They snuck away from a little couple’s retreat, only for things to get a little tricky in the house. Her long hair was a short-lived look, but that’s definitely one of the best parts of this era of Rachel.
She says her hair stylist “just wants to just cut it all off, kind of like a pixie, which [she] will never do. And he always likes to give it a good two inches every year, just a healthy cut. He’s also suggested going back to dark brown.”
Of course, she looks good no matter what she’s wearing, but we certainly wouldn’t pick this as one of the looks she should go for again.
19 Rachel Looks Good As A '90s Angsty Teen
Her choker and skirt make her look like an angsty teen you’d see on any '90s sitcom. This was a popular look decades ago, and though necklaces seemed to get longer, they’re back to choker length for people who follow trends all over.
The simple bobby pin in her hair is a small detail, but it still adds to the overall nostalgia of this look. Her hair wasn’t long and didn’t hold much back, but with the way her locks normally flew around, it seems like this style might have been more functional than fashionable. Rachel didn’t always have cute hair, stating,
“I always have such a chuckle when I hear people saying I have great hair because as a kid it was always a challenge. I’d only had mullets or those haircuts when you were a kid and you’d get those crazy, like, long at the front and shaved at the back. Oh, I just learned so many lessons from my youth of what not to do.”
We love any look when Rachel decides to go for a simple black skirt with simple black tights. It’s definitely not the last time we’d see this iconic look from Rachel.
18 What's Going On With Those Cuffs Rachel?
In the later seasons, Rachel kept a more updated version of her hair with this simple style. Her hair transformed just as much as other styles throughout the long run of the show, but she never did anything too wild or crazy, such as going platinum blonde or completely dark. Though the highlights can’t be that natural, it’s still a notable look that fans loved watching evolve throughout the entirety of the series. Though her hair looks great, this is still an outfit we have to pass on.
The sleeves on that shirt aren’t great. It’s an overall simple look, and a sweater/collared shirt combo is a timeless pairing, but the way her sleeves look in this throw us off. Why are they so short and why are they folded up like that? It seems like a silly part that’s more trend rather than function.
We don’t mean to be too nit-picky here, but her fingers look a little strange too as if they’re bruised. She has had different acting roles, but all this together just looks a bit strange.
Even though she’s sitting down, we can tell that she’s wearing flare-legged jeans. If she would have had long sleeves and some different pants, this would have certainly been a better outfit we’d want to see Jennifer Aniston in again.
17 Rachel Coming Through With The Gold Choker
We don’t get to see the cast of friends get all formal too often, but when they do, Rachel always does it best. She kept it simple in this red dress, with two small straps over her dewy shoulders. It seems like Rachel always looks flawless, so it has some of us wondering if she ever struggles with her appearance or confidence. She’s human too, and has said herself, "There are not enough fingers and toes in this entire room to count how many times that moment has happened to me.
We're all human beings at the end of the day, whether we're a waitress or a baker or a student or whatever we are, at the end of the day you kind of can hit walls and think I can't go any farther. Or this is too much. My heart can't take it or the pain is too great, or am I good enough? Will I survive?"
Though she was single at this time, Rachel was never single for very long.
16 Not something worth repeating
In the later seasons, it seems that their looks are more dated than the original episodes that were seemingly decades ago. Some outfits went out of style and came back in while others we hope no one ever wears again. It’s not like everything that she wore on the show was thrown away, so we’re still left wondering if pieces like this crazy patterned dress is sitting on a thrift store rack or if someone is still on the hunt to buy an outfit like this.
If the dress were simple, we might go for it, but this pattern is just a little dated. The low neckline, color, and rope-like belt is just a mess that doesn’t fit well together. The sleeves are also a strange length and the lack of accessories makes this feel a bit boring even though it doesn’t completely make sense.
The hair trend of flipping ends out has thankfully died, but it will forever live on in the hairstyle Rachel was caught with here. Rachel looks good no matter what, but we wouldn’t be surprised to find out she threw this outfit out when the show ended.
15 Rachel Looks Best Dressed Down
Some of the best episodes of Friends was when everyone was just dressed down and hanging out in their pyjamas. Even these outfits are chosen meticulously, but they’re still important looks nonetheless. Though she might have stolen a boy’s look for this outfit, she has stated a few times the importance of not actually needing a man for her happiness.
“This whole 'poor lonely Jen' thing, this idea that I'm so unlucky in love? I actually feel I've been unbelievably lucky in love. Just because at this stage my life doesn't have the traditional framework to it — the husband and the two kids and the house in Connecticut— it's mine.
It's my experience. And if you don't like the way it looks, then stop looking at it! Because I feel good. I don't feel like I'm supposed to be any further along or somewhere that I'm not. I'm right where I'm supposed to be."
She looks cute wearing an oversized sweatshirt and potentially Ross’s boxers. We doubt she actually sleeps with her hair up like that, but it’s still a look that we would catch her in again. Not many people would boldly walk around their apartment hallways in their pyjamas, but if we looked like Rache, we probably would.
14 What's The Idea Behind This Sweater?
Rachel looks great in sweaters, but this one is a little bit confusing. It almost looks as if her purse is hanging around her neck, but it doesn’t make any sense that it would come out the middle. What is even the point of showing off that bit of chest? It seems like a counterproductive outfit. Rachel was known for showing off the fact that she wasn’t wearing a bra sometimes, many people criticizing her for being inappropriate. On the subject, she’s shown she doesn’t care much, stating, “Yeah, I don’t know what to say about that! It’s just one of those things, I guess. I wear a bra, I don’t know what to tell you! And I don’t know why we’re supposed to be ashamed of them — it’s just the way my breasts are! But hey, I’m not going to complain! In my own brain, I’ve shifted my perspective, so who gives a shit! If you’re going to walk out and have your nipples showing, or your belly is a little bloated, or you’re not at the weight you want to be — you are perfect no matter what you are and no matter where you are and who cares!”
13 We'll Be Patriotic For Rachel In This Killer Outfit
Rachel has legs for days, but she still loved to rock black tights paired with black skirts and shorts in the early days of Friends. We also love this simple USA sweater, definitely something you’d likely see on the racks at a young adult clothing store now. Her hair is a bit dated, but with such an iconic look, we can’t help but support the famous hairstyle. She was well-known for her role in the show and the look that carried her through. She has discussed how it was a bit hard for her to find some work after the show ended, stating,
“It’s a blessing and a curse. It gave us everything but also gives you more of a challenge, to shape people’s perceptions of you. It’s “Matthew is Chandler Bing and Jennifer is Rachel Green,” so it’s hard for people to even believe that we’re playing other people. It’s just taking gentle baby steps and allowing your fans to grow with you.”
Shots from the show like these are also great because we get a longer look at the setting around our favorite cast.
12 Not All Skirts Look Good On Rachel
Rachel’s hair looks great in this. The color is a look that some are still asking their hairstylist for and the cut seems so natural we’re surprised that she wasn’t born looking this way. We also love how she always wears neutral-tone nail polish. She usually has nicely done nails and makeup. Even though everything else is great, we still don’t fully support this outfit she was seen wearing in one of the later episodes.
This combo is just very early 2000s for us, so we’re going to have to put this on the list of things she should probably not wear again. Although it’s form-fitting, it doesn’t do too much for her great figure.
We already discussed how we don’t support non-functional sweaters, and this is one of them. What’s the point of a turtleneck on a sweater that doesn’t have any sleeves? Rachel looks better in her worst outfit than most of us do in our best, so we don’t want it to seem like we’re hating too hard here.
11 This Has To Be One Of Her Most Iconic Looks
Overalls, blazer, white sneakers? Everything here is such a look that we would love to see Jennifer Aniston recreate. Even though there’s nothing too crazy here, especially compared to some of the wild designs Phoebe wore, it’s still bold looks like this from Rachel that keep us watching repeats at night over and over again.
It might be a bit dated, but it seems long enough ago that it’s trendy again, like many other styles that pop in and out of fashion. Overalls were one of the many trends that slipped in and out of style, and they seem to be making a big comeback.
Even the watch on her wrist pulls the outfit together. Rachel always has so many small details that we love picking up on in every episode. Even when things don't make it on our "favorite" list, we still appreciate all the accessories that help complete her look.
Again, we see her natural-looking manicure, a reminder that Rachel really takes care of herself. There are jokes about her messiness on the show, but from the way she always seems put-together, we have a hard time believing that running joke.
10 Lose The Belt Rachel
The only thing about this look we don’t like is the skirt. The chunky pleats and even chunkier belt is a little too much for Rachel. It’s not like she looks completely terrible, but we know that Rachel Green could do a little better than this skirt.
Had she worn it with a plain black skirt, we would have certainly loved it. She went with something a little more extra for this outfit and it didn’t completely land. It’s like cheerleader-meets-business and we’re not a fan.
Jennifer Aniston has to know that not every look she had on Friends became a fan-favorite. The boots are killer and seem like the ones from the iconic episode in which Monica spends too much money on a pair of boots that actually end up causing her a ton of pain!
The set is very detailed and probably changed the least out of all of them. Though this is a later episode, it’s clear to see that there’s a lot in the kitchen that has remained the same from the very first episodes. You can see the evolution from Rachel’s wardrobe in the pictures but not as much in the set.
9 Rachel Looks Good No Matter How Casual She Is
Seeing Rachel’s hair curly was a rare occasion. Perhaps curling it was too hard, or maybe the curls are natural and she just prefers to always keep it straight. Either way, we would have loved to see her wavy hair more often.
It seemed like her hair changed a lot, but this casual look was still one we loved the most. She always looks great in plain unbuttoned shirts and jeans. It was a look other cast members wore, but when Rachel put it on, we loved it most.
Pairing an oversized shirt with high-waisted mom jeans is back in style, so Aniston should definitely consider repeating this look. She certainly got more professional looking in the later episodes and dressed like this less frequently as her character matured.
This wasn’t a look we saw as often on Rachel in the later seasons, but Jennifer Aniston couldn’t go wrong repeating it now. We wonder how many of Rachel’s old pieces she might still have hidden away in her closet.
8 We Just Can't Support A Sleeveless Turtleneck
Rachel looks great with highlighted wavy hair. She wore her hair down more often than not, but for a good reason as well. Jennifer Aniston has stated that she kept up with her hair very often, even keeping a pair of scissors in her car so she could trim her split ends often.
Her tan is on point. Whenever Rachel shows some skin, it’s always very well moisturized and smooth-looking, another key factor in Rachel’s iconic look. Though a lot of what she has going on is great, we still have to put this on the list of outfits she shouldn’t exactly repeat.
We still just don’t support a sleeveless sweater. Her manicure is perfect, and her makeup is on point once again. This sweater certainly dates her, so we don’t fully back this fashion decision.
The color brings out her eyes, something that’s harder to notice on a sitcom where there aren’t many close-ups. We still can’t help but wonder what the point of a turtleneck is if the sweater isn’t keeping your arms warm.
7 She Knows How To Dress Most Of The Time
The look of the dress over a long-sleeved shirt is one that slipped in and out of fashion. It’s a great pairing for Rachel, and the cut of the dress and the shirt really suit her body. Her simple jewelry dates her bit is still a look that’s on point. This doesn’t exactly look like something we’d see Jennifer Aniston in again, but that doesn’t mean we don’t still think she’d look great. If her personal style has strayed from this, we can still use it for fashion inspiration at least. This seemed like it was in prime “Rachel” time when it came to her iconic hairstyle.
“Let’s say there have been moments I’d rather not relive, like that whole Rachel thing. How do I say this? I think it was the ugliest haircut I’ve ever seen. What I really want to know is, how did that thing have legs?”
Courtney Cox was actually a little hurt that she never got the chance to have such an iconic look like Rachel. She has her fair share of iconic looks as well, but nothing that made as much of an influence on pop culture as Rachel’s fringe.
6 Her Final Look Is A Pass For Us
Rachel has a lot going on here and not many things that we would likely see her in again. That cut of jeans has slipped in and out of style, even though it seems to be all you can find in stores sometimes. The dotted pattern is another one we’ve seen go just a bit, but she always looks great in a sleeveless top. It’s most disappointing that this was one of her final looks. With such a style icon on TV, it’s hard to see a look that isn’t all that memorable in her final moments. Perhaps it’s not the final Rachel look, as she’s discussed the possibility of a reunion.
"Friends is in your living room; Friends is not in a movie theater. It doesn't make sense to me. I think it would be going against its authentic self. It would probably take those five actors and be somewhere where we left off. I loved what I did for 10 years; it was pure joy and nothing but fun, and it’d be hard to top it.
The way we sort of felt the excitement of what Friends was when it started, it would have to be something where you felt a similar charge. But I’ll never ever say never.” When asked if Ross and Rachel would be together, Jennifer followed up by stating, "They're absolutely, 100 percent together. They have more kids!"
5 The Yellow Dress Is A Fan Favorite
Jennifer Aniston stated that she actually helped supply the yellow dress that had fans going crazy when the episode first aired. She stated she would often shop in smaller stores throughout New York and even in different fashion markets. This was a little piece she picked up herself. Fans always loved to see Rachel show off her tanned and toned arms in sleeveless tops. Many fans still contact the show in an attempt to get a hold of whoever designed the dress Rachel is seen in here.
Her hair is simple and pulled back — another look that fans love but didn't see very often. She usually wears her hear down, but when it’s pulled back, you can really see Jennifer Aniston’s toned body. The color is something we don’t see very often either. She’s known for wearing a lot of dark colors, but this pop of yellow certainly stands out.
4 Are Those Purple Patches On Her Capris?
Rachel is spotted here again in yellow, but this time, it’s not quite as good. The color is simple and muted, like many pieces that Rachel wears. Not all of us look our best every day, so it’s nice that some of the characters in Friends have their moments, too.
The top itself looks great, but it’s her pants we’re a little more hung up on. We wonder if Jennifer Aniston still watches her sitcom from time to time to see what she was wearing. Is she ever embarrassed or does she always stand by her decisions?
Are those purple hearts on her pants? She worked in the fashion industry on the show, so it was important for her to be a trendsetter. These strange patches don’t seem like a trend that ever fully caught on, however.
She doesn’t look bad. As we’ve already reiterated, Rachel almost always looked great. This just isn’t one of the outfits we’d likely see her wearing again, as Rachel or as Jennifer Aniston.
3 Black Is Best For Rachel
Rachel does it again in all back. This is certainly a look many fans would repeat to this very day. The black dress is a timeless look and we love clothes that are a bit see-through. We love the sheer on her dress and the black tights she paired. Rachel, and Jennifer Aniston, prove that you don’t have to show off a lot of skin to really be foxy. Her hair's pinned back again, this time with a black pin to match the rest of her ensemble. It was upsetting to see her failed attempts at winning over Joshua, leaving us questioning what it was that kept him from dating her. Jennifer Aniston has made it clear that in her real life, she has no desire to chase men. She stated,
"I don’t like girls whining and complaining about wanting a man! I never liked Sex and the City, the kind of thing where women only feel empowered once they find 'the man.'
It is just not up my alley. I don't believe in it. There is nothing you can control about love."
2 Rachel didn't have the best Leather Jackets
Rachel has made some questionable choices during her run on Friends when it came to leather jackets. She has several different episodes in which she can be seen wearing a strange-colored jacket. Leather jackets aren’t the worst, but she always has some interesting color choices. This leather jacket with this red-colored shirt is not the best look. In fact, it looks downright strange. Her hair is a bit confusing here, too. Rachel didn’t always look her best, and hopefully, she’s learned from her leather jacket mistakes. She tries to drown out the negative criticism too, stating,
"[Beauty is] inner confidence. Peace. Kindness. Honesty. A life well-lived. Taking on challenges and not feeling shame for things that haven't gone the way you felt they should have.
And not feeling like a failure or allowing people to critique your life and make you feel like you've failed at something. That's just toxic noise."
1 Her Simple Style Is Always Best
Rachel did simple best. Rachel worked in fashion and the way her character dresses helps make that more realistic. She references drinking diet coke or going for runs, and it’s clear that Jennifer Aniston takes care of her health as well. Even since retiring her Rachel role, Jennifer Aniston has discussed the importance of staying fit and active. When it comes to how hard it is to stay in shape, she’s stated,
“You know what, there are days I go 'I can’t' and 'I don’t want to,' and I think you just have to listen to your body.
So sometimes, you just don’t work out. And then there are times when you go, 'Really? Do you really not want to?' And then if you just say, 'Okay, I’m going to get on some machine for 10 minutes,' you just start to get the endorphins going. Then you feel great, and you just keep going. So sometimes you can actually override the 'I don’t want to work out.'"
